Schmitz honored for service on Hamilton board

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

Hamilton School Board member Gerald Schmitz was honored

last week for his time on the
Hamilton School Board, which
spanned 40 years.
"We were trying to identify
some good quotes and all the
ones that resonated were about
humility of a leader, and that
really who Jerry Schmitz is,"
Hamilton
School
District
Superintendent Kathleen Cooke
said during a presentation at the
Jan. 5 Hamilton School Board
meeting.
Schmitz will not be seeking
another term on the Hamilton
board, and his current term will
expire in April. Schmitz's family
attended the meeting for the
presentation.
Cooke recalled that approximately 25 years ago a village
trustee in one of the communities served by the Hamilton district approached Schmitz and
"chewed him out," complaining
about "issues in the Hamilton
School District. Cooke said

ers took the criticism to heart,

and have been focused on
improving the district.
Cooke later said the person
came across Schmitz "not too
long ago" and praised the district for its improvement.
Cooke cited campaign literature from Schmitz approximately 15 years ago, which cited
increased student achievement,
eight new building additions and
one new school that had been
constructed by that time.
Cooke said that since the
campaign literature was presented, the district academic
performance has continued to
improve and is now listed as
"significantly exceeds expectations." Also, a fine arts center
has been constructed at the
high school, there have been
three classroom additions while
the Hamilton Athletic Center
was constructed at the high
school. Also, since Schmitz
started with the board, the
Hamilton Education Foundation
was created and has raised $1
million in private funds to support innovative programming in

the district.
Cooke also mentioned that at
the time Schmitz joined the
board, district enrollment was at
4,000 then dipped to 2,400
before increasing to 4,700. Also,
the district has started a strategic planning process and each
district building has site plans
while the district has expanded
4- and 5-year-old kindergarten
programs.
"All of this has occurred
through steady, focused leadership," Cooke said.
Schmitz was presented with
a school bell by board President
Gabe Kolesari. Kolesari noted the
Schmitz also served on the
Lisbon Town Board for several
years.
"We rode the good times and
the bad times together here, and
there's a lot of stories to tell,"
Kolesari said. "It's been a pleasure working with you."
In his comments to the
board, Schmitz recalled that his
son Mike was in kindergarten or
first grade when he started serving on the board.
"It's all of us together that

has done this, it's not me, it's
not Gabe," Schmitz said, mentioning other board members.
"It's all the administration,
we've always been a team, and
that's what turned the district
around."
Schmitz thanked the community for their support.
"We can't do it without
them," Schmitz said.

Bud Walsh is retiring.

After 49 years in the jewelry business, it is time to turn the keys over to a new generation.
Bud has been active in the community for all these
years, and has come to know so many of you by name.
From class rings to engagement rings and so many milestones in local families, Bud has enjoyed the privilege of
being a part of so many of these events through the generations.
Shawn Walsh, Bud's eldest son has worked by his side
in the jewelry business, watching the trends and industry
change. During all that time their dedication to serving the
community has not changed. Whether helping a client
choose the right gift, or creating something entirely custom, Bud's commitment to value has never wavered. Bud
has been active in Rotary and has been recognized nationally as an Outstanding Young Man in Business.
"Although I have enjoyed these years working in a
career I love, it is time for me to take a step in a new direction. As I enter my fiftieth year in the jewelry business, It's
time for me to spend more time with my wife Mary Pat.
We look forward to doing some traveling and spending
more time with our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But don't be surprised to see me in the store from
time to time, because my heart is still in the business that
has been so much a part of me for all these years."
"In celebration of my retirement we will be offering
large discounts on all in-stock merchandise. We have
many beautiful pieces of jewelry on-hand for yourself or
that special someone in your life."

That not only means food but also toys and treats. We as Pet Parents ourselves
want the best products to ensure a long and healthy life for our pets as well as

everyone is to Read the Labels and ask questions. We dont have all the answers

staff carries a possible sentence of a
$10,000 fine, six years in jail, or both.
During an appearance in court Jan.
4, Novak waived her right to a preliminary hearing. Defense attorney Michael
Hart entered a not guilty plea on behalf
of Novak. Bail had been set at $100,000
for Novak after she was charged Dec.
22. Hart requested that the bail be
reduced. He noted that Novak had not
engaged in any criminal conduct previously and had earned a master's degree.
"I don't, under any analysis, understand the $100,000. I believe that not
only to be excessive but grossly excessive," Hart said. "There was no argument or evidence presented at the time
of the initial appearance that Ms. Novak
was at risk for flight."
He added that Novak "has some
mental health issues that require treatment. While at a bare minimum she is
receiving (medication) at the county
jail, she is certainly is not receiving the
amount of care and treatment we as a
system, would hope people in her situation, would receive."
He said that a cash bail is appropriated and requested bail be reduced to
$10,000.

Assistant District Attorney Ted S.

