More than 200 reported dead in
South Asia after high-magnitude
quake
A magnitude-7.5 earthquake that
struck in northeastern Afghanistan resulted in heavy casualties
Monday. The quake was felt in surrounding areas like Pakistan, India
and Tajikistan and has reportedly
resulted in the deaths of over 200
people, according to early reports
from Afghan, Pakistani and Indian
officials. That estimate is likely to
rise in the coming days due to a lack
of communication in some hard-hit
rural areas.
The epicenter was located nearly
140 miles underground, according
to the United States Geological
Survey, and hit close to the Afghan
city of Jarm. This quake is being
compared to the magnitude-7.6
earthquake that struck in nearby
Kashmir 10 years ago, which led to
18,000 deaths.
Mondays quake is being called
stronger than the 2005 incident in
Kashmir, but USGS officials assessed
that there was less surface damage
because of its depth.
Reports have stated that panic was
a major cause of injury and death.
A stampede in a northern Afghan
town resulted in the deaths of 12
girls who were all trying to evacuate
their school.

The University of Mississippi takes
down state flag
For months, controversy surrounding the Confederate flag has sparked
protest. Now, the University of Mississippi, often known as Ole Miss, has
taken down Mississippis state flag,
which flashes the Confederate symbol
in its top left corner.
The removal was brought about by
the efforts of the Associated Student
Body, Ole Miss student government.
Last week the universitys student senate voted 33-15 with one abstention to
request removal of the flag, and it was
taken down by campus police officers
on Monday.
There has been a divide in public
opinion of how the flag removal
should have been handled. Student
Sen. Andrew Soper organized a petition to keep the flag up on campus. It
received over 1,500 votes. He said the
removal should have [been] done
through the state of Mississippi.
Allen Coon, a student senator and
president of the campuss College
Democrats, was one of the leading
supporters of the removal. He told reporters he was surprised and elated
that it actually happened. According
to him, campus police removed the
flag without any announcements.

Officials in northern Nevada are
hoping that a fall hiatus for schools
around the region will stop a norovirus outbreak that has affected over
1,700 faculty and staff. Health officials are saying the virus has grown
at an alarming rate.
Day cares and preschools have
been included in a list of around 20
schools affected by the norovirus,
which can cause nausea, vomiting
and diarrhea.
As of Oct. 23, 17 schools are still
on the outbreak list. Washoe County

Another company
adds competition to
Renos ride-hailing sector
By Marcus Lavergne
Reno has welcomed another ridesharing business to the area a year after
the popular service Uber put its wheels
down in the city. This time, drivers are
rolling in with bright, hot-pink mustaches.
Lyft launched on Friday, Oct. 16. While
sharing rides with potential strangers is
increasing in popularity, the company
does still offer private rides. It has built
up a reputation for being more friendly
and easygoing than other ridesharing
competitors and insists that drivers greet
riders with fist bumps and conversation.
Mary Caroline Pruitt, a representative for Lyft, says that a ride with the
companys drivers is not just fun, but
safe as well. The company performs
background checks and driver record

checks before hiring.

Our vision has always been to
reconnect people and communities
through better transportation, Pruitt
said. Weve already heard from many
students across the country that ridehailing allows them to live car-free and
not have to worry about bringing a car
to campus or being able to get a safe ride
home after a night out.
Essentially, businesses like Lyft and
Uber have strived to make rides with
complete strangers much more personable and comfortable. For Lyft, that experience begins before the ride through
the app, where riders can see the name
and profile picture of their driver. Once
the ride is over, both the passenger and
driver can rate the ride.
We didnt just set out to provide a better taxi or black car service, Pruitt said.

Pruitt
noted
that
Lyft is an ideal part-time

people
looking to make extra income i n
their spare time. Drivers arent professionals and around 80% of them drive
15 hours or less a week.

ASUN teaches ins and outs of

caucusing with the mockus
By Jacob Solis
Since the spring, America has been
gripped in campaign fever. Dozens
of candidates from both sides of the
political spectrum have been vying
furiously for the votes of the American
people, but what is it all for?
In Nevada, these candidates are
aiming for victory in the caucus an
age-old tradition of impassioned arguing and standing on one side of the
room to select presidential nominees.
Its a process that confounds many, so
Associated Students of the University
of Nevada pre-empted the confusion
with its very own mock caucus on
Monday, Oct. 26.
The mock caucus, or mockus, was
held in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Centers Rotunda and was put
together by ASUNs Department of
Legislative Affairs. ASUN reached out
to both political parties and other
community organizations, like the
Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, to help put everything together.
For Legislative Affairs Projects Coordinator Rebekah Couper, the event
was a success, being fun, informative
and a convincing method to push
students toward actually caucusing
come February.
Ive had a few people walk and say,
I wasnt gonna go to the caucus, but
now I am, Couper said. Thats the
whole point. If I get one student to go,
its a success.
Couper added that the caucus
allows students voices to be heard
and that rooting for a candidate and
convincing others to caucus for a
candidate is an awesome experience
for anyone.
For the mockus, the 40 or so students who turned up throughout the

Campus police at the University of

Nevada, Reno, has released a mobile
app that puts both campus information and personal safety tools into one
digital package. SafePack is the newest
way Police Services and administration
at UNR are helping students stay safe on
campus.
Unlike some other safety apps that
cater to several different universities
across the nation, SafePacks network
is specific to UNR. The app is also free
to use, unlike safety apps like BlueLight
which charges monthly subscription
fees after a 30-day trial period. Campus
Police Commander Todd Renwick says
UNRPD is simply providing another
resource focused on student safety.
We came up with some funds in
our budget, Renwick said. With some
support from the university we got it
developed and implemented. Our idea
going into this was that it has to be free
of charge for our community.
The app provides a number of services including Safe Ride, a function that
provides contact information and other
resources involving transportation on
and around campus as well as a detailed
listing of campus emergency plans.
One of Renwicks favorite features is
the safety toolbox, which holds a flashlight, alarm and personal safety widgets.
The app has placed each of those things
at a persons fingertips, according to
him, but Renwick likes that the toolbox
contains a command that can send a
persons location to friends as well as
UNRPD.

Fudge went on to win the caucus,

beating out the strong contenders of
strawberries and nuts.
Ultimately though, the point of the
mockus was to teach students what
caucusing is all about. For Courtney McKimmey, a UNR student and president of
Nevada Students for Hillary, the mockus
did just that.
I think for the students that showed
up, it was a good chance to see what
its gonna look like, McKimmey said. I
dont think many students knew exactly
what the caucus was, and I hope we can
have more events like this and get even
more students involved.
McKimmey added that many people
dont know or understand the caucus
system, particularly the fact that you
need to be present at the caucus in order to have your vote counted, unlike a
primary.
But why a caucus in the first place?
Nevada is one of 13 states that uses
the caucus system, according to the Federal Election Commission. Most caucus
states only have a few delegates to give
out during the nominating conventions.

