ACCREDITATION OF THE
BTICINO TEST ROOM
Laboratories play a fundamental role
in obtaining Company Quality, both
in testing work, as a complement
to design, and in checking that the
product corresponds to the standards
(type tests). The UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC
17025 standards are the reference
point for laboratories; SINAL (National
Laboratory Accreditation System)
attests that a laboratory complies
with these standards. The BTicino
Test Room is one of the rst Italian
laboratories to be accredited by
SINAL. 160 tests are subject to the
recognition. The list includes tests
of the IP degree of protection, of
shortcircuits, of mechanical and
electrical lifetime, of ageing, of heat
resistance etc. SINAL guarantees
the BTicino Test Rooms impartiality,
suitability and reliability. A further
demonstration of the BTicino Test
Rooms quality is that its Calibration
Centre has obtained the SIT
(Calibration Service in Italy).
The laboratory has also been qualied
by the ACAE in agreement with the
LOVAG procedures on the basis of

INTERLINK OFFICE 08/09 GENERAL CATALOGUE

INTERLINK OFFICE: the complete system for

distributing services
An ideal trunking system is represented by being
able to make a complete distribution without interruptions, guaranteeing maximum installation flexibility and supplying various solutions to meet the different requirements, guaranteeing maximum flexibility.
INTERLINK OFFICE is the ideal trunking solution for
the distribution of services in service sector environments. Adapted to a wide range of installation

solutions, this system can also be used in quality

environments.
Special attention has been paid to the various products such as the single-side columns which can be
fastened to the floor or ceiling (optional) if you have
ceilings or floors which cannot be damaged.

OFFICES
Special attention has been paid to offices, helped by
the solutions for the workstation which make all the
services directly available on the desk.
INTERLINK OFFICE can be used in small and mediumsized rooms and in open-space, thanks to the columns and mini-columns which can be connected
both to the floor distribution and to the ceiling distribution.
INTERLINK can also be integrated with all the BTicino
domestic series thanks to boxes and supporting frames which have been specially designed for installation inside trunking.

QUALITY ENVIRONMENTS
It is always difficult to distribute power, data and
lighting in quality environments. In fact they always
require unobtrusive products which require the least
working impact from the installation point of view.
Because of its various finishings and special accessories, INTERLINK fits perfectly in them.

SUPERMARKETS
The distribution of data, power and lighting is very
important and at certain points in particular a capillary
distribution is required (e.g. cash-till area). The integration of the ceiling system with the columns (can be
up to 5m high) means that any point can be reached
without particular problems.

FACTORIES
Thanks to internal separators the various services can
be distributed using a single trunking and special
systems (T60 trunking) can be used to give trunking
which is low cost but elegant and functional at the
same time.

distribution
A new way of
understanding
electrical
distribution
Especially designed for
rooms in the services
sector or for the
restoration of electrical
installations in home
surroundings, Interlink
is a complete trunking
system that comprises
mini trunking, deviceholder trunking, skirting
and angular trunking.

components, suitable
for any architectural
environment, and a
series of technicalfunctional solutions that

and allow the integration
of all BTicino series

Flixo fixing device

Cover joints

The Flixo exclusive fixing

device allows a quick laying of
the mini trunking without need
of any additional connection
system. After the installation,
the same device allows the
holding in place of the cables,
thus making the wiring easier.

The mini trunking cover

joints ensure the IP40
protection degree and
have the same smart
look of the straight
components.

T-junctions
Thanks to the adapters
supplied, these allow
joints at right-angle
and into trunking with
different sizes without
any need of knockouts.

Conformation to Standards
The accessories and the deviceholder and junction boxes are
equipped with partitions for
separating different circuits.

58

interlink OFFICE

In addition to ensuring an IP40

protection degree, the joint for
base and cover of mini trunking
and skirting is a useful cable
retaining clip.

Self-adapting

Innovative device-holdER
boxes

External and internal angles

patented for mini trunking as well
as for skirting.

