What is the Internet of

Things?

Normally, you think of the internet as being a huge network of

computers, and now smartphones and tablets but all are machines
that are controlled by humans interactively. The technological vision
called the Internet of Things (IoT) takes everything a step further by
bringing network interconnectivity down to the level of noninteractive devices, called smart devices.
By providing devices like a watch, or alarm clock, or a pill bottle, or a
sprinkler a connection to a network they become smart. For
example, if your alarm clock accesses traffic data it can adjust your
wake up time appropriately. If your pill bottle was smart it could
alert you on your phone if you forgot to take your medication. If
your pill itself is smart, it can tell you or your doctor how its being

absorbed in the body. Tap your sprinkler into the local weather
forecast, and you can avoid watering on a rainy day.
The examples of applications are really endless. In fact, the year
2020 is predicted to have 26-30 billion devices connected on the
Internet of Things. Currently there is an estimated 8-10 billions
devices connected to the internet including computers, phones,
tablets, and smart things.
There are several competing technologies for connecting all of these
devices together. WiFi, WiFi Direct, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy
(BLE), and ZigBee are the primary competing technologies. Each
protocol has its own pros and cons.
These networking technologies can be split into two broad
categories: LANs (Local-Area-Network) and PANs (Personal-AreaNetwork ). LANs operate over an area the size of a house or perhaps
a factory, while PANs cover an area the size of a room. The table
below shows a summary of these competing networking protocols.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), also called Bluetooth Smart, is the

leader in the PAN category. It is designed for use in ultra-low power
applications that are usually powered by a small coin cell battery
that needs to last for years. In BLE applications the device is asleep
most of its life only waking up occasionally (to measure and transmit
a temperature reading, for example). One of the real beauties of
BLE is that it works with nearly all current smartphones just like
Bluetooth Classic.

WiFi is the leader in the LAN category and its available everywhere
from homes to coffee shops. WiFi is very well known and most of us
use it on a daily basis. It is significantly faster, more complex, and
more power hungry than Bluetooth Low Energy or ZigBee. WiFi
requires an access point (a router) so it cant be used for connecting
two devices directly.
WiFi Direct has the speed and range of WiFi but eliminates the need
for an access point, thus allowing two devices to form a direct
connection. For transferring large amounts of data, such as video,
WiFi Direct is much faster than Bluetooth (Classic or Low Energy).
ZigBee is a LAN protocol that has been designed to act like a PAN
with reduced complexity and power usage. Its primary use has
been in home automation systems. There is considerable doubt if
ZigBee will survive the wireless protocol wars and it very well could
eventually go the way of Beta video tapes.
The Internet of Things is still very much a work in progress. It is
expected to change our lives like the internet did nearly 20 years
ago. Within the next decade our lives, and the devices we use, will
be connected in ways that couldnt have been imagined several
years ago. Things are about to get really interesting.

Below is a list of some popular boards and development platforms to help you with your latest prototype
or DIY project.
The listings are organized on a general level by computing power, size and overall costs of the solutions.
They should not necessarily be compared side by side as there are large differences between them in their ideal
use cases, energy requirements, OS, etc.
A list of articles and resources at the bottom of the page can help you navigate some of the differences if you

are just getting started.
