Mastering the art of understatement.

The difference is Gaggenau.

Unifying apparently contradictory elements is an art we master
to perfection. Our iconic design exudes an irresistible charisma even in its uncompromising minimalism. Like the new
ovens 200 series, here with oven, Combi-steam oven and
warming drawer. The stunning composition in Gaggenau
Anthracite, Metallic or Silver elegantly blends into every
interior design. Far from being opposites, statement and
understatement are united in perfect harmony.

ESSENTIAL editors letter

Welcome
to the June issue

Which is best? Gas or electricity? The debate

about the best cooking method has raged on
for years, but now thanks to myriad advances
in technology and design you no longer
have to choose just one. The new range
of Teppanyaki plates, deep fat fryers and
induction hobs may seem daunting, but
consider the possibilities for home cooking
and they look good, rather like having the
kitchen equivalent of a top racing car parked
neatly on your kitchen worktop (theoretically
speaking). Our appliance feature (p104),
separates the gimmicks from the must-have
new generation gadgets showing you how to
mix and match your own truly bespoke dream
hob. Its never been simpler to incorporate the
perfect elements to suit your individual
cooking style. And while were on the subject
of kitchen appliances, the humble microwave is often overlooked these days,
as there are so many entry-level models on the market. However, if youre
designing a new kitchen its worth considering a top-end built-in model
at the planning stage as this handy little gadget is a useful addition to
your bank of appliances, and a freestanding model on the worktop of a new
kitchen can ruin the clean lines and uncluttered feel of a room scheme.

17

Ive never really given much thought to kitchen utensils. I mean, a wooden spoon
is just that. Isnt it? After interviewing the globally successful and award-winning
Joseph brothers, I have begun to see these essential, yet taken for granted,
implements in a whole new light. Read our designer profile (p64) to discover
the twins amazing passion for problem solving using their rare artistic vision.

36

Our real case studies this month take us from a spectacular penthouse apartment
near the river in Chiswick (View From Above, p24) to a professional food stylists
kitchen in the Cotswolds (Yes Chef, p56) that has to double as a test kitchen
and a relaxing family home. Then turn to Cafe Society (p46) to see how one
designers creativity was ignited by a visit to a cafe in Belgium. So inspired was
she, that she snapped a picture on her mobile and headed back to the UK to
immediately find a company to help her realise her vision. The results are
impressive right down to unique bar stools, designed by the owner herself.
Enjoy the issue and dont miss our summer living edition next month.

pectacular views across the west London

skyline from a penthouse apartment was a
dream home as far as jewellery designer Hazel
Lawrence and partner Graham, a race horse
bloodstock manager, were concerned. Except
for one thing the kitchen. It felt dated and
dark with heavy granite surfaces, coloured cabinetry and no real
flow, recalls Hazel. The kitchen is situated on the mezzanine
level, underneath the curved roof of the four storey high building
and it quickly became top of the couples list of priorities for an
overhaul. We wanted to be able to enjoy the views and felt that
a kitchen with a lighter, cleaner, simpler and more natural feel,
inspired by our love of Scandinavian design, would make us
much more likely to be able to do that, says Hazel.
They began by restoring the natural oak floor throughout the
whole apartment, a conversion of a factory dating from the early
1900s and transformed into a modern living space fifteen years
ago. They also added a roughly textured exposed brick wall to
add character. We went to a lot of trouble to find a salvage yard
that had reclaimed London stock bricks originally from this
area, because they felt right and in keeping with the history
of the building, she says. Simple, off-white painted walls
completed the backdrop, ready for the new furniture. Following
up on a recommendation from the property manager in their
development, Hazel and Graham headed off to Halcyon Interiors,
The Alno Store. There wasnt a single kitchen in the showroom
that I didnt like, so I knew we were in the right place, says Hazel.
An all-white gloss design, chosen to maximise the effect of the
natural light that pours through the double height windows of
the living space, provides simple contrast with the warm tones
of the wood floor and newly installed reclaimed brick wall.
While Hazel says she appreciates the new design and easyto-use layout, it is the improved storage she really enjoys the
most. I now have 50 percent more storage, even though the
footprint of the furniture is the same, thanks to really
thoughtful and clever design with deep drawers and maximum
space inside the cupboards, she says. I can hide away all the
clutter, relax and really enjoy the space and the views. eKBB

DECORATIVE
ADDITIONS

The exposed brick wall was

added by Hazel and Graham
to enhance the character of
the space. The bricks were
sourced with meticulous
attention to detail from
Windsor Reclamation. The
couple made sure they used
London stock bricks from
the period of the original
Victorian factory building for
authenticity. The Siemens
appliances are housed in
mid-height units, rather than
tall ones, to reveal as much
of the brick wall as possible
and let the spectacular curve
of the ceiling be enjoyed

