Vericor Power Systems Overview

Vericor Power Systems LLC. All Rights Reserved 2003

AEE Atlanta Chapter, January Meeting

What is CHP?
Generation of electric (or shaft) and thermal energy
from a single source
Use of both electric (or shaft) and thermal energy
from a single source at one location
Examples

Gas Turbine with Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG)

Gas Turbine with Direct Fired Absorption Refrigeration
Gas Turbine with HRSG and Steam Absorption Refrigeration
Gas Turbine with Hot Oil Heaters/Vaporizers
Or combination of above

AEE Atlanta Chapter, January Meeting

Is it a Technical Fit?
Available space to install CHP package
Base load application (8760 operating schedule)
Single electric point of service
Electric point of service large enough to use full generator output

Adequate fuel available in volume and pressure

Year round thermal need
Thermal and electric matched profiles
Sink for all available thermal energy
We have thermal energy with waste electricity.

Economics

Spark Spread Difference between electric and fuel price on an equivalent Btu
basis

Age and efficiency of existing thermal equipment

Higher the better

2 to 1 is minimum
3 to 1 and higher is preferred
Project paybacks of 3.0 or less require 4 to 1 ratios
Inefficient equipment translates to higher thermal savings
Exhaust heat recovery is typically 95 to 98 percent efficient
Auxiliary firing is 100% efficient higher thermal load to offset, better economics

Operations and Maintenance

Overhauls and specialty maintenance required at regular intervals

Manufactures typically offer long-term maintenance services agreements
Exhaust clean-up equipment requires annual services and catalyst replacements every
3 to 5 years
Auxiliary equipment can reduce net output by 1 to 6 percent of nameplate rating
Stand-by power (how much and determination method)

Vericor Power Systems LLC. All Rights Reserved 2003

AEE Atlanta Chapter, January Meeting

Items to Watch

Emissions
Non-attainment (usually 10 ppmvd or less on NOx)
NOx abatement/exhaust clean-up required

Water Injection
Steam Injection
DLE (catalytic combustion)
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

Permitting standards

State of the Art (SOTA)

Maximum Available Control Technology (MACT)
Best Available Control Technology (BACT)
Lowest Achievable Emissions Rate (LAER)

Vericor Power Systems LLC. All Rights Reserved 2003

AEE Atlanta Chapter, January Meeting

Items to Watch

Electric Interconnection
Utility Side of the Meter

Utility interconnection can be costly and lengthy to complete

Utility interconnection standards, procedures, and fees vary
IEE is developing a technical standard for interconnection
FERC has an ANOPR in review for standard procedures and fees
Does the state have a net metering protocol or regulation

Customer Side of the Meter (insdie the fence, parallel operation)

Utility typically requires reverse current protection

Power quality standards are required for parallel operation
Stand-by power is usually required
Does the state have net metering protocol or regulation
Loss of utility power can require generator protection or customer load
shedding

Vericor Power Systems LLC. All Rights Reserved 2003

AEE Atlanta Chapter, January Meeting

Items to Watch

Fuel Supply
Liquid Fuels
Viscosity and heating value
Sulfur and other contaminants
Supply volumes and on-site storage

Gaseous Fuels
Supply pressure GT typically require 200 to 250 psig
Low pressure gas requires a compressor increases capital expense
and annual operating costs
Adequate volume and delivery system available from LDC
Gas quality and heating value should be evaluated
Gas temperature available
Interruptible gas supply dual fuel unit may be required

Vericor Power Systems LLC. All Rights Reserved 2003

AEE Atlanta Chapter, January Meeting

Items to Watch

System Integration/Design of CHP System

Electric System

Swings in electric load

Largest single electric load
Unbalanced circuits
Power quality required

Thermal System
Sudden changes in steam or thermal fluid flows
Required steam pressures GT systems are easier to integrate with
high pressure steam systems and high temperature thermal fluids
Back-up of thermal systems during GT preventative maintenance
