Safety
I

The 505 has been designed with special attention to safety.

It incorporates numerous active and passive features which are derived
directly from the Peugeot Safety Synthesis vehicle. The result is a car
which is not only modem, stylish and built to an advanced level of
engineering, but one which utilises the most up to date techniques to
ensure that driver and passengers alike can enjoy maximum
protection and safety.
The mpst important ele1nent is the passenger compartment,
which must be strong enough to resist a major impact from any angle.
This strength comes from the design of the structural components;
their material strength and assembly.
A rigid 'cage' has been constructed around the passenger
compartment. All possible angles of impact have been considered In
the event of a head-on collision, for example, the reinforced doors are
strong enough to retain their shape, despite the massive force that
would be exerted upon them. The box sections in front and behind
this safety cage (engine compartment and boot) form progressively
collapsible zones which absorb impact before it reaches the passenger
compartment.
Safety has been a prime consideration in the design of every part
of the 505. The attention to detail isshown by features such as the fully
padded steering wheel and fascia, the self-illuminating push-button
controls and the recessed, anti-burst door locks. The deep windows
and excellent all round visibility, together with the heated rear screen,
help the driver to cope with the worst traffic and weather conditions.
Other items of standard equipment, such as front disc brakes
(front and rear on ST!), servo power assistance and dual circuits,
laminated windscreen, halogen headlamps and impact absorbing
bumpers all play their role in helping to ensure that you arrive at your
destination safely; time after time.

The Mechanical Features

THE PETROL AND DIESEL ENGINES
Like all Peugeot engines, they have power: durability,
quietness and balance. The petrol engine is one ofthe
best ofits kind, giving you an opportunity to sample
motoring that is both sophisticated and economical. It
is capable ofover 38 mpg at a constant 56 mph in the
GL and GR 4-speed estates, and over 40 mpg in the
5-speed family- a truly incredible achievement in an
estate ofsuch a size.
The diesel engine is, ofcourse, even more
economical and can manage over 44 mpg at a
constant 56 mph. A special pre-heating plug enables
the engine to start in the coldest temperatures in just
7 seconds.
THE GEARBOX
The 4- and 5-speed gearboxes give excellent

18

smoothness and versatility. The gear ratios were

calculated to give the best possible combination
between performance and fuel consumption, with the
ftfth gear on the GRD and family models making a
significant saving here. At the same time, the ft~h gear
means that the engine revs are kept down for quiet
and smooth cruising.
THE POWER ASSISTED STEERING
This gives you more comfort for less effort. Although
it's not noticeable when driving fast or in a straight line,
it's a great help on winding roads or when parking.
DIAGNOSTIC SOCKET (Petrol engines only) This
allows the ignition system to be connected to a
dealership's electronic test equipment. so that any
fault can be located immediately without the need for
time-consuming dismantling.

--

Active and Passive Safety Featu res

ACTIVE SAFETY FEATURES
These concern everything involved in controlling the
vehicle.
There is independent coil-spring suspension at
the front with telescopic hydraulic shock-absorbers
and an anti-roll bar
The rear has a coiled-spring suspension with
anti-roll bar (except on the GL) and telescopic
hydraulic shock-absorbers.
The brakes are dual circuit and servo-assisted
with discs at the front and drums at the rear The
brakes are automatically adjusted each time they are
applied, resulting in maximum effectiveness.
Finally, there's both a brake ruid loss warning light
and a brake pad wear warning light on the fascia.

PASSIVE SAFETY FEATURES

This consists ofall the features that would lessen the
impact in the event ofan accident.
The front and rear sections ofthe estate ore
designed to crumple and thus absorb the impact ofa
crash. This means that the passengers all sit in a safety
cage in the centre. The steering column is collapsible
and the dashboard and fascia are podded, so there
are no hard and dangerous protrusions.
The exceptionally large window area gives the
driver a panoramic view. and headlamp adjustment
and the rear demister mean that he con make the
best use of it in all weathers. Rear fog lamps ensure
that the vehicle is visible to other rood users in
inclement weather

18

The SixYear Anti-Corrosion'( :uarantee

All Peugeots have a 6-year anti-corrosion guarantee.
Each new Peugeot is carefully treated against
corrosion by being totally immersed in a cataphoretic
tank, a process that makes the bodywork particularly
resistant to corrosion.
But Peugeot don't just make use ofthis

technological innovation on its own- they use all the

guaranteed by more than just words.

The 6-year anti-corrosion guarantee covers
repair to any part ofthe bodywork or underside
that has suffered corrosion from the inside, causing
the metal to be perforated.
To take advantage of the guarantee, two simple
service checks are required to be carried out on the
vehicle (lasting two hours approximately and at the
expense ofthe customer; at the end of the second

and fourth years of use). The inspections must be

carried out by a recognised Peugeot dealer.
The Peugeot 6-year anti-corrosion guarantee is
transferable in the event of a change in ownership,
and is limited to vehicles used in the following
European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark,
Finland, France, Great Britain, Holland, Ireland, Italy.
Luxembourg, Norway. Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, West Germany.

THE UNMISTAKABLE LOOK OF THE TRUE

THOROUGHBRED
Pininfarina gave the Peugeot 505 its classic styling. In an age
where sheer clinical efficiency does so much to dictate shape, the
505 achieves a perfect balance between function and aesthetics.
Its flowing lines endow it with speed but extreme economy with sleek looks but supreme spaciousness - with performance
but ultra-quiet comfort.
The Peugeot 505 range offers a choice ofseven models within
three different and very clearly defined trim lines. The GR is

available with both petrol and diesel engines and the SR is also
offered with a turbo-charged diesel. A three-speed automatic
gearbox is offered at extra cost on SR and ST/ models.
The 505 handles like a sports car, rides like a limousine, easily
accommodates five full-size adults and provides over 18 cu. ft. of
luggage space in a very practical shaped boot.
Its pedigree is unimpeachable.

THE STYLISH WAY TO TRAVEL

For journeys ofany length the 505 is motoring at its delightful
best. Inside there is an atmosphere oflush tranquillity, 1nasking
reserves of power and responsiveness.
The 505 interior is easy on the eyes, too. The hard wearing yet
comfortable upholstery, thick pile carpeting, doors, roof
and fascia !rim all combine in one harmonious scheme.
There are headrestraints for the driver and front passenger.
The centre console houses the push button radio or radio stereo
cassette, depending on model. There are door bins in the front as
well as elasticated pockets in 1he back ofthe fronl seats. There.is

room 10 spare - room to stretch 1he legs in the front or rear seats,

and elbow room as well.

For the driver the Peugeot-designed power assisted steering
provides effortless control and yet maintains that essential feeling
ofdirect contaCI with the road. The manual gearboxes are as slick
as you'll find, and the servo-assisted brakes bring the pace down
just as smoothly as a touch ofthe accelerator takes you up to your
cruising speed. For night driving the powerful halogen
headlamps are adjustable by a fascia control.

For driver and passengers the environment is one of

unostentatious luxury. Generous soundproofing and carefully
engineered insulation have reduced all engine noise and other
vibrations to an absolute minimum. All round independent
suspension - of Peugeot's renowned own design - irons out
road irregularities and the seats themselves would be a credit to
many a graceful drawing room. Specially contoured, they offer
firm back support bul relaxed posture for comfortable travel.
In the 505, to travel is to enjoy life.

