States – Part 17
Health Care Reform, and a Less Coherent United States 2
The new health bill is notable in that, in
modern memory, no major piece of
legislation passed without a single
Republican vote. Even President Lyndon
B. Johnson got just shy of half of
Republicans in the House to vote
for Medicare in 1965, a piece of
legislation that was denounced with
many of the same words used to oppose
Obama’s health bill. The lack of even one
Republican vote in the Congress caused
one liberal essayist to comment: “Let’s
face it, he’s (Obama) failed in the effort
to be the non-polarizing president, the
one who can use rationality and calm
debate to bridge our traditional divides…
it turns out he’s our third highly
polarizing president in a row.”And this
was written by one of his admirers!
That increasing movement towards
polarization is a key focus, and in the last
newsletter (view here) we looked at the
fracturing within the U.S. that is the
result of spiritual powers, and how the
increasing polarization of the political
processes is one manifestation of princes
flying in the heavens. The contention
between state and federal law over the
health bill is one manifestation of that
catalytic heavenly event. Others are, or
will be: a) an increase in “home grown”
terrorist acts within the United States b) a
weakened economy even after the
recovery from the meltdown c) a loss of
international prestige and ability to
influence global outcomes, etc.
The economic factors alone should give
pause to anyone thinking about how the
U.S. will pay for health care, which will
cost nearly $1 trillion over the next ten
years. To put that number in perspective,
realize that a million seconds is 12 days;
a billion seconds is 31 years; and a
trillion seconds is 31,688 years. Of
course the cost of health care doesn’t
stand alone, it’s added to all of the other
pressing national budget items. The
Social Security fund is in dire straits as
baby boomers are entering retirement.

will be exhausted by 2041, creating an
eventual shortfall of $4.3 trillion.
Additional debt was assumed by the U.S.
government in the form of the bailout,
when more than ¾ of a trillion dollars
was allocated to stimulate the economy
and save financial institutions. If the
bailout was a country, it would be the
21st largest nation in the world, just
slightly higher than the GDP of Taiwan’s
$655 billion. Unemployment appears to
be stuck at around the 10% mark, and the
massive budget deficit is 2010 is
consuming nearly 11% of GDP1. And
that is debt only for the year 2010! When
taken as a cumulative number, the Office
of Management and Budget has predicted
that by 2012 federal debt will be $16.3
trillion, a number that equals 101% of the
GDP of the nation. In other words, we
will owe more than we produce as an
entire nation. Economically, the
movement of the nation away from
cohesion could not come at a worse time.
Coherence / Continentalism
Cohesion, or the ability for disparate
states to be forged into one, unified
national power, is the underlying power
that made the United States the most
powerful nation and largest economy the
world has ever seen. There was a
deliberate building of a strong national
culture and federal institutions that
brought unity and coherence to 50
disparate states and formed them into the

United States of America. The ability for
these individual states to stick together has
shifted because of catalytic events in the
unseen realm, and while it will take time
for things to eventualize on the earth, they
are already in the process of devolving. It
will surely involve political processes,
probably lawsuits in federal and district
courts – but the nation is heading towards a
more fractured and less cohesive condition.
The nation began as 13 individual colonies
of England, much like the modern
Caribbean where each island has its own
separate government though they share a
common history and culture. The colonies
united in their commitment to go to war to
reject English governance, and formed into
a union. Following the Revolutionary War,
America rapidly expanded through
acquisition of territory and a philosophy of
expansion known as Manifest Destiny. This
belief that the United States was destined to
expand from the Atlantic seaboard to the
Pacific Ocean was based in a view that
expansion was an obvious intention
(manifest) and a certainty based in a divine
mandate (destiny). John L. O’Sullivan, who
coined the term, wrote that “the far
reaching, the boundless future will be the
era of American greatness. In its
magnificent domain of space and time, the
nation of many nations is destined to
manifest the excellence of divine
principles.” 2
As the United States grew, 37 states were
added to the original 13 “colonies” and a
powerful union was forged that combined
the strength and resources of vast territories
into one nation. An early proponent of
“Continentalism” was John Quincy Adams,
a leading figure in U.S. expansion between
the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and the

reality is that the coherence of America
has been altered – deep divisions lie at
the core of this nation and they will not
be easily resolved.
There has been intense partisanship in
America before, and major events, which
could have been destabilizing, but
throughout history the nation had an
amazing ability to be built as one. That is
not because of the skill of politicians or
economists, nor because the cultural
model of America was superior – it is
because of the maneuverings of things
that can’t be seen. In 1972 President
Nixon resigned in disgrace rather than
face sure impeachment, and his successor
granted him a full pardon for Watergate
and the cover-up; the same type of
actions have toppled other nations.
In the 1860s President Lincoln ordered
his generals to crush the rebellion of the

American history lasted for four years,
with 30% of males in the South and 10%
in the North aged 20-40 dying in the
