TYPES OF INFORMATION SYSTEM (Examples)
1. Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)
A. PayPal

The world's first, successful, instant, and secure online payment service.
With PayPal, anyone can register to send and receive payments through the Internet.
This service has gained most of its popularity on auction sites like eBay, but can also
be used for simple transactions between any two people in the world that have access

to the Internet.
Users have found this to be a safe, fast, easy, convenient, and inexpensive way to

distribute money in the digital world.

PayPal's service is free to most consumers, although there can be small service fees to

businesses that decide to use it for a large number of transactions.

PayPal only requires that users have either a valid credit card or active checking
account.

B. Flight/Airline Reservation System (IBM Airline Control Program)

Part of the so-called passenger service systems (PSS), which are applications
supporting the direct contact with the passenger.
Computer reservation system is used for the reservations of a particular airline and
interfaces with a global distribution system (GDS) which supports travel agencies and
other distribution channels in making reservations for most major airlines in a single
system.

2. Process Control Systems (PCS)

A. Glues and Adhesives Production

Process Control System is an integrated hardware and software system specifically

engineered to monitor, evaluate, and regulate complex, large-scale processes.

(Glue Production)
Some applications require that specific quantities of raw materials be combined in

specific ways for particular durations to produce an intermediate or end result.

One example is the production of adhesives and glues, which normally require the
mixing of raw materials in a heated vessel for a period of time to form a quantity of

end product.
B. Plastic Production

(Plastic Production)

Often, a physical system is represented through variables that are smooth and

uninterrupted in time.
The control of the water temperature in a heating jacket, for example, is an example

of continuous process control.

Some important continuous processes are the production of fuels, chemicals and

plastics.
Continuous processes in manufacturing are used to produce very large quantities of

product per year.

3. Enterprise Collaboration Systems (ECS)
A. Microsoft OneDrive (File Sharing)

Microsoft's online backup and syncing service is still very flexible and cross-platform
capable, with syncing and access apps not only for PCs, but also for Macs, Androids,

iOS devices, and Windows Phones.

OneDrive serves a lot of functions.
If you just want access to documents or media files, it offers simple online
storage accessible from the Web.
If you want the same set of files replicated on multiple PCs, it provides folder
syncing.
For users of Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows Phone, it backs up
device settings, including things like lock-screen and desktop-background
images and email logins.

B. Skype (Video Conferencing)

Skype is a software program, available for both computers and mobile devices, that
facilitates free or low-cost communication between Skype users, as well as between
Skype users and phones. Skype has several major functions that help it connect people all
over the world via chat, voice and video.
Functions:
Skype's most basic function -- and one that is free to use -- is computer-tocomputer calls.
Another free Skype feature is text-based chat between users. Similar to instant
messaging clients such as Windows Live Messenger and AIM, it's possible to chat
with users in your Skype contacts list.
It's also possible to send text messages to cellphones around the world with
Skype. After entering your phone number -- and country code, if necessary -- type
a short message in the blank field at the bottom of the window, as you would do if
you were chatting with someone.

4. Management Information System (MIS)

A. Human Resource Management Information System

Refers to the systems and processes at the intersection between human resource

management (HRM) and information technology.

Functions:
Payroll
Time and attendance
Performance appraisal
Benefits administration
Recruiting/Learning management
Performance record
Absence management
The function of human resources (HR) departments is administrative and common to
all organizations.

Management of "human capital" progressed to an imperative and complex process.

The HR function consists of tracking existing employee data which traditionally
includes personal histories, skills, capabilities, accomplishments and salary.

B. Marketing Information System

System in which marketing data is formally gathered, stored, analyzed and distributed
to managers in accordance with their informational needs on a regular basis.
Functions:
Monitors the marketing environment for changes in buyer behavior
competition, technology, economic conditions, and government policies.
Defines and differentiates the value proposition that one organization provides
with respect to another
Defines competitive advantage

5. Decision Support Systems

A. Decision Support System for Agro-technology Transfer (DSSAT)

A set of computer programs for simulating agricultural crop growth.

Functions:
It has been used in over 100 countries by agronomists for evaluating farming
methods
One application has been assessing the possible impacts on agriculture of
climate change and testing adaptation methods.
Assessment of several agricultural production systems around the world to
facilitate decision-making at the farm and policy levels.

B. Clinical Decision Support System for Medical Diagnosis

A health information technology system that is designed to provide physicians and

other health professionals with clinical decision support (CDS), that is, assistance

with clinical decision-making tasks

Clinical Decision Support systems link health observations with health knowledge to
influence health choices by clinicians for improved health care.
Functions:
Analyze and reach a diagnosis based on patient data.
Make decisions for the clinician
The clinician interacts with the CDSS, utilizing both their own knowledge and
the CDSS, to make a better analysis of the patient's data.
CDSS make suggestions for the clinician to look through, and the clinician is
expected to pick out useful information from the presented results.