They can be easily installed on the

MECHANICAL FEATURES OF ALUMINIUM TRUNKINGS

Material
The trunking is made in extruded aluminium with surface anodising.
Mechanical structure
The special profile of the trunking and the system for joining the linear
components mean that the deflection can be kept within the values laid
down by Standard CEI 23-31 (see table).
The conditions laid down by standard CEI 23-31 are ensured with the loads
indicated in the table because the deflection (f) is less than 0.02D, where D
is the distance between the support points.
This condition is checked by applying the distributed loads PD to the trunking
(this is the load per linear metre formed by the weight of the wires in the
trunking), as indicated in the table:

QUANTITY OF WIRES WHICH CAN BE INSTALLED IN WALL AND CEILING mountED TRUNKING WITH DEVICE-HOLDER BOXES AND ACCESSORIES

The information given in the table below refers to the installation of the
various device-holder boxes in the 120x60 mm compartment of the PVC and
aluminium trunking. No information is given on the remaining section of the
lower compartment of the bell-shaped trunking because:
the compartment has been sized for use mainly for the installation of
lamp-holder boxes. Any use of the compartment to house numerous wires
(use as wire-holder trunking) is forbidden;
the size of the device-holder boxes installed in the compartment has a
marginal influence on its total section. The remaining space can contain the
wires of any devices installed (IR receivers, smoke detectors etc.).

and mode of installation
The one-side columns and mini-columns differ in their front cover, which can
be CURVED or FLAT.
Specific INTERLINK OFFICE 2 and 4-place cover plates and supporting frames
can be installed on the columns and mini-columns with curved cover and
without necessarily using the bottom box.

The standard domestic series cover plates can be installed on those with flat
cover.
Thanks to accessories such as the separator or boxes for the installation of
the supporting frames, up to two services (e.g. power and data) can be
distributed in the columns and mini-columns.

MODE OF INSTALLING COMPLETE COLUMNS

Thanks to special anti-slip gaskets, supplied, the one-side columns can be

fastened installing nail anchors on the ceiling or, alternatively, on the floor.
This thus protects high-quality ceilings or floors. The package includes all the
components needed for the installation.
MODE OF INSTALLING COMPLETE MINI-COLUMNS

The package includes all the components needed for the installation of the
mini-column. The height of the complete mini-columns is designed for the
installation of five INTERLINK OFFICE 4-place supporting frames (item 120034
and 120035). The installation is completed with the specific surround plates.
MODE OF INSTALLING MODULAR COLUMNS

The columns can be installed using nail anchors on the ceiling or,
alternatively, on the floor. The fastening kits should be purchased because
they are not included in the package.

MODE OF INSTALLING MODULAR MINI-COLUMNS

The mini-columns can reach a maximum height of 1000mm and are made
by cutting a modular column to the height required. The floor installation
components are common to those of the columns. An end cap completes
the installation of the mini-column. The fastening kits should be purchased
because they are not included in the package.

INTERLINK OFFICE
Underfloor
distribution system
The underfloor distribution system is made up of trunking, intermediate
components, towers and components suitable for making electrical systems
with several separate services (power, telephone, auxiliaries) in both
medium and large rooms.
Most of the trunking components are made in thermoplastic material with
high mechanical resistance; some parts, such as flush-floor finishings which

can be walked on directly, are in aluminium, copper or steel.

Suitable accessories allow the union with the columns and from these to the
ceiling system.
The system is thus particularly suitable for satisfying system requirements in
modern business environments (open floor, movable dividers, etc.).

LAYING THE PATH COMPONENTS

Regardless of how the building to be wired was constructed (with floating

floor, traditional or prefabricated), the trunking must follow routes which are
independent of the final position of the furniture.
To guarantee the most complete flexibility for the underfloor distribution the
various junction points for the connection of the towers or columns should

Fig. 1 - Distribution with parallel backbones

be arranged not more than 2 metres apart.

The trunking can be with parallel backbone, see fig. 1, or with mesh. The
second method is more functional but at the same time more complex from
the point of view of carrying it out, see fig. 2.

