Future Options for SAP Landscape

What is going to be change with SAP S/4HANA
Previously I have blogged Future of SAP User Interface with SAP S/4HANA about user interface
technologies with S/4 HANA.
Now I would like to give overview of what is going to be change with S/4 HANA, What are the components
exist after S/4 HANA.
With HANA data model simplification many SAP products are going to be changed.
Even SAP is giving some of product road maps, still not clear about current SAP Business Suite.
But thanks to SAP TechEd by sharing SAP strategy about other SAP components with S/4 HANA.
What are the components going to be changed?
Here are the components going to be converted with S/4 HANA and some of the components will be merged
with SAP S/4 HANA core.
1. EWM, TM, and TREX: S/4 HANA search engine will replace TREX. EWM and TM are planning to
move S/4 HANA core.
2. BW & BI: BI will be moved to cloud as C4A (Cloud for analytics). BW – Operational reporting will be
moved to S/4 HANA and BWhistory reporting stays as EDW.
3. PI: will be converted as PO or HANA cloud integration (HCI).
4. SCM: ATP, Production planning ad detail scheduling will come to S/4 HANA. Demand planning and
Supply planning will renew with IBP.
5. SRM: Converts as ARIBA for business network & S/4 HANA for procurement solutions
6. CRM: Hybris & C4C (Cloud for customer) for customer interaction and sales order execution will be
moved to S/4 HANA.
What are the components exist AS IS?
1. MDG: It will stay as a separate system as now.
2. EP: Enterprise portal stays and will be integrated with UI front end server.

Why ERP EhP7 is the first step to S/4 HANA –
Building Your Business Case

With the announcement of S/4 HANA and all the benefits that it brings, ALL SAP customer should be asking themselves how they
plan to evolve their SAP Business Suite investment to S/4 HANA.

In this blog I will share some common patterns I have seen with the customers that we have helped with this transition, which I
hope will help you to build your roadmap to S/4 HANA (or at least to EhP7).

I see 3 topics being used to create the business case to move :‐

I am on a burning platform.
I am missing out on new features that I am paying for.
I need a platform to support Digital Transformation.

I have discussed these in more detail below :
Burning Platform :
As messaged by SAP since 2012 support for NetWeaver Java 7.0x ends in 2017 and this should prompt ALL customers to review
their landscape now. It is also worth reviewing the support horizon for the Operating Systems / Databases running under the SAP
system to find out when support end.
Because of the above SAP have created a NetWeaver Hub Strategy, which encourages customers to upgrade NetWeaver systems
to at least 7.31, core ERP to Enhancement Package 7 and other applications to EhP3 (see Note 123213 ‐ requires SMP user).
It should be noted that it is possible to get exceptions to the above NetWeaver Hub Strategy where upgrading the whole landscape
at the same time is not possible or where systems will be decommissioned before support ends – SAP will evaluate your unique
usage scenario and grade it Green (within guidelines), Amber (outside guidelines but supportable for a defined
period) or Red (not supported), – this can be requested via SAP Support.
The upgrade process should be seen as an opportunity to simplify your landscape with opportunities to remove dual‐stack systems
(e.g PI/PO), merge / decommission systems (e.g Portal / BW), remove modifications, re‐think integration and cleanse / archive
data.
New Features :
The maintenance fees you pay to SAP each year are used to add new features / products to the SAP software
portfolio. In the majority of cases these features are ONLY added to the latest releases. This means if you do not
upgrade / migrate you are not taking advantage of these features. Some examples would include many of the Fiori
Applications, the HTML version of Screen Personas (due to GA Q2/2015), Self Service Procurement in ERP and new
user interfaces for Plant Maintenance. To find all the enhancements available see SAP Improvements and Innovations

what is available.
On the same page you will find the Business Scenario Recommendations for SAP Business Suite powered by SAP
HANA ‐ requires SMP user, not a catchy name but a free service from SAP that will give specific advice (based on your
usage) about which parts of your system would be improved using SoH (and S/4 HANA). You can see an example

This increase in features also applies to the NetWeaver components (e.g BW, PI/PO, Portal etc) which are constantly being
improved, to see these features you should look at the what’s new section of the product on help.sap.com.
Pathway to Digital Transformation :
The gateway to the next generation of SAP innovation and the new business models it enables is getting to ERP EhP7 (EhP3 for
other systems). From this waypoint you can move to Suite on HANA and then to S/4 HANA as the Exchange Innovation modules
are rolled out (Simple Finance now, Simple Logistics in Q4/2015 with further Exchange Innovations planned for 2016). The benefits
of this native HANA system are well documented in this blog by Sven Deneken.
And now to the Business Case :

To build your business case I recommend you consider the three dimensions above and group your benefits using the following
benefit categories :‐

Data Cleanse / Archiving
Real Time Integration
New Platform Capabilities
Remove Modifications
New Application Features
User Experience / Mobility
Using this model you can build the business case in a stepwise fashion that will help you to decide if you want to move to EhP7,
Suite on HANA or S/4 HANA. Even when you have decided on your target, you don’t have to do everything at once, but you do at
least need to get onto EhP7.

