9th / 10th January 2016

Dear Parishioners,
The Feast of the Lords Baptism marks the end of the Christmas celebration and ushers us
into the ordinary season of the Churchs liturgical calendar. John baptised people with the
baptism of repentance and yet Jesus, who was without sin, availed himself for John to
baptise him. Why the need?
Jesus baptism teaches us two main lessons. Firstly, Jesus identifies himself with us by
showing his solidarity with the human race, which he comes to save. Secondly, Jesus,
stepping into the Jordan, sanctifies the water of baptism so that our sins are washed away
and we come to the state of grace in order to follow him.
The Blessed Trinity was also manifested in the baptism of the Lord Jesus. The gospel
passage brings out clearly to mind while Jesus (the SON) after his own baptism was at
prayer, heaven opened and the HOLY SPIRIT descended on him in bodily shape like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven (the FATHER), You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests
on you. As Catholics we are also baptised into the Blessed Trinity. The minister proclaims
[N] I baptise you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
The celebration of our Lords Baptism reminds us of our own baptism by which our sins
(both original and personal sins) are washed away. Baptism, as a sacrament of initiation,
sets us free from sin for us to acquire the state of grace that makes us part of the Body of
Christ; the Church. Baptism is the gateway to all other sacraments. Let us try and live our
baptismal promises and also bring our newly born babies to receive this wonderful
sacrament.
Thank God today marks the 6th anniversary of my ordination into the ministerial
priesthood. Time flies! There are a lot happening within this period that I am sincerely
thankful to God and indeed all family and friends who have journeyed with me thus far. The
Christian family I have here in St. John Vianney Parish has been so wonderful in diverse
ways and I cannot just thank you enough. Thank you for all your presents and friendship.
Please continue to pray for me and I do pray for you. God bless you all!
Next Sunday is Peace Sunday: The message for this day from Pope Francis World Peace
Message 2016 is: Slaves no more, but brothers and sisters.
It also marks the week of Prayer for Christian unity 18 25 January. We pray for unity
among Christians as Jesus prayed: that all may be one.

Fr. Samuel