Underfloor
device-holder boxes
Underfloor boxes conform to standards CEI 64-8 and IEC 61084-2-2. The degrees
of protection obtained are:
IP4X on the perimeter of the cover and between surround frame and floor
IP2X at the outlet of the wires from the cover
IP52 at the fastening between box and floor by means of a gasket
They are those laid down for the axis of insertion of horizontal plugs and for
installation on raised floors which are not cleaned with washing liquids.
The thermoplastic resins used (polycarbonate for cover, surround frame and
supporting frames ABS for enclosure) have the following properties of
resistance to abnormal heat and fire:
- UL VO
- CEI 50-11 IEC 695-2-1: 850C at the glow wire test
Underfloor boxes are connected to the underfloor distribution by wires. There
are cable clamps and passages with knockouts on all the sides and the
bottom, to be completed with the IP4X cable glands supplied. Installation in
raised floors requires the simple drilling of a square in the raised flooring;
fastening in the hole is by 4 brackets which hook on to the lower part of
the square. In traditional floors the boxes are installed using metal box item
150561S, item 150563S and item 150569S which must be connected to the
underfloor distribution system by the trunking.
The specific device-holder supporting frame item 150716 can be used to
install the modular DIN devices with capacity up to 2 modules in each
housing. The reversible cover is mounted by means of the two hinges after
the devices have been wired, ensuring the spontaneous and stable closing of
the box according to the provisions of standard CEI 64-8. The cover is opened
with the ergonomic handle. A steel reinforcement plate ensures the seal up
to a load of 3000N on the cover. Depending on the versions the cover has
stainless steel finishing with anti-slip incisions, or is set up for the insertion
of carpet, linoleum, etc., 4 or 8 mm thick.

Dimensioning
the lighting system
REQUIREMENTS FOR CORRECT LIGHTING

The following factors must be considered for the correct dimensioning of an

indoor lighting system:
- the type of activity carried out: determines the quantity of light which the
lighting system must supply in the room;
- the room dimensions and features: the larger the area to be lit the more
difficult it is to obtain a uniform lighting level everywhere;

- the position of the video terminals, windows and reflecting surfaces in

general: the position of the workstation has a determining effect on the
location of the lighting devices;
- how often the lighting system is maintained (yearly, six-monthly, etc.);
- the electrical power used (check of energy consumptions).

CALCULATION OF THE NUMBER OF LIGHTING COMPONENTS

The number of lighting components needed to light a room is determined

applying the following formula:
N = (E x a x b) / ( x U x M)

where:
E: lighting level required (in lux);
a and b: are the room dimensions (length and width in metres);
: characteristic light output emitted by each lamp (in lumen);
U: factor of use, can be obtained from the specific tables of each lighting
device;
M: lighting system maintenance factor.

Determining the maintenance factor M

The value of M is determined from the system maintenance factor and

concerns how frequently the lighting devices are checked and overhauled.
This type of data can be deduced from the following table taken from
standard UNI 10380.

Determining the lighting level E

The lighting level (Lu) is calculated by identifying the type of activity

performed. Table 1 gives the values of the light output laid down by
standard UNI 10380 for a correct lighting of some rooms of the service
sector. Table 1 also gives the chromatic features (colour tone and yield index)
of the lamps to be used for lighting. The COLOUR TONE columns gives the
type of light colour emitted by the lamp and expressed with letters W, I and
C as indicated below:
- W = white-hot light, temperature lower than 3300K
- I = white neutral light, temperature between 3300 and 5300K
- C = white-cold light, temperature higher than 5300K
These values indicate the characteristic light output of each lamp.
The COLOUR YIELD GROUP column gives the groups to which the colour
yield index Ra belongs. This parameter expresses how well the light source
renders the colours. Table 2 specifies the correspondence between colour
yield groups and indices Ra.
Example:
if we want to light an office with video terminals, we deduce from Table 1:
- The room must be lit with an average lighting of 500 lux (value to be
entered in the formula instead of E)
- Class B must be respected to check the dazzle and lamps with colour tone
not greater than 5300K and with a colour yield index 1B must be selected
In this case an INTERLINK OFFICE single lamp can be selected for 58W
fluorescent lamps with output of 5200 lumen (value given by the
manufacturer which in this case replaces the value of in the formula).

the lighting system
Example:

Determining the factor of use U

The value of U is determined by many factors:

- K indicates the room index value and is calculated from the area of the
room to be lit and the height of the light source with respect to the
working surface. One calculates:
K= a x b / h x (a + b)

To light a room with the following painting features:

- White ceiling: Table 3 gives a reflection value of 0.7
- Light grey wall: Table 3 gives a reflection value of 0.3
- Dark grey floor: Table 3 gives a reflection value of 0.1
To have the exact value to compare in Table 4 (on the first line which goes
from 873 to 000), the values mentioned above must be entered in the
following order:

Where a and b are the dimensions of the room

(width and length) and h is the height of the light
source with respect to the working surface

