Matthew 3:13-17 New International Version (NIV)

The Baptism of Jesus
13
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried
to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?
15
Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented.
16
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven
was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
17
And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well
pleased.

THE LORDS PRAYER (In Unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for
ever and ever. Amen.

elcome to New Hope Church! If you are visiting, you will discover a loving,
spirit-filled church family. Here is some helpful information as you join us in
worship today:
All who worship here are equals in the sight of God, regardless of race, age, gender, physical disability or religious affiliation.
Communion, when celebrated, is open to all who profess Christ as Lord and Savior, whether affiliated with this church or not. Children may partake of Communion as well, if parents approve.
A nursery is available during the service; please see a greeter for directions. (This
is for infants and children up to 3 years of age.)
Handicap-accessible restrooms are located off the Welcome Room (main foyer)
and adjacent to the entrance lobby in the Fellowship Hall/Gym.
Please complete the tear-off Connection Card attached to the bulletin and drop it in
the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit with us today.
Thank you for remembering to silence your cell phone during the service.
We ask that there be no food or beverages in the sanctuary, please.
If you arrived as a visitor, we hope that you leave as a new friend
and worship with us often!

Ministries/Activities Calendar

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the construction of the new sanctuary,
classrooms and office building. Our first service was January 8, 2006 with over
200 members, family, friends and visitors in attendance. There was no sound
system, no stain glass (up front), no grand piano and no projector. All this has
since come. God has truly blessed us over the last ten years and time flies!
The Church Session will meet for its regular monthly meeting this Tuesday
evening at 6:30 in the church conference room.
2016 Valentine Banquet Sign-up for this years Valentine Banquet, to be held
Friday evening, February 5 at 6:00. The menu is steak or chicken, baked potatoes, salad, and sundaes for dessert. This will be a very special evening for the
wonderful women of New Hope. It is also a great opportunity to invite your unchurched friends, work associates, neighbors, and family members. We will
need people to make reservations so we know how many to prepare for. MEN
Let Pastor Paul know if you are donating food or will be here to help on February 5. If you are donating money to help pay for the meal please put it in the offering and make sure it is clearly marked for that purpose. Be watching and listening for more information.
2016 Offering Envelopes are available on the old communion table in the Welcome Hall. We can express our gratitude to God for the grace we have received
in Jesus Christ by giving generously to the work of his church. Giving with regularity is an opportunity to grow in our faith and obedience to Gods word. Using the envelopes enables you to designate the ministry(s) to which you are giving and also ensures that you will receive proper documentation of your giving
for tax purposes.
Mens Saturday Fellowship - We had a great men's gathering January 2. Ham
and Sausage Biscuits (thanks to Karen Haynes), a challenging Bible study led by
Rich Binney, a meaningful time of prayer, and great fellowship. We also began
the planning for the Valentine Banquet. Remember we do this the first Saturday
of each month at 8 am in the kitchen (we can move into fellowship hall when
there are too many to sit around the kitchen table). Next meeting is February 6!
Wednesday Bible Study/Prayer has resumed and our topic for Wednesday,
January 13 is Cussing. What, if anything, does the Bible say about it? Why
are certain words bad? Come join our discussion but watch your mouth!
Compassionate Hands - December 1, 2015 - March 14, 2016. New Hope will
serve as a host site on Saturday nights. We will host homeless men and need
male volunteers to stay overnight here at the church, as well as other volunteer
positions. If you would like to volunteer for this ministry opportunity, sign the
back of the tear-off part of the program, contact Alene Gibson, Lee Ann Crosslin, the Pastor or call the church at 444-7020.

Thought for the Week

The Jordon
The River Jordan flows southward through the Holy Land. For the most part it is
neither beautiful nor peaceful. It's 25 percent mud and plunges downhill at a furious
pace, falling nine feet per mile.
The 158-mile river begins in the snows of Mount Herman at a point 260 feet above
sea level. By the time it empties into the Dead Sea, at a point 1,287 feet below sea
level, the water has reached the lowest point on earth.
Ironically, the river that has inspired thousands
of hymns sung by millions the world over, and
on whose banks the words were uttered that influenced the course of mankind, today serves as
a barrier for thirty miles for the hostile nations of
Israel and Syria.
Amid the unbeautiful, sometimes furious river,
east of Jericho, there is a lovely bend called Makhadet-Al-Hijla, or the Ford of the Partridge. It's
a place of great beauty, shaded by willows and
eucalyptus trees, much as it was in New Testament times. Here, according to tradition, Jesus
was baptized by John the Baptist.
How symbolic. The place of our baptism is a
spot of beauty and peace amid a furious flowing river of hate and strife. When Jesus
was confronted by those who sought to take Him, He "went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode" (John 10:40).
Whether at this location on the Jordan, or another, Jesus found refuge from the
trials of life, at the place of His baptism. And we can, too. When difficulties seem
more than we can bear, going back to our baptismal experience puts it all in perspective.

Lectionary
First Sunday after the Epiphany/Baptism of the Lord. Color: White or Gold.
Isaiah 43:1-7. God will protect, ransom and re-gather the people Israel from all the
corners of the earth.
Psalm 29. The voice of the LORD speaks, and all heaven and nature shake and stand
in awe.
Acts 8:14-17. Peter and John complete the baptism would-be disciples of Jesus had
received by laying hands on them so they may receive the Holy Spirit.
Luke 3:15-17, 21-22. John the Baptizer announces he is not the messiah but one
mightier than he comes after him baptizing with Holy Spirit and fire. After Jesus was
baptized by John and while he was praying, the Holy Spirit descended and a voice
from heaven claimed Jesus as Beloved Son.
