3 Disc brakes for con1plete safety.
Here again, Citroen led the way,
10 years ago, being the first
manufacturer to fit disc brakes
to a car as standard equip1nent.
On the DS they are hydraulically
power operated. The braking action
is automatica/1:)1 balanced accordin,g
to the loading on front and rear wheels.
Also the DS has t1vo independent
braking circuits which represent
a double safety factor.
4 Styled for grace and elegance.
A real masterpiece qf aerodyna1nic
des~gn, the DS co1nbines technical
requirement with beauty offorJJt.
The "functional" shape, originated
fro1n the engineer's 1JJorking drawing,
has been praised by stylists the 1vorld
over, and 1vas im1nediately accepted
in the field of living conte;nporary
forJJts as the most modern e."<:pression
of beattty. Shaped to cleave through
the air, it gives, even 1vhen stationary,
the impression qf speed frozen
at an instant of ti1ne. Proven
by 1 o years of experience,
constantly improved, having satisfied
hundreds of thousands of users for
millions of JJtiles, the DS is a
revolutionary JJtotor car and has
the reassuring steadiness of 1naturity.

The DS : a drawing room on wheels.

Exceptional interior space :

The interior dimensions qf the DS
provide a1nple room for five people.
A co1npletely flat floor is 1nade
possible by the front wheel drive.
Also, with the long JJJheelbase,
the distance bet1veen the front
tJnd back seats is greater than in
vtost modern cars. One can stretch

ones legs in the back as 1vell

as in the front.
Soundproofing : This has been
carefu/1:)1 studied in every detail,
and finished off with a deep pile carpet
backed Jvith latex foa1n; it helps
to keep the car quiet. There is no
n1ore noise at 100 1nph than there
is at 60 1nph.
Luxurious interior : The iJJtpeccable
finish of the interior as a whole
is scrupulous(y maintained do1vn
to the s1nallest detail: cigat fighter,
electric clock, soft interior lighting.
There are pockets in the front doors.
Also readily to hand, there is
a map st01vage pocket beneath
the dashboard.
"Armchair" seats : Carefully
designed to give anato1nicaf support
in all driving conditions, they are
available in a large range of colours.
I~ith foa1n padded cushions, the_,v are
more cotnfortable than the best
art11chairs and they can be converted,
in secondr, to bunk beds. There
is also a Jo/ding centre ar1nrest
at the rear.
Heating and ventilating : Fresh
air ventilation and heating can be
blended and directed to give any
desired conditions, even 1vhen
the car is stationary, by 1neans
of an electric bfo111er motor.
Side window de-misting : on each
side of the Jvindscreell there is
a special duct for de-111isling the
side windows. riot air may be
directed do1vn1vards ( to1vards the legs
and feet of the occtpants) or i1p1vards
(jor de-tnisting or de-frosting)
or both.
Individual heating- Ventilation
louvres : At each end of the
dashboard there are louvres throu,r1,h

1Phich fresh air is ducted from

the .front of the car. By operating
small levers, the flow of air from
these louvres can be controlled a11d
directed towards the heads or legs
qf the passengers (or both). It is
therefore possible to have both heating
and ventilation when travelling.
Any desired conditions of heat or
ventilation can be selected instantly

positioned for immediate action.

Even in the basic construction
of the car there is an optimum
of safety : the 111etal framework
1vhich supports the various body
components is welded to a rigid
girder chassis designed according
to the principle of "greater strength
from hollo1v members", which is
used in aircraft construction.
The shape qf the front bumper,
the rubber buffers, the spare wheel
in front of the engine, the front
mounted engine all constitute so many
successive shock absorbers in the
event of collision. F11rther safety
features are to be found inside the car :
a single spoke steering Jvheel to
minimize ir!Jury to the driver
by the steering column, a reflection
free padded instrument panel with
lighting rheostat and many other
parts padded for protection.
Other features include :
A two position rear view mirror :
anti-dazzle for night driving.
Safety locks on the doors :
the interior door handles have a simple
but effective safety catch which tnust
be operated before the door can be
opened. Also, safety harnesses may

be fitted as optional equipment.

Details which make all the difference.
Simplification of fittings :
The rear wing is secured by a single
bolt, each door is held by only two nuts.
Twin windscreen 1vashers and parallel
s1veep two speed wipers.
5-position height adjustment :
enables the driver to raise the car,
as desired, for driving over rough,
muddy or flooded ground or to
facilitate moving off on snotv covered
roads. Also it greatly simplifies
1vheel changing.
Luggage space : a boot with
a fully utilizable capacity of
I 7 I/ 2 cu.ft. With flat rectangular
sides, it can be.fully loaded with
normal suitcases and it is deep
enough for them to be packed
upright (the lid is counterbalanced
and the boot light comes on 1vhen
it is opened) .
The DS Pallas.
This is the DS in the superlative;
everything about it is more luxurious,
more refined. Car~fully selected
new materialr take the place of those
used on the normal production line.
Citroen has achieved the impossible
in its quest for perfection.

The Motorway Car

The still, quiet, safe, aerodynamic

world of a Citroen OS isn't like that of
any other car. It's more like your favourite
armchair.
It's unique Hydropneumatic
suspension smooths out every bump in
every road, whatever the load.
And advanced aerodynamics make the
OS go like the wind. Into the wind.
The miles dissolve. Your tensions fade,
as you and your passengers relax in
cushioned luxury.
Forget others on the road. The Citroen
OS is far removed from its lesser rival , the
ordinary motor car.

