Theres a color for the thing everyone

wants most. Maybe its ruby. As in slippers.
And three clicks. And the feeling theres
no place like it. Its the color of the hearts
deepest desire: to be where you truly belong.
For everything that matters,
theres a deep, rich, enduring color.
Its the color of being gone a little too long,
then nally coming home.

In the garden of a
19th-century Italianate
brownstone in Greenwich Village, we painted
a latticework fence in
this dark, almost-black
green. Black is the
perfect backdrop for
the rich greens of a
garden. It absorbs light
and allows the owers
and foliage to take
the foreground.

When you see yellow

in a garden, its like a
ower color. It says,
Hi. Notice me. And it
sets o the variety
of greens in the
happiest way. This
yellow bench is a
bright note in winter,
when everything else
looks dreary. I added
lavender cushions
to make it the perfect

lavender, and green.

COLOR
FOR THE GARDEN

I used this vivid,

Mexican-inspired
teal-green on a pot
thats the centerpiece
of the fountain in
my front garden. It
mixes wonderfully
with the Moroccan
tile and becomes this
vibrant, kinetic oasis
of color, pattern, and
splashing water.
It sets the tone for the
whole house.

All my old rattan furniture was looking really

shabby, and I decided
that in order to preserve
it, I had better paint it.
But not something safe
like gray or Peale green.
Its California! So this is
a slightly more intense
version of the blue wall
in my back garden. Its a
nice surprise on the
furniturewith chartreuse cushions.
NANCY GOSLEE POWER

BLUEBERRY 2063-30

I couldnt change the

pipe railing on a rooftop
terrace overlooking
Central Park, so I
painted it. Nothing too
intense or unnatural
I chose this dark purple
because I thought it
worked with the sky. It
complements the tropical-wood decks and the
bluestone paving.
MARIO NIEVERA
BENJAMIN MOORE

I usually connect the

color of the garden gates
to an accent color on
the house, so I also used
this rich, deep blackgreen on the shutters
and doors. It has a little
more warmth than the
typical Colonial Revival
black-green. It comes
to life in the sun and
sets o the lush greens
of the surrounding
pastures.

I had a design professor

who said that green is
really the best shade for
a garden. Its the color
thats most prominent

of spring leaves and
fresh growth. I used it

ART IN LIGHT

Troy Lighting, Corbett Lighting and Hudson Valley Lighting

are all known for pushing the envelope in terms of creativity
and use of innovative materials. Each companys 2013
collections are no exception, with some of the most daring
and artistic lighting designs to date.

1. POETRY BY CORBETT LIGHTING

1.

features walnut tone stems that pierce

through uttering metallic sheets, giving
the design a feeling of energy and
movement. A hang-straight canopy and
hand-crafted iron frame provide balance,
while the Tranquility silver leaf nish
offers unexpected grace.

2. DEYO BY HUDSON VALLEY LIGHTING

is a sculptural art form. While the wide
drum shade and elongated shape give
nod to Art Moderne, the piece puts a spin
on tradition by suspending the shade
from uniquely counterpoised metalwork.

3.

2.

3. HOUDINI BY CORBETT LIGHTING

is a mystifying piece that showcases open squares
tilted on a diagonal with candelabra-style bulbs
balanced inside. The framed interiors feature
alternating chandeliers, with crystal cylinders and
droplets that vary in smoke and clear tones.

4.

5.

4. RELATIVITY BY TROY LIGHTING

pays tribute (in a fun and artistic way)
to the brilliance of Albert Einstein.
The sconce, featuring an early electric
style lamp, is crafted from hand-formed
iron and rebar. The design also displays
industrial touches and a chalkboard
nish with hand drawn equations and
unique renditions of Mr. Einstein.

5. REVOLUTION BY TROY LIGHTING

is both abstract art and a practical
source of illumination. It features gears
or cogs at each end, hand-forged iron
rebar arms that appear to be mechanical
parts in motion and a chain link
connected to an industrial pipe stem.

just could not live without it. Covered in mohair, velvet, and

I LOVE
MY BED
JESSIE R ANDALL

Interview by
BARBARA KING
Produced by
VICTORIA JONES
Photograph by
ERIK MELVIN

What were your other

ideas for the bedroom?

As soon as the kids are in bed, I get

in mine. Its my home base. I read on my
Kindle and do crafts like quilting.

I wanted it to look like

a hotel suite, to be a
calming retreat from my
hectic life. The bed is
elegant and understated,
and the room is uncluttered. The only other
furniture pieces are the
end tables, a pair of
vintage outdoor metal
pieces. My dad painted
them taupe and added
glass tops.
Where are your bureaus?

No bureaus, just built-in

shelves in the little closet.
How much time do
you spend in your retreat?

As soon as the kids are in

bed, I get in mine. Its my
home base. I read on my
Kindle and do crafts like
quilting. I love things that
are made with love, that
become keepsakes.
What was your
childhood bedroom like?

I had half an Ikea bunk

bedmy brother got
the other halfan
old desk that my dad
renished, a stool with
a quilted top that my
mother made, and a
chair. Thats it.
BARBARA KING: Did you

run out of closet space?

My
big, beautiful walk-in
closet did get turned
into a room for my third
sonI have six-year-old
twins and a two-year-old.
I just have one tiny closet
now, so I only keep about
10 or 15 pairs of shoes in
there. I switch them out
every three months or so,
once I get a new batch
from my latest collection.
There are lots more in
storage bins in the basement of our town house.