How did you create the

layout? In an open-plan
room with an entertaining
dining area, I think it is
important to create a layout
which flows from one zone to
the next. Here there are areas
for food storage, for washing
up, and an island for cooking.
I felt a bulky island would
have been too dominant in
the space, and almost the
only thing you would see as
you come up the stairs. This
island is neat and is softened
by its curved shape, and by
the floating end which
creates a lighter appearance.
Tell us about the
peninsula This acts as a
bridge between the cooking
and dining zones of the
room, making an informal
area for coffee or drinks (with
a wine fridge to hand), and

provides a serving area

close to the dining table.
What materials and
textures did you choose?
The streamlined and
handleless white lacquer
furniture is in keeping with
the light and simple look that
Hazel and Graham wanted,
and its glossy surface reflects
maximum light to enhance
the sense of space and
brightness. We used more
white for the Corian worktops,
adding curved shapes where
possible to echo the ceiling,
and for the glass splashback,
to create a cohesive look
and provide smooth contrast
to the rougher texture of
the brick wall. Its a
deliberately simple look
to allow the extraordinary
room and spectacular
views do the talking.

ll good things come to those who wait, so the saying goes, and its a maxim
that Kate Nicholson, for one, firmly believes in. We first saw this house four
years before we finally bought it, she recalls of her 1920s house in north
London. It wasnt big enough when we first looked around, so we bought
another house instead. But, after a while, we heard that the developer had
put in a loft conversion making it just the size of house we needed, so we
sold the other place and moved in as quickly as we could. It was perfect.
Well, almost. Kate shares her home with husband, Oliver, and children,
Emily, 18, Alice, 16, and twins Sam and Harriet, 12, and the hub of their busy
family life at home is the kitchen. The house is in a great location, and has
just the right amount of bedrooms and living space, but the kitchen was a problem
it just didnt work, she recalls. Although a new kitchen had been installed by the
developer, it had far too little storage space and work surface to function adequately.
It was so new that it seemed wasteful to throw out all the units and start again, so
I did try and work out how I could improve what was there, continues Kate. But,
after a while, I realised I would simply be throwing good money after bad.
It was interior designer, Nicole Haig of DNK Design, working on schemes for
the rest of the house, who suggested calling in kitchen design expert Chantel
Elshout. I loved the work that Nicole was doing in the other rooms and knew I
could trust her judgement, says Kate, and I was right. Chantel created a very clever
design, which is totally practical and functional, but also has a lovely calm and
restful feel, and a layout that flows so well with the rest of the house. After selling
and buying homes five times over recent years, do Kate and Oliver plan another
move? Never again, laughs Kate, It did feel horribly extravagant ripping out the
existing kitchen, but now I do think it was worth it. To have a design that works so
well and is such a pleasure to be in makes a success of the whole house. eKBB

How did you create the

layout? The key to the new
design was to introduce an
island. The original layout
had units in a horseshoeshape around the room,
but nothing in the centre
of the space. By introducing
an island, we could link the
three sides of the room and
create a much more sociable
space for cooking. There
are bar stools for the
children or for friends to sit
and chat to Kate while she is
preparing dinner, and it adds
lots more work surface too.
What was your next step?
We decided to replace an old
fireplace on the wall opposite
the windows with open
shelving, designed for
displaying pretty crockery
and glassware, with a large

storage and larder

cupboard in the alcove
adjacent. This provides a huge
amount of storage space,
which was badly needed in
the room, but it doesnt feel
obtrusive because it is
recessed into the wall.
How did you choose the
colours and finishes?
Although the kitchen is cleanlined, modern and minimal in
design, we didnt want it to
look stark, so we chose a soft
shade of taupe in a satin
finish for the cabinetry,
teaming it with a lightly
speckled Snow white work
surface. The colours blend
together beautifully, and
create quite a sophisticated
feel, and they work well with
the oak floor to create a
warm and inviting effect.

Caf
society
Inspired by a visit to a caf in Belgium, the
Haynes family kitchen combines a palette
of grey, limestone and ebony-stained oak to
create a room where friends love to hang out