DS-The Open Road

Car
When you open up the OS on the open
road you seem to float away from the
crowd.
The complete absence of movement or
noise amazes you. The wrap-around,
infinitely-adjustable seats cocoon you in
utter comfort. And deep pile carpet with
foam underlay emphasises the sensation
that you are driving a luxury pad on
wheels instead of a car.
You feel very safe inside your citroen
OS - and you are very safe.
No-one is more safety-conscious than
Citroen. The padded steering wheel has
only one spoke, like the one f itted to th e
SM Citroen Maserati and G S. Deep
padding also covers the dashboard, and
even the switches are collapsible.

The Rough Road Car

The OS makes you think all the roads
have just been re-surfaced. The legendary
suspension ignores dips, pot-holes, and
the kind of terrain that would stop lesser
cars in thei r tracks.
Super efficient cushions of gas and oil
re place the traditional metal springs, and
each wheel has its own shock absorber
sphere to absorb the bumps so you don't.
Automatic height control front and
rear, keeps the car at a constant height
whatever the load.
Each wheel is independent, enabling
the OS to absorb every fault in the road
while maintain ing complete stability.
Road shocks are transmitted by a fluid to
the gas, wh ich absorbs them.
The ground clearance can be adjusted
manually by the driver from within the car.
So the OS takes in its stride cart tracks and
places where you wouldn't attempt to
drive another car. The clearance
variation also enables you to change a
wheel with no strain on your back.

. ..

The Mountain Car

No longer is driving in the mountains
the hair-raising business it used to be.
Exceptional braking, cornering and roadholding make the OS as sure footed as a
mountain goat. It has proven it through the
toughest of rallys, marathons, etc.
Furthermore, all mechanical parts have
been grouped in front to increase the grip
of the wheels that both drive and steer the
car.
This is the front-wheel drive
technique refined to the highest degree of
perfection by Citroen engineers.
The power of the engine; the
suppleness of the suspension , the
efficiency of the braking system everything reassures you that the Citroen
DS is to be trusted even when road
cond itions aren 't.
The unique swivell ing driving lights
(optional only avai lable with power
steering on D Special, D Super, Safaris
and DS20/21 finish), turn round
corners before you do. So driving at night
is like driving in the light.
The DS automatically corrects the aim
of the headlights under braking or
acceleration.
The DS is at home in the mountains as
it is on the open road. And so are you.

The Rain Car

When other cars slip and slide, the
Citroen OS glues itself to the road. The
high pressure brakes have a double circuit
to double your safety, and are power
operated to eliminate any effort on the part
of the driver. Automatic compensation for
variations of load is provided, reducing
the likelihood of rear wheel locking. Discs
at the front are inboard-mounted, and
ventilated by special ducts for improved
cooling .
The interior heating and ventilation
minimises condensation -a big safety
contribution. The heated rear window
(optional on the 'O' Special, 'O' Super,
Safaris and DS20/21 f inish)
prevents ice and f rost from marring your
vision. Rear visibility remains optimum
under all cond itions.
Power steering (optional on the
'D' Special, 'D' Super and Safaris) is
insensitive to surface faults, and even on
wet roads the handling of the OS remains
irreproachable due to the directional
stability being constant.

II.

The After Dark Car

Housed in their handsome casements
the four articulated headlamps of the OS
aren't merely artistic -they're functional.
They probe into the darkness, seeking out
the dangers of the night.
The auxiliary lights (optional on the
'O' Special, 'O' Su per, Safaris and
DS20/21 finish) turn with the
front wheels, and the beam of the main
lights adapts to clearance variation,
controlled by an automatic correcting
device.
The tachometer, speedometer and
warning panel are all protected by
anti-reflective glass.
Eleven light signals give you the pulse
of the car at any given moment. One glance
is sufficient to reassu re you that al I vital
parts are functioning perfectly.
Blue - Main beam control signal.
Red
- Hydraulic brake pressure, engine
oil pressure, and water

No othe r ca r in this price range- or any

price range - can boast al I the features of the
OS. Advanced Citroen design and
engineering techniques make it tru ly unique
and revolutionary.
Technical achievement reaches new
heights of performance and safety for
drivers and passengers al ike. It is no
coincidence that the Electronic Fuel
Injection OS 21 was awarded the 'Safety

Prize' by the French Automobile Press

Association.
ESTATE CAR - THE SAFARI
The Estate Car gives an incredible
amount of usable space . The effective
capacity in the rear, made up of flat surfaces,
is no less than 71 cubic feet. And as if that
were not enough, there is the built-in roof
rack.

The estate version has the san1e

horsepower (20 or 21 engine with carburettor),
the same comfort and the same impeccable
roadholding as its brother, the DS.
THE ELECTROPHORESIS
This is a process with which body parts,
visible and hidden, can be covered with a
coat of protective paint before the application
of priming and finish . The bodywork of the
OS is effectively protected against corrosion.

THE AERODYNAMICS
Once rnore this year, Citroen wanted to
improve the air penetration-coefficient (Cx) of
the OS, already exceptional for a massproduction car. The door handles are now
flush fitting.
COMFORT
All the OS's starting f ron1 the 'O' Super
now have two reversing lights. The glove
compartrnent, the heating control, the

cigarette lighter, the ashtray and the antitheft lock are equipped 'Nith a lighting unit.
PADDED STEERING WHEEL
The alreadv farnous safety original, the single
spoke steering wheel is now covered with a
foan1 rubber padding for n1ore driving
pleasure.
HORSEPOWER
Various in1provements have uprated the
'D' Special to89 bhp DIN <a 5500 rpm; 98 bhp

SAE ra 5750 rpm (102 mph approximately)

and the 'D' Su per, DS20 and Safari 20 to 99
bhp DIN ra 5500 rpm; 108 bhp SAE(<~ 5750
rpm (105 rnph approximately).
TYRES
For your safety, al l the OS's are now
fitted w ith lyre-wear indication lines. They
are indeed Michelin Radial t yres and there
is no better equipment for all weather and
road conditions.