JESSIE R ANDALL:

44

HOUSEBEAUTIFUL.COM

Did you also run out of

wallpaper?

That was intentional!

I have wallpaper in every
room, but I like to use
it in a modern way, as
an accent. In my bedroom its on a chimney
bump-out in the wall,
which is nice because it
frames the bed. And the
pearlescent glow of the
paper has a chic, sophisticated look that adds a
little punch to the room.
Even your oor glows.

It was inspired by a photo

I saw on a blog of a oor

with a glossy, whitewashed nish. My husband got in touch with

the person who owned
the house, and he gave
us the processit took
about 15 steps. The color
is Swiss Coee, by Behr.
After that kind of labor,
no wonder its rug-less.

I just didnt want to deal

with rugs getting dirty.
Its hard to keep things

a dog. We actually have

Any more hard-and-fast

My husband has a rule

that all the bedding and
towels have to be white.
Hes very particular. He
always starts out against

he ends up liking it.
Does he voice his opinion about your shoe and
handbag designs?

He does all the marketing

for the company. Hes
got excellent taste, but
he usually stays out of
the design arena.

No, my parents werent

Your Childs Room

Whether for a toddler or a teen, you want it
to be fun and functional. Here are nine designers
with captivating rooms to inspire young minds.

Of course I had lots

of ideas about how
my childrens rooms
should look, but
I wanted to empower
them, so I consulted
with each. My 13-yearold, Isabelle, went
for a blue, brown, and
cream palette with
splashes of orange.
We decorated the
walls with a mix of her
own art and some
photography, but the
pice de rsistance
is denitely the feathered light xture.

My eight-year-old son, Beck, is an avid

collectorautographed baseballs,
vintage y-shing gear, arrowheads
and a voracious reader. The burled maple
console next to his reading chair is a
handsome way to display his treasures.

TAMI RAMSAY, INTERIOR DESIGNER

For my three-year-old,
Tahlia, I started with a
vibrant hand-painted
John Robshaw fabric
originally a pillow
and had it wrapped
around a simple drum
light. But to me, the
most special element
is the quilt draped
across her bed. It has
been in my family forever and was on my
parents bed throughout my childhood.
I adore knowing that
my sweet girl is comforted by it each night.

dierent styles. They range from

small, rustic one-room houses to large,
elegant plantation or manor houses.
Plain and austere or ornamented with
gingerbread, they were seldom designed
by professional architects; instead
they were built in true vernacular fashion by carpenters following age-old
patterns and local styles, all the while
adapting and evolving the designs to
suit personal needs and tastes.
Farmhouses have often been taken
for granted or underappreciated because
of their very commonness. But today,
farmhouses are being restored by people who [want to] recapture the original
spirit and character of the house while
avoiding incongruous elements. While
they range from humble to grand, the
objects gathered and the environments
created in these houses all reect an
earlier farm aesthetic that is comfortable, unpretentious, and convenient, as
well as very visually appealing.
Common themes are capacious kitchens with pantries, cupboards, deep
enameled sinks, scrubbed wooden
tables, and pine-paneled walls, and sitting rooms with comfortable old sofas

and Windsor and wing chairs gathered

around replace hearths. There are portraits of ancestors on the walls, but also
yard-sale and ea-market nds. Patina
is relished, and there is a proclivity for
preserving old textures, and for favoring
the old over the new. The end result is a
farmhouse that looks like it has always
been that way, even when it hasnt.
Dreams of raising sheep or goats, or
keeping bees for honey, may not be
realistic propositions for all of these
homeowners. But as Annick de Bellefeuille at Belleeld Manor told us, Just
as it is, this farm gives us a harmonious
life. There is always something useful
to do, like working in the garden, xing
something in the barn, keeping up with
the house, cooking in the big kitchen,
experiencing the pleasures of dining
outside, walking around the elds,
or watching the sunset from the barn.
The farmhouse can be a refuge from
the clamor of an intrusive world, and it
can redirect ones consciousness toward
what is real, natural, and important.
And according to the inhabitants of the
houses in this book, it brings joyfulness and a deeply felt sense of beauty
as well. STEVE GROSS AND SUSAN DALEY

Beurre Blanc

BEURRE BLANC its nothing short

of magic. Honestly, at this point in our
yearlong relationship, I feel as if I can
share a closely guarded culinary secret
with you: If you can make a superior
sauce, people will think you cook much
better than you actually do. Forget
culinary arts, knife skills, braising,
or any of the other typical themes of
beginners cooking courses, and jump
right ahead to something that requires
very little acumen at all, ensures
success, and provides near-instant
pleasure: sauce making.
In time for grilling season, the sauce
that seems just right is that most classic
of all French sauces: beurre blanc. Its

a reduction of shallots, white wine, and

lemon juice, with cubes of cold butter
whisked in to make a luxurious, fully
emulsied sauce that explodes with
avor. Its really easy to do, and tastes
like youve been cooking for hours,
but nothing could be further from the
truth. It takes only 10 to 15 minutes
to reduce all thismaybe a little more
or maybe less, depending on the size
of your saucepanand then a couple
of minutes more to whisk in the butter.
The traditional version can be a little
bit temperamental, so Ive added the
slightest bit of heavy cream to stabilize
it. That way, you can reheat it without
worrying that it will break. I didnt >>

