1 - INTRODUCTION :
This report presents the results of the subsurface soil investigation
conducted at the proposed site of the Syrian metals industry S M I.-Rolling Mill
The project is a steel Billet manufacturing plant with a capacity of
630.000t/y of billets, the site is situated in Adraa Industrial City, near Damascus.
The objectives of the investigation are to determine in detail the soil
conditions at the proposed location of the buildings of the steel factory, and
based on these conditions come out by the investigation, we will recommend
the most suitable type of foundations .
2 - PROJECT AND SITE DESCRIPTION:
The site of the factory is located near the head office of the adraa
industrial city .
There are a previous geotechnical report for the SMI, and this report is for the
Rolling Mill.
The surface of the ground of the factory is nearly flat.
3 - SCOPE OF WORK :
The characteristics of the subsurface soil of the site were determined
using the following data :
a - The results of 12 test borings which was driven to 15-20 meters
depth below ground level , including SPT .
b - A variety of laboratory tests .
c - Our experience in the subsurface conditions of the surrounding
area .
d- The previous Geotechnical reoprt for SMI
All field and laboratory data were analyzed and studied, in order to obtain
the most economical and more suitable foundation solutions .

4 - FIELD INVESTIGATION:
Over the period between 17/6/2010 to 21/6/2010 boring program was
performed on the project area which included 12 boreholes, from 1 to 12.
Three boreholes (1-5-8) were 20 m of depth below the ground surface and the
remaining were 15 m of depth.
4-1 The drilling process : Starting from existing base of
excavation, the drilling process was conducted using a heavy duty, three rotary
drilling machines with AW rods and NX casing , which are capable of driving a
4-inch cased hole .
4-2 Sampling : samples of soil were obtained at each change of
stratum and, 3 sampls from each borehole approximately .The sampling
operation is done by the chopping bit of the pipes ( dry sampling ) . The samples
were placed in plastic bags labeled with boring number , depth from which they
were taken and identification of the soil . The samples were transported to soil
testing laboratory in Damascus for visual inspection and testing . Where
undisturbed soil couldnt be recovered, disturbed samples of soil were recovered
from the boring.
4-3 Ground water observations: It was intended to observe the
free ground water elevation when it was encountered, to be measured for each
borehole at the end of boring and to be recorded on the log sheets . Generally for
the time being , the ground water wasnt encountered at a level of 20 m below
existing ground surface.
4-4 In-situ testing
SPT: During the drilling operations, Standard Penetration Tests were performed
and undisturbed and

disturbed samples were obtained for each stratum

encountered .The test was carried out by driving the standard split spoon
sampler , 18" in ( 45 cm ) in length and 35 mm ID by 50 mm OD , into the soil

6 of 111

and counting the blows required to a set of three spacings, 6 inches each . The
blows were imparted by a 140-lb ( 64 kg ) weight falling a distance of 30" in. (
76 cm ) onto the drill rod to which the spoon was attached . The number of
blows for the three 15 cm successive increments were recorded . The penetration
number , referred to as the penetration resistance N ,the values are recorded in
the logs of the boreholes.
During drilling operations of the boreholes, we contiued to observe the sides of
all boreholes, we found that it was standing vertically and no sides had collapsed
inside these boreholes; this ovbsrvation means that soil is cohesive.
5 - LABORATORY TESTING:
A large number of samples were tested in the laboratory to determine the
physical properties, the shear strength parametrs and the engineering
characteristics of the various soil strata as shown on laboratory sheets . For
foundations study purposes , the following tests were performed on the soil
samples to allow the determination of their physical and mechanical properties :
- water content
- natural unit weight
- liquid and plastic limits
- sieve analysis
- direct shear testing
- Consoldation test
- Swelling test
Undisturbed specimens were used in performing water content and unit
weight tests, while part of sample passing sieve No. 40 was utilized for liquid
and plastic limits , representative samples was utilized for sieve analysis and
undisturbed soil specimens were used to perform undrained and unconsolidated
shear box tests. and for consolidation tests. The results of all the above
mentioned tests are summarized in the following tables, sieve test curves are

7 of 111

shown on the particle size distribution sheets .