This part of the FAQ series we have prioritized for the questions around how to get to SAP S/4HANA,
let´s go:
What is the typical journey for an existing SAP Business Suite customer?
Moving to SAP S/4HANA for a typical existing SAP ERP 6.0 customer will require a move to the latest enhancement
package, followed by a database migration from anyDB to SAP HANA combined with the deployment of the exchange
innovation (new code). From an execution perspective, these steps can be executed in sequence or as a combined
step.

Moving to SAP S/4HANA for an existing SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA customer is even faster as only
the deployment of the exchange innovation (new code) is required.
Both journeys are well proven in the market with several hundred of live SAP Business Suite powered by SAP
HANA customers as well as SAP Simple Finance live customers.

What is the typical journey for a netnew customer?
The journey is defined by a netnew implementation of an SAP S/4HANA system with simpler adoption –
example: guided configuration, easy onboarding from the discovery of the solution through cloud trials to the
deployment with preconfigured best practices. We defined three major scenarios supported by tools and pre
configuration delivered through our SAP Rapid Deployment solutions (RDS):
How can SAP partners support the move of a customer to SAP S/4HANA?
SAP has an established partner ecosystem (valueadded retailers and systems integrators) that is ready to resell and
service SAP S/4HANA for our joint existing and new customers to implement future innovations. More than 50% of the
SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA projects were managed by partners.
Partners and SAP will support customers in their journey with predefined migration, system conversion in the
cloud, and deployment packages for quicker time to value. Companies of all sizes will benefit from the high
quality service and reseller capabilities our partners provide
What happens to existing modifications when a customer moves to S4/HANA?

In any scenario, the move to SAP S/4HANA is a great opportunity to validate the existing modifications and simplify
your solution. It has not been unusual for customers to realize that 50% of the modifications that hamper fast release
cycles and require long test cycles were no longer necessary to run the business, but were leftovers from older
projects while the remaining modifications could have been built in a less intrusive manner.

When moving to SAP S/4HANA, public cloud edition, customers will move their modifications to SAP HANA Cloud
Platform as an extension.

Also, customers that make the choice of the SAP S/4HANA, managed cloud edition, the recommended approach is to
use SAP HANA Cloud Platform extensions to provision enhancements.

In fact, standard field extensions can directly be done within the SAP Fiori UX while SAP HANA Cloud Platform can be
leveraged for more significant developments.

SAP S/4HANA, onpremise edition, provides maximum customization opportunities: on premise as traditionally done
in the past or through SAP HANA Cloud Platform. SAP has several references of SAP Business Suite customers using
SAP HANA Cloud Platform extensions for onpremise systems.

In general, the SAP HANA extension framework of SAP HANA Cloud Platform uses SAP HANA as the
common platform for SAP S/4HANA and offers additional choices such as the integration of open source
solutions. The extension framework has the advantage to isolate modifications from the core and drive agility
for the onpremise deployment and safeguard agility for cloud deployments. This means that rather than
modifying the core code, enhancements are put in a “safe” environment so that innovation packages can be
easily applied. The core SAP S/4HANA system remains “clean” and can be quickly and easily updated when
new innovations are added – in just the same way that consumer mobile apps are updated on a regular basis.
What happens to existing legacy interfaces if a customer moves to SAP S/4HANA?
SAP S/4HANA, onpremise edition, currently supports the existing published legacy interfaces.
How does SAP S/4HANA relate to and coexist with the existing SAP landscapes?
A single system can always only be on SAP S/4HANA or on the traditional SAP Business Suite (on SAP
HANA or anyDB). However, customers can decide to move separate installations within their landscape
individually to SAP S/4HANA and do not have to do a “big bang” for their whole system landscape – and thus
run in a mixed environment. As SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business Suite are using semantically consistent
data structures, a move to SAP S/4HANA is nondisruptive.
Can a customer choose to run the traditional SAP user interface and custom screens or is SAP Fiori
mandatory?
All SAP S/4HANA innovations are intended to be delivered with SAP Fiori UX providing the same experience
on all devices. However, a customer using SAP S/4HANA is planned to still be able to consume the
traditional user interfaces.
Can customers run different SAP S/4HANA editions in parallel in their enterprise architecture?
Yes, SAP S/4HANA editions are integrated and run mostly on the same data semantic.

Is SAP S/4HANA multitenant?
SAP S/4HANA gives customers the option to leverage the HANA multitenancy functionality as provided by the SAP
HANA platform (currently support package 9).

Do SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business Suite share the same data semantic?
With SAP S/4HANA, SAP has developed a new product that leverages basic data structures and elements of the SAP
Business Suite for maximum compatibility, nondisruptive migration and hybrid scenarios. However, SAP S/4HANA
provides new business functionality on top of these data structures natively built on the SAP HANA platform and
designed with the SAP Fiori UX principles.
SAP Business Suite onpremise customers on the latest enhancement package can easily move to this new
product simply by migrating to the SAP HANA database and applying the exchange innovation (new code) to
their current SAP Business Suite environment.

What is the fundamental difference between the old SAP Business Suite code line and the new SAP
S/4HANA Product code line?