invent this trick, but sure
wish I hadits a great idea.
To say beurre blanc is
transformative is to say the
very, very least. A tablespoon
of this deliciousness added
to a lovely piece of plain grilled
or poached sh is nothing
short of a bona de gift from
the heavens. The same goes
for chicken, shrimp, and,
depending on what you add
to this sauce, even beef. Heres
another bit of news: That
same tablespoon of sauce can
make any overcooked whatever
palatable as well. (Im quite
sure you, of all people, would
never have any friends or
family who would dare
overcook things on the grill,
but just in case.) It almost
doesnt matter what you put
this stu onthe results
will nearly always be successful. Its so good I might even
want to eat it on an aspirin.
Feel free to experiment with
this base by stirring in a couple
of tablespoons of chopped dill,
or tarragon, or parsley, or
roasted red peppers, or sauted
tomatoes with fresh basil, just
as you nish making the sauce.
You can even add a little Dijon
mustard and serve it over a
wonderful piece of grilled beef.
I cant tell you how many
people claim that they dont
usually like sh but love it
when I serve it at my house.
Im dying to tell them its just
the sauce, but thatll be our
secret. Let me know what you

Happy cooking! Love, Alex.

The reduced shallot, wine, and lemon juice mixture, just before the
cream, butter, salt, and white pepper are added.

PERFECT BEURRE BLANC

Serves 68

2 medium shallots,
finely chopped
1 cup white wine

teaspoon salt
teaspoon ground white pepper

12 tablespoons (1 sticks)
salted butter, cold and cut
1 tablespoon heavy cream
into small cubes

cup lemon juice

1 In a heavy saucepan over high heat, combine the shallots,

wine, and lemon juice. Boil the mixture until it is thick and syrupy.
This will take between 10 and 15 minutes.
2 Reduce the heat to very low, and add the cream, salt, and
pepper. Whisk in the cubed butter, a little at a time.
3 When the butter is fully combined and the mixture is emulsied, remove it from the heat. Serve the sauce immediately,
or store it in a thermos until you are ready to serve. The sauce can
be made up to about an hour before serving, and then reheated.
Do not let it bubble on the reheat.
VARIATIONS Once youve mastered this base, get creative! To
vary the avor, you can add a couple of tablespoons of any of
the following ingredients to the nished sauce: chopped chives,
dill, tarragon, or parsley; pureed or chopped roasted red peppers; a little mustard; or sauted tomatoes with fresh basil.

MIMI READ: This house just about shouts

carpe diem.
S T EPHEN SHUBEL : Thats California
living for you. This is on a 2-acre
vineyard in the middle of wine country, but its not your average Mediterranean or modernist Sonoma house.
The homeowner wanted a young,
playful, fresh look. Its not city and its
not country. It denitely says, Kick o
your shoes and take o your socks.
And the rest of your clothes. That pool
looks inviting.
This house was designed for throwing parties, indoors and out, and the
owner loves giving pool parties. Its
used mainly in the hot season, so it
didnt have to be decorated with cold
weather in mind. I was trying to capture the spirit and energy of summer.
And when I think of summer, I think
of colorful bathing suits and shorts,
and drinks with bright hues.
So you used lots of color?
I used a lot of white with jolts of bright,
bold colors that stand up to the sun.
These colors to me are new and now
theyre so dialed up.
Is your client that high-spirited?
Yes, very. Her name is Gabriella Sarlo.
Shes dynamic and charming. When
she walks into the room, heads turn.
She actually dresses like the house
she might turn up in a bright purple
sundress with a big black-and-whitestriped purse and fashionable patent
leather sandals in some great color.
What role did she play in the decorating?
She used to have a vintage furnishings showroom and now she has a
Web site where she sells her pieces.
We collaborated on this house. My
role was to give artistic direction, provide design inspirations, and come up
with ideas for furnishings. She often
found look-alike alternatives to my
designs at better prices.
Is everything new?
Almost all of it is. A lot of summer
houses are filled with castoffs, but
Gaby didnt have heirlooms to bring
here. She wanted to use a lot of online
and catalog furniture. In the living
room, the tufted chesterfield-style
sofa and chairs are by Restoration
Hardware. But we tweaked the chairs

by reupholstering the backs and seat

cushions in a lime greenand-beige
stripe to match the existing linen.
To add a little zing?
Its more economical than reupholstering the entire chair. We tweaked
a lot of off-the-rack things. For the
dining room, we bought four vintage
cane chairs and mixed them with
two from a catalog; those we updated
with coral-colored backs. In the master bedroom, an Ikea love seat was
slipcovered to look more inviting. We
piped it in blue. We even took out the
Dacron stung and replaced it with
feathers. A looser slipcover makes it
not have that sti, perfect look.
What household things can I fearlessly
buy online?
Baskets are great. Light xtures and
hardware, too. Mirrorsbut definitely not antique ones. Something
simple like a small side table is usually neyou just need to be familiar
with that companys nishes, because
those dont register on a computer.
Order from brands you trust, and
know whether or not you can return