From the previous geotechnical report and due to our experience , the soil
contains sulphate materials , so It is need to use sulphate resistant cement to
protect reinforced concrete , foundations, from the influence of sulphates of soil.
Table No1. summarizes the results of tested samples of 12 borehole. And
the average values for every layer.
6 - SUBSURFACE SOIL CONDITIONS :
The current soil surface is below the natural ground level with about 1-2.5m,
and the (x,y,z)for each borehole is attached to the report.
In general, a simple pattern of stratification of the subsoil was prevailed.
By checking the soil materials washed during drilling from the boreholes on the
ground surface , the colour of the washed water and the results of the laboratory
tests, it was possible to distinguish the following strata of soil from top of
existing ground surface to the bottom of the boreholes , as follows :
1

Gray cohesive to stiff lime clay, with medium to high

resistance to drilling. its thickness was 1.5-3 m . and sometimes Rocky lime
clay. And its classification - CL - according to USC.
2- Yellowish Gray lime clay, with medium resistance to drilling. its
thickness was 1.5-4 m . And its classification CL-MH - according to USC.
3 Light yellowish brown lime clay, with medium resistance to
drilling, to the end of the depth of the boreholes. And its classification ML- CL
- according to USC.
During drilling operations no loss of boring water was recorded, which means
that no cavities were encountered.
Attached figures show log sheets, which contain the description of the
materials encountered within the depths of test borings , the soil layers , and the
results of the Standard Penetration Tests.

7 - ENGINEERING DESIGN:
7-1 Determination of foundation soil , its depth and type of
foundations : Our design will be based on the analysis of boreholes
stratification, samples description , SPT field testing, which showed that nearly
all tests reached the value N= 39 to the second layer, and the thierd layer,and
N= 50 for the first layer, and laboratory testing.
We interpret the difference between SPT value in the previous report and this
one is :the time which boreholes and SPT were done, in the previous report It
was in 12/2008 "winter" and in this report It was in 6/2010 "summer" and the
soil is so sensitiv to the water, it become harder when it is more dry.
The probable performance of the foundation materials must be judged with
respect to the inter-related properties of strength and settlement . The subsurface
materials upon which a structure may be founded must be able to support the
structure without a bearing failure, besides, the settlement of the structure, due
to densification of the materials beneath the foundation, mustn't be so great or
uneven as to cause damage to the structure .
the top arable layer was found only in Borehole No1, with 60cm
thickness , so it is recommended to adopt the first layer as a foundation soil
"Gray cohesive to stiff lime clay" , thus the geotechnical level of foundation will
be 1m at least below the existing level of soil, and will be on the stratum of Gray
cohesive lime clay co, with medium resistance to drilling, which is more suitable
to support the foundations of the building. And if some parts of the factory has
deep structral foundation level, so the second layer which is Yellowish Gray
lime clay, with medium resistance to drilling

is suitable

to support the

foundations of the building

Due to the variation of the type of buildings in the factory , so the foundation
structural level , type and dimensions are different, therefore we will study three
cases, and later on we will study in details every foundation by Plaxis3D in

9 of 111

appendant report.
Case No.1: Single foundations:
We will calculate tow models:
Model 1: 4*6 m and Model 2: 2.5*2.5
7-2 Bearing capacity considerations : The bearing capacity of the first layer
for a single foundations is given by the following expression :
Qult=(1+0.3B/L)*C*Nc+(1+0.3B/L)**D*Nq+(1-0.3B/L)**B*N
Where:
Nc , Nq and N are the bearing capacity factors which depend on the angle of
internal friction.
C is the consistency of the soil which we suppose to be equal to 0.40kg/cm2
is the unit weight of the soil and we consider a value of 1.98 ton/m3.