505 GR/GRD

NOTE
Black Paint is available as an option on the GR / GR D
models.

The 505 GR saloon has a 95 bhp petrol engine of J Y / I cc,

coupled with a 4-speed manual gearbox. The 2498 cc diesel
engine in the GRD develops 75 bhp and has 5-speed
transmission, returning up to 47 mpg at a constant 56 mph.
Standard equipment on the GR/GRD includes a laminated
windscreen, inertia reel safety belts and headrestraints for the
front seats, cloth upholstery, a digital clock, lockable glovebox
with lamp, and a fully folding centre armrest for the rear seat. The
instrument panel on the petrol engined GR incorporates an

econoscope - a vu1u ble aid to the thoughtful driver. A constant

light display indicates when fuel is being used most efficiently.
Both petrol and diesel engined models have a low fuel level
warning light - particularly useful on the diesel -and a panel light
rheostat. A typical Peugeot touch is the lamp for the ignition
keyhole.
In-car entertainment on the GR/GRD is a push-buuon radio
with twin speakers.

'

505 SR
The SR version of the Peugeot 505 conveys an
instant impression ofadded refinement, with the choice
of a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic
transmission to accompany the 1971cc95 bhp engine.
Th e advanced specification introduces tinted glass all
round, plus an electric sunroof; electric front windows,
and central locking ofall four doors and the fuel filler
flap.

The interior is strikingly fitted with I 00% tweed upholstery,

and instrumentation includes an electronic rev. counter. A stereo
cassette player unit complements the radio.
Exterior bodyside mouldings and new style full wheel covers
are standard, and metallic or black paint finish is an optional
extra.

505 STI
The Peugeot 505 ST/ combines luxury with performanceplus. With its fuel-injection I 08 bhp all-alloy engine of 1995 cc,
electronic ignition and the standard 5-speed manual gearbox,
this large, executive saloon can reach 62 mph from a standing
start in around I 0.8 seconds.
To m atch its increased performance the ST/ is equipped with a
limited-slip differential for improved traction and greater safety
in wet or other treacherous conditions.

Fi ve alloy wheels are standard, fitted with low-profile TRX

tyres, and braking is by an all-disc system.
Luxury features additional on the ST/ include velour
upholstery, a stereo radio/stereo cassette unit and metallic or
black paint - all part of the standard specification.
So well equipped is the Peugeot 505 ST! that the only option is
3-speed automatic transmission.

II

505 SRD TURBO

The Peugeot 505 SRD Turbo brings a completely new
dimension to diesel power in luxury saloon cars. No concessions
to noise, vibration or lack-lustre performance, but a smooth and
silent surge of power, still with all the economy to be expected
from a diesel with a 5-speed gearbox. The turbo charger, driven
at I 00,000 rpm by the exhaust gases, boosts the 2304 cc engine to
79 bhp, but more important generates a maximum torque of 136
lb ft at 2000 rprn. The result is 62 mph from a standing start in
around 16.8 seconds, the kind of acceleration that many petrol
driven large cars would be hard pressed to match. And al! the

time the ability to return more than 47 mpg at a constant 56 mph.

The specification includes the power-assisted steering, a
limited-slip differential to put the turbo power down on the
ground when it's most needed, an electric sunroof, electric front
windows, tinted glass, central door and fuel filler flap locking,
ultra smart tweed trim and a radio/stereo cassette unit with twin
speakers.
As on the petrol-engined SR saloon, bodyside mouldings and
full wheel covers are standard and metallic or black paint finish is
an optional extra on the new Peugeot SRD Turbo.

ACTI VE AND PASSI VE SAFETY

ACTIVE SAFETY

Safety, both active and passive, is a key requirement in the

original design of all Peugeot models.

A ctive safety is best described as those elements in the vehicle

design which help you avoid being involved in an accident,
whereas passive safety is the protection you enjoy within the
driving compartment.
The 505 range benefits from independent front suspension
with coil springs and double acting telescopic hydraulic shock
absorbers with an anti-roll bar. Coil springs and telescopic
shock absorbers are also used on the rear. The suspension has
been finely tuned to guarantee excellent roadholding.
The braking system is equally sophisticated for maximum

PASSIVE SAFETY

stopping power. It is a servo-assisted split circuit system with

discs on the front and drums on the rear on all models except
the ST/ which has rear disc brakes. A rear brake compensator
valve on all models ensures automatic adjustment ofpressure
applied to rear brakes, thus preventing premature wheel
locking. There is even a warning light on the fascia which fights
up to indicate low brake fluid level or brake pad wear, as well
as a separate handbrake warning light.
These engineering features contribute to your safety.

Passive safety is that which minimises the consequences of

an accident in which you may be involved. On the 505 range
the front and rear ends ofthe body shell are designed to absorb
impact through progressive deformation of the structure, with
maximum protection of the passenger compartment.
Another aspect is the two spoke safety steering wheel which
is mounted on a collapsible energy-absorbing steering column.
Finally, interior appointments are designed in such a way as
to eradicate all sharp edges on the fascia panel.
Safety is a key feature.

PEUGEar 505. Kondition fiir lange Strecken.

So verhindern
sog. Silent-8/ocke die Ubertragung von Vibration und Liirm
von der Radaujhiingung zur Karosserie. Fazit: Im 505 horen

Stahlschiebedach.
Das Komfort-Angebot im PEUGEOT505 wird e1ganz1 durch
Einzelruhesitze vorn, Teppichboden, Gri./farmlehnen,
Ablagefiicher in den vorderen Tiiren, geraumiges,

PEUGEaf 505 CL/GLD.

enorm.

fm 505 GLD arbeitet ein ebenso kultiviertes und

fortschrittliches Diesel-Aggregat : 2498 ccm, 55 kW
(75 DIN PS) mit dem materialschonenden 5-Gang-Getriebe
serienma}Jig.

getonte Scheiben, e/eklrische Fensterheber vorne, elektrisches

PEUGE& 505 STL

lmSpitzenmode/I der 5er-Klasse von PEUGEOT stehr Ihnen
ein Einspritz-Triebwerk zur Vetfiigung, dessen Laujkultu1;
Sparsamkeit und Zuverliissigkeit auch im strapaziosen
Dauereinsatz bestechen.

S05 STI-Triebwerk a!s !eistungsstarke Syn these.

Travel in Style
Since its Launch in Spring 1982 the Peugeot 5 05 estate car has
been accepted as being one of the most modern and practical
large family estate cars on the market today. Its classic
aerodynamic lines reflect standards of comfort and
p racticability which are unmatched by its competitors. Not only
will it seat five or, alternatively, eight in the Family versions, h11t
it will carry an enormous amount in its vast load area.
The 1983 505 range offers you a selection of five diffir<111

f)l'trol n11tl ( ,'U [) and Family diesel derivatives. A I speed

automatic gearbox is available as an option at extra cost on the

petrol-engined GR and Family models.
All versions, except the G L, are fitted with power-assisted
steering so that, even when fully loaded, steering effort is
minimal with a high degree of manoeuvrability. Th e braking
system is equally sophisticated being a split circuit with discs at
the front, drums at the rear and servo-assistance to ensure

optimum braking power when under full load.