the item if its not the quality or the

vision you had in mind.
What would you never buy online?
Fabric. You need to feel it, look at the
colors, see the scale of a pattern. For
upholstery, its really important to sit
on a sofa or chair. And the best way to
shop for antiques and vintage pieces
is to see them in person, so you can lift
them up and look underneath, to see
the patina. But the truth is, I do sometimes buy antiques online. I always
have the seller send extra photos of
all the imperfections.
This is a new house, right? Was its architecture a help or a hindrance?
Its probably 12 or 13 years old. It
almost looks like a plantation house
on the outside. On the inside, there
are these huge volumes that loom over
you. The living room was dark and
felt like a funnel. We painted a lot of
things in at, chalky white and made
the walls more neutral so the colors
could pop. The whole idea was for her
to be able to change up the space.
Did you add the huge bookcase?
That was existing. Its inexpensive
plywood and was stained dark walnut. We painted it taupe and distressed it to blend with the walls.
And we mirrored the back to make the
room feel more expansive. We painted
the big hearth whiteits composite
stone, so its not as if we were painting over precious river rocks. The twig
chandelier was bronzy brown and got
the same treatment, making it more
sculptural. And we installed a new
mantel and painted that white, too. It
was like turning on a light.
The poolhouse reminds me of the decor
in beachy Mediterranean hotels.
It was the owners idea to convert her
garage into a poolhouse. We used
oor-to-ceiling architectural mirror
to make it feel larger and to reect the
scenery and light, so no matter which
way you face, you see trees, sky, and
greenery. The columns are the same
style as the ones on the front of the
house. Theres also a bar for drinks.
Its quite wonderful to sit on that sofa,
sip wine, and look out at the rolling
hills of Sonoma.

THESE ELEGANT ROOMS PUT THE ACCENT

ON HIGH STYLE WITHOUT SACRIFICING COMFORT

Interior design by N O EL J EF F R E Y

CHRISTINE PIT TEL: Do jaws drop when people walk in?

Actually, it happens as soon as you

come to this property in the Hamptons. You drive
down this long road through the trees, and suddenly you see the house. The front is an exact copy
of an 18th-century chteau in France, but the back
is more contemporary, with lots of large windows
because there is a wonderful view of the water.
These rooms are eleganta word used very freely
these days. What does it mean to you?
Elegance is renement. In terms of design, its
something thats classic and timeless, and thats
what you see in these interiors. You really cant pinpoint when they were done. It could have been years
ago or yesterday.
You obviously have a gift for nding unusual objects.
What are those fabulous armoires in the living room?
Theyre Italian, circa 1830, hand-painted in the
Pompeian style. I found them at Ariane Dandois
in Paris, and they were one of the rst things we
bought. I felt very lucky because we needed something big to anchor this large, lofty space, and
thats hard to nd. I saw them almost as paintings,
and then in contrast the Art Deco bas-relief on the
wall between them is all white, and it adds more
dimension. Then theres a French 1940s bench
that complements the French 1940s sconces. Two
Biedermeier chairsIve always thought of Biedermeier as a precursor to Art Decoa Grange sofa,
two club chairs...
And thats just one seating group.
Its a big room, and we needed to create dierent
sections. The sofas anking the replace are more
intimate, for a smaller group.
Anything would seem small compared to the other
sofa, which looks as if it could seat eight!
Its rather like a banquette. For me, its all about
scale and proportion. When I did the oor plan, I
drew in a 10-foot sofa, which I thought was correct,
and had one made. Furniture that size has to be put
together in the room. You cant travel with it. Once
I have the oor plan, I make a list of everything I
need. I know exactly what size each piece should be.
I never think twice. It goes in and it ts perfectly.
Where did you learn how to do all this?
I went to Pratt for interior design, then Columbia
University to study architecture. But I didnt want
to be an architect; I just wanted to further my education. Then I got one or two jobs and went into
business for myself at a young age. But the reality
is, you can learn only so much. Its like an artist
NOEL JEFFREY:

who paints a picture. You can learn the techniques,

but the rest has to come from inside you. Sometimes the reason I choose one thing over another
is inexplicable. People who are not designers labor
over what color blue to use. Theyre unsure, but I
can make those decisions very fast.
So, what can the novice learn from this room?
You want to think about balance. The two armoires
are busy, but the rest of the furnishings are simple.
The only other pattern is on the rug and a few pillows. And the color palette is subtle, basically beige
with some yellow and some blueand that relates
to the adjacent rooms. The dining room on one side
is yellow, and the TV room on the other side is blue.
Something interesting happens as soon as you put
those two lamps on the console tables.
A large room suddenly feels more intimate. Actually, there are four of thosetwo on each console.
Theyre very quiet lamps and do just what theyre
supposed to do. And then that round iron cocktail table with the antiqued-mirror top looks like
it could have come out of the garden. Every room
has a piece of furniture like that. Along with the
enormous windows, it helps blur the boundaries
between inside and out.
Where did you find that glorious boiserie in the
master bedroom?
It came with the house; its Louis XVI, in the most
pale, washed-out green. Then I designed my own
take on a baroque bed, with cleaner lines. I thought
that bridged the gap between the 18th and 21st centuries. The headboard is upholstered in lavender,
which reappears in a deeper version on the curtains
and in a lighter version on the iridescent ceiling
and in the rug. I love lavender and green together.
Its all very pale and delicate. But whats that bold
black-and-white stripe doing on the bench?
Every now and then I like to do something exciting,
in the midst of all the calm. And the black refers
back to the black-lacquered French desk by the
window. You know, just a little twist.
What is it about French style thats so appealing?
Its familiar, because weve all seen it in Europe or a
movie or a museum. But most of the furniture here
isnt French. If you think about pictures of French
chteaus in design magazines, theyre often decorated with pieces from everywhere, from antique
to contemporary. And it all looks comfortable and
freshjust like this house.

LEFT: The living room, with its classical limestone fireplace and Savonnerie rug, may look very refined, but its also
very approachable, Jeffrey says. We mixed a lot of periods in this room. Its a more relaxed way of collecting and
decorating with antiques. You dont feel as if you have to get dressed up to be in here. A pair of custom-made Jansen sofas
are covered in Drifts, an ivory-white boucl by J. Robert Scott. The blue accents in the rug are picked up in Claremonts

looks like it belongs in a garden, which seems right for this indoor/outdoor room. The sofa is upholstered
in Colefax & Fowlers Liscombe Damask, and an extra-large ottoman is covered in Edelman leather.

