Selma is a historial drama, that was released at the end of
2014 and was directed by Ava du Vernay. The main actor of
the movie is David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. The film is an amazing performance of a part of Martin Luther Kings life. It is heartbreaking, but at the same time is inspiring and poignant. The topic of the film is Martin Luthers King movement for racial equality. The triggering events of the movement are the murder of 4 black girls inside a church and the denial to register to vote of a woman in Selma, Alabama. At the beginning Martin Luther King decides to talk to the US President and requests him to approve the right to vote for black people. However the president denies the approval of voting rights because he believes it is not an important issue. As a response to this, Martin Luther King decides to go to Selma with other activists and begins a movement for black people voting rights. When he arrives, he encourages Selmas people to protest peacefully. During the first protests the police attacts the marchers with weapons and gas. This is recorded by the television and is shown in the news. Many U.S citizens feel moved and decide to travel to Selma to support the movement. Luther organizes a second march to go from Selma to Motgomery. This time the state troopers dont attack the protesters. However before arriving to Montgomery Luther has a strange feeling and decides that it is better to go back to Selma. After that Martn Luther King takes the violation of civil rights to black people to a court and asks for permission to do a legal march from Selma to Montgomery. The judge grants him this permission to march. After that the US president makes a public speech accepting voting rights for afroamerican. The film ends up with thousands of people marching from Selma to Montgomery and with a speech of Martin Luther King. The acting of all the actors was impressive. Even the supporting actors had an outstanding performance. David Oyeloyo does a brilliant representation of M. L. King. I felt
really moved specially during M. L. King speeches and his
acting really involved me in the drama of the afro americans at that time. The prupose of the film is not to show amazing special effects but rather represent historical events, so that they were poignant. The customs and scenography of the movie are coherent with the time, in which the social movement as developed. It is clear that the theme of the film is the black american struggle against racial injustice. During the movie the afroamericans are looking forward to have voting rights, so that they can also choose their governors. The other important theme of the movie is M. L. King Jrs political and personal lif. The movie depicts M. L Kings human side. In brief, the movie is worth it, not only because of the topic but also because of the amazing performance of the actors. I recommend it specially for people interested in knowing more about american history.