- From the room features, concerning the type of colour used to paint the
walls and ceiling, the colour of the floor and the type of furnishing
Light is diffused better in a room with lightly-coloured wall structures than in
the same room with dark walls or ceiling.
To take account therefore of the room features in the technical light design,
reflection indices have been defined for the walls, ceiling and floor as a
function of the different colour tones (table 3).
In general each manufacturer of lighting devices supplies a table for each
accessory which gives, in numeric form for the technical light calculation, the
device lighting properties as a function of the various reflection indices and
the size of the room. The numeric values are defined factors of use U of the
lighting device (table 4).
The relationship between Table 3 and Table 4 concerns the fact that the
values given in the reflection factors table refer to the data in the upper
line of the factor of use table.

ceiling walls floor

1st figure = reflection factor 0.7 of the very light ceiling
2nd figure = reflection factor 0.3 of the light wall
3rd figure = reflection factor 0.1 of the dark floor
finally one obtains the value: 731
Finally the value of U is obtained from Table 4 (given by the
manufacturer) using the calculated value of k and the value obtained as
explained in the example above.

INTERLINK OFFICE

POSITION OF THE TERMINALS, WINDOWS etc.

An up-to-date lighting system must be able to light the room uniformly

without causing:
- too accentuated shadows and contrasts, which could make it difficult to
recognise objects and evaluate shapes and colours;
- direct dazzle or reflection which, caused by the light reaching the observer
eyes directly or indirectly, cause visual tiredness and reduction of the visual
capacities.

Dazzle can be limited by selecting lighting devices with special shapes and
which have diffusers which concentrate the light output in precise directions.
To evaluate the most suitable device to limit dazzle, standard UNI 10380 lays
down the maximum allowed brightness values.
These values, referred as function of angle of observation of the device
and the lighting on the horizontal surface, are expressed with a diagram
called Limit brightness curve (see fig. 1 and 2).

To avoid these problems the lighting devices must not be positioned behind
the operator or in a position such that the light reaches the eyes directly or
by reflection.

Dimensioning
the lighting system
The brightness limit curves differ by class of system quality, in relation to the
type of activity carried out in the room, as indicated in Table 5.
Using the brightness limit curve diagram we can check whether a lighting
device satisfies the requirements for lighting the room without dazzle.
After establishing the level of lighting required and the quality class for the
limitation of dazzle, the device selected may be considered suitable for use
if its brightness curves, supplied by the Manufacturer, are to the left of the
reference limit curve.

The lighting device chosen can thus be used for our requirements.
As the device curves are also to the left of the limit curve for class A with
500 and 1000 lux and class B with 1000 and 2000 lux, the lighting device
can also be used in rooms where high lighting values are required.

From the lighting table we find that the room being examined should have a
lighting level of 500 lux with dazzle class B.
Using the device brightness curves, we can note that these are positioned
to the left of the limit curve for quality class B and the lighting value of 500
lux, for any value of the observation angle.

INTERLINK OFFICE

INTERLINK OFFICE
Example: office with video terminals
From the table of the device factors of use we consider the value K = 2.5
as closest reference and the value 551 deduced from the room features:

We want to light an office 10 metres long, 8 metres wide and 3 metres high,
with video terminals, with direct light.
The desks are 0.8 metres high.
The walls are painted with a light colour and the floor is dark.

1st figure = reflection factor 0.5 of the light ceiling

2nd figure = reflection factor 0.5 of the light walls
3rd figure = reflection factor 0.1 of the dark floor

From the lighting table we find that the room being examined, for the type
of activity performed, should be lit with an average lighting of 500 lux.
Also we must respect class B for the control of dazzle and select lamps with
colour tone not greater than 5300 K and with colour yield index 1B.

We extrapolate the value of the factor of use U of 0.463.

Given that the room is clean and no activity is carried out which involves
the spreading of dust, we can assume a maintenance factor M of 0.8
(routine maintenance).
Entering all the values available in the formula we determine the number
of lighting devices needed:

As lighting accessories we decide to use INTERLINK 58W one-lamp for

fluorescent lamps with output of 5200 lumen, installed suspended at a
height of 2.5 metres.
We decide to use Dark Light diffusers as, because they greatly limit the
brightness of the lamps, they are particularly suitable for the diffuse lighting
of rooms with video terminals.

N=

As we know the features of the rooms and the lamps to use, we determine
the index K of the room from the following formula:

Observing the brightness curves of the device chosen we note that the
device can light the room without creating any dazzle up to lighting
values of 2000 lux (see fig. 4).

K = (a x b)/h x (a+b)= (10x8)/1.7(10+8) = 2.61