These delegates and superdelegates are

used during the conventions to officially determine who will be each partys
nominee.
In Nevada, caucuses parcel out delegates proportionally, depending on
what percentage of caucus-goers caucus
for a certain candidate. On top of that,
Democratic delegates are joined by socalled superdelegates representatives
of a state who are unbound by the results
of the caucus. After moving through the
county and state party organizations,
these delegates have the final say on
who is nominated by each party to be
standard bearer.
The caucus, as a method of candidateselection, has one real advantage over
the other nominee-selecting process, the
primary. The caucus gives a greater say to
people in rural areas, at least according
to Matt Bai of The New York Times. In Nevada especially, where census data puts
the number of city-dwellers at 88 percent
of the states population, a primary might
unfairly favor the opinions of urban voters who can flex their majority muscles.
Even so, the caucus is esoteric and
often hard to understand, which leaves
many voters scratching their heads and
feeling left out of the process.
Caucuses can be very complicated,

Kentucky and Washington

use both a primary and a
caucus.

Nevada switched from a

primary to a caucusX]!'
putting the state 3rd on the
calendar for primaries and
caucuses nationwide.
to be honest, [but] caucuses are very
important because not many people
participate, said Taslima Shams, president of the UNR Young Democrats.
Even so, some remain unconvinced
that the caucus is the best way to go.
It increases the benefits for the few
people who do [caucus], but maybe Id
prefer to see it go so that we could get
more people involved, so itd be easy
like a primary system, said Legislative
Affairs Director Marissa Crook. I think
caucuses are more engaging than primaries, but I think primaries engage more
people.
Nevadas Democratic caucus is on
Saturday, Feb. 20, while the Republican
caucus is on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

LEGISLATION
A split senate votes to amend
legislative intern rules
In an 11-7 vote, the Associated Students of the University
of Nevada voted to change the
rules for legislative interns in
the Statutes of the Associated
Students.
Though it was initially an
open-and-shut
procedural
vote, senators quickly began
to split over a disagreement
surrounding a provision in the
bill that requires interns to be
present at at least one senate
meeting. The seven senators
who voted against the measure
felt that interns, who often go
on to run for senate themselves,
should be required to attend at
least two or three meetings.
The last thing I would want
is for an intern to say, well
thats annoying, said Sen.
Sadie Fienberg of the School
of Journalism. I would only
want someone to be an intern
if theyre willing to put out the
effort and if theyre willing to
show up. The fact that theres
only a couple [interns] here
right now and none of them
even have anything to say
about [the bill] just shows that
they need to come to more senate meetings.
The bills author, Sen. Millie
Carro of the College of Education and head of the internship
program, explained that the bill
was worded in such a way to
provide leeway for interns who
might have class during meetings. Even so, senators went
back and forth on the issue for
more than 15 minutes before
ending the discussion and putting it to a vote.

Lyft is the second largest ride-hailing company to operate in Nevada, the first being
competitor Uber.

Cutler experienced a tragedy years

ago that still sits in his mind today. He
remembers the exact date as well June
17, 1970. Cutler was out driving when a
car pulled into his lane. He rolled his car,
killing his best friend.
I havent had a drink since, Cutler
said. When I see a person drunk driving,
I call the police. I take that real personally. Id rather give a ride for free, you
know, like I said it really isnt about the
money.
For drivers like Cutler, a bonus is meeting new people. When he drove cabs,

Trees, research and

pedestrians receive ASUNs
blessing
In a unanimous vote, the senate approved two resolutions
dealing with trees on campus.
Both resolutions were written
by Sen. Cecilia Cervantes of
the College of Liberal Arts. The
first put ASUN support behind
efforts to stop erosion near the
intramural fields by planting
trees. The second would help
label some of the 3,300 trees on
the University of Nevada, Renos
campus.
In terms of research, the senate passed another piece of legislation in favor of ASUN funding for research opportunities
abroad. The resolution followed
another bill that was passed two
weeks ago that allotted $10,000
of ASUN funds for research
opportunities abroad. Because
the former was actual binding
legislation, this resolution was
little more than a final affirmation of ASUNs intent to support
research.
Finally, the senate passed a
resolution in favor of creating
a pedestrian-friendly campus.
The resolution, authored by
Sen. Rachel Lucas of the College
of Engineering, was fairly cutand-dry. The two-page document listed the various efforts
by the university to increase
pedestrian safety and called for
more of the same kind of efforts.

Lyft

For Irvin Cutler, a 62-year-old Lyft

driver, it wasnt really about the money,
but instead, a break from the norm.
Cutler discussed how he started driving
for a change of pace as Pink Floyd blared
over the radio.
Because drivers use their own vehicles,
the appearance and functionality of
the ride is important. Cutler says that
because hes retired he has plenty of time
for maintenance. Although he owns dogs,
which he calls his German Shedders,
he knows that keeping the car clean is
vital to being a successful Lyft driver.
When Lyft came along I thought
maybe I can get some grocery money or
something, Cutler said. I dont know,
just wanted a little extra money or something. I enjoy meeting people.
Cutler was a cab driver in Reno years
ago. He would frequently get ripped off
by passengers who did not have enough
money for their trips.
I got robbed twice, Cutler said.
There were runouts. I know you wont
get that with this cause theres no cash.
With this youre just gonna get a much
nicer clientele.
Cutler didnt drive during this past
weekends Zombie Crawl in downtown
Reno, a popular event among students
at the University of Nevada, Reno, but
knows that his service is important in
times where alcohol may be involved.
Cutler has kids who have graduated and
started their lives, but he says that he
cant emphasize enough how dangerous
drunk driving is.

Pack Internship Grant Program

struggles to find applicants
WEBSITE

Staff Report
The Pack Internship Grant Program has been
struggling to find student applicants for the past
two weeks due to confusion and misconceptions
surrounding the program, according to Associated Students of the University of Nevada Vice
President Jessica Salsman.
The program, run by the University of Nevada,
Renos Career Studio, has partnered with 40 companies to provide 48 paid internships for students
at a rate of $12 an hour for 120 hours. Companies
from all sectors, from finance to politics to art,
are participating in the program according to
Salsman.
Salsman also noted that the lack of applications
is likely due to misconceptions surrounding the
program.
A lot of students dont know about the internships that are available, Salsman said. I think
one of the biggest issues is that students feel too
intimidated to apply for the internships because
they dont think theyre going to get them, or they
dont know the process.

Salsman added that seniors can still apply for
the program even if theyre not taking 15 credits

semester.
The program was put into motion at the beginning of the last academic year with around 20
companies participating. At its inception, the
program used a panel to decide which students
were accepted into the program. This year, however, Salsman noted that the decision making
falls primarily on the participating companies,
which has streamlined the process.
The application period will remain open until

Thats a pretty cool feature for imminent safety, Renwick said. It sends your
location to us and it also calls us and keeps
an open line. If something were to be happening we would know your location and
could also hear everything thats happening at the same time.
Renwick brought particular focus to
another tool that he hopes will draw
more attention to the universitys special
emergency plans. Renwick said the app
gives you a constant reminder on what to
do and how to behave in those situations.
Right at your fingertips you can see
plans for a bomb threat, a building evacuation, even a criminal or critical incident,
which is something most people dont ever
think about or dont really spend time to
go explore or learn, Renwick said.
Earlier this year, results from a sexual
assault survey conducted last fall revealed
that around 80 percent of students believe
the campus is safe. Renwick said that the
statistics show that most universities are
generally free of danger, but for him, the
SafePack app is just another reliable option for students to take advantage of at
UNR.
SafePack can be downloaded from app
stores on both iOS and Android devices.