PICTURES DARREN CHUNG

I WORDS AMELIA THORPE

tepping into a pretty caf in Bruges, Kate Haynes was

instantly inspired. I fell in love with the classic Belgian
grey palette of colours, mixed with natural oak and
limestone, she recalls. I took a quick picture on my
phone and started to think about how I could interpret
the look in my kitchen at home. As a property developer
and designer, Kate is experienced at responding to all sorts
of home-related challenges, but she admits that the renovation of her
recently acquired Victorian house in Hammersmith represented an even
more daunting task than normal. It was an absolutely huge project,
she says, with feeling. It wasnt quite derelict, but almost. Someone had
been living there before we bought it, but I honestly dont know how.
Determined to create an inviting and spacious family home to share
with husband, Ed, and baby son Jake, Kate set to work. At some time
in the dim and distant past, the house had been divided into four flats,
so all the partitions had to come out to put back the property, and she
and Ed decided to add a three storey extension to boost the size of the
interior in the process. At the heart of the home was to be a large
kitchen family room with space to relax, as well as to entertain friends.
With phone and picture in hand, Kate set off to meet Tim Higham,
Director and owner of bespoke British-made kitchen company,
Higham Furniture, with whom she had worked on previous projects.
I knew that if anyone could make sense of my Belgian idea, Tim
could, laughs Kate. Together they began to develop plans for cleanlined cabinetry with elegant detailing, including glazed wall cabinets,
all painted in Kates favourite grey-white seen in the pretty caf.
A three and a half metre-long island forms the focal point of
the room, its scale designed to complement the expansive size of
the room. Topped with limestone to match the tones of the grey
stone floor, the look is classic but not cold. An ebony-stained oak
breakfast bar adds warmth. I like the way Tim blended the best of
traditional ideas with modern, clean lines, says Kate. It has a light,
welcoming feel and I guess its success can be measured by the
fact that everyone always wants to hang out in here. eKBB

The furniture needed to be in

that Kate wanted something
traditional, so I proposed classic,

add interest, but again, they arent
fussy. And the glazed wall
cabinets are inspired by the

he kitchen is often the heart of the home, but when

you are a food stylist like Joy Parker, it is also the
room in which you spend most of your time. My
kitchen is very important to me, because it is where I
work, where we entertain and where we eat as a family,
says Joy, who creates and tests recipes and styles food
photography for magazines, advertising and packaging.
After living in their Gloucestershire Cotswold stone house for
twelve years, Joy and company director husband, James, decided
to extend their home to make room for a much larger kitchen
to replace the existing pretty small space. The decision was
prompted by some good fortune. We were able to buy a four
acre paddock next to the house, which gave us more land and
some lovely views to enjoy from the kitchen, recalls Joy.
The new kitchen is about three times the size of the old, so
Joy was surprised when the first kitchen companies she consulted
suggested not much change from the original layout, with simply
a dining table in the new space. Then she met Jason Shephard of
Kitchen Architecture. I was immediately struck by how he looked at
the whole space and proposed a radically different layout, she says.
The focus of the room is now a super-size island. It gives me a
huge amount of work surface, and theres enough space all around
it to get cameras, lighting and models into the room, says Joy.
Clean, crisp and contemporary in style, the furniture is softened
by a palette of muted tones and accents of walnut. It doesnt
shout, and suits the mellow stone of the building, she says.
When daughter Beckie, 25, is home from her knitwear design
job in New York, and son Ben, 22, who has just set up a film
production company, join Joy and James for dinner, or when
friends pop by, theres room for everyone to relax. We love
entertaining and I never cook anything twice Im always
testing my recipes on my friends, she laughs. And this room
has transformed my cooking enjoyment. eKBB

Tell us about the layout

It was important to keep
it as simple as possible,
to make a comfortable
living space as well as
somewhere for Joy to
work. The island in its
purist form is a kitchen
work bench with a sink
and hob, and this one is
extra-large at four metres
long to provide lots of
work space. It is also in
proportion to the size of
the room, and forms the
focus of the space. The
tall cabinets along the
wall are designed as
simple blocks of

functional furniture, which

look far more elegant than
endless units that wrap
around the room.
What was the
biggest challenge?
Joy and James wanted a
contemporary, clean-lined
kitchen which would sit
comfortably in a country
Cotswold stone home.
We all agreed that
anything too white and
clinical just wouldnt work.
Instead, we chose softer
earthy colours and used
matt finishes for the
cabinetry, with its warmth

accentuated by the
walnut veneer breakfast
bar and baking cupboard.
And the secret to the
success of the room?
At one stage there was
to be a supporting column
in the middle of the
room, but we all worked
together with the
structural engineer to
get that removed and
replaced by a steel joist
in the ceiling. It was more
expensive and tricky, but it
has been vital in ensuring
the really open and
spacious feel of the room.

A I think that having a good idea of
where you stand in a company is
important, especially if youre brothers
as it can lead to fewer disagreements.
What contributed most to your success?
A We have a clear idea of the brand and
where we want it to go with it, which is
important. Not being swayed by fads or
crazes and staying true to the ethos we have
always had which is function and form.
R We have also learned from our
mistakes, and that is something that
people forget, it is important in order
to know where to go next.
What do you aim to achieve in design?
A We like to think that we solve problems
that people never knew they had.
R Yes, we want to create something that
functions perfectly but also looks good.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
A Everywhere! Sometimes its as simple as
someone saying wouldnt it be great if
to get the creative cogs whirring. We spend
hours in the kitchen looking for loose
ends to tie up, but out of every 100 ideas
only 20 or so will see the light of day.