The development approach of SAP S/4HANA is to eliminate all artefacts that have been introduced as performance
workarounds for classical rowbased RDBMS. These are aggregates and programmed indexes that contained no
semantic value and only provided fast access to sums and data. On the downside, these created interconnections in
the application and complexity in how to lock the system to avoid conflicting updates in aggregates. Moreover,
significant code had to be developed for lengthy ETL (extracttransformload) scenarios incurring data preparation and
exception management routines caused by latency.

This portion of the code did not carry business semantic in itself, but served as “performance proliferation” in business
processes.

With SAP S/4 HANA, these different types of workaround on restrictions based on technical limitations are no
longer necessary, as the latest information and the time travel from the columnar store can be accessed
instantaneously across all inserts and updates and therefore eliminates the need for any overhead of the index
and aggregates..
And due to popular demand a repeat: How does SAP S/4HANA relate to SAP’s existing portfolio of
cloud solutions?
SAP S/4HANA shall also be made available with public cloud and managed cloud editions. However, SAP
S/4HANA will not replace our existing portfolio of lineofbusiness cloud solutions; it will integrate with and
expand it. Our comprehensive offering is planned to allow SAP S/4HANA customers to build hybrid scenarios
between SAP S/4HANA and cloud solutions from SAP, including those from SuccessFactors and Ariba as
well as integration with SAP hybris Marketing. This way customers can leverage the cloud at their own pace,

the fundamentals
After the announcement of SAP S/4HANA, short for SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA, we are seeing a lot of
positive reactions. Sure, questions still remain, and always will. So we thought starting a FAQ series might be
very helpful.
But let us first recap some essentials:
already in 2014 we spearheaded simplification of the Business Suite with SAP Simple Finance and SAP
Business Suite powered by SAP HANA (in short market lingo: "Suite on HANA")
we have educated the market in Q4 2014 that we are about to launch significant further simplifications
based on our good experience with above, then known under the (internal) codename sinnovations
With the confidence and the success of the above, e.g. more than 1850 customers on "Suite on HANA",
many live, significant project sizes and distribution ... we decided that it is time to move. And we should
make one topic clear again we started this already early 2014 it was time for a new product, and the
name of this new breed is SAP S/4HANA.
Much has been published on the launch on February 3rd, so lets skip that one. Great interactions with
customers, partners and influencers have helped to prioritize, because we are at the start of a significant
transformation, I mean the industry as such. Whoever underestimates the impact of Digital Transformation
might be caught by surprise. We are convinced a big positive contribution to tackle the tasks at hand is to
change the core of companies business backbone the SAP Business Suite. And this is what we are doing.
Time for a series with further details. And keep the feedback coming, we appreciate it, we need it. Here are
my current favorites:
What is SAP S/4HANA?
SAP S/4HANA is a new product fully built on the most advanced inmemory platform SAP HANA and modern design
principles with SAP Fiori User Experience (UX). SAP S/4HANA delivers massive simplifications (customer adoption,
data model, user experience, decision making, business processes and models) and innovations (Internet of Things,
Big Data, business networks, and mobilefirst) to help businesses run simple in a digital and networked economy.

And if there are doubts that it is new we did split the codeline of the SAP Business Suite early 2014 (rough and tough
400 million lines of code), and since then we are massively simplifying the solution keeping what is helpful, leaving
away what not longer is needed AND building new parts. The priorities are driven by market input not by technical
desire alone. But it is amazing what the new technology, the platform we are architecting towards can help. And also
clear we are keeping the semantic data model in tact, so migration for existing customers is simple (pun intended).
Is SAP S/4HANA available today?
The onpremise edition of SAP S/4HANA is already available today for customers in all industries and regions. The
first public cloud edition is intended to be made available early in 2015, followed by the managed cloud edition
later in 2015.

What is the business scope of the different editions?
SAP S/4HANA, onpremise edition, already offers a business scope that is similar in terms of coverage,
functionality, industries, and languages as the current SAP Business Suite. Within this scope, SAP
S/4HANA also includes the transformational simplifications delivered with SAP Simple Finance (SAP
Accounting powered by SAP HANA) as well as a planned integration with SuccessFactors Employee
Central and Ariba.
The onpremise edition is intended to offer a yearly innovation cycle through simplification and innovation
packages. The next simplification and innovation package is planned for the end of 2015.
SAP S/4HANA, public cloud edition, should address specific business scenarios of lines of business and
industries. The first delivery in early 2015 is expected to cover key scenarios in customer engagement
and commerce and professional services (10 core scenarios, plus planned integration with
SuccessFactors Employee Central and Ariba Network, SAP hybris Marketing)
SAP S/4HANA, managed cloud edition, should address a similar business scope as the onpremise
edition. The first delivery in early 2015 is planned to already cover essential core ERP scenarios
(accounting, controlling, materials management, production planning and control, sales and distribution,
logistics execution, plant maintenance, project system, and PLM, plus integration with SuccessFactors
Employee Central and Ariba Network, SAP hybris Marketing)
The cloud editions are intended to offer a quarterly innovation cycle.