incorporated into art pieces at
the Holland Project for its sixth
annual Stranger Show on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Stranger Show is a program run collaboratively by Hug High School and the Nevada
Museum of Art. The high school art students are
paired with local artists to create pieces under
the theme of strange. All participants volunteer, so there is no selection process and the
opportunity is open to the students interests,
although most of the students involved are in AP
art classes.
Jen Johanson, an art and design teacher at
Hug High School, said students are given a
unique opportunity to network with artists and
develop their skills in ways they might not have

been able to develop outside the classroom. She

has been able to not only watch students refine
their abilities and expand their artistic horizons
over the years, but also their relationships with
their mentors.
Theres no other experience like it for students that Ive ever seen, Johanson said. It
gives them real-world connections outside of
their education that they can use for the rest of
their lifetime.
Around 20 artists help the teenagers within the
time frame of a month, and the Nevada Museum
of Art provides the materials and space needed
to complete the pieces. By the end of students
work, their art is displayed at the Holland Project
and a winner is chosen by a jury to win $100 gift
certificates to the E.L. Cord Museum School at
the Nevada Museum of Art and to Nevada Fine
Arts, as well as guest passes to the museum.
Claire Munoz, director of the E.L. Cord
Museum School, said her favorite part of the
Stranger Show was watching the students
grow in the program throughout the years. She
said that most of the students that participate
in the show continue their work in the art field
later in life and that some even come back
as mentors. She explained that the theme is
strange is so that students and artists alike
will have to work outside of their comfort zone

to facilitate their ideas.

Strange is kind of this big concept, Munoz
said. But its really like, What is that relationship between these two people that dont know
each other, and now these kids have to bear it
all to this stranger and then they have to work
together.
At the Stranger Show, attendees had a chance
to show their appreciation of the art by voting
for their favorite piece to be chosen for the
audience award. The winner of that prize also
receives $100 gift certificates to the museum
school and Nevada Fine Arts with guest passes
to the Nevada Museum of Art. Both Munoz and
Johanson said that most students will return to
art after the show is over, and they look forward
to seeing what next years students will bring to
the table.
The jurors award went to student Dalia Quintana and artist Jessica White, while the honorable mentions were student Carlos Indo Lopez
and artist Eric Santti, and Anahi Lopez and Amy
Aramanda. The audience awards for this year
went to Lopez and Santti and second place went
to student Irving Vargas and artist Summer Orr.

Guillermo del Toros Crimson Peak disappoints

By Alejandro Montlavo
Although released in October, the month
for horror, Guillermo del Toros Crimson
Peak is oddly light on scares and heavy
on romance. TV spots and trailers market
Crimson Peak as a fright-fest, but in
interviews del Toro uses the term gothic
romance to describe his film. Many fans
were disappointed after seeing it. If youre
looking for scares, perhaps Paranormal
Activity: The Ghost Dimension is more
your speed.
Set in the late 19th century, the film
follows a young Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska), an aspiring writer who falls in
love with the mysterious Thomas Sharpe
(Tom Hiddleston). Sharpe and his chilly
sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain) are traveling the world in hopes of securing financing for Thomas clay-mining machine.
The romance between Edith and Thomas
takes flight quite quickly, but piercing
stares from Lucille foreshadow something
else at work in the shadows. Edith and
Thomas get hitched and she follows him
and Lucille back to the decaying Sharpe
Manor in England. Ghostly warnings and
strange events lead Edith to suspect that

living on Crimson Peak, the hill on which

Sharpe Manor resides, might be fatal.
There are many similarities between
Crimson Peak and del Toros earlier films
such as Pans Labyrinth and The Devils
Backbone, most notably in the top-notch
production design. Production designer
Thomas E. Sanders has created a beautiful
and meticulously detailed 19th-century
world. The Sharpe Manor is a wondrous,
shadowy set, decorated with Victorian
furniture and rusting appliances. In the
main foyer, leaves cascade from high
above in a hole in the roof. Its these small
touches that lend visual depth to many of
the shots. The film is certainly a beautiful
one to look at.
Even during the few creepy scenes,
the design of the ghosts were rotting
and wispy. The choices of color were
also prominent in the horror film, as the
color red was used often, especially in the
seeping red clay that oozes up out of the
ground from the Sharpe Estate. Certain
shots definitely justify spending the extra
money for IMAX.
Unfortunately, the look of the film is its
sole redeeming feature. When it comes to
the script and acting, the film falters. The

two lovers, Wasikowska and Hiddleston,

may be eye candy but some of their lines
were not up to par with the rest of the film.
It was bad enough to induce eye rolls.
Chastain delivers the best performance
of the three, but perhaps thats because
she doesnt have to spout cheesy romantic
cliches. Sons of Anarchy star Charlie
Hunnam plays a supporting role, but most
of his scenes are marred by his inability to
hold a consistent accent.
Not only were there problems in the
script, but the narrative pacing also drew
back the film. With a running time of two
hours, the film drags on in too many spots
and feels its length. But the last half of the
film, when the movie begins to reach its
conclusion, feels rushed. The ending is
predictable, but it wont leave a bad taste
in your mouth.
Guillermo del Toro is a great filmmaker,
capable of creating engrossing and exciting films. Crimson Peak has flashes of
artistry but unfortunately was a disappointment.

Steps towards a fair, happy Homecoming

he mission of Homecoming is to celebrate university traditions and show off

school spirit. The ultimate
goal of Homecoming is to unite the
campus and Wolf Pack community.
The Homecoming packet distributed between teams concisely
stated, To increase participation
and enthusiasm for the Silver and
Blue cup, this 2015 Homecoming
competition will feature an all new
division system based on the size of
the tribe.
In past years it was very obvious
that Homecoming wasnt very
much of a fair competition. It
was more of a Greek community
takeover which left the dorm halls
and other competitors feeling a
sense of frustration toward the
unfair system. It was looked at as
a bought competition, where
Greeks bought whatever they could
to give their team a competitive
edge. The craft stores are flooded
with Greek community members
who try to buy the flashiest items

to put their team ahead in the

competition. Because of the funding
Greek Chapters get, they were able
to easily take over the games and
always come out on top leaving
competitors such as the dorm halls
in the dust.
However, the new implementation of subdivision teams helped
students outside of the Greek
organizations get involved and have
a fair shot at winning a title.
The blue and white divisions
participating in Homecoming
received a much more substantial
turnout than in previous years.
The participants in these divisions
regarded Homecoming as more of a
fair competition this year in which
they were actually excited to be a
part of.
The Associated Students of the
University of Nevada received
thanks from dorm hall staff
members who repeatedly thanked
those in charge of organizing
Homecoming for aiming to make
the games a more fair set of events.

As far as homecoming participation goes, it seemed that the new

changes substantially improved
proud involvement in this years
Homecoming.
In the past, [competitors outside
Greek life] had never really been
included in Homecoming so it
was so great to see them happy to
be included, ASUN Director of
Programming Tazia Statucki said.
However, because attendance
numbers from this years events
have not yet been calculated, there
is no clear evidence that attendance
has significantly improved.
Despite the seeming increase in
Homecoming participation, there is
no denying the fact that ASUN has
significant room for improvements.
Competition is ruthless during
Homecoming week. It seems that
more often than not, teams are
ready to rip each others throats
out instead of remembering we
are all one university. Maybe in the
future promotional Homecoming
videos can be circulated to remind

students to keep the competition

friendly. We are all one big community and Homecoming should do a
better job at reminding us that.
This year the turnout for the
actual Homecoming football game
was pitiful. The stands were barren,
to say the least. It is not ASUNs job
to drag students out to the game.
However, some change needs to
be implemented for future Nevada
generations in order to get the full
Homecoming experience.
It is no secret Homecoming is a
great annual event to promote school
spirit. Although ASUN should always
strive to make each Homecoming
better than the year before, we as a
campus community should applaud
the steps being taken to reclaim
Homecoming as a celebration
that everyone feels welcome to
participate in.

