(1) Question NO.1 is compulsory.

(2) Attempt any four questions out of remaining six questions.
(3) Clearly mention the assumptions made if any.
(4) Use of Refrigerant, Psychometric charts and tables, steam table are permitted.

1. (a) Derivean expressionfor ideal COP of a Bell-Colemancycle for air refrigeration.

(b) Discussthe effect of suctionsuperheatand liquid subcoolingon the performance
of standard vapour compression cycle.
(c) Discuss adiabatic mixing of two different streams of air.
(d) Defineeffectivetemperature. Enlist the factors governing effectivetemperature.

2. (a) Explaintypes of refrigerants, numbering system for halocarbon refrigerants 8

with few examples in each case.
(b) Explain Cascade system of refrigeration.
6
(c) A refrigerationmachine working on standard vapour compression cycle uses 6
R-12 as refrigerant. It operates between the pressures 2.5 bar and 9 bar.
Using p-h chart, estimate the theoretical COP.
If actual COP is 0,65 of theoretical value, calculate the net cooling produced
per hour. Assume mass flow rate of refrigerant as 5 kg/min.
3. (a) A Boot-strapsystem is used in an aircraft air-conditioningsystem. The ambient 14
air temperatureis 15C and pressure is 0,85 bar. Due to isentropic ramming
actionpressureincreasesto 1 bar. This ram air is used in the heat exchangers.
The ram air is then further compressed to 3.25 bar in primary compressor.
Pressure after secondary compressor is 4.25 bar. The cabin pressure is
maintainedat 0,9 bar. Temperatureof air leavingthe cabin is 22 C. Compressor
efficiency is 90% and turbine efficiency is 85%. Effectiveness of both heat
exchangers is O'7.
Find - (i) COP
(ii) Power required per Ton of refrigeration.
6
(b) Explain practical vapour absorption cycle with a neat sketch.
. (a) A mixture of dry air and water vapour is at 21C DBT and 15 9 OPT. Total 10
pressureis 736 mm if Hg. Calculate the following without using psychometric
chart (i) Specific humidity
(ii) Specific volume
(Hi) Enthalpy
(iv) Relative humidity.
(b) Describe body temperature regulation and effects of extreme hot and cold 6
climate on human body.
4
(c) Write a short note on capillary tube.

(a) An air-conditioned space is maintained at 27 C DBT and 50% Rf

The ambient conditions are 40 C DBT and 27 C WBT. The spac

(ii) Latent heat gain of space in kW
(iii) Cooling load of the air washer in kW if 30% of the air supplie