Which industry solutions will be available in SAP S/4HANA and by when?
SAP S/4HANA, onpremise edition supports current lines of business and industries.
SAP S4/HANA, public cloud edition will be released by business scenario for specific languages, lines of
business and industries. The first industry available will be the professional services industry. The scope will
always be determined in close cooperation with the SAP user groups based on customer requirements.
SAP S/4HANA, managed cloud edition, is planned to ultimately have a similar scope as the onpremise
edition. For the first delivery in early 2015, the following core industries are planned: Professional
Services, Chemicals, Consumer Products, Industrial Machinery and Components, Life Sciences, as well
as Transportation and Logistics.

How does SAP S/4HANA relate to SAP’s existing portfolio of cloud solutions?
SAP S/4HANA shall also be made available with public cloud and managed cloud editions. However, SAP S/4HANA
will not replace our existing portfolio of lineofbusiness cloud solutions; it will integrate with and expand it. Our
comprehensive offering is planned to allow SAP S/4HANA customers to build hybrid scenarios between SAP
S/4HANA and cloud solutions from SAP, including those from SuccessFactors and Ariba as well as integration with
SAP hybris Marketing. This way customers can leverage the cloud at their own pace, based on their needs, while
keeping all the integration and business benefits of their existing SAP solutions. In addition, SAP S/4HANA is
designed to easily connect with global business networks such as, for example, the Ariba Network and Concur.
How does the SAP HANA Cloud Platform relate to SAP S/4HANA?
In the context of SAP S/4HANA, SAP HANA Cloud Platform serves as an extension platform and agility
layer. It is possible to build specific capabilities extending the scope of SAP S/4HANA by either integrating
nonSAP functions or building your own capabilities. The cloud platform not only serves as the development
platform but also as the runtime foundation for the developed solutions. The extensions built on the cloud
platform can run against both cloud and onpremise deployments of SAP S/4HANA.

Will SAP continue to deliver innovations to SAP Business customers on any DB?
Yes. SAP remains committed to protect our customers’ investments. We recently announced that we are extending our
maintenance commitment until at least 2025. This is an unprecedented commitment to customers in the IT industry. We
will also continue to deliver innovations without disruption (through enhancement packages for example) to SAP
Business Suite customers on anyDB and on SAP HANA.
However, transformational business and IT simplifications require a transformational platform and this is why
as of today SAP S/4HANA runs only on SAP HANA. It is the logical next step for our installed base
customers and the biggest step forward for 10+ years with full compatibility with SAP ERP 6.0

What is really new in SAP S/4HANA compared to SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA?
With SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA, SAP was the only software vendor in the market to allow SAP
Business Suite customers bring together transactions and analysis into a single inmemory platform. This innovation
has been extremely successful in the market as 1,850+ customers (existing and new) acquired SAP Business Suite
powered by SAP HANA in less than two years to run their business in real time, making it one of the fastestgrowing
product in SAP’s history.
With SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA, our product approach has been focused primarily on porting the
applications on the SAP HANA platform and optimizing the code to allow customers gain significant performance in
their missioncritical business processes and reporting activities. In other words, the applications remained unchanged
and primarily optimized to run on SAP HANA in a nondisruptive way for customers – SAP HANA representing a new
database alternative for existing customers, with a simple database migration required to drive the entire business in
realtime.
SAP S/4HANA is a new product. With SAP S/4HANA, we are building on the success of the SAP Business Suite

In addition, SAP HANA Cloud Platform serves as open extension, agility layer for SAP S/4HANA. The extensions built
on the cloud platform can run against either deployment of SAP S/4HANA: in the cloud and onpremise.

Why focus on simplicity?

Today we have a lot of different information sources, complex business processes, and there is a lot of technology
change. The challenge is to be on top of technology.

Profit losses is your personal experience in the three dimensions; SAP “targets” to solve these problems.

With technology move to HANA it is now S/4 HANA, driven by “ultimate simplicity & UI to change user experience”

SAP will simplify data model; changing the basis of the software but not change the business. No updates of
indices/aggregates.

More than 280 customers live with ERP/CRM systems in 40 countries around the globe; every size of customers

The user experience, Fiori, has to be webenabled, HTML5, supporting automatically any device.

Configuration does not have to be complex or take a lot of time. SAP will use the guided configuration especially in
cloud, also for on premise

Figure 3 on the right shows the key benefits S/4 HANA family.

S/4 HANA is offered for different deployments, for on premise, in cloud – private & public. These products will be
sharing the same code and key benefits. The cloud can be a subscription service, with a new offering on the license
model.

SAP natively used the major benefits of HANA – directly linked to data footprint

This supports a clear, embedded standalone analytics with merged OLAP/OLTP.

No more locking due to not update multiple tables

Actual / historical data where historical data can be node or disk and you only work on actual data and reduce data
footprint

In the past the UI was driven by transactions which you maintained; now you can combine OLTP/OLAP with the in
memory database. During transaction runs, the data is fast enough to gather predictions, simulations,
recommendations – you don’t need the selection screen any more. You can work on a screen showing the best
options to solve the business problems.