Szczupakiewicz said "a substantial cash
bail is appropriate given the nature of
the charges and the number of
charges.
Szczupkiewicz added that during the
initial hearing there were statements
presented in which Novak said to officers she had thoughts of crashing her
car with her children in the vehicle. In
response, Hart noted one of the conditions included Novak not having unsupervised contact with her two children.
Court Commissioner Thomas Pieper
reduced the bail to a $10,000 cash bail
and a $25,000 signature bond.
Conditions that she not have contact
with the victim or students at
Menomonee Falls High School or unsupervised contact with anyone under age
18 remain in place.
Afterward, Hart said he hoped
Novak to make the bail "to get her the
help she needs. She's a sick woman,"
adding that his client had mental
health issues.
The next hearing on the matter will
be before Circuit Judge Ralph Ramirez
at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 22.

January is National Radon Action Month

Wisconsin health officials, as part of
National Radon Action Month, are
encouraging homeowners to check their
home's radon levels because exposure to
radioactive radon gas is the leading
cause of lung cancer among non-smokers nationwide.
Radon is an odorless radioactive gas
that is naturally present in the ground
and can enter buildings through their
foundations. Both old and newer homes
can be susceptible to radon. Between 5
and 10 percent of Wisconsin homes
have elevated airborne concentrations
on the main living level where people
spend the most time, according to state
data.
An estimated 20,000 lung cancer
deaths are caused by radon annually
among non-smokers, according to
reports
by
the
Environmental
Protection Agency and the U.S. Surgeon

General.
Radon is an easily mitigated heath
risk. The small cost of the kit, available
either through the County or at your
local hardware store, is well worth the
peace of mind knowing that your home
and family are safe and healthy, stated Waukesha County Executive Paul
Farrow.
More than 60 radon mitigation contractors in Wisconsin are nationally certified and install highly effective soildepressurization radon control systems.
Thousands of systems are installed in
existing homes in Wisconsin each year.
New construction should include features recommended by the National
Association of Home Builders to reduce
radon entry.

their core course recommendations at

asks them to think about the challenges
and opportunities the district will face in
the next five years and express their
views on what the next superintendent
will need to be successful. The survey
can be found on the district website at
www.hamilton.k12.wi.us.
A similar survey is being offered to
employees. Along with the surveys, the
School Board scheduled focus groups to
hear from school and community groups.
Feedback from the surveys and focus
groups will be compiled and reviewed as
the School Board identifies the profile of
the ideal candidate for the position.
The deadline for the survey is Jan.

Unique ways to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Few people in American history have
had as strong an impact on the United
States as Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil
rights leader who was slain in 1968 at the
age of 39. Through his message of nonviolence and civil disobedience as a means
to advancing civil rights for all people,
King changed the lives of millions. Those
changes are still felt today, nearly half a
century after his death.
Though his death was tragic, King's
life remains something to celebrate, a fact
recognized by the federal government in
1983, when President Ronald Reagan
signed a bill creating a federal holiday to
honor King. Since 2000, all 50 states have
observed the holiday, which has been
observed on the third Monday of January
each year since 1992. For many, Martin

Luther King, Jr. Day is a time to reflect on

King's life and advance his message.
Children do not have school on Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day, making the holiday
an ideal time for parents to teach their
kids about King and his lasting legacy.
The following are a few unique ways
adults and children alike can celebrate
the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Give back to your community. A
community leader who made countless
sacrifices for both his own community
and the nationwide community of those
denied their civil rights, King is perhaps
best honored by those who make efforts
to give back to their communities. Parents
can take their youngsters to volunteer
and help the less fortunate, be it working
at a soup kitchen or an assisted living
facility. Many communities host outreach
events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and
adults and children can take advantage of
such events to honor King's legacy.
Read about the Civil Rights
Movement with your children. Thanks to
advancements in technology, men,
women and children now have a wealth of
information at their fingertips. This
makes it easy for parents to discuss the
Civil Rights Movement, and King's role in
that movement, with their children. The
older kids are, the more detailed parents
can be when explaining the struggles
King encountered. Even adults without
children are likely to be enlightened by

studying the Civil Rights Movement and

King's life in closer detail.
Listen to or read King's speeches.
Renowned for his abilities as an orator,
King gave numerous speeches throughout
his life, many of which are equally, if not
more, moving today than they were during his lifetime. While King's "I Have a
Dream" speech delivered in 1963 on the
steps of the Lincoln Memorial is widely
known, King gave many more speeches
throughout his lifetime. Such speeches
are an invaluable resource for those interested in learningaaabout the life of King
and his beliefs.

My name is Paris and I am a handsome little guy. I

was transferred from Fox Valley Humane Association
due to lack of space. I am originally from an
overcrowded shelter in Mississippi so I am a refined
southern gentleman. I am only 5-10 pounds at 2
months old and will stay pretty small even as an adult. I am good with and
respectful of cats. I would be good with dogs too but prefer smaller, gentle
ones because I am a perfect distinguished boy. I take treats gently and do
very well with food and other valuable resources and I am really tolerant of
all kinds of handling. My new home could have children of any age. I can be
a bit vocal and since I am just a pup I have some learning to do. I need to
practice walking on a leash and need to work on potty training. These things

am sure to dazzle you with my exquisite nature and shower you with kisses.

Tip of the Week: Avoid antifreeze poisoning. Antifreeze is a deadly poison, but it has a sweet taste that may attract
animals and children. Wipe up spills and keep antifreeze (and all household chemicals) out of reach. Coolants and
antifreeze made with propylene glycol are less toxic to pets, wildlife and family. License Number #266935-DS
