1.2 Student participation requirements

The JCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy (4.3) indicates that, a 3 credit point subject will require a
130 hour work load of study-related participation (including class attendance) over the duration of the study
period, irrespective of mode of delivery. This work load comprises timetabled hours and other attendance
requirements, as well as personal study hours, including completion of assessment requirements. Note that
attendance at specified classes may be a mandatory requirement for satisfactory completion of some subjects
(Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy, 5.9); and that additional hours may be required per week for those
students in need of English language, numeracy or other learning support.

the invigilated components may, in exceptional circumstances, be reviewed by the School Assessment

Section 2. Subject Details

2.1 Subject description
This subject firstly introduces students to a foundation on ethics and what ethics actually means within a
business context. Directors responsibilities are not limited by law, but extend to the expectations of the many
stakeholders in society, as a firms reputation can impact on long-term survival and prosperity. Although this
subject focuses on larger firms, many of the issues raised and lessons learned in this subject are relevant to the
small business owner who uses a company framework for his or her business. This subject, by way of practical
examples and case studies, builds an appreciation and understanding of the responsibilities of board members
and senior managers in todays corporate environment. An understanding of directors responsibilities leads to
an appreciation of the need for good corporate governance and the monitoring and controlling of business
activities. Ethical standards and responsible practices are the cornerstone of good governance practice in
modern organisations.
This subject is a core requirement for the Master of Business Administration

2.3 Learning and teaching in this subject

This subject uses a combination of approaches to teaching and learning, including both student centred and
teacher directed approaches. The content of the subject is disseminated using a variety of teaching strategies
including case studies, discussions, and readings. At the beginning of each lecture, you will be made aware of
the expected learning outcomes, how such outcomes are relevant to the world of business, and the resources
that support the learning outcomes of this subject.
You are expected to be an active participant in the learning process and are encouraged to participate in
lectures and undertake weekly readings.
Beyond the classroom, your learning experience will be greatly enhanced if you collaborate and share ideas with
other students. One easy way to achieve this is to form a study group with 2-3 other students with similar needs
and expectations. Your lecturer can assist with this.
You will find subject materials, such as this outline, PowerPoints for the lecture and other reading materials on
LearnJCU each week. The reading materials are the beginning of your learning experience. You are encouraged

to read widely before and after class, utilising not only the academic literature, but also other media resources
which surround the case studies we will discuss. You will be expected to be able to differentiate between more
reliable and less reliable sources.

Section 3. Assessment Details

3.1 Requirements for completion of subject
In order to pass this subject, you must:
Obtain a final mark of at least 50% to pass the subject. In addition, the expectation is to obtain at least an
average of 50% over all invigilated components (supervised individual assessment) within a subject to pass the
subject overall. Any student who does not achieve a pass in the invigilated components may, in exceptional
circumstances, be reviewed by the School Assessment Committee.
Students who have completed less than 100% of the assessment will be subject to review by the School
Assessment Committee which could result in an overall fail.
It is important to be aware that assessment is always subject to final ratification following the examination
period and that no single result represents a final grade in a subject (Learning, Teaching and Assessment
Policy 5.21.). This subject is delivered across a number of campuses utilising multiple markers. Raw marks
gained in part or all of the assessment may be modified as part of the moderation processes that will be
employed across campuses.

3.2 Feedback on student learning

The assessment for this subject is based upon case studies given to you by the lecturer. It is important that you
engage actively in the initial research and opportunities given in class to discuss the cases. It is through this
interactive process that you will understand the required depth of research and gain the ability to apply your
research in a discussion of the case.

You will be expected to critically evaluate, in essay format, the ethical issues in a complex, current business
problem. Ethics are based on moral decision-making and there is not always a correct answer. In the essay you
will explore the issue given from different viewpoints before deciding on the correct procedure. You will be
required to justify your choice.

The print media are not unbiased and present different points of view. You are required to research a business
issue which will be given to you by your lecturer and write two editorials (each of a maximum of 700 words), one
for The Australian and one for The Financial Review. Each paper has a different audience and is owned by
different stakeholders. The papers therefore have different concerns and points of view. You will be expected to
write each editorial giving regard to these differences.

ASSESSMENT TASK 3: EXAMINATION DESCRIPTION

You will be required to complete a two-hour, end of teaching period, exam. The University will determine the date
and time of the final exam and will provide exam timetables.
You will be given a case study to research in the week before the exam. The examination will be an
extended response to the case study. You are permitted to bring one side of an A4 page of type written
notes into the exam (font size minimum 11pt, single spaced). The outcome of the exam will depend on
the quality of the research you have undertaken before the exam and your familiarity with it.
Please note the rubrics on pages 14 and 15 of this outline. The rubrics give you an indication of the skill and
knowledge you will be required to demonstrate in the final exam. Review them carefully.
ASSESSMENT TASK 3: EXAMINATION CRITERIA

Students are expected to obtain at least an average of 50% for the examination which is the only invigilated
component (supervised individual assessment) in the subject. In order to pass this subject overall, you must

Section 4. Other Information about Assessment and Student Support

4.1 Submission and return of assessment
The ability to adhere to deadlines is a highly desirable attribute that employers seek in our graduates. Right from
the beginning, new students should acquire the habit of meeting deadlines for their work, by organising their
study time appropriately. The following points apply to the submission of assessment
1. Extensions will be granted in cases of illness or personal issues (medical certificate/counsellors
statement required). It is at the discretion of the subject co-ordinator/lecturer that extensions will be
granted for inescapable, unexpected, documented work commitments (provide documentation). You
should contact your lecturer before the due date if you are likely to require an extension.
2. Where no prior extension has been approved, late submissions will incur a penalty of 5% per day or part
thereof. Weekends are treated as a single full day because university buildings are not usually
accessible of over the weekend to allow for submission. Assessment tasks will generally not be graded
after 14 days past the due date.
3. Assignments must be submitted in class during the week that they are due. There is no provision for any
other point of drop-off. Students may not email an assignment without prior approval from the Subject
Coordinator/Lecturer. Submission could be required as Safe Assignment and in hard copy form.
4. The assessment will be returned with feedback in in class the following week.
4.2 Plagiarism and referencing

is a form of cheating and any instances of plagiarism will be dealt with promptly according to University