Codeployment is S/4 HANA ERP, CRM on ERP in the future to simplify landscape

You can run on a HANA multitenancy database; use HANA Cloud Platform to build extensions

“Technology change leads to tremendous business advantage”. If you update an FI document with 3 lines items –
BKPF and BSEG – to support a rowbased database with aggregates the with 10 inserts and 5 updates.

SAP Simple Finance runs with 4 inserts and no updates for an update as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 5 shows the result of the Simple Finance example and with a reduced footprint with less updates, good for
throughput and performance

Figure 5 shows measures with customers. Benefits include on the fly aggregations, used for search, fact sheets,
analytics inside OLTP to be used with OLTP transactions.

If you run a financial close, you can simulate financial close

Then we saw a demo on the last 8 quarters based on SAP data (scrambled)

Fields are available in the screen below in Figure 7

Understanding SAP Private Cloud, Public Cloud and
On Premise Important for S/4HANA Roadmap

SAP is "The Cloud Company Powered by SAP HANA", so it is important to understand what different options we now
have with respect to cloud / on premise deployments. This is particularly important if you are trying to work out how
S4HANA will impact your Business Suite investment.

So this is my understanding of the options we have ?

Public Cloud Software is 100% managed by SAP as the "cloud provider" with updates automatically pushed to the
systems on a timeline defined by SAP with tightly controlled configuration and extension frameworks. For example
SuccessFactors, Concur, FieldGlass, Cloud 4 Customer, Ariba,and Hybris have public cloud delivery models. The first
offerings of S4HANA will be offered as Public Cloud offerings. Also HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) is offered in the public
cloud model and can be used to extend applications (instead of doing this inside) in any of the other deployment
models.

Private Cloud Software is 100% managed by SAP as the "cloud provider" but update schedules are agreed with the
customer, some software modifications are allowed but these will increase the fees to run the system (as it is harder to
manage). S4HANA will offer this model and Business Suite is offered this way via the HANA Enterprise Cloud for
customers that run it on SAP HANA.

On Premise This is the model that most SAP customers are familiar with, where software is installed and run by the
customer (sometimes this is done by an outsources service provider or hosted by a service provider). In this model we
can have as many modification as we like but they will increase the cost of ownership as each needs to be
considered each time an upgrade / patch is applied. S4HANA will be offered in this model.

One analogy that I like is that of the Mobile Phone :

Public Cloud This would be how my Mum consumes her SmartPhone, she comes to me and tells me what she wants,
I set it up and she uses it. When she wants something difficult, I tell her that the phone can't do that

Private Cloud This is a bit like how I use my SmartPhone, I have loads of apps and accessories but all of them have
come from the phones app store and are supported by the phones manufacturer.

On Premise With HANA This is like my daughters SmartPhone which she has hacked to mean that she has access
to the guts of the phone, writes her own apps and downloads stuff from unofficial websites all at her risk.

On Premise Without HANA This is like not running a SmartPhone and saying "why do I need to do anything but
phone, text ?".

The graphic below shows how I think the software under your system might change depending upon your chosen
model.

Today SAP announced SAP S/4 HANA you can read the press release here. This is a topic I have discussed since
Simple Finance was launch at SAPPHIRE in May 2014. See my previous blogs here for R/4 and here for
impact of sinnovations.

As a man who has never been known for understatement, Bill McDermott described it as "The most important SAP
product launch for 23 years" and I think I agree with him.

That launch was SAP R/3 which still sits at the heart of what is now called SAP Business Suite (often referred to as
SAP ERP).

Why should you be interested in S/4HANA ?
Existing Customers

As an existing SAP Business Suite customer, you should be interested, as SAP want you to be moving to S/4 (and that
is where a significant amount of your maintenance fees will be going)

These are the reasons why you need S/4 :

You will be able to take much of your investment from R/3 (Business Suite) to S/4, especially that expensive
configuration.
S/4 will have Fiori user interface built in to the new Simple Modules
S/4 Simple Modules will have features that Business Suite never had e.g Predictive Actions
S/4 will (only) run on SAP HANA and this means you get real time data for transactions AND reporting plus a
platform that is ready for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Digital Transformation (DT)
S/4 will deliver cloud qualities in terms of management and cost of ownership, offered at the pace that makes
sense, from On Premise to Public Cloud

New Customers

For new customers looking for an Enterprise grade solution, you can now get the knowhow from 40 years of running
business processes, with cloud simplicity, information at the speed of thought, a responsive User Experience and a
platform ready for IoT / DT.

What should you do next ?

What you do next will depend upon your views on how much your business model will be disrupted by Digital
Transformation and the Internet of Things most people seem to think the answer is "quite a lot" (note the

SAP Smart Business for Project Execution

Project Managers typically have little time and patience to work with any ITsystems to run their projects. On
the other side they always need to be on top of the statuses of their projects and take corrective measures as
soon as possible if required.

SAP Smart Business for Project Execution is a great solution for project managers to monitor project
execution and to focus on the most important aspects like deviations, critical and upcoming tasks.

From the project manager’s perspective, the whole process should be very simple:
gain insight → collaborate → take action
Let’s have a look at a concrete example, to see how SAP Smart Business for Project Execution can achieve
this.

1. Gain Insight

The entry point is always the personalized Fiori Launchpad (Fig. 1) which offers a comprehensive overview of
all projects. Here a project manager can scan for existing deviations and risks across all projects assigned to
him.

Next, we will open the project report app which offers an immediate overview on the key aspects of all
projects (Fig. 2). The project manager can focus on a particular project where problems were reported and
analyze costs, scheduling and work assignments.

A very nice feature is that drilldowns are always possible with just a few click. For example, the distribution
of planned and actual costs can be analyzed along the project timeline and value categories (Fig. 3). The
project manager can go up to the line item level and related CO or reference documents for more details.

In our example the progress of Project “Paris” is behind schedule and the planned work is already exceeded.
The project manager can analyze the WBS element with exceeding work in more detail. He observes that for
the assembly the planned work recently has been exceeded as well (Fig. 4). In order to prohibit further time
recordings for assembly related activities until further clarification he can lock the assembly WBS element and
assigned activities. But team members should be notified about this problem and the change. Here the
integration with SAP Jam comes into place. The project manager can use SAP Jam to request more
information on the work deviation from his team and inform them about the status change.

2. Collaborate
Team members can see the request of their project manager in SAP JAM. They can start a collaboration to
find the best solution (Fig. 5). They can create for example a new Pro/Con Table to brainstorm together on
potential ways to make good for the work deviations. The project manager is informed about the reason for the
deviation and also gets solution proposals, like for example to change the sequence of the final test activities.

3. Take Action
The project manager sees the notifications from his team members in his Launchpad, he does not need to
check the SAP Jam group on a regular basis. If he is fine with the proposed solution, he can unlock the
assembly WBS element and activities (Fig. 6) and use the “Share on SAP Jam” feature to communicate the
changes.

Summary

We have seen how simple it can be for project managers to identify and mitigate problems. The key message
and value proposition of SAP Smart Business for Project Execution can be summarized to the following
points:

Holistic realtime transparency on projects statuses, critical variances and risks anywhere, anytime
and on any device
Capabilities to drilldown to analyze root causes, from high level deviation and risk KPIs to line item
level and factsheets
Insight to action pattern: take immediately corrective measures using transactional apps, or leveraging
SAP JAM for collaboration on next steps

Have you ever been under time pressure and needed to find something in your enterprise system very
quickly? It can be very frustrating if simple tasks take more time and energy that they actually should.

Let’s take a look at a concrete example: you have a big customer event, you prepared all the details but
somehow you missed that you require five whiteboard for interactive sessions, and you only have two. The
event starts tomorrow and you are already onsite to prepare the last details.

How can you get three more whiteboard intime? You could delegate the task, but since you need the
whiteboards by tomorrow you want to get it done by yourself. You know exactly what you need, but you have
no knowledge about the material number, the right supplier, the existence of any purchase contracts, etc. Can
you still achieve your goal? With the power of SAP HANA and the user experience of SAP Fiori, yes!

The entry point is very simple: just open the Fiori Launchpad and type “whiteboard” in the search field.

The system will display a list of the most relevant results, across all searchenabled business objects in your
enterprise system. Next to each result the document type (e.g. material, supplier, purchase order etc.) and
some attributes are displayed, hence picking the right one is an easy task. Furthermore, the results are
personalized (e.g. documents you access more often are ranked higher) and localized (e.g. suppliers closer to
your location are ranked higher). This is Fiori Search powered by SAP HANA!

Now that you have identified the right material you can just click on it and have access to all the relevant
information. And it’s not only basic information, like material master data. On the same screen you can see all
the documents associated to your material: suppliers, purchase contracts, purchase orders, etc. This is one
example of a Fiori Fact Sheet you have all the relevant information in one place.

Each business object in the material factsheet contains a link to its own fact sheet. By clicking on a supplier
you can go to the supplier’s fact sheet, where you can check the address, thus making sure you pick the one
closest to you location.

And it’s not only about insight, you can also take action. Each fact sheet has actions associated with it,
depending on the document type. In our case we can trigger the creation of a new purchase order directly from
the supplier factsheet. You are no longer required to memorize transaction codes.

Do you want to make sure your whiteboards arrive in time? On the same fact sheet you can find the
responsible persons and their contact data. It’s that simple!

Summary

Armed only with the name of the material you managed to create a new purchase order with only few clicks.
Finding the right information and taking action on it is as simple as it should be with Fiori Search and
Fiori Fact Sheets!

Districts for SAP Business Suite Customers – which
one do you want to belong to ?

