SPECIFICATIONS

1.0

LOCATION OF PROJECT

The project is located in Nairobi County. The rehabilitation works to be carried out at
Materials Testing and Research Department (MTRD), which is under the Ministry of
Transport and Infrastructure. MTRD is located at Machakos Road, Industrial Area.
2.0

EXTENT OF CONTRACT

The major works to be executed under the Contract comprise mainly of but are not limited to
the following:

Relocation of equipment and other assorted items from the laboratory


and offices.

Demolition works
New construction works. These include additional office, partition
works, working benches, equipment platforms, steel doors, gas cylinder housing
among others.
Electrical works
Drainage rehabilitation
Plumbing works
Finishes to the floor, doors and walls

RELOCATION AND UNISTALLATIONS

The Contractor is expected to relocate carefully the existing furniture, equipment and other
assorted items to a location directed by the Client. Existing equipment shall be uninstalled
and relocated to a location designated by the Client. The Contractor is expected to handle the
equipment with utmost care so as to avoid damage. Power supply to the equipment shall be
disconnected before any uninstallation is carried out.
Demolitions and new works shall not be allowed to commence until all items have been
relocated and equipment uninstallation done.
4.0

DEMOLITION WORKS

Demolition works have been indicated in the drawings. The works include demolition of
partition walls, removal of steel and wooden doors as well as wooden benches. The
contractor is expected to carry out the demolition in such a manner as to ensure that the
recovered material can be reused. Special attention should be given to the wooden doors with
glass panels to avoid damage.
No material from demolition shall be disposed without prior approval by the Client.

NEW CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Partitioning

The partition wall between the proposed laboratory and equipment store for procurement
section shall ensure complete separation upto the roof level. During construction maximum
care shall be exercised so prevent loss or damage of equipment. The contractor shall make
maximum use of material obtained from demolition works especially the masonry blocks.
6.1

Main Laboratory/Technicians Office

The main laboratory/technicians office shall be located as shown in the drawings. Walling fro
the office shall be composed of 1.0m half masonry wall at the bottom and panelled glass for
the top section. The configuration shall allow a sitted person have a view of the laboratory.
A wooden bench shall be built in the office as shown in the drawings.
6.2

Concrete Working Benches

All concrete benches shall be constructed using reinforced class 25/20 concrete. The
minimum reinforcement on the benched shall be Y8. The top finished surface of the bench
shall be 1.0m from the finished floor surface. The benches shall have a terrazzo finish to
match with existing.
Wooden lockable drawers and open shelves shall be constructed under all benches at
alternating intervals as shown in the drawings. The lockable drawers shall be constructed in
such a manners as to avoid liquid spillage from the bench top does not spill into the cabinets.
6.3

Equipment Platforms

Equipment platforms shall be constructed using Class 25/20 concrete reinforced using BRC
mesh A142 or equivalent. The height of the platform shalll be 100mm from the finished floor
level. The platform shall have a terazzo floor finish to match with the existing floor.
6.4

Steel Door, Windows and Gas Chamber Housing

All doors except the main door shall be lockable from the inside. Steel doors shall be used to
replace wooden doors as shown in the drawings. The design of the door shall be approved by
the Client.
The existing glass panels on the outside perimeter wall shall be removed and replaced with
louvers. All windows shall have a burglar proof steel grillage constructed using SHS.
Gas chamber housing shall be constructed using masonry walling with iron sheet roofing and
a steel door. The location and fabrication of the same shall be subject to approval by the
Client.
6.5

Finishes to Floors and Walls

Floor to all offices shall be 300x300mm white ceramic floor tiles. Floor in the repaired areas
in the main laboratory area shall be terrazo matching with the existing.
Walls to all offices shall be repainted using matt emulsion undercoat and two coats of silk
emulsion paint. The final colour of the walls shall be cream or as directed by the Client.

Outside Sample Shade

An room shall be constructed outside the bitumen laboratory. The room size shall be
6000x8000mm with a reinforced concrete sloping roof (15o) to the horizontal but with
200mm thick machine dressed stone walls bedded and jointed with (1:3) cement/ sand mortar
and floored with hardcore fill,, sand bedding and 600x600mm pcc paving slabs, pre painted
30 gauge sheets with 100mm PVC heavy duty down pipes to match existing structure. The
location to be as directed by the Client

ELECTRICAL WORKS

The existing power supply cables to dismantled equipment shall be removed.


The equipment s in the main laboratory shall be supplied with 3-Phase and 2-Phase electrical
power from the main consumer unit. Each equipment shall supplied with 3-Phase power shall
be powered independently and shall controlled by its own isolator switch. All power sockets
shall be industrial/heavy duty gauge.
The location and type of the power sockets as well as proposed routing is as show in the
drawings.
There shall be additional lighting to the main laboratory. The lights shall consist of 1000mm
florescent tubes at designated points as approved by the Client.
8.0

PLUMBING AND DRAINAGE WORKS

There are two steel water tanks available at the Clients premises. A steel frame support
structure shall be constructed on concrete foundation. The design of the reinforced concrete
foundation and steel support structure shall be subject to approval by the Client.
The water shall be supplied to stainless steel high quality sinks as located in the drawings.
The existing sinks shall also be made functional.
Drainage rehabilitation shall involve repairs on existing gutters, establishment of covered
water collection channels in the main laboratory, desilting assorted drainage structures and
leakage sealing. The water collection channels in the main laboratory shall have adequate
slope for free flow.
9.0

GAS SUPPLY SYSTEM

Gas shall be supplied from the gas chamber location to designated points within the
laboratory as directed by the Client.
10.0

WORKMANSHIP

The site shall be kept clean and organised. The demolished material shall be collected at the
end of each working day and stockpiled at a designated location. The Clients approval shall
be sought when:
