BASTILLE DAY
many french people associated the famous medieval fortress and prison
in paris with the harsh rule of the bourbon monarchy of the late 1700s.
this drink celebrates july 14, 1789, the day the troops stormed the bastille,
a pivotal event at the beginning of the french revolution.

THE SIDECAR
created during wwii, there is controversy surrounding the precise origins of the
sidecar. the ritz hotel in paris claims to have introduced it, some credit a british
inventor and others attribute it to an american army captain stationed in paris. most
agree it rose to fame at harrys new york bar in paris and is still a refreshing classic.
CHRYSANTHEMUM 1914
a very popular sip in the american bar of the german ocean liner, the ss europa, which
served the third reich until it was confiscated by the us in 1945. after taking part in
us troop movement, the ss europa was renamed the ss libert, and served passengers to
france until it hit the scrap yards in 1962.
THE BOULEVARDIER
this dates back to 1927. there is debate whether this was created by
harry mcelhone, founder and proprietor of harrys new york bar in paris,
or erksine gwynne, an american expatriate who started a literary magazine
called the boulevardier.
HANKY-PANKY
this drink is the creation of ada coley coleman, the only female head bartender
at the savoy hotel in london. she helped train her famous successor,
harry craddock, who wrote the savoy cocktail book, which included
this and many other of colemans recipes.