Df is the depth of embedment of the single foundation below the surface of the
ground , and we consider 1 m .
B is the breadth of the single foundation of the structure.
L is the length of the single foundation of the structure.
This expression shows that the bearing capacity of a soil depends not only
on its engineering properties , but also on the shape and size of the footing , and
on its depth of embedment .
For an estimated average field value of internal friction angle we suppose
for the soil of foundation

Nc = 13.1

= 18o, the bearing capacity parameters are :

Nq = 5.3

N = 1.4

By substitution we find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil :

Qult1 = (1+0.3*4/6)*4*13.1+(1+0.3*4/6)*1.98*1*5.3+(1-0.3*4/6)*1.98*4*1.4 =
84 t/m2
Qult2 = 1.3*4*13.1+1.3*1.98*1*5.3+1.7*1.98*2.5*1.4 = 87 t/m2
By considering a factor of safety of 3, we find the allowable bearing
capacity as :

10 of 111

Pall1= 84/(3*10) = 2.8 kg/cm2

Pall2= 87/(3*10) = 2.9 kg/cm2
to decrease the value of expected settlement, we take as an allowed
bearing capacity the values:
Pall1= 2 kg/cm2
Pall2= 2 kg/cm2
A settlement value not exceeding the limit of 8 cm will be considered in
the elasticity range .
7-3 Settlement considerations : Based on the subsurface
conditions obtained from the test borings evaluation and analysis of the
laboratory tests ,we believe that the lime clay is capable to support the single
foundation of the structure without excessive settlement , and the most of the
estimated settlement is expected to be instantaneous and in the limits of allowed
values .
To compute settlements of the foundation we use an equation based on
the theory of elasticity :
2
S = qBIw(1 - )/E

where
S = calculated settlement in cm .
q = intensity of contact pressure .
B = breadth of the single foundation in cm.

= Poison's ratio which equals for the soil 0.35 .

E = modulus of elasticity of soil, and from the result of plate load tests and SPT
we estimate that it equals approximately 300 kg/cm2.
Iw = influence factor.

11 of 111

Df = the depth of the foundation from the natural ground level not from the
recent ground level.
by substituting , we find :
S1 = 2-(2*1.98/10) 400 1 (1-0.35 0.35)/300 = 1.9 cm
S2 = 2-(2*1.98/10) 250 0.85 (1-0.35 0.35)/300 = 1 cm
The actual value of settlement is expected to be lower than the calculated
value, and it will occur mainly during the constrution period of the reinforced
concrete structural system of the building.
So it is assumed that the allowable soil pressures determined previously
will govern the design of the foundations .
7-4 Bearing capacity based on results of field standard
penetration tests : Nearly, all the results of SPT tests reached the value 39 for
the foundation layer, which match the above calculated value .
Case No.2: Mat foundations:
We will calculate tow models:
Mat1: 17*27 m and Mat2: 12.5*22
7-2 Bearing capacity considerations : The bearing capacity of the first layer
for a mat foundations is given by the following expression :
Qult=(1+0.3B/L)*C*Nc+(1+0.3B/L)**D*Nq+(1-0.3B/L)**B*N
Where:
Nc , Nq and N are the bearing capacity factors which depend on the angle of
internal friction.
C is the consistency of the soil which we suppose to be equal to 0.4kg/cm2
is the unit weight of the soil and we consider a value of 1.98 ton/m3.

Df is the depth of embedment of the mat foundation below the surface of

ground , and we consider 1 m .
B is the breadth of the mat foundation of the structure.

12 of 111

L is the length of the mat foundation of the structure.