Peugeot's reputation for strength and ruggedness is partly
founded on the suitability of its suspension system and the
505 Estate reinforces this image. The front suspension is
independent with coil springs, double acting telescopic shock
absorbers and an anti-roll bar. The live rear axle also has coil
springs and telescopic shock absorbers .

Travel in Space
Unlike its main competition, the 505 Estate is not just a
stretched saloon. It was designed as an estate, as is evident. by the
fact that its 114" wheelbase is over 6" longer than its saloon
counterpart.
The counterbalanced fifth door opens up to reveal a massive
load compartment which on GL and GR versions provides a
load floor length ofover 91 "with the seats folded, and over 81"
on the Family models. The load floor width is 45.3" with a

ma;dmu.n1 height of 32.5". On the Family derivatives this results

in r1 lotl(/ area, with seats folded, of68.5 cu. ft. and on GL-GR
(5 seate1) n1odels an amazing 79. 0 cu. ft. By any standards, the
Peugeot 5 05 Estate has to be the most practical large estate on
the 1~11rop ea11 market.
Look at that low loading height and, m ost in1porta111.1/Je
absence of any lip. You don't need to 'lift' y our luggage and
stretch . Simply load it onto the load floor and push.

..

..

Travel in Com/ort
Versatility and adaptability are the real benefits ofthe Family
Estate. Versatility comes from its unique three rows of seats
design. Not only can the two rear rows be folded so as to offer a
load surface 81" long, but the middle row is split 2/3 - I /3,
each part of which can be folded independently.
You can effectively, therefore, carry any combination of
passengers between one and seven with corresponding
flexibility and ease.
.
Adaptability stems from your decision to use it for business

or pleasure. Business benefits (I re selfexplanato ry and for

pleasure you will not find such a luxurious package in the
market place.
Peugeot's reputation fo r stre11FJctlt , ruggedness and durability
is second to none. The 505 Fa1111fy !~state is the latest in a long
line of very successf11!, r111d pr<1ctic(/f, but sophisticated estate
cars for which Peugeot has beco111e renowned.
Th e 505 Estates warr(l11t a test drive to fully justify their
a/tributes.

SOSGL
The G L model is powered by the 1971 cc petrol engine which
produces 81 DIN bhp at 5000 rpm and 117 lb ft DIN torque at
2500 rpm. With a seating capacity for five people, plus over 39
cu.ft. ofload it achieves a maximum speedofup to 95 mph and
a fuel consumption of over 38 mpg at a constant 56 mph.
Although the workhorse ofthe range, the G L interior has not
been neglected and provides a very high standard of comfort

and appointment. The reclining jiont seats are trimmed in

cloth. In addition to individual warning lights there is a
centralised warning light for wc11er, oil, battery and brakes.
Th ere is a headl(llnp odjust111ent control within easy reach ofthe
driver and a host of otlter features, all designed for your
convenience and to add pleasure to your driving. A pushbu1ton radio witIt twin speakers is standard on the G L.

()

505 GR/GRD
The petrol engine on the GR model is a twin-choke
carburettor version ofthat in the GL and develops 95 DIN
bhp at 5200 rpm. Also available is a diesel-engined
version of the GR. Peugeot has established an enviable
reputation worldwide for its diesel engine design, and the
GRD certainly adds weight to that reputation in producing
75 DIN bhp and 111 lb ft DIN torque.

The diesel engine is coupled with a 5-speed box and

produces an amazing fuel consumption figure in excess of
44 mpg at a constant 56 mph.
The windscreen is laminated, all glass tinted, and the tailgate
~as a ~ash/wip~ mechanism. In total an excellent package,
including a radio/cassette player with twin speakers.
To help the thoughtful driver to achieve optimum fuel
economy the GR petrol-engined Estate is fitted with
econoscope lights.

505 GR/GRD
Internally the GR/GRD models are upholstered in tweed
cloth where the accent is very firmly on quality, comfort and
durability. Note particularly the cloth door inserts in the same
material adding that little extra touch of class.
Passenger comfort is equally as important as that of the
driver and in the Peugeot 505 estates this aspect has certainly
not been neglected.

The front passenger seat is contoured for

maximum comfort and rear seat passengers can relax with
optimum Leg room.
All controls are within fingertip reach ofthe driver and, most
importantly, all instruments and warning Lights are readily
visible with easy to read graphics.

505 Family Petrol/Diesel

In designing the 505 estate range, driver visibility was a key
requirement. You will very quickly notice the very large glass
areas (over 36 sq. ft.) with slim door pillars. Note particularly
the opening rear door. See how high the rear door opens; you
can easily load-up in bad weather and still be protected.
The great secret of the range and the family models in
particular is their absolute suitability to fulfil a dual purpose.

They are equally at home taking you to the office and when the
opportunity arises will transport your family in considerable
comfort into the peace and quiet of the countryside.
The power steering on the family models means that neither
you or your wife will have any trouble manoeuvring at low
speed or in congested traffic conditions.

15

505

505 Family Petrol/Diesel

Mechanically the petrol and diesel versions of the Family
Estate are almost identical to the GR and GRD models. The
petrol version is 1971 cc and the diesel 2498 cc but both have a
5-speed manual gearbox as standard. The Family is without
doubt the flagship of the range. With three rows of seats, all
forward facing, it can seat eight people in absolute comfort and
carry 21.9 cu. ft. of luggage or seat five people and sllll carry
over 42 cu. ft. of luggage.
It is ideal transport for the large family with or without a dog

and the versatility it provides is second to none.

Like the GR models the seats are trimmed in tweed cloth with
head restraints for the driver and front passenger. The centre
console unit houses the radio /cassette player and there are door
bins in the front as well as elasticated pockets in the back of the
front seats. The console also ducts warm air to the centre-row
footwells. The Family petrol version instrumentation includes
econoscope lights.

Active and Passive Safety

Safety, both active and passive, is a key requirement in the
original design of all Peugeot models.

ACTIVE SAFETY
Active safety is best described as those elements in the vehicle
design which help you avoid being involved in an accident,
whereas passive safety is the protection you enjoy within the
driving compartment.
Th e 505 Estates benefit from independent front suspension
with coil springs and double acting telescopic hydraulic shock
absorbers with an anti-roll bar. Coil springs and telescopic
shock absorbers are also used on the rear. The suspension has
been finely tuned to guarantee excellent roadholding.
The braking system is equally sophisticated for maximum

stopping power. It is a servo-assisted split circuit system with

discs on the front and drums on the rear. A rear brake
compensator valve on all models ensures automatic adjustment
of pressure applied to rear brakes, thus preventing premature
wheel locking. There is even a warning light on the fascia which
lights up to indicate low brake fluid level or brake pad wear, as
well as a separate handbrake warning light.
These engineering features contribute to your safety.

