Media can be a positive influence for teenagers. For example, teenagers who are exposed to and
take an interest in the news are more likely to be interested in major social and political issues.
This can help educate them and encourage them to become more involved as citizens in their
communities. Teenagers can also pick up important health promotion messages from the media
for example, messages aimed at preventing youth depression and suicide, and encouraging
healthy eating and lifestyle habits.

Television does, in fact, have a positive influence on children, because it is quite educational.
There's no denying that television has a potentially damaging influence on children in teenage
and college years, if it leads to sedentary lifestyles. But, in early years, it can really help.
Educational programming, like Sesame Street and related shows, can help teach kids letters,
numbers and important concepts that will help them thrive and take care of themselves later in
life. Also, much of children's programming can help stimulate and develop their imaginations,
leading them to lives of creativity.

If one can assume, as research now suggests, that the theater and TV screen are to some extent
teachers of values and social behavior in our society, it might be important to assess what kinds
of values and behavior are being taught or modeled by the media. It is entirely possible that the
fantasy creations of todays movie theater may, as a self-fulfilling prophecy, become tomorrows
social norms. The motion picture theater may, in fact, be a more powerful and persuasive
teacher of values and ethics on Saturday night than the Sunday School classroom is on Sunday
morning.

Television can give us a broader window on the world. For example, seeing movies can expose us
to people of different races and cultures. We can then overcome some prejudices more easily.

handicapped people in films, and this also helps reduce prejudice. The best influence on our
behavior is that movies and television reduce stress. Watching films, we can escape our own
problems for a little while. Also, sometime movies show positive ways to resolve problems we all
face. While TV and movies shouldn't be a way to hide from life, sometimes they can help us
cope.

Moreover, its clear that these stories really can change our views. As the psychologist Raymond
Mar writes, Researchers have repeatedly found that reader attitudes shift to become more
congruent with the ideas expressed in a [fictional] narrative. For example, studies reliably show
that when we watch a TV show that treats gay families nonjudgmentally (say, Modern Family),
our own views on homosexuality are likely to move in the same nonjudgmental direction. History,
too, reveals fictions ability to change our values at the societal level, for better and worse. For
example, Harriet Beecher Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin helped bring about the Civil War by
convincing huge numbers of Americans that blacks are people, and that enslaving them is a
mortal sin. On the other hand, the 1915 film The Birth of a Nation inflamed racist sentiments
and helped resurrect an all but defunct KKK.

Media influence on children has steadily increased as new and more sophisticated types of media
have been developed and made available to the American public. Availability, as well as greater
affordability for American families, has provided easier access to media for children. Beneficial
effects include early readiness for learning, educational enrichment, opportunities to view or
participate in discussions of social issues, exposure to the arts through music and performance,
and entertainment.

Tellingly, we now move onto a film memorable largely because of a deer hunter, with the cute
fawn Bambi having to suffer through the murder of his mother by way of a hunters bullet. The
Reality: Though the movie endured a mixed critical response upon release, it still resonated with
audiences in much the same way that Disney always has it is a moving classic of their canon,
to the point where it apparently caused many hunters to no longer desire snagging the pelt of a
Bambi lookalike. According to online reports, the number of deer hunted in the US decreased by
roughly half in the years following Bambis release for a time, and the anthropomorphism that we
associate with cute animals in general (such as dolphins) has since been dubbed the Bambi
effect.

Some movies portray historical events. These movies are like history lessons to the audience
since they show something we were not able to witness or take part in. Consider war movies
such as The Tuskegee Airmen and Memphis Belle. Though not one hundred percent accurate,
both depict actual events of historical wars. They are examples of how movies can teach the
newer generations about what their distant relatives did for their country. Another type of
informative movies describes the cultures and societies around the world. City of God is a prime
example. These movies show the hardships that people in other countries face in their day-today lives.