INTERIOR DESIGNER

Kitchen
A family kitchen is given the country treatment to enhance
the restful feel that extends throughout this Sussex home

his mellow and relaxing kitchen has been created for a beautiful country house in
Sussex, which is primarily a weekend family retreat, so needed to be an environment
for low key living. Very young children demanded a family-friendly attitude to the
interiors and the owners wanted a quiet approach that enhanced the natural elements
of the surrounding countryside. The kitchen was part of an entire house design, where the
serene colour scheme continues seamlessly throughout the property - most rooms connecting
to the kitchen, which literally is the central element of the home. Subtle hints of pattern in
the soft furnishings add personality and interest without being overwhelming. Textiles have
also been used to contribute to the feeling of comfort and warmth, still projecting a sense of
calm. The wood panelling on the island is mirrored in the intimate banquette seating area
which perfectly fills an awkward corner, as if it has always been there. Solid oak has been
used on the island worktop as a further reminder of the rustic country location, but has been
stained a dark colour both for contrast and practicality. Glazed cabinets in the kitchen area
introduce a reflective quality, and add to the feeling of light and space. Although clearly
English country style, there appears to be soft Scandinavian and North East US coastal
influences in the overall scheme, but ultimately this is a kitchen that perfectly fulfils the brief:
a family home, a great place to cook for friends and somewhere to relax and rejuvenate.

What was your inspiration behind the kitchen

design? This kitchen very much reflects the
aspirations of our client to have a stylish yet familyfriendly place for relaxed weekend living. It is also
both timeless and practical, and in keeping with the
existing architecture of the property.
What are your favourite features of the kitchen?
The banquette seating, which is a clever way
of introducing a very relaxed and interactive
dining space to the kitchen.

How did you inject the client's personality? The

design really was based on how they wanted to live,
with the kitchen as the hub of the home, so its very
personal from that perspective. Stylistically, the

How did you set about creating the layout

in this room? The kitchen was very important
to our client, it is the heart of the home literally
in this case as all the other rooms are off it. The
large island creates a social space for the family,
whilst being practical for cooking. We kept the
space open to enable great flow into the adjoining
rooms. The existing layout allowed us to create an
informal dining space by the window, so breakfast
can be enjoyed with the garden views.
How important was maximising light and space?
The space has great natural light and views to the
garden, therefore we chose an off-white paint
colour to keep it fresh and enhance the airy feel.
Cleverly concealed recessed lighting and pendants
create moody, soft light for the evening.
The seating area is quite intimate for a kitchen what led you to include this area? The banquette
seating enables the family to eat together without it
being too formal. For larger gatherings, the banquette
provides the children with their own space to relax
while the adults are seated at the adjacent dining table.

n all the excitement and planning thats

involved in a new kitchen, dont lose
sight of the fact that you will still need
a kitchen table and chairs. Its worth
factoring this into your budget from the
start as this important decorative feature
can represent a considerable investment.
Were all fans of the kitchen island, which nowadays
features in most new kitchen layouts and especially
those in a conservatory-style extension. However,
unless it includes a dropped surface specifically
designed as a dining area, an island cant replace the
family table. A home still needs a table that can be used
to host a birthday tea, Sunday lunch or formal dining.

Natural Finish
A natural timber finish, whether its veneered or solid
wood is a smart choice, especially in a busy family
home. Weve moved on from the days of polished
mahogany dining tables dressed with a cloth and the
style now is very much more relaxed, with a bare wood
table being perfectly acceptable for casual and formal
dining. Of course, protect the table from hot serving
dishes and plates, but try not to worry too much over
the inevitable marks that will accumulate with daily
use. The more rustic the style, the less you need to
fuss over daily wear and tear. Oak works beautifully
for these styles, with a waxed or oiled finish which
can be restored as necessary. Antique-hunters should
keep an eye out for old, farmhouse-style pine tables,
the more worn and distressed the better create a
unique scheme by contrasting old and new, and team
it with colourful modern chairs or faux period styles,
such as the iconic clear acrylic Ghost chair by
Philippe Starck inspired by Louis XV style.

On the Bench
Its a good idea to invest in a pair of benches if you
regularly host big dinner parties they can often be
tucked away beneath the table when not needed or
if the table is moved against a wall. Match the length
of the bench to the length of the un-extended table,
and buy pairs of chairs to cover either end of the table
plus the extra space provided when its extended.

