Sample Data from VADEQ Drought Monitoring, and Instream Flow

Decision Support System

Background Information:
Summary data is based on the most recently available information from the USGS NWIS
automated data retrieval system, and the NOAA online grid based precipitation data
system (serving point values for precipitation on a 4km x 4km square grid). Data is
retrieved daily, and summary tables and maps are automatically generated by the decision
support system at Virginia DEQ. The daily flow zone format (shown at the bottom of the
page under the heading “Instream Study-Based Metrics”) is based on the flow
prescriptions that resulted from the report “Stream Habitat Modeling to Support Water
Management Decisions for the North Fork Shenandoah River, Virginia”, (Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University, Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, 2005). Use
of these graphs and supporting data can be configured to be automatically posted to an
externally available web site for dynamic linkage into a web page of your design.

Data Formatting Information:

The format presented below is merely a sample of the formats, and analysis time periods
that are used internally at DEQ, and could be adjusted based on the requirements of your
organizations. Most specifically, the GIS extents and features used in this document
represent selected sub-watershed boundaries in the North Fork Shenandoah watershed
(flow and precipitation), and the overall Shenandoah Valley watershed (groundwater). If
you can provide GIS shapefiles of desired watershed or political boundaries, those could
be integrated into this summary application with minimal effort on the part of the
VADEQ water supply planning staff.

Advanced Functionality Provided by the VADEQ Decision Support System:

In addition to the drought reporting features shown here, the VADEQ DSS has the
capability to provide web-based modeling of the impacts of future water use and
meteorological scenarios. These water supply models are linked to a variety of instream
flow models, and non-point source pollution models to provide the widest possible range
of impact assessment. While access to this tool is currently limited to entities within the
VADEQ network, we are exploring ways to enable external access in the near future.
Additionally, this application is based on open source software, and can be distributed for
installation on external servers and desktops if your need for this capability occurs before
we can establish external access.
