Founded in 1992, the Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) owns and

manages 12 preserves on Houstons west side, each with a unique
history, geology, and wildlife community. It is a feather in our cap that
we have protected nearly 20,000 acres of irreplaceable grasslands
and wetlands in this birdwatchers and hunters paradise. It is so
special the National Audubon Society recently named the Katy Prairie
a Global Important Bird Area.
The Katy Prairie is home to more than 300 resident and migratory
bird species, 110 species of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles,
400 species of wildflowers and grasses, and thousands of terrestrial
insects and aquatic invertebrate species.
As such, it is an unparalleled natural resource for Houstonians and
has something for everyone. KPCs recreational programs and visitor
amenities open the doors of the Katy Prairie so the public can more
readily enjoy this extraordinary conservation area for birding, hiking,
biking, nature explorations, hunting, and other recreational activities.
The 2014 Bash HonoreesJanie and Gareth Cook, Neva and John
Dawson, and Christy and John Murchisonhave played an important
role in this endeavor by significantly improving visitor access to the
Katy Prairie by originating and funding the Matt Cook Memorial
Wildlife Viewing Platform.
We hope you will join us in celebrating their efforts and in building a
nest egg for the Katy Prairie Conservancy.
