The document provides general field welding instructions for Vermeer Corporation. It outlines requirements for base metal preparation such as cleaning surfaces within 1/2 inch of welds. A minimum preheat of 50°F and maximum interpass temperature of 500°F is specified. Welding should use E7018 electrodes between 1/8 and 5/32 inch in size with DC electrode positive polarity at 110-135 or 125-200 amps depending on electrode size. Welding positions are limited to flat, horizontal, or vertical up. Electrodes must meet specifications and be stored properly. All welding must be done by qualified welders and meet acceptance criteria in Vermeer standards.

Vermeer Corporation General Field Welding Instructions
Base Metal Preparation:
Surfaces within inch [12 mm] of any weld location shall be free from any material that will prevent proper welding. This includes moisture, loose or thick mill scale, paint, slag, heavy rust, grease, dirt, or any other foreign material that will adversely affect the quality or strength of the weld. Before welding, the base metal within 3 inches [76mm] of the weld joint in all directions must be preheated to above the minimum preheat temperature before welding or tacking. During welding, the base metal temperature must be maintained above the minimum preheat but below the maximum interpass temperatures. Thus, when multi-pass welding is required, the base metal may need to be reheated or allowed to cool between passes. Minimum Preheat: 50F [10C] Maximum Interpass: 500F [260C] Weld Parameters for Shielded Metal Arc Welding [Manual Metal Arc]: Electrode: AWS classification E7018 or equivalent Size: 1/8" [3.2 mm] or 5/32 [4.0 mm] Polarity: Direct Current Electrode Positive Amperage: 110-135 amps for 1/8 [3.2mm] and 125-200 amps for 5/32 [4.0mm] Position: All welding shall be in the flat, horizontal, or vertical up position. No down hill welding is permissible. Electrode Condition: All electrodes shall conform to AWS specification A5.1 and should be purchased in hermetically sealed containers or should be baked by the user in an oven one hour between 500F [260C] and 800F [430C] prior to use. Immediately after opening the hermetically sealed container, electrodes should be stored in ovens held at a temperature of at least 250F [120C]. After hermetically sealed containers are opened or after electrodes are removed from baking or storage ovens, the electrode exposure to the atmosphere should not exceed 4 hours. If electrodes have been exposed to the atmosphere more than 4 hours they shall be rebaked in an oven one hour between 500F [260C] and 800F [430C]. Electrodes should be rebaked no more than once. Electrodes that have been wet shall not be used. Certifications: All welding shall be performed by a welder qualified in the position and process used to AWS D14.3/D14.3M, Specification for Welding Earthmoving, Construction, and Agriculture Equipment or one of the following: AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, ISO 9606-1. Safety: The company performing the welding is responsible for supplying the appropriate protective equipment, complying with the appropriate safety regulations (e.g. ANSI Z49.1), and taking appropriate measures to protect their personnel in the welding environment. Limitations: This welding procedure is intended for use only with Vermeer Corporation supplied components and as directed by Vermeer Corporation.
Weld Quality Acceptance Criteria:
All welding shall be in accordance with Figure 4.4 Weld Quality Acceptance Criteria of Vermeer Welding Standards.