This expression shows that the bearing capacity of a soil depends not only
on its engineering properties , but also on the shape and size of the footing , and
on its depth of embedment .
For an estimated average field value of internal friction angle we suppose
for the soil of foundation

Nc = 13.1

= 18o, the bearing capacity parameters are :

Nq = 5.3

N = 1.4

By substitution we find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil :

Qult1 = (1+0.3*17/27)*4*13.1+(1+0.3*17/27)*1.98*1*5.3+(10.3*17/27)*1.98*17*1.4 = 102 t/m2
Qult2 = (1+0.3*12.5/22)*4*13.1+(1+0.3*12.5/22)*1.98*1*5.3+(10.3*12.5/22)*1.98*12.5*1.4 = 112 t/m2
By considering a factor of safety of 3, we find the allowable bearing
capacity as :
Pall1= 102/(3*10) = 3.4 kg/cm2
Pall2= 112/(3*10) = 3.7 kg/cm2
to decrease the value of expected settlement, we take as an allowed
bearing capacity the values:
Pall1= 1.5 kg/cm2
Pall2= 1.7 kg/cm2
A settlement value not exceeding the limit of 15 cm will be considered in
the elasticity range .
7-3 Settlement considerations : Based on the subsurface
conditions obtained from the test borings evaluation and analysis of the
laboratory tests ,we believe that the lime clay is capable to support the mat
foundation of the structure without excessive settlement , and the most of the

13 of 111

estimated settlement is expected to be instantaneous and in the limits of allowed

values .
To compute settlements of a mat foundation we use an equation based on
the theory of elasticity :
2
S = qBIw(1 - )/E

where
S = calculated settlement in cm .
q = intensity of contact pressure .
B = breadth of the mat foundation

= Poison's ratio which equals for the soil 0.35 .

E = modulus of elasticity of soil, and from the result of plate load tests and SPT
we estimate that it equals approximately 300 kg/cm2.
Iw = influence factor which equals for the raft foundation a value of 1.8.
Df = the depth of the foundation from the natural ground level not from the
recent ground level.
by substituting , we find :
S1 = 1.5-(2*1.98/10) 1700 1.8 (1-0.35 0.35)/300 = 9.8 cm
S2 = 1.7-(2*1.98/10) 1250 2 (1-0.35 0.35)/300 = 9.5 cm
The calculated settlement is in the limits of allowed values and the
differential settlements for a rigid reinforced concrete mat foundation will be
much smaller than the allowed values or negligible. The actual value of
settlement is expected to be lower than the calculated value, and it will occur
mainly during the constrution period of the reinforced concrete structural system
of the building.
So it is assumed that the allowable soil pressures determined previously
will govern the design of the foundations .
7-4 Bearing capacity based on results of field standard

14 of 111

penetration tests : Nearly, all the results of SPT tests reached the value 39 for
the foundation layer, which match the above calculated value .
Case No.3: Strip foundations
We will calculate three models:
Strip1: B=1.5m
Strip2: B=2m
Strip3: B=3m
7-2 Bearing capacity considerations : The bearing capacity of the Second
layer for a Strip foundations is given by the following expression :
Qult=C*Nc+*D*Nq+*B*N
Where:
Nc , Nq and N are the bearing capacity factors which depend on the angle of
internal friction.
C is the consistency of the soil which we suppose to be equal to 0.4 Kg/cm2 .
is the unit weight of the soil and we consider a value of 1.98 ton/m3.

Df is the depth of embedment of the strip foundation below the surface of the
ground.
B is the breadth of the strip foundation of the structure.
this expression shows that the bearing capacity of a soil depends not only on its
engineering properties , but also on the shape and size of the footing , and on its
depth of embedment .
For an estimated average field value of internal friction angle we suppose
for the soil of foundation

Nc = 13.1

= 18o, the bearing capacity parameters are :

Nq = 5.3

N = 1.4

By substitution we find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil :

Qult1 = 4*13.1+1.98*1*5.8+1.98*1.5*1.4 = 67 t/m2
Qult2 = 4*13.1+1.98*1*5.8+1.98*2*1.4 = 68 t/m2