You may not believe it until it happens to you

ou dont believe it until it

happens to you. Its a common phrase that most of us
have probably heard at some
point in life for a multitude of reasons.
It is human nature for people to have
an extremely difficult time believing
things they do not understand.
When I begin to tell people about
my experiences, I
always catch myself
prefacing my stories
with something
along the lines of, I
know you are going
to think Im crazy
and not believe me,
but
From the time
Ali
I moved into my
Schultz
childhood home, I
Schultz Happens never felt at ease. It
is a strange feeling
being so young and being able to
recognize you are uncomfortable in
your own home. When youre young,
especially, home is supposed to serve
as a haven. It should be a place of
solace and security. For my family
and me, however, it was a place of
consistent strange occurrences that
none of us could seem to explain.
It all started when my brother, Eric,
who was 5 years old at the time, awoke

my entire household with a bloodcurdling scream. When my parents

rushed into his bedroom, he was
hiding beneath his sheet covers. When
asked what happened, my brother
hesitantly told us all that he awoke to
a man-like figure standing above him
watching him while he slept. We were
quick to dismiss him. Maybe it was an
imaginary friend or bad dream. But
we still asked him to describe what he
saw. He described the figure of a large
shadow man that stood over him. He
had no eyes, but towered over normalsized people. My parents and I were
startled, of course, but didnt think
much of it.
It wasnt really until the third or
fourth time my brother experienced
this terrifying occurrence that I started
to worry, but in the back of my mind
I always kept telling myself that this
couldnt be possible. A shadow man
appearing in my little brothers room?
Sounds absolutely absurd. It wasnt
until my freshman year in high school
when my world was turned upside
down.
I would come home from school,
alone in my house, and hear constant
whispers. I would wake up in the
middle of the night to the feeling of
someone standing over me. I thought
I was going crazy. I felt so uncomfort-

able in my own home.

I would fall asleep at night and wake
up to the same womans voice whispering over and over again. I distinctly
remember a time where my best
friend, Lexi, came over after we both
got off work. It was a sweltering Las
Vegas summer day and we were both
beyond the point of exhaustion. It only
seemed necessary for us to take a nap.
We lay down, talked for a little about
our days and then both fell into a light
sleep. We were suddenly awoken to the
feeling of a woman breathing on our
face while she whispered and laughed.
Her voice was so close and distinct
that I felt if I were to reach out, I could
touch the lady. The worst part was Lexi
heard it too. It was now apparent to me
that none of this was just in my head
anymore. Lexi, still my best friend,
has yet to sleep at my house since this
occurrence.
It was like I was constantly being
watched in my house. It seemed like
every day there was a new occurrence,
and the absolute worst part of this
all is no matter how many friends of
mine refused to come over anymore
or how many times my brother and
I would tell my parents something
was terribly wrong, they refused to
believe us. They refused to believe in
something they couldnt concretely

explain, until one day my dad came

home from work to an empty house,
or so he thought. He found my dog, a
young Australian Shepherd with the
temperament of an angel who would
not hurt a fly, at the bottom of my
stairs with all hairs standing up on her
back and growling as if someone broke
into our house. My dad, clearly startled
by my dog, froze in his tracks and from
all different directions heard over and
over again in different voices, I think
he is home, I think he is home.
From then on it was a never-ending
surge of hauntings. Cabinets would
open and shut throughout my house,
my brother, now creeping into his
teenage years, was still seeing the
shadow man, lights would go out,
and the worst part was the whispers
wouldnt stop.
When I moved away to college it
only got worse. My brother started
seeing the man everywhere and both
my parents were finally convinced of
the hauntings.
The final straw came one day when
my brother got out of the shower,
got dressed and looked in the mirror
to brush his teeth when he saw the
shadow man behind him staring and
grinning. He did the only thing he
could do for others to believe him and
took a picture. In the background of

the picture you can see the outline of

the shadow mans face.
We now had substantial proof that
everything we were experiencing was
real. We did not know what to do. We
had to call someone in to bless our
home. We were referred to a reputable psychic who was skilled in sage
blessings. I will admit, I was hesitant
at first, but I felt we didnt have many
other options. She too felt the lingering
strong presence that was in our home.
After the blessing, there has no longer
been any activity. For the first time in
my entire life, I can feel at peace in my
own home. I do not have the feeling of
constantly being watched nor do I feel
panicked when at home.
My message for the skeptics is
simple: Dont totally disregard the
paranormal because it is something
you dont necessarily understand. Too
often people just dismiss things they
have never experienced firsthand. I
cant explain it myself. I dont know
why whatever it was chose my
family and me; I just know that what I
experienced was real. Just because we
do not understand certain things does
not mean they arent all around us.

The potential sixthsense lies within us all

Stay in this Halloween

to enjoy the classics!

very October, movie theaters

from coast to coast are flooded
with new horror films. Our
generation sees an average of
30-50 horror movies released each year,
most of them during this month. This
very precise timing is not because studios want to get their movies out before
the Oscars deadline.
Instead people like to
watch scary movies
around Halloween,
and theyre willing
to sacrifice quality
for jump scares and
ghost stories.
Unfortunately,
horror movies have
Ryan
become eerily similar
Suppe
to the experience of
going to a haunted
house or watching supernatural videos
on YouTube. You watch it for the sole
purpose of being scared. Last week, the
sixth installment of the Paranormal
Activity series was released.
The scariest part of the movie for me
is that as of Oct. 26, it grossed more than
double its budget in revenue at the box
office. The first Paranormal Activity was
quite enough, yet they continue to be

made. I dont understand. You can get

the same garbage on Ghost Hunters
for free!
October is about pretty leaves,
pumpkin carving, football and ABC
Familys 13 Nights of Halloween.
Dont be tricked into thinking you
have to go see a crappy scary movie,
thats what summer blockbusters are for.
The only good movie to ever come out
in October is Halloween. And Ill give
it a free pass for pandering because its
literally called Halloween.
The Exorcist (December 26, 1973),
The Amityville Horror (July 27, 1979)
and Poltergeist (June 4, 1982) are
great horror films that werent made in
two weeks just to earn a quick buck in
October.
These are the movies Ill be watching
at home with three locks on my front
door and blankets half-covering my
face.
This year, instead of going to the
theater to see a scary movie, stay home
and watch a classic. Go to Recycled
Records and pick one up for five bucks
or find one on Netflix. Dont waste your
money on Paranormal Activity 6 or
7 or 15 because its not going to be any
good, I promise.