SPLIT PERSONALITY

Muutos new Split Table by

Swedish designer Staffan

tables are not quite so on-trend as they have been in

the past few years, but are suited to many new glazed
extensions, adding emphasis to the light/space/
transparency theme. Always check that the glass used
is tempered or safety glass (which is up to five times
stronger than standard untreated glass, and which
will break into harmless rounded fragments in the
case of an accident). For that reason, avoid buying
glass tables from antique or vintage shops or
auctions, as you dont know the provenance of the
glass. If you really love the frame/trestle/legs,
consider replacing the glass with modern, safe, glass.
Ligne Roset have a new ceramic table-top material,
Seram, which is recyclable, eco-friendly, resistant to
heat, chemicals and UV so could be a good choice
for dining areas in a sunny, glazed extension.

The Practicalities
Be aware of measurements and scale what looks
like a perfectly average-sized table in a spacious
shop or showroom could be far too big for the
dining area at home. Make paper templates for the
table and chairs, and put into position on the floor
to see what the moving around space is, and whether
the chairs fit under the table neatly. Splayed chair
legs take up more space, which may not make a
huge difference, but in a long table with pedestal
legs it could be the difference between an extra chair
or not for either side of the table. Dont forget to
allow enough space for the extending leaves to be
used comfortably. For chairs, try to choose fabric
seat covers that can be removed for cleaning, or
perhaps stick to non-fabric designs. eKBB

Has the strong trend for open

plan kitchens with islands
changed peoples purchases?
Yes, people are buying big, striking
dining tables. And because of the
single living area concept, tables
need to be very robust and fit for
all occasions eating at one end
and children doing homework at
the other end by day, and smart
enough for a dinner party by night.
What is your most successful
shape/size of table?
Everybody loves an oval. Its a very
communal shape, non-hierarchical
and aesthetically pleasing.

What is your best buying

advice? If you buy a dining table
from us it's going to last you for
the rest of your life; so while it
might be expensive it is an
investment for the future.
Its something you might be
interacting with every day of your
life, so is an emotional investment
as well as a financial one.
Which tabletop material is
the most hardwearing?
We sell a lot of glass and a lot of
oak tables and it depends on use
and lifestyle. They both have
advantages and disadvantages.
Glass is quite high maintenance
it needs to be polished regularly to
look its best. Oak is a very hard

Singing
in the rain
Dornbracht has revealed its latest innovative
kitchen and bathroom products. First up is the
eUnit, an electronic solution for the sink area that
optimises everyday tasks using technology to
assist with dispensing water, regulating flow and temperature and
operating the plug. Due to be released later this year, the newly
developed foot sensor will be a key player, allowing total hands-free
control and minimal hygiene risks. The SmartWater device is what
controls the temperature and flow and has been designed for both
kitchen and bathroom use. It is an easy pairing of dial and display.
You will have heard claims of the ultimate showering experience
before, but Sensory Sky is inspired by weather phenomena and the
moods of nature. Incorporating these into a unique bathing experience
designed to feel as if you are showering in open air, it uses three
scenarios READJUST, RELEASE and REJOICE, to create the special
features of rain, fog, light and fragrance. However, youre not
restricted to these programmes spray heads, nozzles, light and
fragrance can all be separately adjusted. It is due to be available in two
different finishes (brushed or high-gloss stainless steel) from autumn
this year. Its a bit early for confirmed prices, but expect to pay around
10,000 for eUnit and 20,000 for Sensory Sky. dornbracht.com.

ESSENTIAL top chef

MY FAVOURITE KITCHEN APPLIANCE

Paul

AINSWORTH
Top chef Paul Ainsworth tells us why he loves the
iconic KitchenAid Stand Mixer and the moment he
found out he had won a coveted Michelin star
What makes the KitchenAid mixer so
special for you? You would look at it sitting
there in the kitchen and think OK thats a
smart mixer, but its so much more than
what you see on the Great British Bake Off.
Its got so many uses its unbelievable. Dont
take this understated bit of kit for granted.

What are your favourite things to use the

mixer for? The KitchenAid mixers are in
constant use in our restaurants. Theyre used
to prepare elements of all dishes from start to
finish. From the light and creamy smoked cod
roe or the lightly whipped Cornish butter we
serve with our fresh bread, to the pats and
terrines of the starters. Theyre essential
for baking and creating desserts, crumbles
and nut mixtures. Theres rarely a time that
there isnt a mixer churning something.

How is it to use for the first time? Really

easy. Its so sturdy and strong there are no
fiddley bits. I guarantee youll have it for the
rest of your life and use it practically daily.
Would you still have chosen this if you
werent a professional chef ? Most definitely.
Even if I simply enjoyed cooking as an
amateur, I would have to have this product.

