SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF CEMENT

Procedure:
Weigh a clean and dry Le Chaelier Flask. Add kerosene to the flask and note the initial
reading. Then add cement ( 64 grams ) into the flask. The flask is stirred and mixed
thoroughly. The final reading of the kerosene is then noted and the difference will give the
change in volume.

Calculations :
Weight of cement = 64 g
Initial reading = 0.4 ml
Final reading = 21.4 ml
Difference = 21.4 0.4 = 21ml
Specific Gravity of cement = 64 /21 = 3.05

SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF COARS AND FINE AGGREGATE

Procedure
(I) Take the sample and place it to fill a third of the pycnometer.
(II) Pour distilled water into it until it is full.
(III) Eliminate the entrapped air by rotating the pycnometer on its side ,the hole in the apex
of the cone being covered with a finger.
(IV) Wipe out the outer surface of pycnometer and weigh it (W)
(V) Transfer the contents of the pycnometer into a tray , care being taken to ensure that all
the aggregate is transferred .
(VI) Refill the pycnometer with distilled water to the same level .
(VII) Find out the weight (W1)
(VIII) Drink water from the sample through a filter paper .
(IX) Weigh it (W2)

According to IS 383, it is of Zone I

TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

fm = fck +1.65 s
fm = Target characteristics compressive strength at 28 days
fck = characteristics compressive strength at 28 days
s = standard deviation
From Table 1 of IS 10262 -2009 , s = 5 N/mm2
Therefore , fm = 40 +1.65 x 5 = 48.25 N/mm2

SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO

From Table 5 of IS 456, maximum water cement ratio is =0.45

We adopt water cement ratio as 0.38

`
SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT

From table 2, maximum water content for 20 mm aggregate = 186 lire (for 25 to 50
mm slump range )

CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Water cement ratio = 0.38

Cement material content =186 / 0.38 =489.47 kg/m3

PROPORTIONING OF VOLUME COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE:

From table 3 of IS 10262-2009, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20

mm size and fine aggregate (ZONE 1) for cement ratio of 0.50 = 0.60
In the present case, the water cement ratio = 0.38.
Therefore volume of coarse aggregates = 0.60 + 0.024=0.624
Volume of fine aggregate = 1 0.624 = 0.376