Or, if you want to see something

REALLY scary, watch a documentary
about the island of garbage humans
have created in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean twice the size of Texas. Now thats
scary!
Heres some of my favorite stuff to
watch around Halloween (if its marked
with a * its on Netflix!):

SCARY:
The Exorcist (1973), The Shining
(1980), The Blair Witch Project (1999),
Scream * (1996), The Grudge (2004), The
Conjuring (2013), Rosemarys Baby *
(1968), 28 Days Later (2002), The Omen
* (1976), The Ring (2002), The Twilight
Zone TV series * (1959-1964)

NOT SO SCARY:
The Goonies (1985), Monster House
(2006), Donnie Darko (2001), Paranorman (2012), Hocus Pocus (1993), Night
of the Living Dead (1968), The Addams
Family * (1993), Beetlejuice (1988),
Shaun of the Dead (2004), Tower of
Terror (1997)

any people question the

credibility of mediums
and their ability to communicate with spirits.
This is largely because the idea of
talking to the dead scares people and
they close their mind to the possibility. However, mediums have learned
to channel their
energies, and the
real ones can help
the departed share
their message with
humans on Earth.
Society has consistently cast mediums
in a negative light.
This comes from
Madeline
the history of
Purdue
forbidden practices
of the supernatural
powers, the most common being
witchcraft.
Mediums are seen as dirty frauds
that manipulate vulnerable people to
make a buck. This is easy to believe
because there are scammers who fake
their ability, and these people have
caused mediums to be stereotyped
as nothing more than street-corner
hustlers.
There are easy ways to spot the
fakes. They generally start by asking
questions and making very general
statements. They make a lot of mistakes and try and correct themselves
multiple times. Real mediums state
very specific information that they
could not have possibly known before
because they are strangers.
Another way to spot fake mediums
is if they offer to remove a curse or
put a spell on someone. Spells and
curses are not real things in mediumship. Witches cast spells and remove
curses; mediums do not have that
ability.
It is easy to ignore and discredit this
practice because it sounds crazy, but
this ability is inside of everyone. Deja
vu, or feeling like an experience has
already occurred, is an example of
this ability. Spirits often are the cause
of deja vu and are trying to send a
message. Children have imaginary
friends, which are actually spirits. The
older they grow, the more the ability
fades because it is discouraged.
Dreams are another way of spirits
communicating with people on earth.
For example, when I was young, on
the night of Sept. 10, 2001, I woke up
my parents with a horrible nightmare. I told them that purple planes
were going to crash into buildings
and that my father should not get on
a plane for his business trip in the
morning. He made it through security
just in time to see the second plane
hit the World Trade Center.
There is a sixth sense, but many
turn a blind eye in efforts to claim
their sanity or in fear of facing those
who have died. For some, its too
painful to be able to communicate

with someone they have lost. For others, the idea of communicating with
an intangible person is frightening.
Spirits use energy to communicate
as well, so if a light flickers or a
telephone rings with no caller, this
may be a way of spirits trying to get
attention. Keep an open mind and be
aware of these messages.
Mediums are those who embrace
their ability and improve their
communication skills with spirits.
They are not alone in this journey
and are often aided by at least one
spirit guide. Spirit guides help all who
want to navigate the spiritual world,
not just mediums. If a spirit wants
to contact someone on Earth, they
can go to these spirit guides who will
bring the message to the medium.
Spirit guides will also lead the
medium away from demonized
spirits. These troubled spirits are
angry to be trapped and want to
wreak havoc on Earth. This is where
paranormal activity comes from.
There are different types of
mediums. The primary kind is the
communicator. They relay messages
from spirits to humans and vice
versa.
The second most common medium is the psychic. They can make
predictions of the future based on the
energies sensed in the universe and
the person they are helping.
There are other types of mediums
that can let the spirit talk for themselves using their body as a pathway.
They also could pull the spirit
through the channel and physically
bring the spirit to where they want
to be.
These types of mediumship are
dangerous because the worlds are
meant to be separate, and opening
the channel for good spirits means
the evil ones can come through
too. This takes a lot of control and
training with the help of spirit guides.
Do not become frustrated if a
medium cannot make contact with a
spirit right away, especially right after
a loss. Spirits have to get their bearing
with the afterworld and it might take
a while for them to realize they can
communicate with the living. When
and if they choose to make contact,
they have to find spirit guides who
know of a medium who can help. The
process takes time, so patience is key.
Before visiting mediums, research
to make sure the person is who they
say they are. Obtain multiple verbal
references for credibility. Vulnerability
is blood in the water for frauds, so
control your emotions before entering one of these sessions. Skepticism
is expected, but dont let it get in the
way of an important message.

Come on people, why appropriate when you can appreciate?

alloween is always a crowdfavorite holiday; among the

candy corn, the Zombie
Crawl and a new season of
American Horror Story, whats not to
love?
Personally, Ive been stockpiling
costume ideas for months. We all want
to have that costume:
the one thats talked
about for countless
future Halloweens,
the one that went
above and beyond
in its originality, the
one with the perfect
combination of wit
Rachel
and style. Achieving
Yelverton
this look, however, as

we all discover after about 15 minutes

on Pinterest, is easier said than done.
So now what? You drive your discouraged self down to Party City for one of
those bag costumes your mom never let
you buy because it looked like a real-life
Bratz doll.
But like all things fast and easy in life,
theres a catch. Your Hail Mary attempt
to pull together a funny-yet-cute
costume is someone elses culture and
lifestyle. Cultural appropriation has
been a huge topic in the news recently,
and up until about three months ago
Im willing to bet most of you had never
even heard the term.
For those of you who are still unsure,
cultural appropriation happens when
someone adopts aspects of a culture

that isnt their own. That girl who wore

a bindi to Coachella? She doesnt really
care about the marital ritual behind it.
Your friend who wants to start charging
for henna tattoos? They couldnt tell you
the religious significance surrounding
each design. The double standard
becomes apparent when your harmless
Bob Marley costume features the same
dreadlocks that African-Americans
are constantly chastised for as dirty
and unprofessional, despite an entire
history of meaning.
Its no secret that the United States
has a pretty rich history of patchworking bits of other cultures together to create a perfectly comfy American quilt. As
if the past 240 years werent enough, we
now don sexy Indian, exotic geisha

and naughty sugar skull costumes

that even further debase heritages to
worn-out stereotypes.
Forget the historical accuracy of
these costumes (trust me, Princess
Jasmine wouldnt have worn a crop
top), whether you want to admit it or
not, wearing a sombrero, mustache and
running around with a bag of tortillas is
offensive.
I know there are some of you rolling
your eyes right now thinking this
is a stretch. Its not racist; its just a
joke, right? Cmon, people, we need
to stop perpetuating this crap. All of
these costumes exaggerate and mock
cultural aspects that Western society
has shunned and rejected for centuries.
It can be difficult to understand where

the border between parody and insult

lies, but its not up to you to decide what
is and what is not offensive to another
person.
A cheap laugh isnt worth prolonging
harmful stereotypes. If youre wondering if your costume is appropriating,
ask yourself this: Is this my culture? If
yes, pass Go and collect $200. If no, is
the culture that it does belong to looked
down upon for practicing it? If yes,
youre appropriating. And remember,
if you cant be funny without putting
someone else down, then you just arent
funny.

Butler leads the way in comeback win

RAY LEWIS
By Jack Rieger
Last Saturday, Nevada football reached the lowest point in
Brian Polians head coaching tenure when it lost to the 0-6 Wyoming Cowboys. In the second quarter of this Saturdays game
against Hawaii, the Wolf Pack trailed the Rainbow Warriors 17-0
and was headed for another head-scratching
loss. You could almost feel the disapproval
coming from the boosters in the suites on
the third floor of the stadium.
Then Nevada rallied thanks to a
sideline speech from Don Jackson and
Hasaan Henderson and managed to
score 30 of the games next 33 points.
Running back James Butler led Nevadas
offense with 136 rushing yards and two
touchdowns, including the game clincher
with 2:20 left in the fourth quarter.