FEATURE LEIGH-ANNE ROBERTS

Whats your favourite dish on the No. 6

menu at the moment? Im loving them all
so thats a hard question! Each dish is unique
in its own style and goes through weeks of
development and testing. At the moment,
Im most intrigued by our new surf and turn
dish loin of Cornish monkfish with bone
marrow, sour cream and a veal shin salad.

How did it feel when No. 6 was awarded its

first Michelin star last year? Pure euphoria.
It was the biggest surprise ever because we
received the news a week early from our
friend, Simon Hulstone, in Torquay. Ill never

102 ekbbmagazine.co.uk

forget that moment my wife, Emma, burst into

tears. I phoned my friends Tom Kerridge and
Sat Bains to find out what to do. We rang
Michelin who confirmed the news for us.
It is up there as one of the most amazing
moments not just in my career, but of my life.

Whats your favourite dish to cook at

home? A great quality piece of beef. I enjoy
cooking a really nice steak with chips, grilled
tomatoes and a bearnaise sauce to go with it.
I love creating simple things on my day off.

What do you think will be the next big

thing in appliances? Thats hard to say. I
use some modern technology in my kitchens
like water baths and paco jets, but were less
fussed at cooking each leek at 48.5 degrees
for the sake of molecular gastronomy; its
simply to ensure each dish is consistent for
our guests. Predicting the future of modern
commercial kitchens, I like the idea of
centrifuge machines. This kit has a mixing
bowl attachment that spins the chosen
ingredient so fast it splits into the basic
elements. Sat Bains demonstrated with a bar
of chocolate. It broke up into the four masses
that makes the bar up: fat, cocoa butter, bits
of solid cocoa and milk. I thought that was
really cool and I could see how that could
make food interesting. Daniel Clifford told
me that he spins pineapple and uses the juice
that comes out in sorbet incredibly fresh
and as true to the flavour as it can be.

What are your plans for the future?

To keep No. 6 100 per cent consistent to a
Michelin star standard so every customer
receives an extraordinary experience. We aim
to develop and improve all the time, while
staying true to what we believe in. For Rojanos
in the Square, I want to make the best of that
casual dining experience, creating fast food
with great Cornish ingredients. eKBB

ESSENTIAL HOBS

ith the popularity

of TV cooking
shows such as
MasterChef and
Great British Menu,
we are becoming
much more
experimental with our own food. Inviting guests
for dinner is now an opportunity to show off
these growing skills and the new pieces of
enviable kit we are investing in. Once upon a time
the available options for the hob were pretty
dismal gas or ceramic? Those days are over and
not only can you now choose from a wealth of
high quality brands, innovations such as induction,
wok burners and teppanyaki plates make for a
much more exciting culinary experience.

ELECTRIC, GAS OR INDUCTION?

With the advent of Domino hobs small
specialist hobs that can be used in combination
you no longer have to choose one cooking
method over another, and can mix and match to
your hearts content. But deciding upon your
preferred main cooking method is still a good
place to start. Gas is perfect for those who like
to be able to see the heat and an instant
reaction when using the controls. Ceramic
electric plates are ideal if you dont have access
to a gas supply, many include safety features
such as a child lock and highlight zones that
glow to show the areas that are still hot.
If you still havent decided, perhaps induction is
your method of choice. Said to have the
responsiveness of gas with the convenience of
ceramic, it works using a magnetic field between
the hob and the pan. This creates instant heat
on the pan itself, leaving the surface cool. It uses
25% less energy, but they do tend to be more
expensive and require special pots and pans.

SIZE MATTERS
When creating the cooking area of your dreams,
be realistic about the amount of space available.
Although domino modules are typically smaller
than standard hobs, built-in depths are likely to
be larger for induction woks where
the concave heat zone sits below the worktop
level. This is an equally important point for fryers
too. Size does matter, and making sure that
the layout works for your kitchen and the
way you cook is vital if, for example you
are planning to use the teppanyaki plate and
induction hob at the same time, its best
not to arrange them at either end of your layout
so that you are having to move up and down
the worktop to check on the food. When it
comes to installation, the dimensions we have
given are for the product itself, the space in
which it fits will need to be smaller so that you
can having the stunning stainless steel overlap
proudly displayed unless of course you have
opted for a flush-fitted design. eKBB

hile freestanding microwaves may

not offer much excitement in the
way of cooking, the latest built-in
models make perfect partners for
an existing single or double oven.
If you opt for a combination model,
you can do far more than youd expect you may find
its the ultimate space-saving appliance for todays
hardworking kitchen. For instance, did you know that in
a combination microwave you can cook and brown a 3lb
chicken in just 18 minutes, cook a rich fruit cake in 30
minutes and a cupcake in less than a minute? They can
also be used for proving and baking bread, drying a piping
bag, warming lemons for zesting and even baking apples.