NOTE : Since writing this blog, SAP announced that sinnovations would be call S/4 HANA (so I got
close with my R/4 predication ), the options are still valid and I discuss the various cloud options in
this blog.
At TechEd last week (Nov 2014), Bernd Leukert announced that SAP was launching a new solution called s
innovations, this came on the back of Simple Finance that was launch in early 2014 and showcased at
SAPPHIRE in May ( I called in R/4 in this blog)

From what I could glean from the various press conferences and talking to others like Dick Hirsch, it seems that s
innovations is a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that shares the same semantic data model as SAP Business
Suite (the data model that has grown over 40 years and supports 25+ industries). For those that prefer a managed /
private cloud (key in some industries), sinnovations will also be available on the SAP managed cloud (HEC). s
innovations will also blend in the best of the cloud only solutions purchased by SAP (e.g SuccessFactors, Ariba,
Concur, FieldGlass, Hybris).

4 Districts

This means that from my point of view, SAP Business Suite customers now have 4 different ways to consume SAP
Business Suite like features in the future :

1. SAP Business Suite on AnyDB (onPremise or hosted by someone other than SAP) – fewer new features as
many new features from SAP will require SAP HANA to drive next generation features like predictive, social and
geo spatial data. Features will be delivered via Enhancement Packages every 912 months.
2. SAP Business Suite on HANA (either onPremise or in the HANA Enterprise Cloud) – Many new features,
delivered via Enhancement Packages every 912 months. Note : As half way house to it is possible to use HANA
in “sidecar mode” with writes/update to AnyDB and Reads from HANA.
3. sinnovations on managed cloud – All the features from sinnovations delivered in a SAP managed cloud for
customers that do not want a SaaS solution. Many new features / innovation with lower TCO.
4. sinnovations SaaS (only on HANA Cloud Platform) – Maximum level of features / innovation with lowest TCO.

SAP are still pushing the message of “innovation without disruption” which most customers know means “Innovation
without as much disruption as implementing something else”.

I personally think this is true and think SAP should be congratulated for focusing on helping customers maximise the
investment they have made in their onpremise landscape. SAP have backed this with the extension of mainstream
maintenance for Business Suite 7 to 2025.
Path ways to Innovation

From AnyDB to Business Suite on HANA : The upgrade path from AnyDB to Business Suite on HANA is pretty clear.
It is technically a database switch and provides access to HANA only (e.g Many Fiori Apps) and HANA accelerated
features (e.g MRP. COPA etc). All custom extensions would need to be tested and adjusted as required. You also
need to move to EhP7 for ERP and EhP3 for other Business Suite components.

From Business Suite on HANA to sinnovations : The path to sinnovations is less clear at this point, but the shared
semantic model will be key to this move, as I would expect data and configuration to be migrated from Business Suite
to sinnovations. I think SAP will provide rich tooling to support this migration (as they have for the move from SAP
Process Integration to SAP Process Orchestration). I would expect modifications would need to be reimplemented as
extensions using the HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) or SAP Process Orchestration (for onpremise).

So the advice I would give to an existing SAP customer would be as follows :

1. 1) Upgrade to the latest EhP’s and try to remove as much custom code as possible. Rebuild modifications as
Extensions using HCP or SAP Process Orchestration (for onpremise).
2. 2) If you want to get the most for your maintenance fees, upgrade to Business Suite on HANA, again looking to
remove custom code (e.g which reports that can now be done using HANA Live etc)
3. 3) Migrate to sinnovations over time either function by function (e.g finance, logistics etc) or geography by
geography (as sinnovations supports all the lines of business supported by Business Suite)

Why upgrade ? Because if you don’t you are paying maintenance for very little more than support. You will need to
change to deal with the opportunities / threats that the Internet of Things / Networked Economy / Omnichannel and
your competitors bring.

The Analysis Path Framework product team will be conducting usability tests onsite at 2014 Analytics and
BusinessObjects User Conference in Fort Worth (September 2224, 2014). Don't miss out on the chance to test out
and provide feedback the Analysis Path Framework (APF) a framework for creating interactive chart oriented drilldown
applications.

Below is an extract of the official information that will appear in conference materials, but you can sign up before you
get to Texas to ensure a time slot convenient for you. Instructions on how to sign up are at the bottom of this post.

Description:
The APF (Analysis Path Framework) builds the foundation for a new class of intuitive, interactive and flexible realtime
drilldown Analytical Fiori apps to explore complex big data. During this test you will
• experience and evaluate the userfriendliness and usability of Analytical Fiori Apps created using the Analyis Path
Framework.
• learn how the Anaylsis Path Framework enables you to create Analytical Fiori Apps without programming.

Roles:
• Data Analysts or anyone responsible to create, transform, and analyze data.
• Professionals responsible to configure and provide analytical tools/ envirionments.

Preview:
You will be testing an APF based Fiori App as well as a prototype of the APF Configuration Modeler. This includes

the interactive and stepbystep creation of analysis paths by
•selecting relevant analysis steps and visual representations (chart types) from categories in the analysis step gallery
•applying filters
•saving analysis paths.
In each analysis step, you can investigate KPIs/ measures and select relevant data to filter the information provided in
subsequent steps. By combining different analysis steps and applying filters, you interactively create your flexible
analysis path.

•create categories (to assign available analysis steps)
•create analysis steps (to define the KPIs, measures and dimensions/filters to be analyzed as well as the relevant data

Impact of Platform Changes: How SAP HANA
Impacts an SAP Landscape

In a previous blog, I outlined why I thought that the SAPPHIRE announcements about Simple Suite were the
equivalent to the move from R/2 (mainframe) to R/3 (client server).