OPTIMIST
Its easy to be optimistic when your team
pulls out a fourth-quarter win. Thanks to
some late-game heroics against Hawaii, Nevada
improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference,
which gives them an outside chance at winning the
West Division (although it will probably have to win
the rest of its games to catch San Diego State).
Nevada has embraced its identity as a second-half team
this season, allowing just 16 points in the third and
fourth quarters of conference games. You could
argue that in order to be a good second-half
team you have to be a poor first-half team, and
Nevada has certainly been both this year.
Nevada dominated the ground game from
the opening whistle, finishing with 244 yards
rushing to Hawaiis 34. The difference in the
game was Nevadas ability to create four
turnovers, including the game-clinching
interception by senior linebacker
Jordan Dobrich in the fourth quarter.

All hail St. James!

There is no doubt about it;

Ray Lewis is one of the best
defensive players in NFL history.
However, there is some doubt about
whether or not hes a murderer.
Seriously. In 2000, Lewis was indicted
on charges for murdering two men
with a knife at a party. The charges
were dismissed when Lewis agreed
to testify against his two friends at
the party, even though Lewis suit
was missing and he admitted to lying
about being at the scene of the crime.

SWIMMING & DIVING
The Pacific Invitational, taking place
in Stockton, California, seemed more
like an exhibition match for Nevadas
women swimming and diving team.
They demolished their opponents in a
quick and orderly fashion, tallying 1,020
points. The host of the invitational
was the closest competitor, ending
the event with a lackluster 659 points.
Nevada not only won six out of
their eight events on Friday, but also
obtained six event titles on Saturday.
In other swimming and diving news,
former NCAA All-American standout,
Lauren Lubus, has joined the Wolf Pack
as an assistant coach.

PESSIMIST
Slow starts have really hurt Nevada
this year. The Wolf Pack hasnt scored
a single first quarter point in four
straight games, and opponents have been
first to score in its last seven games.
When asked if his teams slow starts concern
him, Polian responded somewhat defensively.
It takes a series or two to figure out what
the issues are and then you get adjusted Its
not like we went three and out for five straight
series. We made yards we just didnt finish,
and weve got to get that figured out.
Going down 17-0 in the first quarter is not
a recipe for success, especially since Nevada
doesnt have a high-powered throwing
offense. But why is Nevada constantly
digging themselves out of early holes?
Coach Polian acknowledged that the
energy level in the beginning of the game
against Hawaii was lower than expected,
but senior running back Don Jackson rallied
the team.
We needed a little shot in the butt, but
Don gave it to us. Dons best play today may
have been getting everybody up on the
sideline and getting in their shorts a little
bit.

OJ SIMPSON

OJ Simpson has endured

possibly the most polarizing
life of any athlete. Heisman winner,
first overall pick, NFL pro-bowler, NFL
MVP, NFL and college football Hall of
Famer, actor, announcer, robber and
alleged murderer.

FOR WHAT ITS WORTH

Nevadas kicker Brent Zuzo is the most
underrated player on the team. Zuzo kicked
three field goals, and kicked and recovered his
own onside kick against Hawaii.
Nevadas next opponent, Fresno State,
has been an underrated producer of
NFL talent. Derek Carr, Davante Adams,
Logan Mankins and Ryan Mathews have
all played for the Bulldogs in the last 12
years.
After rushing for 134 yards on Saturday, James Butler is now 27th in the
country in rushing yards.

Quote of the Week:

Fear keeps us focused on the past
or worried about the future. If we can
acknowledge our fear, we can realize
that right now we are okay. Right now,
today, we are still alive, and our bodies
are working marvelously. Our eyes
can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears
can still hear the voices of our loved
ones.

SOCCER
The womens soccer team endured
a winless weekend, coming up short
to two Mountain West foes: Fresno
State and San Jose State. In the Fresno
State game, Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey
Quintos faced a host of shots from their
opponent. Bulldogs Myra Delgadillo
received a pass from a teammate and
snuck the only goal of the game past
Quintos. The Pack then traveled to San
Jose, where they were scored on in the
46th and 74th minutes. With this 2-0
loss to San Jose State, the womens
soccer team has officially been counted
out of the postseason. Their final
regular season game will take place
in Las Vegas for the Governors Series
against UNLV.

VOLLEYBALL
The Packs first game of their two-game
home stand against New Mexico didnt
go according to plan, as they came up
short losing in four sets. The team was
led by sophomore Madison Foley and
junior Madison Morell, who recorded
15 kills each. The team relied on setter
Taylar Rothfuss (senior) for an eyeopening 41 assists. Nevada ended their
two-game home stand against Air
Force, where they swept the falcons in
three sets. The team was led by Morell,
who tallied 18 kills and three blocks.
This win over Air Force puts the Packs
women volleyball team record at 9-13
overall and 4-6 in the Mountain West
Conference. They travel to Wyoming
this Thursday to take on the Cowboys.

SHOULD THE NATIONAL LEAGUE INSTITUTE THE DESIGNATED HITTER?

The NL is how baseball is supposed to be. Double switches,
bunts and rearranging lineups around pitching changes. Strategy
is one of the beautiful aspects of baseball and the designated
hitter in a cop-out for hitters who cant play even a little bit of
defense. Real baseball is a two-phase game and a player should
be valued for what he can do with his bat and his glove. Look at
Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner and Dodgers pitcher Zack
Greinke, who are both threats at the plate while being two of
the best pitchers in baseball. Meanwhile, Nationals pitcher Max
Scherzer complained about having to hit. Keep the DH out!

THE WEEKLY DEBATE

Jack
Rieger

Baseballs biggest issue is its drastic decline in offense since the

steroid era ended. In 2014, teams averaged fewer than 4.1 runs
per game (fewest since 1981) and batters hit for a .251 average
(lowest since 1972). The baseball fan doesnt turn on a game to
watch eight scoreless innings; they want to hear the sound of
bat on ball. Cubs manager Joe Maddon is famous for batting the
pitcher eighth instead of ninth so that he can be pinch-hit for one
spot earlier in the game. Yes, its exciting when a pitcher hits a
home run every leap year, but if baseball wants to compete with
footballs popularity then I suggest they adopt the DH.

