Professional Progress Report

Saeed Hassan (Graduate Civil Engineer)

1. Introductory Note:
Climbing to the top demands strength, whether it is to the top of Mount Everest or to
the top of your career

Career as it can be described as an occupation undertaken for a significant period of

a person's life and with opportunities for progress. Career can also pertain to an
occupation or a profession that usually involves special training or formal education,
and is considered to be a persons lifework.
Deciding to move your career forward or to choose a new career, usually that is the
hardest part, making the decision to do just that to take action. Then comes the
second part, deciding on how youre going to set goals and maximize your career
potential also termed as career development plan.
Career Development Plan is the main key
growth by suggesting time frames for certain
higher knowledge through further training &
and identifying areas that need to develop
career milestone.

to set realistic expectations of career

milestones to happen (like acquisition of
courses resulting in promotion of skills)
before becoming eligible for their next

These are some terms and facts that really impact ones job life or work life from
traditional way to a competitive way of progress where every time you have to face
challenges that enhance your abilities and help to achieve goals for better career
growth.
I don want to skip the same methodology directed by Project Director Mr. Mubashir
Niaz and Project Manager Mr. Anjum Javed that you have not to bound yourself to the
work assigned to you but you must prepare yourself for upcoming challenges by
setting your short term and long term objectives/goals that actually are related to,

Education and training

Job assignments

Developmental activities

So, for better career development these things should go hand in hand with each
other.
This report is also a reflection of their motivation and guidance.
I am very grateful to all my colleagues and seniors for providing such an excellent
environment for better career growth/development and also hope the same in the
future.

Professional Progress Report

Saeed Hassan (Graduate Civil Engineer)

As an overview Consultant appointed by ADSSC our main work at site from kick off
meeting and end till the handing over of the project, all of this is a sequence of
learning new things practically and technically.
I was trained in reference with the ADSSC Specifications at site by RE Mr.Shuja A
Zaidi and ARE Mr.Iftikhar Ali. As I had never worked for Pumping Station and pressure
line in past, so they helped me on each and every stage of project to handle the
situation and proceeding of work in smooth way in the lights of specification and
standards.
After 4 months I was mobilized to project of Al-Watani Residential Development
pahse-1A and phase-2 in Abu Dhabi Main Island which consists of gravity network
only.
To summarize my experience in seven (7) months with MML is very good as I have
learned many things that cant be counted but in big scope I experienced that how to
learn and implement technical experience in every field. I gained a good
communication approach between different parties and mostly between the site office
and home office. I have learned different ways for establishing a better connection with
concerned parties by maintaining documentation require during the stage of
construction of a project which is very helpful for me and will surely help in future.
The use of GIS As. Built Drawing and Microsoft Database System in maintaining
record of all the data related to sewer network is one of the latest technologies that I
learned and furthermore PIMS Project Information Management System is a system
first implemented by Mott MacDonald in the region of United Kingdom and is now
extended to MESA. The most advantage of this system is one can have access to all
information about his data throughout the World.
These are some fractions of that I have learned in Mott MacDonald up till now but
journey has not ended, it is now to begin. There are still more to go that actually
depends upon the self esteem and honesty with profession.

Projects:

3.1. Background:
As I was recruited for the Water and Environmental Division in MML and mainly
wastewater works of Abudhabi area where the client is Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services
Company (ADSSC) and under the contract of O-1054 where the responsibilities of
Mott MacDonald is limited to over-seeing the sewerage works for the development.
Contract O-1054 contains almost 20 different projects and I am working on two
projects as a Site Staff amongst them.
Before taking responsibilities of site work and starting work in company everyone has
to go through and passed some courses that are necessary to do work consciously
and safely as Mott MacDonald motto is COMMITTED TO SAFETY. I have completed
all of courses and the major are.

Mott MacDonald has divided the waste water works scope for contract O-1054 in to
four (4) stages.
Stage 1: Review of Conceptual Design
Stage 2: Detailed Design and Tendering Document
Stage 3: Tender Evaluation
Stage 4: Construction Supervision & Handing over the developments
The main concern for me in these stages is construction stage because I am working
as a site staff. The first three stages are mainly handled by home office support
personnel but I often involve in this stage as I am working in developing hydraulic
statement on spread sheet and applying x-checks with Developer consultants
statement that mostly include population, sewage load, design flow, gradient, diameter
of pipe used and ratio of Qp/Qf and Vf final velocity by keeping in view the ADSSC
Design Guidelines. I developed following hydraulic statement with support of home
office personnel.