For a New Jersey house built in 1896, designers William Cummings

and Bernt Heiberg balanced classic architectural details with the homeowners
minimalist leanings. In the dining room, Benjamin Moores China
White and Super White paints soften the ornate mantelpiece and moldings.

This is one of the most

serene houses Ive ever seen. Yet you say
this is the home of a rebel.
WILLIAM CUMMINGS: The client wanted
to push borders. She lives in a turn-ofthe-century house in the middle of the
suburbs, where people tend to favor a
lavish use of wallpaper, colored carpets, and patterns everywhere. But
shes a minimalist and didnt want
clutter. She had us rip out the traditional country kitchen and get rid of
the bright paint. She didnt want a
house that looked exactly like the one
next door. I consider that very daring!
Then how do you keep minimalism from
feeling plain?
There is actually a large amount of
ornament in these rooms. For example, the dining room has a detailed
fireplace mantel, crown moldings,
and an elaborate built-in china cabinet that was original to the house.
They lend texture to the room and
were the starting point for my partner, Bernt Heiberg, and me. Because
we had that kind of architectural
environment, we could use more
simple furnishings, like the sea grass
carpet and upholstered chairs, for
contrast. Not drawing a lot of attention to the furniture creates a subliminal message of coziness and calm.
So that explains the palette of mostly
beige and white.
It only seems monochromatic at rst.
The way the textiles play together creates variation and visual interest. The
wool curtains contrast with the linen
rolling blinds; the loose washed weave
on the sunroom sofa is markedly different from the smooth wools and linens in the living room.
I also see hints of gray and black.
The homeowner collects black-andwhite photography, and we tried to
connect the rooms to the pictures.
We brought in charcoal elements
throughout the house: You see it in
the gray annel ottoman in the hall,
in the bronze legs of the living room
tables, and in the ticking stripe on
the pillows. We wanted to create high
contrasts going from dark black to
light. That gives a room depth, just
like it does in a photograph.

Sunlight oods these rooms. This would

be a hard house to feel depressed in.
My partner and I started our business
in Oslo, and we still have an office
there, as well as in New York. Natural
light is very important to the Scandinavian sensibility. But we also like to
take advantage of areas with a lack of
light. There is a library in the house
that has no windows, but it does have
a fireplace. We painted the walls a
slightly darker color than the rest of
the house and chose dark wood furniture to create a cozy corner amid all
the other light-lled spaces.
How did you end up with such a sleek
kitchen in the middle of an old house?
The main part of the house is from
the 1890s, but the kitchen is a recent
addition. Bernt and I tried to come up
with a story to marry the two. We took
our inspiration from the utilitarianstyle kitchens typical of 19th-century
homes with servants. We used a lot
of those elements and then modernized them a bit: The drawer hardware evokes the period, but the drawers themselves are completely at in

the front, with no embellishments.

The stainless steel countertops are
also typical, but we simply squared
them o without any decorative ourishes. And we opted for a freestanding refrigerator instead of a built-in
so that we could treat it like a piece
of furniture. When you walk from
the original entrance hall into the
kitchen, you feel a sense of continuity
even though it is not a replica of a Victorian kitchen.
Boy, it looks like youd need an army of
workers to assemble those tile walls.
They were quite an amazing puzzle to
put together. The client is extremely
detail orientedthe amount of time
something takes is irrelevant to her
so long as the results are perfect.
Shes a mathematician! We drew and
mapped out each wall, so we knew
the placement of every tile before we
started the work. Usually, you would
trim the tiles to t corners and edges
and downplay the eect with moldings. But we were after a cleaner look
and didnt use moldings, so we needed
the tiles to be whole. We elevated the
ceiling and adjusted the location of
each window to t each rectangle
you have full tiles meeting the countertops and tting perfectly under the
ceiling and windows.
Youd have to be brave to live in a house
like this with four children. Did you
make accommodations for them with
slipcovers or special fabrics?
Not really. What you see is how the
family lives. The homeowner is an
extremely organized person and has
a great personal aesthetic. When we
took these pictures, we didnt have
to do the usual cleaning up and styling of the rooms. The children range
in age from 10 to 18 and like to tease
and say, Mommy is quite strict, but
in fact, they are all well mannered
and respectful of the place. That said,
just o the kitchen we created a mudroom with stainless steelfaced cabinets and drawers; each family member gets one. Its like a stylized locker
room. We wanted to give them a practical area where they could come in
and throw o their shoes and coats.
PRODUCED BY DORE T TA SPERDU TO

We used just a few large upholstered pieces in the sunroom

to make a place where the
family could take o their
shoes, put up their feet, and
relax, Cummings says. To
create an enveloping, cocoonlike feeling, walls and ceiling
were custom colored to match
the Decati Belgian linen on
the Todi sofas and ottoman by
Lucca & Co. The simple white
linen roller blinds, based on an
18th-century Swedish design,
appear throughout the house.

LISA CREGAN: Wait a minute. Your living

room is outside?
Yes! We
thought, Why not? Five years ago, my
husband, Bob, and I bought this property with two small 1920s houses on
it. We built an outdoor living room to
connect the cottages and then turned
the main houses living room into our
dining room.
Its a little unusual to walk through the
front door and into a dining room.
People said, Liza, youre a real estate
agent! You know you cant do that!
But I love it. At parties you walk in to a
million twinkling candles on the dining room table, then before you know
it, youre in the kitchen, and then
youre outside again! We use breezeways and covered outdoor paths to get
back to the second house, where we
have a bar, a family room, and some
guest rooms. Were always outdoors.
Even in hurricane season?
Yes. Weve even had monsoons! But the
deep overhangs of the roof keep us dry.
And this loggia is really wide. Most
people make them too narrow; you
need at least 12 to 14 feet of width if you
want to use a loggia as a proper living
roomwith two sofas, two armchairs,
and, ideally, a replace. Our replace
was Bobs brilliant idea. Its made from
stones and shells Ive collected all over

Scotland, and the Palm Beach inlet.
Almost every night, we light a re, pull
up some chairs, and put our feet up on
the hearth.
How did you create calm from such a
bold mash-up of colors?
A good friend of mine, designer
Judy Kling, was my sounding board,
and, of course, my mother was a
big inspiration.
Not surprising, since your mother, Lilly
Pulitzer, is a legendary icon of both
Palm Beach and the fashion world.
Yes, and as you can imagine, Mom
made me fearless. Everything was

and I loved it! For my mother, it was

What else did you learn at Lillys knee?
My mother loved large scaleeverything had to be bigger than life! See
my huge dining room table? Theres
nothing forma l about it, and it
grounds the strong mustard-gold
walls. At cocktail parties, weve had
10 people sitting on that coee table
in the living room. I think large,
primitive furniture makes bright
color feel less fussy. My end tables
are always oversize, and my kitchen
island is 12 feet long. When we renovated the kitchen, we removed the
original ceiling and recycled some of
the wood for the island. Its so durable,
we chop directly on it, and for dinner
parties we just yank the stools away
and serve buffet-style right from
the island.

no tape measure. Theyre not perfect,
but I dont do perfection. If its perfect,
wheres the fun?
Im sorry, but this daybed swing on your
back patio actually is perfection.
It reminds me of our family summers
in the Adirondacks. We had daybed
swings made of canvas and horsehair,
and I wanted to bring that look south.
The cushion is simply covered with
a tablecloth, and I threw some random pillows on it. I dont care if it all
matches. I think fearlessness runs in
the family. In the late 60s, my grandmother Lillian Phipps had brown lacquered walls with pink sofas.
Sitting here on your living room sofa,
Im getting more and more comfortable with purple.
For me, this eggplant color is a neutral. It goes so well with green, and all
my pool towels are lime green. But I
also have a big love for red, the way the
tomato-soup red walls in the kitchen
glow at night. In fact, I like a little bit
of red in every room. There are red
lanterns in the powder room, and
Chinese-red lampshades in the dining room. I think a pop of red is a little
bit of heaven.
Would you call this place Liza Pulitzers
interpretation of Lilly Pulitzer style?
Actually, its a mix. When we were
kids, we spent a lot of time on Dads
boat in the Bahamasfishing and
diving, going from island to island.
Its a big part of me. Thats why we
have the pitched roofs, the louvers, the
ceiling fans, and painted wood oors
everywhere. They have that breezy,
barefoot, island feeling I adore. And

OLD STONE, RUSTIC WOODS, AND A MOODY

PALETTE GIVE A NEW HOUSE TIMELESS APPEAL

Interior design by J E A N N E T T E W H I T S O N

Interview by B A R B A R A K I N G

In Nashville, a new house with an old

soul merges indoors with outdoors.
On her front terrace, antiques
dealer Jeannette Whitson designed
a Charleston-inspired secret garden
enclosed by pear trees espaliered
on a trellis. An arched window adds
architectural interest. OPPOSITE:
The breakfast areas wall of windows
frames a view of the garden and
backs a 10-foot-long banquette and
century-old French pastry table.

BARBARA KING: Im abbergasted. You designed and

decorated your houseand youre self-taught?

JEANNETTE WHITSON: I didnt draw up the architectural plans. But its my vision all the way through,
executed by a lot of talented craftsmen. Im sure
I broke all the rules, but the good thing is, I dont
know its incorrect. Its more an emotional, organic
way of putting a house together. Somebody once
asked me what style it is, and I said, Think: an
Englishman whos come to America, married a
Pennsylvania Dutch woman, and has a French
mistress on the side in Charleston.
Im not thinking house, Im thinking epic Southern
romance novel.
Its just a fanciful description of all the dierent
inuences here. The architecture blends English
stone farmhouse with the patina of an old church
wall in Paris and a Pennsylvania Dutch barn.
I wanted it to look as if it were the original home on
the site. The kitchen is a mash-up of English scullery and French bakery. The entry is Charlestonstyle, where you rst walk through a street door
essentially youre still outsideand then through
the actual front doors. Throw into the mix Belgian
grays and American Impressionism. All the windowpanes are restoration glass, which has a waviness reminiscent of blown glass, and it made the
light a major design element. The windows refract
and disperse light in a painterly way that reminds
me of the Impressionist works my father collected.
I suppose I was subconsciously inuenced by the
style. It seems to be the benchmark for the soft,
moody tone of the interior.
Which explains why there are so few window treatments in the house.
Exactly. The light is moving and changing all day
long. Right now, for instance, theres a rosy glow
suusing all the rooms facing the back terrace.
Only the rooms facing the street have curtains or
shades: Views are part of the decoration.
And the decoration is part of the view.
There have been such advances in outdoor furniture and fabrics that you can now decorate the outside with the same degree of detail and comfort as
you do the inside. You can treat your immediate
surroundings as livable spaceour outdoor living room is where youll nd my family most of the
time. It was important to me that the house and
gardens be interconnected, that the inside meld
with the outside. The house wraps in a U shape and
embraces our back terrace. A whole wall of French

doors in the living room opens onto that terrace,

so it all becomes one space, a vanishing threshold.
Gardens play a big role in your life.
I bring the garden, and nature-related elements,
into everything I do. Its the basic tenet of my company, Garden Variety Design. I buy antique furniture and ornaments, mostly from France and
Belgium, but also some pieces from rural England, such as saddle-stone and trough sinks. For
the house, I made sure each entry door is through
a garden. In front is my secret gardenthats
another Charleston inspirationenclosed by a
wall of pear trees.
The pear trees almost look like outdoor sculptures.
The trunks and branches were espaliered into a
perfect trellis form by a man I call the Tree Whisperer. I love passing through that little space, but
the side kitchen door is the one we use the most.
You enter it through a vegetable garden.
And why wouldnt you want to use that door? Your
kitchen is so welcoming.
It marries well with the rest of the house. I dont
have any upper cabinets on the range wall because
its visible from the entertaining areas, and I
wanted it to blend seamlessly with the more formal spaces. Instead I use old French brass-andglass standing bakery shelves. All the counters are
Calacatta marble. The table in the breakfast area
is an antique marble pastry table I found in the
south of France. That 100-year-old marble reminds
me that nicks, cuts, stains, and mishaps all come
together to create the most beautiful patina, so
dont sweat the small stu. In time, my counters
will end up looking like that table.
Did you have to make compromises anywhere?
You have to when you build a house. I wanted
antique wide-plank oors, but that was unrealistic for a house this sizeI needed 3,000 square
feet of material. I got an end run of commercial
wide-plank white oak for $3 a square foot and
had someone hand-brush it with a deep stain
a combination of coee and ebony. Thats the closest I could get to old plank ooring.
Is your house everything you hoped it would be?
Our family has never lived anywhere for more than
four years. Weve been in this house almost two
years now, and I think everyone is lying in wait to
see where we go next. But this is our forever house:
Its warm, its comfortable, and it has soul. We will
never part with it.

LEF T: An American Impressionist painting, a gift from Whitsons father, sets the palette for colors in the living
room. It hangs on a trifold panel above the fireplace; pull a knob, and the entire panelpainting and allfolds back
to reveal a flat-screen TV. The fireplace is faced with fieldstone found on the property. The wood surround was
copied from a mantel in Wynkoop House, an 18th-century stone dwelling in upstate New York that inspired some
of Whitsons architectural details. A Mercer coffee table from Restoration Hardware anchors the seating area.
Antique French armchairs were re-covered in cowhide. Walls and trim are painted Pavilion Gray by Farrow & Ball.

109

110

LEF T: Kitchen walls are sheathed in subway tiles like the French bakeries
I love, Whitson says. And I designed long, shallow drawers like those in old
English servants quarters. The nine-and-a-half-foot island is topped with
Calacatta marble and has a sink tted with a Waterstone Gantry faucet.
A custom steel hood is paired with a Lacanche range. TOP: The dining and living
areas are combined in one large room. Whitson hung two English street lanterns that were originally pole-mounted: I like to bring what would naturally
be found outside into the home. ABOVE: Linen skirting makes the butlers
pantry pretty while hiding two wine coolers and an 18-inch dishwasher.

rods and white backdrop,
Whitson gave her closet a more
luxurious look by painting it
Benjamin Moores Blue Dusk and
hanging her clothes on unlacquered brass rods. 3. A slatted

6. Antique bronze bird handles

a Chinese Chippendale

alone like a piece of art.

Because the library is small,

it lent itself to a rich jewel-box
treatment, Whitson says.
Woodwork is painted a deep,

Indian block fabric, Jasper.

A gravel courtyard on the back terrace denes the outdoor living room.
Crape myrtles form a ceiling over the
furniture: a Provence sofa and chairs
from Restoration Hardware, an antique
garden urn transformed into a coffee table, and vintage ceramic garden
stools. Its such a sheltered area, birds
like to nest in the trees, Whitson says.
Sometimes it feels like youre in an aviary. The terrace pavers are reclaimed
limestone from English sidewalks.

all these soft grays come from?

Theyre the shades

you see in a piece of driftwood
thats been weathered by the sun
and rain. They have a natural,
organic feel, and that suits this
beach house. Its a place where
the family can get away from
the hectic schedule of school and
work to just relax.
HEIDI PIRON:

Was the kitchen always this big?

No, we took down the walls

between the original kitchen, the
dining room, and a little oce
to combine them into one open
space. The homeowners didnt
need a dining room. Life here is
casual, with lots of friends and
extended family coming to stay.
The adults can eat at that ninefoot-long table while the kids
have their chicken nuggets at
the island.
Whats that beautiful stone on
the countertops?

Quartzite. Im always searching for something new. The

challenge is nding something
beautiful thats also durable, and
quartzite happens to be stronger than granite. I love all those
Calacatta marbles, but they
can stain, and they often chip,
usually around the sink.
Did you hone or polish it?

The slab I chose at the stone

yard was already polished, but
you can take it back down to
a honed nish. I like that softer,
chalkier look. And then my
fabricator sealed it. About once
a year, you should probably seal
it again as a preventive measurekind of like cleaning out
your gutters every spring.
Whats on the backsplash?

I was determined not to do white

tile. I thought, I cant do another
white kitchen. I have to nd
something to make it more interesting. Thats what prompted
the idea of gray in the rst place.
But waitisnt that white tile?

Yes. Sometimes the simplest

solution is the best. But originally I thought I would pull >>

out the colors in the quartzite

with gray-blue tile. I must have
tried 20 dierent shades, but
nothing was quite right. So
I ended up with white. To give
it a little twist, we put the gray
in the grout.
Whats dierent about the paint
on the cabinets? Its almost soft.

Thats because its milk paint,

which has the foggy gray of an
early summer morning before
the sun shines through. And then
we did a hand-brushed nish,
which gives you more depth and
texture. Its not perfectly at
and smooth. And the imperfections make it more interesting.
Whats the idea in the butlers
pantry? The materials change.

That was just a back hallway,

and we wanted to make it special.
The cabinets there are stained
instead of painted, to look like
old weathered wood. And the
granite countertop is a rich dark
brown with a leathered nish,
so it has some texture. Stains
just kind of blend in.
What is that backsplash?

Antiqued mirror. It opens up

the room but continues the
same color palette.
Why did you frame it, rather
than running it top to bottom?

I wanted to repeat that rectangular shape in the upper cabinets,

almost as if you popped out
the center panel and replaced it
with mirror.
Its an unexpected touch.

And it adds a little mystery to

a very practical space. Theres a
small sink that can be used for
prep, or the counter can be set
up as a bar during a party. I think
that helps take pressure o the
main room. The kids can get a
soda or you can rinse out a glass
without getting in the cooks
way. Its smart to have several
work zones in a kitchen. >>

CHRISTINE PIT TEL:

Brilliant ideaa passthrough shower!

You
can step in on the husbands side and step out
on the wifes. They each
have their own separate
bathroom, but instead of
doing two small showers, we did one big one,
to use the space we had
more eciently. Actually,
the wife ended up with
more real estateshe
also got the tub.

THOMAS CATAL ANO:

Why is it freestanding?

To make it more of a focal

point. The tub is the rst
thing she sees when she
walks in. We chose this
model because it feels
timelessnot too antique
and not too contemporary. And the curve of the
lip works well with the
curve of the arch. There
were arches like that all
through this 1940s house,
so I picked up that detail
and used it here. It softens the space and makes
it more feminine.
He and she get dierent
oor tiling. How come?

I wanted each space to

130

HOUSEBEAUTIFUL.COM

be individualized. He gets
a small mosaic, and she
gets a more expansive
pattern, because she
has the larger room. In
the tub area, I imagined
a eld and a border, like
on a rug, to make this
section feel like a room
within a room. I sketched
it out, and then the
interior designer, Chris
Benson, found the tiles.
CHRIS BENSON: I always
start with the oor and
work my way up. The
background is Calacatta
marble, with accents of
Lagos Blue, and that led
to the Calacatta marble
on the vanities.
I see that those have feet.

That makes them

more like discrete pieces
of furniture. On the wifes
side, the vanity is taller
and projects out; the
makeup table is lower
and topped with wood.
If I didnt break up the
line, it would start to take
on the proportions of
kitchen cabinetry.
CB: The wood also makes
the space feel older, as if
this bathroom could have
TC:

been part of the original

house. With wood, you
dont have such a cold
surface everywhere you
look, and the room doesnt
echo as much. Then we
painted everything white.
Im a stickler for white
bathrooms, especially for
women. When youre putting on makeup, you
want a white room. Save
the color for the towels.

SHE LIKE S

This bath oil, scented

with ginger and pine,
helps me relax and
unwind. I have sensitive
skin, and this really
seems to nourish it.

Any other tips to make the

room more functional?

Hand towels should be

readily available, not in
a drawer where you have
to pull it open to get them
out. Thats why we did
those towel holders
on either side of each mirror. And the bath towels
hang right by the tub. I
think towels should be at
your ngertips.

CB:

Is there anything you can

tell us about lighting?

Its very important to

have a well-lit mirror. Ill
often use sconces, so you
have light near your face.
And use white lightbulbs,
not yellowtheyre nicer
on your skin. That goes for
overhead lights too.

M A R K ET PL ACE

THE LAST
WORDS
plates are a must for me,
and Bongenres are the
best. Ive been hoarding
them for years and have
every possible color combination, size, and shape
in my favorite patterns.

Because alfresco dining

and drinkingis just more fun!
Take advantage of the season.

6. Nothing says summer more than cocktails on the terraceor

by the pool, on the porch,
at the beach, on the
lawn. And theres no
greater buzzkill than
cheesy faux crystal in
tacky colors. CB2s beautifully designed acrylic
vessels are thin, sleek,
and chic. But only handwash them, to preserve
their fabulosity.

had a place on my deck
for years, and its a

5. Sitting on a hard
bench causes fanny
fatigue, and lugging
cushions is a pain, so you
need a good outdoor fabric. Keep it simpleyou
dont want to compete
with nature. My favorite
color is Perennials 60009, a beautiful pale aqua
that works with everything, especially green.

7. Bamboo is a classic
motif, but dont overdo it:
A single element, like
atware, is all you need.

9. I have a French

tablecloth that
belonged to my mother.
Ive used it to disguise
old furniture and for
picnics in Central Park.
Its well-worn, but I
pull it out every summer
in anticipation of sunny
afternoons, f lowers,
and lots of wine.
