Who are Phil’s Phriends?
For the last 8 years Phil’s Phriends has participated
in the Pan Mass Bike Challenge to raise money for
the Jimmy Fund and the fight against cancer. We
have a team of dedicated riders who have come
together for a common purpose.
Each member of our team has their own reasons why they’ve gotten
involved in such a worthwhile cause. Each one of us will also tell you
that every year we participate we are amazed at the number of
individuals that cancer has affected. In addition, we are moved by
the support and effort of everyone who continues the fight to make a
difference against this all too common disease.
We came together to show support for Phil & Mary Morin in their
time of need. The stories we see and hear each year have kept us
together and motivate us to do more. We will continue to grow and
make a difference in people’s lives. We ask that you help us along
the way by continuing to show your financial and moral support that
you have so generously done through the years. We promise we’ll
make your participation in our mission an enjoyable and rewarding
journey.

Just another day…
June 1, 2002 was just like any other day in the Morin household. I
was at the kitchen sink when Brian (5), Kelsey (3) and I heard the
garage door go up. It was only 5:00 PM so we were very excited
that Daddy was home early. Phil came walking up the cellar stairs
and said just 6 words, ”I went to the doctor’s today.”
Our lives were like a whirlwind after that. Five days later we were
told he had a mass in his colon. A few days later he was being
operated on to remove the tumor. We thought it was only stage 2 or
3 colon cancer. We told ourselves that our lives would be
interrupted for a year or two but then things would be normal again.
Phil would fight the cancer, he’d beat the cancer and we’d realize
how lucky we were and once again be a happy, healthy family.
The day of the operation I was sitting with Phil’s Mom and Dad in the
lobby of Milford Whitonsville Hospital. Phil’s operation was
scheduled to start at 10:00 AM. I was reading the Boston Globe,
Mrs. Morin was doing her check book and Mr. Morin was watching
the TV. All of a sudden I looked down at the floor and saw a pair of
black shoes. I looked up and saw Phil’s surgeon. It was 10:20 AM.
Many, many thoughts passed through my mind in the 5 seconds
before he spoke. I was thinking of every reason he would be done
with the surgery in 20 minutes. Every reason except the one that I
knew was true. It was only 5 words this time and I immediately
couldn’t breathe. Those 5 words, “There’s nothing we can do.”
We had 11 months after that day. There were some really good
days when Phil felt great. And then there were some really bad days
and nights that will live forever in my heart. We got to do “one more”
of almost everything. One more birthday for each of us, one more
Thanksgiving and one more Christmas.

supper together or reading bedtime stories were what we loved the
most.

Phil’s Phriends team shirts
When Phil’s Phriends ride in the PanMass Challenge and other
events, we wear team shirts designed by Scott Young. Here is the
story behind the shirts as told by Scott:
I approached Mary with the thought that I would like to design shirts
that were personal to Phil. Basically a story of his life and what was
important captured on an area no bigger than 22” inches on both the
front and back. At the time Phil was very sick and very weak. I
wanted a list of important memories, moments and people in his life.
I wanted these shirts to make sense. Something that Mary and Phil
could look at and understand what it all meant. Phil had a lot of items
listed out and I knew I couldn’t fit everything. I chose the ones that
felt made sense and I could work into some kind of design. I
14
narrowed down the list and showed it to Mary. I explained why I had
chosen those specific items out of the list and why I thought it might
work. She went to Phil and told her what the thoughts were. They
both agreed that everything made sense. The colors were chosen to
stand out from everything else, because quite honestly at the time I
thought the Morin Family stood out for what they were going through
and who they were..
Family: Christmas with his family Mary, Bryan and Kelsey was
something he cherished and was hoping he would get one more
chance at one. Their names are on the sleeves
Friends: Phil had a very fond memory of being with his friends in
Montreal and taking a river rafting ride. So inside his family he also
cherished his friends
The Parrot and Eagle: Phil Loved Jimmy Buffet I guess. On the
parrot is a BC Eagles shirt from his college alma mater which was so
important to him. The 83 signifies the year he graduated.
The Words: The words are Mary’s. As she went through this ordeal
with Phil she would get some news that she might try to pin some
hope on, only to have it take another turn for the worse. She
basically said the only advise she can give to anyone going through
this ordeal is simply: “Be Realistic and Plan for a Miracle”
There were a lot of other items that were left off the shirt, but all in
all, I think they came out ok.