DICKS PICKS
Chris Dick Blake sets your
fantasy lineup for week eight
STUD
RB Chris Ivory: Ivory has been
a fantasy stud so far this year.
He has earned the lead back role
in New York as he has found the
end zone in three consecutive
weeks. Ivory is a hard downhill
runner and will look to keep
on rolling as he heads into
Oakland in week eight. I look for
the Jets to lean on their starter
as I see Ivory running over a
decent Raiders run defense for
a solid fantasy
afternoon.
Prediction: 21
carries, 112
yards, 1 TD 3
rec, 27 yards

DUD
RB Eddie
Lacy/James
Chris Dick
Starks: I was
Blake
going to pick
Dicks Picks
Eddie Lacy, but
he has been a dud all year. So to
make it interesting, Im including the better back of the two,
James Starks, in this weeks dud
of the week. Denvers defense
has been top three all season
and its even tougher at home.
Aaron Rodgers is going to have
a tough matchup on his hands
and will be even harder without
his run game being effective.
I could see Rodgers having to
throw the ball over 50 times in
this game as the Pack will have
trouble running the ball against
a tough Denver front seven.
Prediction: 20 carries, 37 yards, 5
rec, 33 yards

GOT GUTS?
WR Stefon Diggs: Diggs shined
in his first game as a starter for
the Vikings in week seven as he
ran a flawless route and made
an impressive catch on a 36yard touchdown. He continues
to get better every week and
quarterback Teddy Bridgewater
seems to be starting to favor the
youngster. I see Diggs building
on his recent success with a big
game against the Bears week
eight.
Prediction: 6 rec, 97 yards, 1 TD

NBA PREDICTIONS

Sagebrush forecasts NBA season with opener looming

ROOKIE
OF
THE YEAR

By Neil Patrick Healy

EMMANUEL MUDIAY DENVER NUGGETS

MARIO HEZONJA ORLANDO MAGIC

With the departure of former point guard Ty Lawson, The

Nuggets took Mudiay with the seventh overall pick and it
looks like he will take over the starting point guard role on
opening night. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, he is what NBA
general managers dream about from the point guard position. He is fast, can run the floor, has good ball handling skills
and can get to the rim and draw fouls. Add on his rebounding
and potential to play tough defense against top-tier Western
Conference point guards and he is exactly what the Nuggets
need. He and the freakishly athletic forward Kenneth Faried
and Mudiay will be regulars on SportsCenter.

NBA scouts are calling Hezonja the J.R. Smith of Europe

because of his streaky shooting from three-point land and his cocky
demeanor on and off the court. When asked if he has respect for his
opponent, Hezonja responded, Respect? No I never had respect
to anybody on a basketball court. Whether its a veteran or a young
player standing in front of me, I always have the same goal. I want to
run over everybody. Hezonja was drafted fifth overall by the Magic
this year. Hes a 21-year-old Croatian born player who spent the last
three seasons playing for Barcelona in Spain. Hes also a human
highlight reel.

SIXTH MAN

COREY BREWER HOUSTON ROCKETS

MVP

JAMES HARDEN HOUSTON ROCKETS

FINALS

By Jack Rieger

The Rockets could be bringing in a lot of hardware this

season if things shake up the way theyre supposed to. Like
teammate James Harden, Brewer will benefit from the arrival
of Ty Lawson and Brewer, standing at 6 foot 9 inches, should
be a matchup problem all season. His three-point shooting
leaves a lot to be desired, but dont get it twisted. Brewer gets
buckets. Look for his 11.9 ppg average to go up with Houston
having a capable point guard.

Fear the beard, ladies and gentlemen. After averaging 27

points and seven assists a game last year, Harden came in
second behind Golden States Stephen Curry in one of the
closer and most debated MVP decisions in recent memory.
With Houstons addition of former Denver Nuggets point
guard Ty Lawson, Harden wont be looked to create every
shot for himself. Lawson will make Hardens job a lot easier
and baring another injury to Rockets center Dwight Howard,
Harden will finally put down the Lil B curse so we never have
to hear this weak-ass rapper ever again. NBA fans please stop
making this dude relevant.

WARRIORS/CAVALIERS
Many NBA fans, mostly delusional Laker and Clipper fans,
seem to have forgotten that the Warriors could still ball. You
dont just get lucky and win 67 games and the NBA finals.
The Spurs are the popular pick to come out of the West, but
the Warriors bring back their entire core besides David Lee.
The Warriors should still be the title favorites going into next
season because along with bringing back the reigning MVP
in Curry, the Warriors still have Klay Thompson, Draymond
Green, Harrison Barnes, Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston
and Andrew Bogut. Cleveland should have no problems
getting out of the Eastern conference because the East is
atrocious. LeBron will make his amazing sixth NBA finals,
probably lose because Kevin Love plays zero defense and
then Laker fans will randomly bring up Kobe and shout five
rings! for some reason. You have to love the NBA.

ISAIAH THOMAS BOSTON CELTICS

The Boston Celtics became a different team when Isaiah Thomas
was traded from the Phoenix Suns in February. Although Drake may
disagree, Thomas had a statistically better season than last years six
man winner, Lou Williams. Although Thomas will come off the bench
for the Celtics behind Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley, he might
end up playing more minutes because of Bostons dependence on
Thomass offensive production. Brad Stevens up-tempo, fluid offense
should inflate Thomass offensive numbers as well. If Thomas ends
up winning Sixth Man of the Year, expect Drake to find another way to
rap about Torontos irrelevant basketball team.

ANTHONY DAVIS NEW ORLEANS PELICANS

Every NBA superstar has a breakout year when they introduce
their greatness to the basketball world. LeBron James breakout
year was in 2004 when he averaged 27 points and 7 assists per
game, as well as hoisted the win-deprived city of Cleveland on his
shoulders. Warrior point guard Steph Currys emergence came in
2013, when he averaged 24 points per game to go along with 8.5
assists. Davis breakout year came last season at the ripe age of 21.
He averaged 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game,
and asserted himself as the most transcendent talent since King
James himself entered the league. Last week, 86.2 percent of NBA
general managers voted Davis, who stands at 6 feet 10 inches,
as the ideal player to start an NBA franchise with. Davis recently
signed a contract for $145 million over five years, yet still refuses to
buy a razor to shave his infamous unibrow.

CAVALIERS/SPURS
With a Big 3 of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, the
Cavaliers have one of the best rosters the NBA has seen since the
2002 Lakers. Its hard to even name another Eastern Conference
team that will compete with the Cavs in the playoffs this year. The
Western Conference reminds me of the GOP race. Everyone seems
to think there are six or seven serious finals candidates, when in fact
only two have a legitimate shot (Spurs/Warriors and Bush/Rubio).
15 years of watching the NBA has trained me to never bet against
the Spurs in the playoffs. By the way, if Donald Trump were an NBA
team he would be the Los Angeles Clippers an overconfident,
flashy team owned for over 30 years by a serial racist.

NEVADA 30, HAWAII 20

Pack
Preview:
Bowl game
or bust

ood news Pack fans, the sky

didnt come crashing down
this week. Nevada beat
Hawaii, but the bad news is
that the Pack needed a major second-half
comeback after entering the locker room
down 17-0.
Oh, its going to hit the fan now, I
said to myself as I watched Nevadas
bowl hopes almost slip from their
fingers. Thankfully, for head coach Brian
Polians sake, his team came away with
a much-needed 30-20 win. Now with
the desperately needed bye week this
week, it is time to turn our attention to
Novembers schedule and wonder just
what the odds are that Nevada can reach
a bowl game and put a positive spin to
an overall disappointing season. With a
4-4 record, there arent two guaranteed
wins left on the schedule to qualify for
a bottom-tier bowl
game. Lets preview
the last four games of
the season and see the
likelihood of reaching
the Roast Beef Bowl
or whatever new bowls
they come up with this
year.

FRESNO STATE

A Thursday night
game at Fresno State
doesnt scream easy win to anyone who
has followed Nevada football. Fresno
leads the all-time series 27-18-1 while
winning 11 out of the last 17 meetings.
That being said, this is not a good
Bulldogs squad that former Nevada
defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter has
going for him. Fresno sits at 2-6 with wins
over Abilene Christian and UNLV and
rank below the top 100 in passing yards,
rushing yards, points for and points
against. Former quarterback Derek Carr
and running back Ryan Matthews arent
walking into Bulldog Stadium next Thursday, but this game is a test nonetheless.

