Data Basics

What Is Data?

Unites of Measurement

Data is digital information that is

transmitted from one point to another
point. In the wireless world, it is digital
information that is transmitted or
accessed on a wireless device. This
includes:

In the wireless world everything is calculated in Kilobytes. The chart below

identifies the units of measurement that are used globally to measure data.

Internet browsing
Sending / receiving e-mails/IM
Downloading content
Tethering
Using mobile applications

1 bit = 1 character
1 byte = 8 bits
1 kilobyte (KB) = 1024 bytes
1 megabyte (MB) = 1024 kilobytes
1 gigabyte (GB) = 1024 megabytes

How is Data Calculated?

Why Sell Data?

By offering and selling the appropriate
data option to your customer, you:
 Minimize the possibility of product
returns or calls to our support
center for unexpected data charges
 Allow customers to take advantage
of using their wireless device to its
full capability
 Allows customers to take advantage
of smartphone device subsidy if
they purchase a data plan at sale
vs. post sale
Because customers are looking to do
much more than just talk on their
Mobile devices, helping them pick the
right data plan or Add-On based on
their device type and usage needs is
critical to the customer experience.

Lets compare Data to Airtime

Data is billed according to the
volume of data transferred, not for
the amount of time a customer is
connected. Activities such as
browsing are calculated for each KB
of data that is downloaded.

Airtime is calculated based on the

duration of the call and is
calculated as follows: the time spent
between the second a customer
presses the Call/Answer key and
the second the connection is
terminated.