ADDED BENEFITS
For a time it was only considered that microwaves
could be used for just heating up and defrosting,
confirms Neil Pooley, Kitchen Category Manager at
Miele. But with a wide range of options now available
including fan grilling, full grilling, fan heat and
conventional heat, a microwave is a valuable asset
to have in the kitchen. Combination microwave ovens
have increased in popularity, as they offer traditional
cooking functions, using conventional heating
methods, as well as microwave energy, saving you
up to about 30% more time compared to the time
it takes to prepare a meal using conventional heat
alone. Using a combination microwave means that
your dish is cooked with microwave heat and browned
under the grill at the same time, so dishes such as
tray bakes are quicker and easier to prepare but
still come with a softer centre and crispy top.

Make sure you choose the right model for your needs,
as there are so many different features and functions
available. Vic Sinclair, Buyer for Large Electrical Appliances
at John Lewis, says, Benefits of premium models include
easy cleaning thanks to Pyrolytic cleaning systems,
which raise the temperature inside the microwave to
around 500C, carbonising any grease and fat and making
it easy to wipe away. Some ovens come with steam
cooking to retain vitamins, nutrients, texture and taste.
Others offer automatic functions to set the ideal
temperature and cooking conditions for a dish; memory
functions so you can save your own recipes and multiple
sequence cooking, which allows the microwave to be set

TRENDS
Change how your bathroom meets your
needs simply by playing with app-cessories
FEATURE LEIGH-ANNE ROBERTS

he way we use our bathroom can change in an instant

why should that mean another redesign? Villeroy & Boch
has created the perfect solution with Joyce, a new bathroom
collection for 2013 that gives you the choice on how to
transform the way everything looks to suit your mood and meet
your needs. The complete range includes ceramics such as the basin,
bathroom furniture for handy storage and Apps. Whats that you
ask? Apps are the latest specially designed accessories that allow
you to to play with the form, colour and storage in your bathroom.
They are available in a wealth of variations including dishes, vases
for flowers or fragrance sticks, and a soap dish. You can stack
them, add dividers and lids plus they are available in three
different heights and colours Peru, Sahara and Bali for a
truly interchangeable scheme that is as individual as you are.
Designed by Annette Maria Sonntag, the Joyce collection offers two
different door fronts for the furniture, designed to be flush with your
basin for a clean, undisturbed feel. Following on with sleek lines, the
Joyce SlimSeat WC won the internationally recognized product red
dot design award for 2013, furthering the slender wall-hung layout
and practical everyday use of the bathroom. The innovative theme
behind Joyce is the ability to change and change again the way your
bathroom looks and how you use it. Villeroy & Boch offer an online
configurator so that you can see all the possible combinations that
can be created. The fun doesnt stop there. Joyce grows as we do
and two more colours are set to be available from next year. eKBB

ESSENTIAL f itted baths

Warm, water-resistant and tactile,

this beautiful, handmade teak bath is
finished with a PU lacquer for added
durability and includes two backrests
for supreme comfort. Part of a recent
project in a Dorset farmhouse, the
simple, pared-down earthiness suits
any period of house and is echoed
by the teak veneer wall tiles.
Geo teak double bath,

e it a handsome roll-top or a sleek,

limestone oval, the freestanding bath may
still be flying high, but lets not forget todays
generation of beautiful, built-in tubs. Because lets face
it, not everyone has a ballroom-sized bathroom, and
fitted baths offer a flexible, practical solution when it
comes to space constraints and can easily be topped
off with a shower facility to boot. Modern offerings
are also shrugging off their humdrum reputation to
become stunning and striking focal points in their own
right while utilising that awkward corner or wasted
alcove at the same time. Plump for a fitted bath and
youll not only maximise every last millimetre of floor
space, but unsightly plumbing is fully concealed by
your choice of panelling, from luxurious dark wenge
and beautiful stone to iridescent mosaics and even
silver leafing. Its an extra pop of texture, material
and colour that will create a truly one-off design
statement while taps can be mounted on the wall for
a neat, streamlined finish freeing up ledge space.
While the freestanding tub generally takes the
form of a traditional rectangle, built-in versions
maybe have the edge when it comes to shape and
size, offering everything from sunken circular
designs kitted out with whirlpools, long, linear
troughs big enough for two, deep, boxy plunge pools
and even a heart-shaped model, from luxury
bathroom emporium, Bathrooms International.
Baths can sit either under or over the surface with
say a marble or limestone surround, sited against
one wall to cut-down on mess and splashes or
panelled in for a handsome, sophisticated look.
Modern acrylic baths are lightweight, easy to
keep clean and reinforced for extra strength while
composite versions, mixing acrylic and quartz, are
super-durable, flexible and far lighter than cast iron.
These solid surface baths might be pricier but they
can be carved into almost any design, in any colour,
keep the bath water warm for longer, have a silkysmooth touch and can even be repaired if they get
scratched or damaged. Look out too for solid stone
and cast iron (but do take into account weight
issues) plus enamelled steel and wood.
A built-in bath may form part of a bespoke
bathroom project, where all the furniture is handmade
to your specification and features such as lighting and
clever hidden storage can all be worked into the
blueprint. So, whether it's a velvet-smooth block of
beautiful teak or a glamorous, Art-Deco-style marble
bath slightly raised and accessed with elegantly tiled
steps (we all love a bit of Great Gatsby chic) the
built-in bath is definitely here to stay... eKBB

