BMW puts pleasure back into motoring

Th e Motor Industry will

have to spend vast sums on
research in order to provide
the public with vehicles of
greater power reserves.
Many difficult situations
are encountered where reserves of power
could preventan accident."
11

So said Dr. Gerhard Munsch,

Head of the Psychological Medicine Research Department
of the Bavarian Technical Control Society,
on the occasion of the
first showing of his film .,Defensive Driving"
at the IVA Munich on 25th June, 1965.

1'he most striking result of the rapid growth of our traffic is the phenomenon of the nose-to-tail formation; where once
you could adjust your manner of driving wholly in accordance with road conditions, you are now suddenly forced to
adapt yourself to the (often completely unsuitable) restraint of an
under-powered car or an indecisive man in front. The closely following traffic cuts off your escape to the rear - usually

it is not possible to keep at the correct distance necessary for safety. The only way out is forward. But this possibility also
disappears when the power reserves of your car are insufficient to take advantage of the gaps in the oncoming traffic.
With the BMW 2000 a maximum power reserve is provided, to allow you to free yourself from the jams quickly and to
leave behind the tricky situations of the nose-to-tail driving.

The fundamental principle

applied to the construction of each
BMW car is that the Performance
is directly related to the
component parts used in its manufacture.
Nothing is gained merely
by incorporating a new engine in
a current model or by increasing
the engine size.
On the BMW 2000 the squish
combustion chamber was further
developed to the hemispherical
type and the main bearing
crankshaft was improved by eight
counterbalance weights. The front
gear suspension and the rear
axle have been redesigned in relation to the new engine. The
braking system/ with its larger discs
and increased servo performance
is equally matched to improved
engine performance.
Whether you favour the manual
four-speed gear box of the
ZF Automatic/ you can only make a
final decision after a test drive in
the BMW 2000 Automatic.
If you still favour the manual gear
change/ then you should choose the
BMW 2000.
.
If on the other hand you feel it is
more pleasant and more
advanced to achieve the same result
with considerably less effort/
then the 2000 Automatic is the-car
for you.

The interior fittings of the

BMW 2000 retain the BMW
principle of everything at
its best.
Where road safety is concerned/ the pi~t1:1re is one of
uncomprom1s1ng
serviceability. (Seats which
can be adjusted to many
positions. Steering wheel/
gear lever and handbrake
within easy reach. Automatic
windscreen washers/
dazzlefree and easily read
instruments/ etc.)

On the other hand/ on the

side of sheer comfort/ there
is a feeling
of grand opulence (4 doors/
5 seats/ about
21 cubic feet of luggage
space/ reclining seats/ etc.)

The basic idea of the car as a whole, is closely akin to the name BMW. In the thirties BMW engineers created the
legendary BMW Type 328, a car that achieved a position midway between the conventional family car on the one hand
and the highly specialised racing car on the other.

Due to the influence of modern, technical and psychological aspects of traffic conditions, a long term view of design
principles were evolved culminating in the present range of BMW cars. Within the BMW range of cars, each new model
is given a distinctive appearance - from the economical family car to the luxury coupe.

In the fundamental characteristics of all models

of the new range, you will
now find complete harmony
in a single car.
This new car which is making
its debut in BMW's
Golden Jubilee year, is the
BMW 2000.
