Wholesale Price Index

Foreign TradeMerchandise

The year-on-year (y-o-y) inflation rate based on WPI stood at -1.99% in


November 2015. Thus, the deflationary trend persisted for 13 months in a row
since November 2014 (-0.17%). The inflation rate of primary articles group
increased by 2.3% in November 2015 compared to -0.4% in October 2015 and
-1.6% in November 2014. The inflation for food articles rose to 5.2% in November
2015, the highest in the last 7 months. The fuel and power index remained
negative at -11.1%, y-o-y, in November 2015. The index for manufactured
products declined by -1.4% in November 2015 against inflation of 1.9% a year ago.

The merchandise trade deficit narrowed by 39.8% to $9.8 billion (bn) in


November 2015 compared to $16.2 bn in November 2014. Exports contracted for
the 12th consecutive month in November 2015 by 24.4% to $20 bn from $26.5 bn a
year ago, and imports fell by 30.3% to $29.8 bn from $42.7 bn. Cumulative exports
for AprilNovember 2015, stood at $174.3 bn, 18.5% lower compared to $213.8 bn
reported in the same period last year. Cumulative imports also shrank by 17.2% to
$261.9 bn from $316.3 bn registered a year ago. Similarly, cumulative oil imports
decreased by 42.4% to $61.4 bn and non-oil imports by 14.6% to $87.5 bn

Consumer Price Index

Index of Industrial Production

CPI inflation rate rose to 5.4%, y-o-y, in November 2015, from 5% in October 2015
and 3.3% in November 2014, led by an increase in food prices. The food price
inflation rate rose by 6.1%, y-o-y, in November, compared to 5.3% a month ago and
3.8% a year ago. Both CPI-rural and CPI-urban inflation rates increased by 6% and
4.7%, respectively, in November 2015, compared to 3.2% and 3.5% a year ago. As
per Labour Bureau data, CPI inflation for agricultural labourers increased by 4.9%
in November compared to 4.4%, in October 2015. Inflation for industrial workers
was 6.3% in October 2015 against 5.1% in September 2015.

The y-o-y growth in IIP went up by 9.8% in October 2015 against 3.8% a month ago
(and was -2.7% in October 2014). This was led by growth in the manufacturing sector
which surged by 10.6% compared to 2.9% a month ago. As per use-based classification,
growth in basic goods slowed to 4.1% in October 2015 compared to 9.7% a year ago,
while capital goods and intermediate goods expanded by 16.1% and 6.7%, respectively,
from a contraction of 3.2% and 3.4%. Consumer goods grew at 18.4% (-18.2% a year
ago), as growth in consumer durables increased by 42.2% in October 2015 compared to
-35.2% a year ago.