ESSENTIAL bedside tables

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Curling up in bed with a good book and a cup

of tea is one of lifes simple but enjoyable
pleasures. To do it comfortably, a bedside table
or cabinet is an absolute must. The type you
choose comes down to how much you need to
store next to your bed. If its a minimalist list,
then a table with just enough room for a light,
a water flask and clock might be enough. A
small chest of drawers offers more potential for
storing things like night lotions and spare
reading material or, if space is at a premium in
the rest of the bedroom, a larger three-drawer
chest for clothes is the right option. To stow
away spare bedding, a designer trunk could be
the answer. The style factor obviously comes
into play too add vintage character with one
of the retro wooden bedsides or simple
contemporary cutting edge panache with a
clean-edged design in glossy or matt lacquer.
Period bedsides, in glass or mirror and chrome
or stainless steel lend an elegant deco look
while pretty painted French style tables with
shapely legs add gentle countryfied charm.

ESSENTIAL interview

Cath
KIDSTON
We uncover this iconic designers inspiration
and true love of vintage and nostalgic prints
INTERVIEW SUSAN SPRINGATE

I PICTURES PIA TRYDE AND AKEMI KUROSAKA

Twenty years after starting out in

what she describes as a glorified junk
shop, Cath Kidston has become a
household name. Since setting up
her own interiors business and then
opening her first shop in 1993, she
has created an iconic British brand
with stores all over the UK and as
far afield as Japan and Thailand.
She specialises in nostalgic prints
and homewares and as well as her
distinctive designs featuring her
motif roses, sailing boats and cowboys
her range includes everything from
shopping bags and phone cases to
ironing board covers and fabrics.
Sometimes known as the new
Laura Ashley, Kidston has an idyllic
country retreat in Gloucestershire
and a Thames-side home in West
London, which she shares with
her partner Hugh Padgham.
Do you see an end to our obsession
with modern vintage? I dont see that
peoples love of modern vintage will
end. Only trends and fads end.
Combining a nod to nostalgia with
something that is practical for today
will always be surprising and fun.
Where do you find inspiration? I find
inspiration everywhere whether its
from my travels, visiting favourite
vintage shops and antiques markets
or everyday things. The nursery style
I grew up with has been a particular
influence I can still vividly
remember the gloss paint, coloured
formica worktops and the rosebud
curtains from my bedroom. The
Cath Kidston look is like a modern
update of the style I grew up with.
What is your home like is it a shrine
to all things modern vintage? I have
a lot of vintage and antique pieces but
I also really like modern design. I love

traditional English style but people

are sometimes surprised by the fact
that my taste is actually quite diverse.
I really like Scandinavian design,
graphic modern art and Eastern
textiles, and Ive used a lot of bright
colours and prints at home that might
not be considered typically English.
Its all about creating a cheerful,
comfortable atmosphere and feel.
Bathrooms can be very boring any
ideas? Using print on the side of a
bath looks really cool and unexpected.
It was a picture of a bathroom that
inspired me 20 years ago when I
started the business. There was a
vintage rose print on the side of the
bath and glossy paint on the armoire.
I call this my Eureka moment.
Tell us about the 20th birthday
collection We created the collection to
go alongside my new book Coming
Up Roses - the story of our growing
business. Theres a selection of home
office stationary thats cheery and fun
and a range of accessories. The prints
used are our classic prints, Red Spot
and Antique Rose, which was the
first Cath Kidston print and is a
firm favourite with our customers.
Your designs have adorned
everything from computer covers
to tents. Whats next? At the moment,
Im really excited about a new
Stanley bouncy ball for kids.
Finally, which designers have
influenced you? I was always
influenced by interior decorators like
David Hicks and Nancy Lancaster as
they had such confidence in their own
style and interesting, unfussy taste. I
also love Kenzo for his use of colour
and I have huge admiration for Paul
Smith for his wit and style. eKBB