It means that new approaches are possible for all the layers of the architecture. So, companies will have to consider
the following:

Impact of UI changes How users interact with SAP
Impact of coding changes How to develop applications
I mpact of integration changes How to talk to nonSAP systems
Impact of platform changes How HANA impacts how to plan an SAP landscape (this blog)
Impact of the cloud How SAP Cloud impacts users

In a series of blog over the coming months, I will consider each of the layers in the architecture and the changes that
will be necessary for SAP customers to gain maximum benefit from SAP HANA.

This blog will focus on the impact of HANA as a platform, while future blogs will cover changes to the application
architecture, user experience architecture, and integration architecture.

One interesting point to note is that, in many cases, things that were “not allowed” in the old world are now “best
practices” in the new one!

How to Adopt HANA

First Step: Understand Where You Will Use It

You must first create a roadmap that maps the benefits of HANA to the opportunities and/or pain points in your
organisation. To do this you will need to answer two key questions:

1. What are the capabilities of HANA?
2. What are the opportunities and pain points in your organisation?

Depending upon your organisation your enterprise architecture team may already have the answers to the second
question. If they don’t, then read the various success stories on SAPHANA.com to trigger ideas. For instance, one
common starting point is SAP Business Warehouse performance, where HANA can enable nearreal time reporting
where a nonHANA system may only be able to deliver results daily / weekly or monthly.

As far as the first question is concerned, SAPHANA.com is definitely your destination of choice as it has many guides
on the various capabilities of SAP HANA. At a very high level, you could adopt SAP HANA as follows:

Upgrade existing SAP applications – e.g. SAP BW on HANA, Suite on HANA, Simple Finance, and more.
Adopt new “HANA only” SAP applications – e.g. SAP Operational Process Intelligence, SAP Integrated Planning,
and much of SAP Fiori.
Use SAP HANA to develop bespoke applications – Utilise the capabilities of SAP HANA to create “custom” apps
that deliver competitive advantage – e.g. Burberry Client Telling App or John Deere Predictive Maintenance App.
Second Step: Acquire Skills in SAP HANA

The next step in your journey to SAP HANA (and this can be done in parallel with the first step) is to decide how you
are going to acquire the skills needed to architect, design, implement, and operate SAP HANA.

How you achieve this will depend upon the sourcing strategy you have adopted as an organization. If you have
selected an outsourced model, you’ll have to work with your partner (or perhaps a new one) to ensure they have
invested in SAP HANA knowledge. That way, your partner can give you the best advice.

For an insourced model, you’ll need focused training for your architects, designers, developers and support. Again,
SAPHANA.com is a great source for free training, as is open.SAP.com. Also look for SAP HANA certification courses.

Architects and designers will need to learn that SAP HANA is more than a “fast database.” They’ll need to understand
the various engines that come bundled in the product—and decide how they should or could be used in the
organisation. From an SAPcentric perspective, they will need to stop viewing the database layer as a file store that is
only accessed via the application server level. In the old world, direct DB access was seen as negative (and in some
cases, it was outside the customer’s database licence). Using HANA, you will only get its full power if you DO access
the database (and associated services) directly.

For developers, new languages/concepts need to be learned, such as SAP River RDL, SQL, SQLScript, JavaScript, R
and OData.

Meanwhile, the operations team will need the skills to monitor, tune, backup, restore and make data highly available.

The degree to which you have to learn any of the above will depend upon the HANA roadmap created in the first step.

Third Step: Hardware and Software

Based on the HANA roadmap, you’ll understand your usage pattern over the next three to five years. This will help
inform the amount of HANA technology you’ll need and how it could be licenced.

A number of options exist. The right one for you will depend upon your usage pattern and your approach to the cloud.
At a high level, consider the following options:

Your own data centre with onpremise perpetual licence.
A thirdparty data centre with managed cloud as a service subscription licence.
SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud with perpetual licence.
SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud with a subscription licence.
SAP HANA Cloud Platform with subscription licence.
Public clouds such as AWS and Azure with perpetual licence.

You should evaluate each option, as your solution could be a hybrid between two models. Using the managed cloud
options (HEC and MCaaS) will greatly reduce the need to develop inhouse operational HANA skills.

Fourth Step: Create an Implementation Programme

The final part of adoption means creating an implementation plan that addresses your HANA requirements over the
long term. This will depend on your current landscape and the versions of software you run. As a general rule, the
adoption of HANA under existing SAP applications will require the application to be on relatively new versions of the
software with uptodate service packs.

The other major impact area will be on projects that are in flight, or planned within the HANA adoption window. Any
plans for using HANA will need to be dovetailed into these existing plans to ensure you avoid conflicts and leverage
new opportunities. (For instance, HANA allows you to use much more of Fiori.)

Conclusion

If you go through the above process, I predict two things:

1. You’ll find a usecase and business case to adopt HANA.
2. The final landscape at the end of your threetofive year roadmap will have less boxes and complexity than you
have today.
