and are now looking for a further qualification?

Are you creative, flexible, and looking for new
challenges?
Are you tempted by international studies and
want to have internationality as an active part
of your study programme?
If so, then look no further! We're definitely right
for you!
The entire Master's programme is held in
English. We have long-standing experience in
international study programmes.
Based on a German/European seven-semester
(= three and a half years) Bachelor of Science
programme (equivalent to 210 European Credit
Transfer System (ECTS) credits), you have the
chance to earn an internationally acknowledged
Master of Science degree in three semesters
(one and a half years, 90 ECTS).
Note: credits gained in study programmes are
not directly comparable worldwide. The
qualification outcome may also differ from
country to country, even though the
programmes may have the same "name". So it
may be the case that even a four-year foreign
degree may not be equivalent to a three-and-ahalf-year German degree.
Two specialisations are provided:
"DESIGN" (= development and design)
In international business, you can only survive
by proactively facing challenges and managing
the future yourself. The development of
successful products and solutions for the market
is one of today's key technologies - one of the
major foundations for a strategic market
position for industry in the future. This is why
the specialisation "Design" focuses on teaching
a philosophy of "thinking beyond horizons and
limitations", and targeting application
technology that meets all relevant requirements
- technical, social, and environmental.
"MATERIAL"
Materials have always played an important role
in the development of technologies: they still
are and will remain a key element in the
successful orientation of mechanical
engineering in the future. Until now, there has
been permanent and progressive growth in the
area of polymers and ceramics. These materials
have replaced classical metals in machines and
technical equipment in many ways. The
improved components are lighter and simpler to
manufacture. By using new technologies,
solutions are created that have never been
thought of before. Therefore, this specialisation
focuses on polymers and ceramics.
Educational
organisation
The programme begins primarily in the summer
semester (March).

It is also possible to start the programme in the

winter semester (September): in this case
students will start with the content of the
second semester. The topics from the first
semester are taken by the students in the
following summer semester.
The Master's programme consists of three
semesters:
- The first semester provides fundamental
information such as Mechanics of Solids,
Engineering Mathematics, Materials Science,
etc.
- The second semester offers further
specialisation, especially in the two profiles
Design and Materials.
- The third semester offers the Master's project
and the Master's thesis.
The programme places a strong emphasis on
the central role played by design both in
innovation and in the integration of the
engineering disciplines. Design is not only
taught in this way, but is also practised in this
manner in research activities, both explicitly and
implicitly. Explicitly, for example, through
research in virtual reality, and implicitly through
the design of heart-assistance devices,
reconstruction of parts of the human body,
vehicle components, together with apparatus for
experiments and demonstration, to name but a
few examples.
Study abroad unit(s)
"International Design Engineer (IDE)"
The programme "Master in Mechanical
Engineering" provides something special for
participants in Luebeck: you can decide to
spend a study period abroad. One of the foci is
on interaction between the students, their
university and industry. This part of the study
programme is coordinated with our international
partner universities, e.g. concerning its
curriculum. It provides the choice of special
subjects and classes at our partner universities
in the second or third semester. You will also
have the possibility of carrying out the Master's
project and thesis in an international student
team in a country outside Germany.
Forms of assessment

Course objectives
This Master's programme in Mechanical
Engineering offers exposure to applied and
scientific engineering philosophy whilst
simultaneously enabling students to broaden
and/or deepen their knowledge of certain
engineering disciplines, which - for the most
part - have been chosen on the basis of the
research strengths of Luebeck University of
Applied Sciences
.
The Master of Science degree provides
graduates with the technical understanding and
skill sets required to lead integrated projects
through interfacing with engineers and
technicians in other disciplines. The
international exchange part of the programme
provides sound experience in international
collaboration and helps students gain an
understanding of different cultural aspects.
Tuition fees
No tuition fees are currently charged.
Enrolment fees
All students must pay a semester fee (this
includes the fee for the semester ticket for local
public transport as well as the fee for the AStA
(Student Council)). The fee is currently approx.
100 EUR.
Costs of living
Approx. 750 EUR per month to cover personal
expenses. Additional information about living
expenses and other relevant information can be

. Choose the English version by clicking the
respective language button; look for "Service".
Job opportunities
Limited by visa and individual language skills.
As a full-time student, time to work is very
limited and taking a part-time job is not
recommended.
Language
requirements
Good knowledge of the English language is
required in order to follow lecture modules.

One of the following criteria has to be fulfilled in

order to demonstrate sufficient English
proficiency:
- English was the official language during school
education
- At least five years continuous language lessons
in English during school education
- A stay in an English-speaking country of at
least six months during a study programme or
as a working stay
- English was the official language of the study
programme qualifying for the Master of Science
Mechanical Engineering
- Internationally accepted language test in
English (for example TOEFL test) according to
CEFR (Common European Framework of
References for Language) "Independent user"
B2 or similar)
Fulfilment of the criteria must be proven.

About the university
Luebeck University of Applied Sciences
(Fachhochschule Lbeck) is proud of its 180year history. The campus is situated in the
south of Luebeck. Once on campus, all buildings
are within walking distance.
Luebeck is a historical city founded in the Middle
Ages and located 60 km north-east of Hamburg.
Luebeck University of Applied Sciences was
founded in 1808. In 1969 the government of
Schleswig-Holstein integrated three separate
colleges, the College of Technology and
Seafaring, the College of Construction and the
College of Engineering, to form Luebeck
University of Applied Sciences.
With a sound reputation as a technical college of
higher education, Luebeck University of Applied
Sciences today offers 26 study programmes.
The current focus is on technology, civil
engineering, natural sciences, and economics.
The university's reputation, the high quality of
the study programmes, and excellent contacts
to industry ensure a sound education of
graduates and outstanding career opportunities.
Skills in management, analytical thinking,
languages and social competence are intrinsic
parts of all study programmes.

About the city

The ever-increasing number of students is an
indication of the attractiveness of Luebeck as a
place to study.
Luebeck offers a wide variety of cultural and
sporting activities. Nearly 8,000 students in
Luebeck appreciate the recreational
opportunities on their doorstep. The historic Old
Town of Luebeck (declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 1987) with its many
restaurants, cafs, cinemas, theatres, and
possibilities for sporting activities on the Baltic
Sea, is reason enough for many students to
choose Luebeck University of Applied Sciences
for their higher education.
Because of its proximity to the Baltic Sea and
the city of Hamburg, the Hanseatic City of
Luebeck is considered a well-kept secret among
students, since they can live and study here in
easily accessible surroundings, in contrast to
cities with "mass universities". Students here
enjoy the advantages of big-city life without the
disadvantages of mass universities.
Close connections to industry and to other
universities allow students to deepen their
knowledge wherever required.
In and around Luebeck, many global companies
can be found who offer traineeships and
research projects. Therefore a wide variety of
Bachelor's and Master's thesis topics can be
offered.