PASSIVE SAFETY
Passive safety is that which minimises the consequences ofan
accident in which you may be involved. On the 505 Estates the
front and rear ends of the body shell are designed to absorb
impact through progressive deformation of the structure, with
maximum protection of the passenger compartment.
Another aspect is the two spoke safety steering wheel which is
mounted on a collapsible energy-absorbing steering column.
Finally interior appointments are designed in such a way as to
eradicate all sharp edges on the fascia panel.
Safety is a key feature.

All these measures provide added proof- if indeed it was

necessary to demonstrate that Peugeot vehicles are efficiently
protected against the natural phenomenon of corrosion, and
thereby make the purchase of a Peugeot a good investment.
The warranty, which is against perforation ofthe bodywork as
a result of corrosion, is transferable to second or subsequent
owners and is granted in respect of vehicles registered and

Estate/fa1nily

505ST-YLE~--------"'---------Welcome to the beautifully practical world of the

Peugeot 505 Estate and Family. The Estate seats five while the
Family will comfortably seat eight - and carry all their luggage.
But this is no stretched saloon. Peugeot design estates
as estates with no compromises. Every inch is dedicated to
increasing their comfort and load versatility. The long 114"

wheelbase, 6" more than the 505 Saloon, makes for a very
smooth ride and ease of handling, even when fully loaded.
There are five models, petrol or diesel, Estate or Family.
One is exactly right for you. A lively asset to your business.
A very real enhancement of your lifestyle. Certainly the best
Estate and Family value on the road today. There's even plenty

Model illustrated: 505 GR Estate.

of room for the dog.

All models are fitted with a 5-speed gearb.ox, a new
feature on the 1985 GL and all except the GL have power
assisted steering as standard. The combination of front and
rear coil spring suspension, irons out.those irritating road
irregularities.

505 P-RACTICAL ESTATE- - - - - This is the real thing. The most adaptable large Estate
on the European market. Plenty of room to carry five people in
great comfort. Superb finish and the many luxury features
fitted as standard put this handsome car right at the top of
its class.
The huge counterbalanced rear door lifts and the rear
seats fold down to open up a load platform over 91" long,

'.1odtI' 11111,ti.ited 505 GR ~nd GL Estate

45.3" wide and a maximum height of 32.3". That adds up to

79 cu ft of usable loadspace.
With the low floor level and no awkward sill, you just
load your luggage onto the floor and push it in. No Estate has
ever made it easier for you to move people and luggage around
in such quiet cushioned comfort. Trust Peugeot to find a better
way to provide exactly what you want.

From the outside the Family looks deceptively like the

Estate - but there's a lot more inside. A third row of forward
facing seats means that eight people can all travel comfortably
together.
But that's not all. The inside space can be used in many
different ways. If you fold down the third row of seats you
increase the load area. The second row seats are split and can

be folded down one third, two thirds or all the way. So you can
vary the seating and the load capacity at will.
The 505 is the only Family to offer saloon car comfort
for up to eight people combined with quick and easy estate
conversion up to 67.8 cu ft of luggage space. With eight on
board there is still over 21.0 cu ft for all their luggage.
The load compartment width and height are the same

as the 505 Estate models and although the third row ot seats
results in a reduced maximum floor length, there still remains
an amazing 81.1''.
It makes you wonder how you managed until now.
Even fully loaded, Peugeot power makes light of every Family
outing.

ACTIVE AND
PASSIVE SAFETY
Safety, both active and passive, is a key requirement in
the original design of all Peugeot models.
ACTIVE SAFETY

Active safety is best described as those elements in the

vehicle design which help you avoid being involved in an
accident, whereas passive safety is the protection you enjoy
within the driving compartment.
The 505 Estates front suspension is independent with
coil springs and double acting telescopic hydraulic shock
absorbers with an anti-roll bar. Coil springs and telescopic
shock absorbers are also used on the rear. The suspension has
been finely tuned to guarantee excellent roadholding.
The braking system is equally sophisticated for maxi
mum stopping power. It is a servo-assisted split circuit system
with discs on the front and drums on the rear. A rear brake
compensator valve on all models ensures automatic adjustment.
of pressure applied to rear brakes, thus preventing premature
wheel locking. There is even a warning light on the fascia which
lights up to indicate low brake fluid level or brake pad wear,
as well as a separate handbrake warning light.
These engineering features contribute to your safety.
PASSIVE SAFETY

Passive safety is that which minimises the conse

quences of an accident in which you may be involved.
On the 505 Estates the front and rear ends of the body shell
are designed to absorb impact through progressive deforma
tion of the structure, with maximum protection of the passenger
compartment.
Another aspect is the two spoke safety steering wheel
which is mounted on a collapsible energy-absorbing steering
column.
Finally interior appointments are designed in such a way
as to eradicate all sharp edges on the fascia panel.
Safety is a key feature.

Strength, durability, quiet running and modest demands

on fuel are all features of Peugeot petrol and diesel engines.
Both power units have four cylinders and a five bearing crank
shaft with an aluminium alloy cylinder head.
The 1971 cc twin choke petrol engine in the GL, GR and
Family models develops 96 bhp PSDIN at 5200 rpm. Maximum

torque of 119 lb ft DIN at 3000 rpm makes a very responsive

engine that can achieve up to a remarkable 40 mpg when linked
with th'e 5-speed gearbox.
At a constant 75 mph up to 29.4 is the norm and in
simulated urban driving up to 24.8, an excellent return for a
large estate car that can carry eight people including the driver.

The 2498 cc diesel engine fitted to the GLD and Family

Diesel models produces 76 bhp PSDIN at 4500 rpm and 111 lb ft
DIN torque at 2000 rpm. The real strength of this diesel power
unit is in its excellent fuel economy, where at a constant speed
of 56 mph over 44 mpg can be achieved. Reliability, absence
of vibration, smooth and easy starting using special pre-heat

plugs, are all features of this remarkable Peugeot diesel.

Peugeot are undisputed leaders in the design and ma nu
facture of diesel engines. With over 50 years experience behind
them and over 2 million units produced it is not surprising
that Peugeot diesels have consistently been used as original
equipment in cars of other than Peugeot manufacture.

505 GLIGLD ESTATE

1971cc PETROL ENGINE
2498 cc DIESEL ENGINE
In the 1.985 GL Estate the 19.71 cc twin choke petrol
engine with 5-speed synchro gearbox develops 96 bhp PS-DIN.
It can achieve a maximum speed of around 100 mph.
Using the econoscope, a continuous light display on
the fascia, the careful driver can tell when he is using petrol
most effectively. The Gl can achieve up to 40 mpg at a
constant 56 mph.
The GLD version has the 76 bhp PS-DIN2498 cc diesel
that develops 111 lb ft torque at 2000 rpm. It has a 5-speed
synchro gearbox and power assisted steering. It is possible to
achieve up to 44.8 mpg at a cor:istant 56 mph.
Whether you choose petrol or diesel, there is nothing
basic about the GL/GLD. It can comfortably seat five people
and .still carry up to 39 cu ft of load. The seats are cloth
trimmed, front reclining. There is a cigar lighter, a glovebox and
a push button radio with twin speakers. The fascia has
comprehensive warning lights, instruments and a control for
adjusting the headlamps according to the load being carried.
Safety features include laminated windscreen with
2-speed electric wash/wipe, dual circuit servo assisted braking,
tailgate wash/wipe, heated rear window and rear foglamps
and reversing lamps.
The GUGLD gives you a big powerful estate for your
money.