SAN JOSE STATE

The Spartans are usually the perennial
doormat for, well, everyone. That has
somewhat changed in large part to the
nations second leading rusher in running
back Tyler Ervin and his ridiculous 1,159
rushing yards and 12 touchdowns this
season. Despite a front seven with some
talent, Nevadas defense has been gashed
by talented running backs this season.
Arizonas Nick Wilson (183 yards and
three touchdowns), Texas A&Ms Tra
Carson (137 yards) and Wyomings Brian
Hill (188 yards) have all exposed the
weaknesses in Nevadas run defense and I
expect Ervin to take it up a notch against
the Pack. Keep in mind that the only
guy in the entire country who has more
rushing yards than Ervin is the demigod
LSU running back Leonard Fournette.

UTAH STATE
The Aggies have shown they can beat
teams big, as they forced Boise State to
commit seven turnovers in the first half
of Utah States eventual 52-26 win. Utah
State also doesnt lose at home, with the
last home loss in Maverik Stadium on
Oct. 12, 2013. Sure, the Aggies dont have
anyone on offense that jumps out at you
from the stat sheet, but keep in mind that
they ranked 24th in total defense this
season.

SAN DIEGO STATE

Nevadas defense will get to travel
down to San Diego to face the Aztecs and
arguably the best player in the conference in running back Donnel Pumphrey.
Pumphrey is the only player in the FBS to
lead his team in rushing yards, receiving
yards and receptions. After a rough start,
SDSU is now riding a four-game winning
streak and looking to claim the West
Division title. This game will be a big one
for Nevadas season in either direction. If
Nevada can go 3-0 up to this point they
are still contenders for the West Division
title along with SDSU, but if it may also
be that deciding game for the Packs
sixth win, which would make them bowl
eligible.
Six wins are all that is needed to
become bowl eligible in the FBS, but with
four tough games left on the schedule
its not looking good. Lets face it Pack
fans, the odds of making a bowl game are
becoming more and more unlikely. Three
out of the next four contests are on the
road and the fourth is a mid-November
match up with one of the top running
backs in the country. A lot will have to
go right for Nevada to reach a lower-tier
bowl game.
In all seriousness though, there really
should be a Roast Beef Bowl.

CARDINAL SIN
Due to sex scandal, Louisville must fire
mens basketball coach Rick Pitino

n open letter to Louisville athletic

director Tom Jurich:
Dear Tom,
In mens college basketball, a coachs
job description goes beyond the Xs and the Os.
They are the face of the program and, in some
cases, the face of the university. The head coach of
your program, Rick Pitino, falls into those ranks,
which is why he has come under fire. Former escort
Katina Powells book Breaking
Cardinal Rules: Basketball and
the Escort Queen was published
earlier this month, and the
accusations are damning to
the basketball program, your
athletic department and the
entire university. Five former
Louisville players and recruits
have confirmed stories of
Neil Patrick
former graduate assistant coach
Healy
Andre McGee orchestrating 20
parties with alcohol, strippers
and money changing hands for
sexual favors. McGee has since
stepped down as the assistant
coach at the University of
MissouriKansas City and Pitino
should be next. With the severity
of these allegations it is time for
you to pull the trigger. Fire Rick
Pitino.
Jack
The details of this scandal
Rieger
are appalling. Powell, her three
daughters and over two dozen dancers performed
at these parties from 2010-2014, where they were
paid to strip naked, dance for the recruits and even
negotiate terms for side deals. You dont have to
be a rocket scientist to know that those side deals
were for sex.
The recruit would pick out what girl he wanted,
Powell said in an interview with ESPNs Outside the
Lines. Andre would come to me, tell me what girl
the recruit wanted, and I would tell the girl and she
would say her price.
Powell even said that she had sex with recruits
parents and guardians to secure a commitment.
This is not the typical NCAA violation with some

school giving a recruit a new car or paying his rent,

and everyone just happens to be looking the other
way. Besides the fact that prostitution is illegal
in the state of Kentucky, all of these crimes were
committed at Mindardi Hall, an on-campus dorm
named after Pitinos late brother-in-law who died
during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, while under
coaching supervision. One anonymous former
recruit said that the dorm parties were like a strip
club. McGee being gone is not enough to make
up for the atrocities of these allegations. The entire
coaching staff, most notably Pitino, must be held
responsible.
Pitino claims he knew nothing about the parties,
the strippers or the side deals, but this is highly
unlikely. How does a coach who is in charge of
almost every detail of the basketball programs
success not know this is going on?
This is my theory, Powell said. Four years. A
boatload of recruits. A boatload of dancers. Loud
music. Alcohol. Security. Cameras. Basketball
players who came in at will. You got players that are
so loyal to Pitino. Who wouldnt be like, Hey, you
know, we got dancers and sex and all that going
on? My thing is how could he not know?
Lets say he didnt know. Does that make the
situation any better? If Pitino was completely
unaware of the blatant and obvious NCAA and
legal violations going on under his nose, then he
does not have control of his program. If a graduate
assistant coach, who doesnt have much authority,
can orchestrate this entire affair with numerous
strippers, players, recruits and recruits families
while all of this takes place on campus, then that
alone is a firing offense. This sounds ridiculous
because it is ridiculous. Either Pitino is lying or he
had his head in the sand. Either way, he should not
have a job because of it.
The biggest star on a college basketball team is
typically the head coach, and Louisville is no exception. In fact, Pitino is the biggest star on Louisvilles
campus. This is one of the reasons why Pitino has
yet to be fired; the coaching-centric culture of
college basketball is harboring his job. Think about
this: USCs head football coach Steve Sarkisian
was fired two weeks ago for repeatedly showing up
drunk to games and team meetings and battling an

alcohol addiction. While not a good career move,

drinking alcohol is legal, yet the college football media and the USC athletic department didnt think
twice before firing Sarkisian. Pitino and Louisvilles
basketball program have organized and financed
an on-campus brothel for four seasons, which
of course is illegal and immoral, yet the athletic
department has defended Pitino and has said they
have no intention of firing him.
As for the college basketball medias attention
towards the scandal, ESPN.com, the NCAA.com,
Sports Illustrated, and Bleacher Report dont have
any news concerning Pitino on their home page as
of Oct. 26. Neither did the Courier-Journal, the largest newspaper in Louisville. Apparently on-campus
brothels and sex parties run by one of the largest
college basketball programs in the country isnt
newsworthy.
Let us also remind you, Tom, that this is not the
first time Pitino has brought bad publicity to the
program. Back in 2009, Pitino was involved in a
sexual extortion case when he admitted to having a
sexual affair with the wife of a Louisville equipment
manager. The encounter was, according to Pitino,
no more than 15 seconds, but the woman came
to him several weeks later saying she was pregnant
and asked Pitino to pay her $3,000 for an abortion.
Keep in mind that 2009 was right before these new
allegations of recruits sleeping with strippers would
take place.
Pitino has been given enough chances. His
coaching career is one of the best in college
basketball history, but his actions off the court
should trump his accomplishments on it. You, Tom,
have even given Pitino your vote of confidence, saying, Coach Pitino has no plans to step down and
he absolutely didnt know about the allegations.
This is not the right decision for your program and
for your university. It is your responsibility to put
the welfare of the program, the athletic department
and the university over the storied career of a coach
who has either abused his power or was unaware of
those abusing theirs. Tom Jurich, you must do what
is right. Fire Pitino.
