1.0 Introduction
1.1 Statement of Purpose
With safety being a primary concern for citizens after dark, the need for sidewalk lighting
has been essential along frequently traveled paths. The problem is that the lights are on all night
which presents a very serious power conservation concern. Our product aims to solve the
power conservation problem by collecting data pertaining to human motion through a walkway
and using that information to control lighting.
1.2 Objectives
1.2.1 Goals and Benefits
Limits power use for outdoor lighting
Increases pedestrian safety through tracking
Data collection of human movement patterns
1.2.2 Functions and Features
Sense environmental conditions.
Track human motion and speed
Pressure sensors detect human presence and infrared sensors detect speed through the
walkway.
Enable and disable security cameras as people move through the walkway
Change lighting color and power based on environmental conditions

2.2 Block Descriptions

2.2.1 Microcontroller
Collects data from the various sensors and uses it to control the LED lighting next to the
walkway.
2.2.2 Power Source
The power source will provide power to all necessary components.
2.2.3 LED Lighting
The LED lighting that is attached to the walkway.
2.2.4 Cameras
Cameras used to record human motion. When a presence is detected the camera turns
on to record and turns off when people leave the area.
2.2.5 Infrared Sensor
Sensor used to track human motions. Attached to the light fixtures that are set apart by a
fixed distance. Calculates the speed by measuring time it takes for a person to successfully
cross sequential sensors.
2.2.6 Ambient Light Sensor
Sensor to detect the ambient lighting so that we know when it is dark enough outside to
turn the system on.
2.2.7 Pressure/Switch Sensor
Uses a pressure sensor to detect when someone is standing on the walkway. Used for
when someone is standing on the walkway but they are not moving.
2.2.8 Relays
The relays function to control the flow of power from the power source to the lights and
the camera. Receives a signal from the microcontroller for when it should turn on/off.
3.0 Requirements and Verification
Requirement

Verification

1. Ambient Light Sensor

- Able to determine night conditions

Simulate outdoor lighting conditions within an

indoor lightning source. Measure the
luminosity at dusk and replicate inside the lab

2. Microcontroller
- Accurate speed calculation within +/5%

Infrared sensors tell the microcontroller when

motion has been detected. The
microcontroller calculates the speed based on
the time to trip successive sensors

3. Infrared Sensor
- Detects motion within +/- 100cm

Detect how far from the infrared beam it is

able to detect motion

4. Pressure Sensor
- Produce at least a 1V signal when
triggered

Test sensor with various weight sizes

5. Relays
- Able to turn/on deliver power within
100 ms of power being requested

Take signal from the microcontroller and

measure the time it takes for the lighting to
turn and off.
