The European Automotive Congress was thought to be a common scientific event of the traditional biannual European Automotive Engineers Cooperation (EAEC) Congress (this year at its 14th edition) and the
annual international Conference of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Romania (SIAR) ESFA.
The Congress was organized by the SIAR and the Automotive Engineering Department of the University
Politehnica of Bucharest in cooperation with EAEC under the patronage of Fdration Internationale
des Socits dIngnieurs de Techniques dAutomobile (FISITA).
The motto of the Congress (Academia, Industry and Government: together for automotive engineering
development) was an indication of the organizers belief that there is a need for meetings and discussions
about the current and future challenges of the automotive world in order to find the best solutions. In
other words, we are convinced that the challenges of the future can only be overcome if these tripartite
discussions occur permanently.
The authors of the papers that will be presented at the Congress are experts from research, industry and
universities coming from 14 countries among which nine from Europe. Their papers are covering the
latest issues such as: fuel economy and environment, automotive safety and comfort, automotive reliability and maintenance, new materials and technologies, traffic and road transport systems, advanced
engineering methods and tools, advanced powertrains and hybrid and electric drives.
Therefore, we hope these papers will generate fruitful discussions about an exciting topic: the automotive engineering in the light of the future challenges.

Automotive Engineering Department was founded in 1959 within the Polytechnic

Institute of Bucharest. During the 50 years of activity, its teaching staff provided higher
education of more then 5000 engineers and contributed to the continuing education for
an important number of postgraduates.

SIAR is the professional organization of the Romanian automotive engineers, a corporate
body, an independent and non-profit association, active member of FISITA (Federation
Internationale des Societes dIngenieurs des Techniques de lAutomobile) and EAEC

ESFA History

he Department of Automotive Engineering from the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest organizes since over 30 years the Conference titled "Fuel
Economy, Safety and Reliability of Motor Vehicles - ESFA". The first edition was
hold in automn of 1981.
The successful of this scientific event is revealed by its magnitude, number of participants, number and quality of papers presented and published in proceedings
volumes, as well as by the actuality of the topics of its sections. In this respect, it
has to be noticed that, if the topics of early editions were focused on the three
directions mentioned in the title event, i.e. fuel economy, safety and reliability of
motor vehicles, starting with the opening to an international participation, the
topics were diversified, in accordance with the spectacular developments in automotive engineering and new concerns of engineers and researchers involved in
the field: working processes in vehicle systems and their modeling, vehicle and
environment, hybrid and electric drives, new materials and technologies, traffic
and road transport systems, fuel economy and environment, automotive safety
and comfort, automotive reliability and maintenance.
