PART 2: (this part is compulsory for all students)

Design and Implementation of a Wireless
Acoustic Communication System
Introduction
This coursework project aims to design and implement an end-to-end digital
communication system over a poor quality communication channel.
The end goal is to achieve wireless acoustic communication system, in which a
speaker and a microphone are employed as the transmitting and receiving
antennas respectively. You will use Matlabs built-in capabilities that let you
emit a sound from the computer speaker, and record a sound incident upon the
microphone (e.g. see functions soundsc, sound, wavread, auread, . . .).
Many sources of noise and distortion will be present in this system, among
them, non-ideal and/or nonlinear speaker and microphone frequency responses,
multipath propagation between the speaker and the microphone, propagation
delay, and ambient noise.
Your goal should be to overcome these challenges and design and implement a
system that achieves high bit rate throughput and reliable transmission.
You have full control over what to choose for the transmit filter, modulator,
receive filter, and equalizer, and you are encouraged to try a number of
different combinations of these. It is also expected that you will make smart
choices about the type(s) of modulation to choose, and compare their
performances as well. This will involve a significant amount of background
research.
As part of the project, you may wish to start by modelling the acoustic
communication system and channel in MATLAB before implementing the
final physical system. In this case, you should carefully state your choice of
non-ideal channel characteristics used.
Important points:
Do not forget practical necessities such as carrier and symbol
synchronization, and automatic gain control. For instance, it will be helpful
if you use a training (known) sequence or tone, to help in symbol timing
and also with equalization (see the figure below, which does not show
carrier synchronization or AGC blocks). You will need to research these
issues.
You are required not to use data compression or error correction/detection
coding.

Deliverables and Marking Scheme

You are required to submit a report of up to 12 pages for each group.

The report should include:
1. Your overall design (typically a schematic diagram).

[20 Marks]

2. A description of the overall purpose of each component in the design and

why it is required.
[30 Marks]
3. A detailed description of the design choices and calculations for each
component and for the system as a whole.
[30 Marks]
4. You will also be required to give a brief demonstration of your system in
the final lab session of the semester.
[20 Marks]
For any further clarification please write Dr Brian Carse on his e-mail address:
Brian.Carse@uwe.ac.uk

Additional Notes
Your research will draw on a number of sources of information. You are
welcome to include diagrams from other sources PROVIDED THESE ARE
SUITABLY REFERENCED. The written text MUST BE YOUR OWN
WORK. Unreferenced diagrams and inclusion of text from other sources (other
than brief referenced quotations) will be treated as intentional plagiarism.
You are to use the Harvard referencing system, details of which can be found
on the UWE website. This is a worldwide standard referencing style.
