ACOUSTICS
-Study of Production ,Control , Transmission, Reception , Effects and
the Nature of sound waves
ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS
The technology of designing spaces, structures and mechanical
systems to meet hearing needs
ELEMENTS OF ACOUSTICS
SOURCE OF SOUND
PATH OF TRANSMISSION
RECEIVER OF SOUND

The acoustics of a building are attended to by the designer

while designing the auditorium itself-subjects such as roofs
capes and materials used for the roofs and walls are
considered by the designer as per the standards and the
requirements if the considered auditorium

Interesting roofs capes with false

ceiling incorporated in buildings for
good sound intensity for the receiver

Auditoriums acoustics are designed

based on the no of peopleoccupancy of the space as given

CIRCULATION DIAGRAMS

External circulation mainly happens in the foyer which is placed in front

of the main entrance
The foyer leads into the internal circulation spaces on both the floors
The internal spaces consist of 3 sloping ramps -2m wide
The entrance is opposite the stage

External circulation spaces

VENTILATION AND LIGHTING

Internal circulation spaces

The hall consists of 12 windows(six on each side) on the upper

floor and 6 windows (3 on each side ) and is thereby well
ventilated naturally
The auditorium uses artificial methods such as air conditioned
systems during programs
Lighting provided is both natural and artificial

Natural ventilation and lighting provided in both

upper and lower floors of the buildings

VOLUME AND SCALE-HUMAN

area of one human being for seating-0.36 msq
The optimum area to be provided is to be 0.64 msq
The circulation spaces are to be equal to the seating area
provided to each person

Ceiling heights provided are

very large this is done to
enhance the strength of the
space but can also act as an
acoustical drawback affecting
the intensity of sound
received

The ceiling heights and seating heights of the auditorium is

designed keeping the human scale in mind

SOUND IN ENCLOSED SPACES

As the distance between the source and the receiver
increases the intensity of the sound decreases
This problem can be solved by introducing artificial
reflecting surfaces between the path of travel of sound
SOURCE

REFLECTION OF
SOUND DIAGRAM

The wave front of the sound waves when reflected

from a convex surface is larger thereby the intensity of
sound is very low , the opposite happens in case of a
concave surface thereby a plane surface is appropriate
Reflection of sound in TownHall
The surface is plane and hence the
wavefront is optimum for appropriate
intensity of sound

SHAPE OF THE AUDITORIUM-IMPROVIZING

CALCULATE THE RT VALUE AND TALK BOUT SURFACES
RT = (0.16 * V) / A
RT Reverberation time
V volume of the room in cu.m.
A Absorption area in sabins
A = S * alpha
A and B Square and Rectangular shaped are
appropriate
C If the depth of the room is too much then there
arises a defect, Flutter Echo. When the room is
disproportionately long.
D When curved surfaces are present, the sound
tends to travel along the curved surface. This
results in a defect, Creeping of sound. Curved walls
cause uneven distribution of sound energy
resulting in variation in loudness
E The angle from the centre of the stage to the
end of seats should be 120deg

Type B

SEATING
Seating provided for 620 persons with an area of
0.6*0.6 each
Line of Sight Seating arrangement should be
such that line of sight of the person sitting should
not be blocked by the person in front.
B
Line of Sound When sound waves are blocked
A
due to a tall person in front, the person behind is
in sound shadow region.
Unobstructed sound should be provided hence
Line of sight and line of sound in plan
height of
and section

Seating and circulation spaces in plan

Rows are accessed from both

sides hence maximum number
of seats to be placed in each
row is 14.
No. of seats provided is 15

A curvilinear pattern for seating is better

than a linear pattern as it gives a better
view of the stage making it the focal point
Linear pattern have more chances of Flutter
Echo

A two layer seating arrangement is

provided in order to accommodate
the number of people required
Without hindering the line of site of
each indivisual

ROOF SCAPE OF THE BUILDING

The roofs of both the ground floor

and upper floor are provided such
that the focus is towards the
listener by inclining it towards the
listeners

MATERIAL USED AND SURFACE TREATMENT

The surface of the walls at the
back of the hall and on the
upper floor are provided with
openings which are of a small
diameter which help enhance
the intensity of hound

The profille of the roof helps in direccting the sound

towards the receiver increasing the intensity of the
sound

SCOPE FOR IMPROVEMENT

The distance between the centre of the stage and the end of the seats is 25m which is
higher tthan an optimum of 23m.decreasing this distance would enable better hearing .
The number of seats in each row of the system having both sides of the isle open is 15 which
crosses the optimum of 14 nos. This can cause trouble in the circulation system internally
while people are walking around looking for their seats
The distances and heights between the receiver and the source being large , the intensity of
sound received Is very low, this can be solved by introducing some relecting surfaces such as
false ceilings.
Materials which have properties that solve accoustical problems such as reflectors can also
be used to solve the above problem
The persentage of spaces for circulation can be increased externally in order to enable easy
movement of people bby avoiding crowding at various points.
