H-1 ENGINE SYSTEhl

The H- 1 Engine is a single start, constant-thrust, bipropelkant rocket

engine that develops 890,000 N (200,000 lbf) of thrust at s e a level. The p r o pellant; lox and R P - 1 fuel, is supplied to the thrust chamber by a turbopump,
A gas generator, burning the same propellant as the thrust chamber, p o w e r s
the turbopump. The eight engines used on the S-IB s t a g e consist of four m o d e l
The outH-IC engines (inboard) and four model H-ID engines(outboard)
board engines d i f f e r from the i n b o a r d engines in that they are equipped with
a hydraulic system for vehicle s t e e r i n g and a t t i t u d e control.

A detailed functional description of the H-1 engine s y s t e m supported by

LIQUID PROPELLANT GAS GENERATOR CONTROL VALVE, P A R T NO. 308710

The liquid propellant gas generator (LPGG) control valve ( ~ 2 3 )controls

the flow of propellant ( R P - l fuel and lox) t o the LPGG combustion chamber
( ~ 2 2 ) The LPGG control valve is opened by pre ssure sensed at the thrust
chamber fuel injector manifold. This pressure opens the L P G G control valve
fuel and lox poppets, allowing the bootstrap propellant to flow through the
LPGC injector and into the combustion chamber. During engine shutdown,
fuel i n j e c t o r manifold pressure decays a n d the fuel and lox poppets are closed
by internal spring ?re s sure, ( s e e figure I2-5 f o r installation view. )

The unitized check valve ( ~ 2 4 ) consists of a lax dome purge check

valve

G N z flows through the lox dome purge check valve and into the l o x dome to
prevent contaminants from entering the thrust chamber nozzle and flowing to
the injector plate and the lox dome. The GNZ also prevents moisture f r o m condensing in the lox dome, The check valve i s closed by lox p r e s s u r e buildup in
the lox dome. The check valve stops the purge and prevents the backflow of l o x

The igniter fuel valve (346) is a spring-loaded normally closed valve that
is opened by a cam located on the main lox valve ( ~ 4 9 )gate shaft. During
engine start, the igniter f u e l valve leaves the closed p o s i t i o n when the main lox
valve is approximately 1 - 0 4rad (60 d) open and r e a c h e s the full-open position
when the main l o x valve is approximately 1.4 r a d ( 8 0 d) open. The i g n i t e r
fuel valve remains open, permitting high pressure fuel to flow to the unitized
injector and hypergol cartridge ( ~ 3 6 ) and the ignition monitor valve (B 38)
for -in fuel valve ( 8 3 9 ) actuation. During engine shutdown, as the main fox
