Moorestown Community House on the mend

With water and smoke damage from Novembers fire remediated, buildings roof repair now underway
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
It has been two months since
fire ripped through the east attic
of the Moorestown Community
House. Luckily, the building sustained little damage and the community came together to help.
Since the fire, the MCH has
been hard at work trying to get
everything open and back up and
running. The Sun went to the
MCH to get an update on how
things have been progressing. So
far, parts of the MCH are open
and being used, the water and
smoke damage has been remediated and now it is on to repairing
the roof.
The MCH board is asking for
those who wish to help to donate
toward its restoration campaign,
which was in place long before
the fire. The restoration campaign is seeking $2 million to help
update the building so it can continue to be a non-profit center
serving the community. So far it
has raised $917,000.
It is important for people to
give to our restoration campaign,
which was already in place before
the fire, to update, restore and upgrade the building to be useable
for the next generation and generations to come, Executive Director Brad Kenney said.
The fire began on Nov. 17 in the

second floor east room attic. The
Moorestown Fire Department
was quick to arrive on scene,
along with many surrounding
area fire departments, to squelch
the two-alarm fire.
The departments were able to
contain the fire to that room,
making it the only area with fire
damage. The rooms below sustained smoke and water damage,
but other areas of the building,
such as the ballroom and garden

room, were unaffected.

The next day, repair companies
were already at the MCH looking
at damage and seeing what could
be done.
Kenney wanted residents to
know that the MCH Board of
Trustees was very responsible to
make sure there was adequate insurance coverage for the building, which covers the replacement of what was previously
there before the fire, he said.

So far, the smoke and water

damage to the lower rooms, the
kitchen and the club room has
been remediated, and the initial
demolition of the areas affected
has been completed as well. The
roofing is being worked on, repairing holes made by the firefighting efforts and replacing the
old slate roof.
The goal is to reuse as much of
our original slate as possible and
have that part of the building

look the same as it did before the

fire, Kenney said.
After the roof is sealed, the
restoration will continue to other
parts of the building. Recentlynamed board president Haynes
Hendrickson said the restoration
will be done in phases. The hope
is to have each part open to the
public and organizations as it is
fixed.

Bela Delvadia is Student Citizen of Year

Teen uses passion for volunteering to help those less fortunate in Moorestown
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestown High School senior Bela
Delvadia has a passion for volunteering.
She grew up wanting to give back to those
less fortunate and in 2010 learned about
true poverty during one of her trips
abroad. That trip sparked her desire to do
more for those in need.
Delvadias drive and hard work have
paid off, as the Moorestown Service Clubs
Council named her the 2016 Moorestown
Student Citizen of the Year. She will be
honored for all of her good work in the
community at a dinner on Wednesday, Feb.
3.
I feel very honored. It was kind of a surprise (receiving the award). Doing service
is something that I naturally do, without a

second thought. I just sign up and help others, Delvadia said.

When Delvadia is not in the classroom,
she is giving back to both the Moorestown
community and the community-at-large.
She believes that in giving back, you get
more.
I think, since weve been given so much
with our community, we should give back
to everyone around us and show everyone
in our community that we care, Delvadia
said.
Each summer, she has volunteered in the
childrens department at the Moorestown
library. While in school, she has volunteered more than 600 hours at many community events through the Interact Club
such as Acapella for Autism, Soup for the
Soul, book fairs and the Special Education
Advisory Council. She also co-created a

shoe drive to send gently-used shoes to families in Haiti through the

Souls4Soles Organization. She is also a volunteer with the local emergency medical squad.
Delvadias
volunteerism spreads beyond
Moorestown. She has
also travelled abroad to
participate in service

projects. In 2010, she
raised around $5,000 for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation while summiting Mount Kilimanjaro. In the summer of 2014, Delvadia

The man admitted before the

Mount Laurel in Burlington

County and Haddonfield and
Voorhees in Camden County.
Most of the homes were in upscale neighborhoods, near a golf
course or wooded lot with minimal views, and were secluded
from neighboring properties.
At the targeted homes, phone
and alarm wires were cut, and
entry was often made by smashing a rear sliding door. The defendants would use a police radio to
monitor emergency communications. The burglaries were committed while the residents were
not at home.
Items stolen included jewelry,
watches, furs, coins, crystal, silverware, handbags, firearms,
camera equipment and other
electronics.
Once the similarities in the
burglaries were discovered, a
task force was formed consisting
of law enforcement agencies from
the affected towns, as well as the
Camden County Prosecutors Office.
A break in the case came after
DNA from the convicted man was
found on a flashlight left behind
during one of the Moorestown
burglaries. From there, the investigation shifted to the analysis of
more than 9,000 phone calls and
text messages, as well as surveillance.
Many of the items were
pawned. Even so, more than 500
stolen items were recovered.
Some of them were buried in the
convicted mans yard and others
were hidden in an abandoned
building in Philadelphia.
The man was arrested on Sept.
5, 2012, along with another Medford man. The second convicted
man pled guilty on May 20, 2015,
to two counts of burglary in exchange for five years of probation
and 364 days in the Burlington
County Jail.

pneumonia that created the

empyema, and there was an issue
that caused that to burst She
needed a miracle. She needed to
respond. A lot of crazy stuff happened, and with some amazing
doctors, they tried ideas that
worked, Laurie said.
In what Laurie called a miracle, Victoria made a complete
turn around. She went from a
ventilator, to a tracheostomy
tube, then inpatient rehab and
outpatient rehab. She was in the
hospital for two months and in
outpatient treatment for two
months, but missed just one semester of college.
She had to re-learn to walk,
dress herself, get out of bed, pretty much everything because her
muscles had atrophied She
wasnt back on her feet until
about summer time Her lungs
will never be 100 percent, but they
are amazingly in the 90th percentile. I cant believe how much
she recovered, Laurie said.
During her time at the hospital, Victoria had used more than
100 units of blood, which consti-

tutes three people per unit of

blood and even more when doctors used immunoglobulin therapy. Laurie described this as an antibody cocktail from more than
1,000 people, which helps to boost
the immune system.
Laurie realized how much
blood was needed by the hospitals
for patients and decided to host a
blood drive while Victoria was in
the hospital and continued it last
year.
So many people wanted to do
something to help when she was
sick, and there is only so much
people can do, so I came up with
the (blood drive) idea. It seemed
like every hour another bag of
blood, so I thought lets replenish
this for people who might need it
in the future, Laurie said.
For the first blood drive, staff
from the hospital and people from
all over New Jersey came to donate. Last year, there wasnt as
much, so Laurie is hoping for
numbers to spike once again at
this years blood drive.
Were trying to hype it up a lot
this year and get the numbers up
again. We cant stress how much
we feel we owe everyone We
want others to have the same opportunity to recover like she did
and make that available for people, Laurie said.

People can sign up for an appointment

online
at
www.tinyurl.com/vicpalko
or
just show up to donate. Those donating are recommended to be
heavier than 120 pounds, bring a
photo ID, hydrate and eat a good
meal beforehand.
Blood will go toward the Community Blood Council of New
Jersey, a non-profit organization
that collects and provides blood
support for the state.
Celebrating her 22nd birthday
on Monday, Victoria is now completely healthy. She has continued
her education at the University of
Delaware, where she studies fashion merchandising, making up
classes in the winter and summer.
She recently accomplished one of
her dreams, studying abroad, as
she was studying in Paris during