2498cc DIESEL ENGINE

The GR has the same 96 bhp PS-DIN petrol engine as the

GL but the whole car is equipped to a higher level of luxury and
refinement.
Tinted glass all round. Electric front windows. There are
protective bodyside mouldings and full wheel covers.
Halogen headlamps and central locking of doors and fuel filler
flap. The seats are upholstered in tweed cloth and there's tufted
carpet right through to the load area.
In addition to the econoscope the fascia includes a rev
counter and a digital clock. There's a digital radio stereo
cassette with four speakers.
Extra details include an illuminated ignition keyhole,
courtesy lamps front and rear and a lamp in the glovebox.
The front doors have bins for maps and both driver and
passenger doors feature a remote control rear view mirror.
The luxuriously appointed Family takes on where the GR
Estate leaves off. No other car can offer the large family such
capacity and ready adaptability to their many needs.
Its three rows of tweed upholstered seats can seat up
to eight people in quiet cushioned comfort and still leave room
for 21.9 cu ft of luggage- or space for a large dog. To carry five
people the third row of seats is foldel'l down and the luggage
room increases to 42 cu ft.

The middle row of seats can be divided so that you can
fold down one or two thirds to accommodate long loads or put
a carrycot on the floor. The whole seat folds down to open access
to the maximum load capacity.
The centre console ducts warm air to the centre row
footwells. Peugeot suspension makes for a very smooth ride
and the power assisted steering makes even the fully loaded
Family easy to haridle under all conditions. Lavishly equipped,
the GR and Family models are a joy to drive. All three models
are available with black or metallic paint as an option at extra
cost. On the GR and Family petrol model a three speed auto
matic gearbox is also available at extra cost.
The Family petrol version has.the 96 bhp PS-DIN engine
and its instrumentation includes an econoscope. The 2498 cc
76 bhp PS-DIN diesel can achieve the remarkable economy of up

are thoroughly degreased to remove oil

deposited during the press operation and
to ensure full adhesion of the protective
finishes.
Corrosion resistant zinc or galvanised
plated panels are used invulnerable areas
or areas that would be difficult to protect
after assembly.
2.
PHOSPHATING: This gives
protection against impacts and flaking;
it also improves the adhesion of the resin
lilm in the cathodic bath. Some box
sections are cleaned and phosphated
before the body shell is assembled.

All Peugeot cars have the benefit of a six years' anti

corrosion warranty against perforation of all body and underbody panels and each unit is meticulously treated against
permanent spread of corrosion by total immersion in a
cataphoretic bath-a process which makes the body shell
particularly resistant to corrosion.
But Peugeot's answer to corrosion is not confined solely
to this technology innovation of anti-corrosive cataphoresis.
Used in addition are eight other processes which add up to
50 lbs of well established anti-corrosion coatings of proven
resistance value, and these are applied before and after the
cataphoretic bath.
To benefit from this warranty involves only two checks
of the car (taking about 2 hours depending on model, carried
out at the expense of the customer at the end of the second
and fourth years of service) at a Peugeot Talbot Dealer.
This 6 year anti-corrosion warranty is transferable on change
of ownership.
You thus have further proof, were it needed, that you
may regard the purchase of your Peugeot as a good investment.

3.
CATAPHORETIC BATH: This
deposits a corrosion-proofing epoxy film
15 to 20 microns thick on the whole body
shell. Box sections are pierced to assure
the protection of internal surfaces.

4.
JOINT SEALING: Sealing
between adjacent panels is assured by
mastic sealing strips on the inside and
outside.

5.
CRACKLE FINISR ANTICHIPPING COMPOUND (PVC): Oven
baked, this ensures protection to the
parts of the body that are subject to
abrasion from road chippings and stones
(the coat is I to 2 mm thick).

UNIQUE TRIPLE
COVER
In addition to the 6 year anti-corrosion warranty all
Peugeot cars described in this catalogue are covered by an
unlimited mileage warranty during the first twelve months
including both parts and labour, together with free breakdown
recovery, should it ever be needed. In addition, for the same
period there is the benefit of the unique Extra Care Policy,
providing free replacement of certain wearing parts, like brake
pads and clutches, if they require replacement as a result of
normal wear. The Extra Care Policy does not cover cars used
for Police and taxi work. Cars used for competitions are also
excluded from the benefits of the warranty and Extra Care Policy.
Your Peugeot Talbot Dealer will be pleased to explain
the terms and conditions of this unique triple cover.
As a Peugeot Owner you have the support of more than
500 Dealers in this country-and if you take your car abroad,
some 5,000 in Europe- all with special expertise gained from
factory training and aided by special tools and equipment to
ensure efficient and effective attention.
Naturally, your Dealer's efforts start before you see your
car. He carries out a careful check under our Road-Ready
programme to make sure your new car is as it should be.
All Peugeot Talbot Dealers in the United Kingdom are
bound by our Service Charter, designed to give you, the
Customer, a fair deal in all circumstances. Their knowledge and
skill are at your disposal-willingly and cheerfully.

ACTIVE AND
PASSIVE SAFETY
Safety, both active and passive, is a key requirement in
the original design of all Peugeot models.
ACTIVE SAFETY:

Active safety is best described as those elements in

the vehicle design which help you avoid being involved in an
accident, whereas passive safety is the protection you enjoy
within the driving compartment.
The 505 range benefits from independent front
suspension with coil springs and double acting telescopic
hydraulic shock absorbers with an anti-roll bar. Coil springs and
telescopic shock absorbers are also used on the rear.
The suspension has been finely tuned to guarantee excellent
road holding.
The braking system is equally sophisticated for
maximum stopping power. It is a servo-assisted split circuit
system with discs on the front and drums on the rear on all
models except the GTI which has rear disc brakes. A rear brake
compensator valve on all models ensures automatic adjustment
of pressure applied to rear brakes, thus preventing premature
wheel locking. There is even a warning light on the fascia which
lights up to indicate low brake fluid level or brake pad wear,
as well as a separate handbrake warning light.
These engineering features contribute to your safety.
PASSIVE SAFETY:

Passive safety is that which minimises the

consequences of an accident in which you may be involved.
On the 505 range the front and rear ends of the body shell are
designed to absorb impact through progressive deformation of
the structure, with maximum protection of the passenger
compartment.
Another aspect is the two spoke safety steering wheel
which is mounted on a collapsible energy-absorbing steering
column.
Finally, interior appointments are designed in such away
as to eradicate all sharp edges on the fascia panel.
Safety is the key feature.

ENGINE: PETROL or DIESEL

Strength, durability, quiet running and modest demands

on fuel are all features of Peugeot petrol and diesel engines.
The GL and GR models offer the 1971 cc petrol engine as
standard which produces 100 bhp PS-DIN at 5000 rpm and
119 lb ft DIN torque at 3000 rpm. This powerful twin choke
engine provides excellent acceleration coupled with exception
ally low fuel consumption for a 2-litre engine. At a constant
56 mph up to 42.2 mpg is achievable.
The GTI is powered by the larger 2165 cc petrol engine.