15 of 111

Qult3 = 4*13.1+1.98*1*5.8+1.98*3*1.4 =71 t/m2

By considering a factor of safety of 3, we find the allowable bearing
capacity as :
Pall1= 67/(3*10) = 2.2 kg/cm2
Pall2= 68/(3*10) = 2.3 kg/cm2
Pall3= 71/(3*10) = 2.4 kg/cm2
we take as an allowed bearing capacity the value of 2 kg/cm2. For the three
models.
A settlement value not exceeding the limit of 8 cm will be considered in
the elasticity range .
7-3 Settlement considerations : Based on the subsurface
conditions obtained from the test borings evaluation and analysis of the
laboratory tests , we believe that the lime clay is capable to support the strip
foundation of the structure without excessive settlement , and the most of the
estimated settlement is expected to be instantaneous and in the limits of allowed
values .
To compute settlements of a mat foundation we use an equation based on
the theory of elasticity :
2
S = qBIw(1 - )/E

where
S = calculated settlement in cm .
q = intensity of contact pressure .
B = breadth of the strip foundation in cm .

= Poison's ratio which equals for the soil 0.35 .

E = modulus of elasticity of soil, and from the result of plate load tests and SPT
we estimate that it equals approximately 300 kg/cm2

16 of 111

Iw = influence factor which equals for the strip foundation a value of 2.2.
Df = the depth of the foundation from the natural ground level not from the
recent ground level.
by substituting , we find :
S1 = (2-2*1.98/10) 150 2.2 (1-0.35 0.35)/300 = 1.5 cm
S2 = (2-2*1.98/10) 200 2.2 (1-0.35 0.35)/300 = 2 cm
S3 = (2-2*1.98/10) 300 2.2 (1-0.35 0.35)/300 = 3 cm
All the values are less than 8cm .ok
So it is assumed that the allowable soil pressures determined previously
will govern the design of the foundations .
7-4 Bearing capacity based on results of field standard
penetration tests : Nearly, all the results of SPT tests reached the value 39 for
the foundation layer, which match the above calculated value .
Case No.4: Piles
Where the load is too high and the settelment will be not allowable, we
can use reinforced concrete pile.
The following pages will introduce the design of a pile depending on
AllPile program , where we analysed a reinforced concrete pile:
Model 1: 12 m length and 90 cm diameter.

F.S. for skin = 2.0, for Weight = 1.0
Input Data:

During drilling operations of the boreholes, we contiued to observe the sides of
all boreholes, we found that it was standing vertically and no sides had collapsed
inside these boreholes; this ovbsrvation means that soil is cohesive. so no need
to use casing during drilling.

8 - CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

The field exploration program conducted on the site of building and the
laboratory tests performed on samples obtained have revealed that the
foundation soil is capable to support the building as follows :
8-1 The foundation soil: the first layer which is Gray cohesive to
stiff lime clay, or the second layer which is Yellowish Gray lime clay. But the
top soil or arable soil is not adequate for fundation and it must be removed
which were in Borehole No1 only with 60cm.
8-2 depth of foundations: The depth of foundation is 1 m at least
from the recent ground level.
8-3 Type of foundations:
8-4 The allowable bearing capacity of soil:
8-5 The total settlement:
8-6 The differential settlement

the soil of foundation is classified under symbol of Sc according to the Syrian
code. Appendix No.2 table No.3-2.
8-8 Chemical analysis: From our experience of the soil in the area,
so It is need to use sulphate resistant cement to protect reinforced concrete ,
foundations, from the influence of sulphates of soil.
8-9 water influence : Due to the foundation soil sensitivity to the
water, we recommend taking care of water piplines isolation of the building ,in
order to prevent water to reach the foundation soil, and in the case of water table
is reach the foundation soil, drainage procedures must be taken.
8-10 Limitations: The recommendations of this report are based
upon the assumptions that the soil conditions do not deviate from those
disclosed in the test borings. If any variations or undesirable conditions are
encountered during construction, or if the proposed construction will differ from