This overhead camshaft unit produces 130 bhp PS-DIN at

5750 rpm and 139 lb ft DIN torque at 4250 rpm.
The combination of increased power and torque coupled with
the 5-speed gearbox results in a top speed up to 115 mph.
Fuel consumption in the GTI is equally good at up to 42.8 mpg
at a constant 56 mph.
The GLD and the turbocharged GRD and GTD are
powered by Peugeot diesel engines. These offer advantages
over their petrol engined counterparts particularly valuable to
business users. They are less complex and so more reliable.
To cope with higher temperature and pressures they are

stronger and much more durable. Their main advantage is their

remarkably low fuel consumption. The GLD model returns up
to 47.9 mpg at a constant 56 mph.
The 505 GLD is powered by the 2498 cc diesel engine
producing 76 bhp PS-DIN at 4500 rpm and 111 lb ft DIN torque
at 2000 rpm.
The turbocharged GRD model uses the 2304 cc diesel
engine producing 80 bhp at 4150 rpm and 136 lb ft DIN torque
at 2000 rpm. The turbocharged GTD model increases the power
of the 2498 cc diesel engine to 95 bhp PS-DIN at 4150 rpm and
152 lb ft DIN torque at 2000 rpm.

HOW THE TURBOCHARGER WORKS:

The turbine wheel (hot wheel) is driven by the energy

of the exhaust gases, spinning the shaft at very high speed,
up to 100,000 rpm. This, in turn, drives the compressor (or cold
wheel), which, using centrifugal force, compresses the incoming
air. When the pressure reaches 8.7 lb/sq ins (above normal
atmospheric), the exhaust gases are partially diverted by the
waste gate regulator before reaching the turbine wheel.
Since the resulting gases yield less energy, the speed of the
turbine wheel is stabilised therefore limiting the supercharging.

505GL and GLD

1971cc PETROL ENGINE
2498 cc DIESEL ENGINE
Big power right from the start of the range. The GL has
the 100 bhp PS-DIN 1971 cc twin choke petrol engine coupled
with a smooth 5speed manual gearbox.
The GLD is just as easy to handle. It has Peugeot's
2498 cc diesel engine that develops 76 bhp PS-DIN and
power assisted steering. It can return up to 47.9 mpg at a
constant 56 mph. .
Lavishly equipped inside and out, standard features
include laminated windscreen, inertia reel front safety belts,
reclining front seats with fully upholstered headrestraints,
zig-zag pattern cloth upholstery, digital clock, cigar lighter,
lockable glovebox and a push button radio with twin speakers.
The GL fascia has a display of 9 warning lights and the
GLD, 11. The additional GLD warning lights are for preheater
and water in the diesel fuel. On the petrol engined GL an
econoscope uses a continuous light display to show the driver
when fuel is being used most efficiently.
The driver's all round vision is improved by provision of
a remote control mirror on each front door. The interior driving
mirror dips for night driving. Powerful halogen headlamps,
heated rear window and rear fog lights are further evidence of
Peugeot's concern for your safety at all times.
The GUGLD offers superb driving economy, comfort
and value for money.

505GR and GRD TURBO

1971cc PETROL ENGINE
2304ccTURBOCHARGED
DIESEL ENGINE
The 505 GR saloon has the 100 bhp PS-DIN petrol engine
of 1971 cc coupled to a 5-speed synchro gearbox. A 3-speed
automatic is available as an option at extra cost.
The GRD Turbo brings a new standard to diesel power
in luxury saloon cars. It makes no compromises on noise,
vibration or performance. You will find it a quiet revelation.
This Peugeot 2304 cc diesel unit develops 80 bhp PS-DIN at
4150 rpm. More important is the maximum torque of 136 lb ft
DIN at 2000 rpm. The turbocharger helps the GRD achieve a
real boost in power yet retain a remarkable fuel economy of
up to 47 mpg at a constant 56 mph. Power assisted steering
makes either version light and easy to drive both in parking
and on long trips.
A new feature of the 1985 GR and GRD turbo models is
the digital radio/stereo cassette unit with four speakers.
In addition to the front and rear balance control there is also an
automatic search and scan facility on all wavebands.
The up-down push button manual tuning and direct station
storage system make the pre-selection buttons easy to
programme.
Other standard luxury features include electric front
windows, tinted glass all round, central locking of doors and
fuel filler flap, full wheel covers and protective bodyside
mouldings.

505GTD TURBO
2498ccTURBOCHARGED
DIESEL ENGINE
For the driver who prefers diesel, the 505 GTD Turbo
offers a wickedly powerful alternative to the 505 GTI.
The 2498 cc turbocharged Peugeot engine represents
the state of the art in diesel development for luxury saloon cars.
Performance is comparable at every level with the best
in petrol engines yet this 95 bhp PS-DIN engine can achieve the
remarkable economy of up to 48.7 mpg at a constant 56 mph.
This is partly due to the powerful torque development of 152 lb ft
DIN at 2000 rpm. A pre-heater speeds easy starting in all
weathers. There is a water-in-diesel warning light on the fascia.
Apart from the power unit andthe two additional warning
lights the 505 GTD Turbo is identical in detailed specification
to the GTI model. They even share the same size 195/60 tyres
on alloy wheels.
Ease yourself into the contoureq driving seat. Adjust it
for height and take a look at the full instrumentation display.
The smooth 5-speed gearbox is an invitation to take to the open
road. Real driving satisfaction. Luxurious cosseted comfort for
your passengers. The total Peugeot experience.
Whichever version you choose, for business and leisure,
the Peugeot 505 is everything you've been looking for in a big
elegant touring car.

505GTD TURBO

505611
2165cc PETROL ENGINE
The motorway equivalent of the executive jet, the
Peugeot 505 GTI combines very high performance with luxury
specification.
The 2165 cc alloy fuel injection engine develops 130 bhp
PSDIN and the 5-speed manual gearbox can take you smoothly
to around 115 mph, where the law permits.
The GTI is very much a driver's car. The limited-slip
differential ensures optimum traction in wet or difficult
conditions. Servo assisted disc braking front and rear keeps the
powerful GTI under full control at all times.
Internally the contoured front seats provide.maximum
driver and passenger comfort. That combined with excellent
all-round visibility and an ergonomically designed instrument and
control layout ensures full driver confidence and satisfaction.
Luxury features include electric windows front and rear
and an electrically operated sunroof. Velour upholstery.
Rear seat head restraints. Stereo radio/stereo cassette with
electrically operated aerial.
The 505 GTI package has not been achieved at the
expense of practical economic motoring. With a 5-speed manual
gearbox up to 42.8 mpg can be achieved at a constant 56 mph
and with the automatic gearbox a creditable 38.2 mpg can be
expected.
With metallic or black paint, front and rear spoilers,
all included, the only options are a 3-speed automatic
transmission, leather seat trim and air conditioning.

6YEARS'
ANTI-CORROSION
WARRANTY
All Peugeot cars have the benefit of a six years' anticorrosion warranty against perforation of all body and underbody panels and each unit is meticulously treated against
permanent spread of corrosion by total immersion in a
cataphoretic bath-a process which makes the body shell
particularly resistant to corrosion.

1.
STEEL PANELS: All body parts
are thoroughly degreased to remove oil
deposited during the press operation and
to ensure full adhesion of the protective
finishes.
Corrosion resistant zinc or galvanised
plated panels are used invulnerable areas
or areas that would be difficult lo protect
after assembly.
2.
PHOSPHATING: This gives
protection against impacts and flaking;
it also improves the adhesion of the resin
film in the cathodic bath. Some box
sections are cleaned and phosphal ed
before the body shell is assembled.

3.
CATAPHORETIC BATH: This
deposits a corrosion-proofing epoxy film
15 to 20 microns thick on the whole body
shell. Box sections are pierced to assure
the protection of internal surfaces.

UNIQUE TRIPLE
COVER
In addition to the 6 year anti-corrosion warranty all
Peugeot cars described in this catalogue are covered by an
unlimited mileage warranty during the first twelve months

they have the engineering it takes to cope with the special demands placed on such a
1
vehicle. So they work better than mere saloon adaptations.
First andforemost they are capacious and rugged load carriers. Capacious, because it
is space that owners really need. Rugged, so that they can shrug off the punishment of
being fi/!ed to the brim with all the family's holiday gear or when used to carry those
large heavy and awkward items.
At the same time the Peugeot designers believe that an estate should be able to lead
a double life. Rolling up its sleeves to shift the loads when required or alternatively
rolling out the red carpet for the social occasions, as a supremely comfortable and
elegant large car. The 505 range for 1987 can adapt to both extremes.
Power trains have been revised and there is a wider spread ofchoice. Fuel-injected or
carburettor petrol engines with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission,
'

in the 5-seater Estates or the unique 718 seater Family versions with their 3 rows of
seating. A diesel which is normally aspirated, with a 5-speed manual gearbox, in an
Estate or in a Family configuration. And a turbo charged diesel with automatic in a
Family model. Somewhere in this range there is the Peugeot 505 that matches your
needs.
Certain qualities are shared by every 505. An excellent s~andard of ride, thanks to
Peugeot suspension expertise. Levels of trim and equipment that would grace many
more expensive and pretentious saloon cars. Plus the ultimate in practicality: up to
79cu.ft. of load space, on a floor over 91" long in the 2-row Estates, and still a
potential 67.7cu.ft. and 81.1" load length even in the Family versions. And with
performance and economy.
Only thoroughbreds like the Peugeot 505 Estates and Family designs could have the
ability to work so hard. And so beautifully.

MODEL IUUSTRATID SOS GTI

A Peugeot is designed around two kinds of people: the driver and his passengers.
The 505 Estates and Family models have been developed with all the right dynamic
qualities, to appeal to the discriminating motorist, and all the right style and comfort to
appeal to driver and passengers alike. Only Peugeot's long pioneering experience
could produce a range of such practicality and good taste.
The lively engines and slick transmission, manual or automatic, bring out the best in
the enthusiast. Response is instant and gives afeeling of being at one with the vehicle.
Power-assisted steering and superb suspension result in handling that is light,
precise and sure-footed. The all-round visibility is outstanding, while the fascia and
console design puts instruments and 1Tiinor controls in exactly the right places.
The minute you take the wheel ofa505 Estate or Family you'//feel at home. cavernous
though they are, thesensation is one ofdriving a nimble compact saloon. To make life
easier onjourneys at night the powerful halogen headlamps can be adjustedfrom the

fascia to suit the varying loads being carried. The door mirrors are also remote
controlled, electrically on the GT/ and GTD TURBO versions.
Passengers enjoy a degree of luxury unusual in estate cars but entirely normal for
every Peugeot 505. Velour upholstery throughout the range, with matching door
inserts. Reclining front seats with head restraints plus, on the higher specifications,
heating elements and even height and lumbar support control for the driver. Full floor
carpeting in the load area too. Tinted glass all round.
Add to this a very flexible heating and ventilation system and a high-tech audio
package with four or six speakers. and it is obvious that the standard for these cars
is a premium in an ordinary estate.
For a rare experience in space travel ta~e offin one of the Peugeot505 Estate or Family
rangefor 1987.

TECHNOLOGY
ACTIVE AND
PASSIVE SAFE1Y

Two kinds of safet!:J are designed

into ever!:} Peugeot: ACTIVE
SAFETY, to help a driver avoid
dangerous situations, and
PASSIVE SAFETY, to provide the
maximum degree of protection
round the occupants of a car
involved in an incident.
ACTIVE SAFETY
For prompt and reliable response
to a driver's manoeuvres, a car
needs good weight distribution,
steering, roadholding, and
braking.
A 505 is inherent/!:} well balanced,
and the power-assisted rack and
pinion steering is precise, with
excellent feel. The suspension
S!:JStem for the 505 Estate and
Famil!:J range is tough enough to

take the loads t!:)picall!:J imposed

on dual-purpose vehicles but
supple enough to provide an
excellent ride. Up front there are
coil spring struts. The driven rear
wheels are mounted on a coil
sprung live axle, positive/!:}
located to combat lateral swa!:J
when heavil!:J laden. Front and
rear anti-roll bars, plus shock
absorbers of unique Peugeot
design, maintain optimum t!:}ret
road contact giving the driver
constant control.

Divided brake circuits are servo

assisted, with a load sensitive
pressure limiting valve to combat
premature rear wheel locking
under severe braking. Discs and
drums are standard and S!:JStem
integrit!:J is constant/!:} monitored
via fascia warning lights.
The large glass area gives
maximum a/I-round visibilit!:J,
helped b!:J the interior and remote
controlled door mirrors. The latter
are electrically operated on the
top models, with a heating
elementfor cold ordamp weather.
Tailgate wash/wipe and a
heated rear screen are fitted
across the range.
PASSIVE SAFETY
The front and rear sections of the
bOd!:J are shock absorbing structures, progressive/!:} deforming
under impact to shield the
passenger compartment. The
soft-rimmed steering wheel is
mounted on a collapsible column
and laminated screens are
standard.
Careful interior styling has eliminated sharp edges from the
fascia and seat belts are fitted for
all the occupants. For extra peace
of mind the rear passenger doors
have childproof locks.

PETROL ENGINES
For adequate power and response
when loaded up to their full
capacity the GR models5-seater Estate and 8-seater
Famil!:}-have a 1971 cc unit, with
either manual transmission or
the optional 4-speed automatic.
Ever!:J 505 engine has 4 C!:Jlinders,
a 5-bearing crankshaft, and an
aluminium allo!:J C!:Jlinder head.
Developing 108bhp (PS-DIN) at
5250rpm and 124/b.ft. torque DIN
at onl!:J 3000rpm, the 1971 cc
engine combines performance
with econom!:} and reliabilit!:J.
With 5-speed manual transmission the top speed potential is
around 104mph, andthe0-62mph
time is just under 13 seconds.
The GTI Estate and Famil!:J designs
offer staggering performance for
such cavernous practical cars.
The 2165cc injection engine
deliver,s 130bhp (PS-DIN) at
5750rpm and an impressive
torque DIN figure of 139/b.ft. at
4250rpm. These models can
accelerate to 62mph from a
standing start in around 11.2
seconds, and onward up to a
potential maximum of 108mph,
with manual transmission. Yet
Che!:J can still return up to
37.lmpg at a constant 56mph.
For constant tune and performance, first-time starting in
all weathers. and minimum
maintenance. all these Peugeot
petrol engines have transistorised breakerless ignition.
DIESEL ENGINES
The latest generation of diesel is
built to a new concept. The
C!:Jlinder head is light allo!:J, and
the overhead camshaft is driven
b!:J a toothed belt of a composite
material incorporating glass fibre
reinforcement. The cylinder block
has dr!:J liners, giving excellent
service over a long high-mileage
life. and a 5-bearing crankshaft is
standard.
Ultra-reliable because they
operate on the principle of
compression ignition. the diesels
in the 505 GRD Estate and Famil!:J
and the GTD TURBO Family are

quiet, as smooth as petrol

engines. and miserly on fuel. The
2498cc normally aspirated unit in
the GR models is mated with
5-speed .manual transmission
and capable of up to 44 .1 mpg at a
constant 56mph. Turbocharging
further increases efficiency and
particular/!:J the torque characteristics, so that the unique GTD
TURBO Famil!:J with its standard
4-speed automatic gearbox has
excellent acceleration. 0-62mph
in around 19.9 seconds, and can
achieve up to 39.2mpg at a
constant 56mph.
TRANSMISSION
Except for the GTD TURBO Family,
all 505 Estate and Family models
are equipped with a 5-speed
manual gearbox as standard,
with the extra-cost option of
automatic transmission on the
1971 cc GR and 2165cc GT/
versions. The GTD TURBO Family
is only available with the automatic gearbox.
The automatic is a 4-speed ZF unit
with partial mechanical b!:)-pass
of the fluid torque converter in 3rd
gear and 1000/o mechanical
lock-up in the overdrive top ratio.
This brings several benefits: it
improves fuel economy while still

offering 2-pedal motoring but

leaves the driver free to use the
gearbox manual/!:} to suit the
mood of the moment. Travel
without fatigue in the downtown
rush-hour crawl or use a more
urgent technique out on the open
road; with the ZF automatic the
choice is !:}Ours.
Additional/!:}, some drivers will
appreciate the limited-slip differential fitted to the GT/ versions.

These models set the standards

for their class, spelling oue a new
definition of space travel. Able
to swallow vast amounts of
luggage and accept very Jong or
bulky items, they also present an
interior of supreme comfort for
passengers.
Up to 79cu.ft. capacity in a
5-seater Estate and over 91"
load length. Up to 67.7 cu.ft. in the
8-seater Family versions and
81.1" in load length. Whichever model you go for there's
velour upholstery: good looking,
hard wearing, and sensuous to
the touch. No suggestion of a
spartan treatmentfor the sake of
practicality. Sheer opulence all
through, from the carpeted floor
and load area to the door lining
panels and hockey stick armrests,
from the electrically powered
front windows to the fourspeaker audio installation.
Petrol or diesel, these genuinely
large cars handle like thorough-

transmission offers the ultimate
in tireless performance whatever
the load. With ratios ideally
matched to power and torque,
the owner can also achieve up
to 38.7mpg from the 1971 cc
engine, and up to 44.1 mpg from
the 2498cc diesel, at a constant
56mph in both cases.
For the ultimate in relaxed travel
choose the petrol-engined versions with the extra-cost option
of the ZF 4-speed automatic
transmission. Now you can enjoy
2-pedal driving but still get as
much as 37.2 mpg at a constant
56mph, thanks to the 4th-gear
direct drive feature.
The unique design of the 505
Family is the 3-row seating, all
facing forward, with split folddown ofthe centre row.The result
is easy access to the rear bench
seats and exceptional flexibility
in carrying people and/or
luggage.

If you're one of the growing band

ofdiesel enthusiasts as well as an
estate car user. but still demand
the ultimate in comfort plus
sparkling performance when you
put your foot down, the GTD
TURBO Family is for you.
It's a unique concept, new for
1987, with 7 seats in three
forward-facing rows, and a
potential 67.7cu.ft. of usable
luggage capacity when the centre
and rear seats are folded down.
Here is the ultimate in 2-pedal
motoring behind a muscular but
refined diesel, turbocharged to
deliver 1521b.ft. torque (DIN) at
only 2000rpm. The acceleration
is as smooth as you'd expect
from a thoroughbred, with the ZF
4-speed transmission quietly
selecting the optimum ratio.
All diesels benefit from the
extreme simplicity of their
operating principle, with no
carburettor. ignition coil, distributor, spark plugs or leads. Air
alone is admitted to each cylinder

and fiercely compressed to about

50/o of its normal volume, raising
its temperature to some 600
Centigrade. At the right moment
a precisely metered quantity of
fuel is spray injected and since
diesel spontaneously burns at
only 400C, ignition takes place.
Turbocharging increases the
inherent efficiency of the engine
by raising the pressure of combustion air even before it enters
the cylinder.
Because of the high internal
stresses, a diesel is very rugged in
its construction and consequently
very reliable. The 2498cc unit
in the GTD TURBO Family typifies
all that is best in modern diesel
design, needing a minimum of
maintenance and yielding exceptionally good fuel economy, up to
39.2mpg at a constant 56mph.
But there's more than just a
superb engine. All the GTI luxury
features are built into this
aristocrat.

Picture a supremely luxurious

5-seat car of 130bhp (PS-DIN).
Imagine 0-62mph in just over 11
seconds and a top speed of
around 108mph. Visualise true
GTl-style roadholding plus a
limited slip differential to make
the most of all that power. Then
add afolding rear seat and a
tailgate, and up to 79cu.ft. of
space for luggage, or garden
furniture, or a new chest of
drawers for the guest bedroom.
With over 91" of load length it's
amazing how you can get
moving in the 505 GT/ Estate.
Perhaps you need more than 5
seats: up to 7maybe. No problem.
We've got an outsize GT/ Family of
our own that's tailor made to take
care of yours. And all their holiday
gear. And the dog. And with
similar performance, yet capable
of up to 37.7 mpg at a constant
56mph. Where else could you get
so much out of a car, you can get
so much into?
In fact you can do even b~tter
than this by carefully adding
luggage onto these astonishing
cars. The roof rack side rails are

fitted as part of the standard

specification.
If the effort of coping with all that
lot sounds tiring, you can make
motoring easier for yourself by
opting for 4-speed automatic
transmission instead of the standard 5-speed manual gearbox.
The ZF system offers 2-pedal
driving with unprecedented fuel
economy, because 3rd gear has
partial mechanical b"!)-pass of the
torque converter and once y~ure
cruising in top, there is 100'0 direct
drive. so down town or out in the
country you get the best of both
worlds.
Power trains aren't the whole
story. There are.electric windows
on all four doors, alloy wheels,
metallic paint and remote central
locking. Six speakers and a
powered aerial for the audi~
package. And more. Even air
conditioning can be added at
extra cost if your tastes are
simple and you only want the
best.
505 GT/ Estate and Family.
The pursuit and capture of
excellence.
