Political Agenda: The K+12

We need to add two years to our basic education. Those who can afford to
pay up to fourteen years of schooling before university. Thus their children
are getting into the best universities and the best jobs after graduation. I
want at least 12 years for our public school children to give them an even
chance at succeeding.
-

President Benigno S.Aquiano III

K+12 means Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and secondary education.

Kindergarten - refers to the 5-year old child or student that takes a standardized kinder
curriculum.
Elementary education - refers to primary schooling that involves six or seven years of
education.
Secondary education - refers to high school.

And our research is about the one of the PNoys program or political agenda
that is called the K+12 Basic Education Program. And after our group
research and studies, we applied what we learned and answered some
questions that is found in the next page.

1. What is/are the objectives of the Political Agenda?

The goal of the Enhanced K+12 Basic Education Program is to create a
functional

basic

education

system

that

will

produce

productive

and

responsible citizens equipped with the essential competencies and skills for
both life-long learning and employment. Enhance the basic education system
to full functionality to fulfill the basic learning needs of students. To give them
an opportunity to receive quality education based on an enhanced curriculum
that is internationally recognized and comparable.

2. What steps are to be taken or were taken to achieve the

goals of the agenda?
a. They will try to develop a curriculum that is rational and focused on
excellence. (decongested, uses research-based practices, uses quality
materials and textbooks, etc.)
b. Produce a pool of highly qualified and adequately trained teachers.
c. Achieve high academic standards, especially in Mathematics, Science,
and English at all levels.
d. Produce graduates who are globally competitive and whose credentials
are recognized internationally.
e. Produce graduates who possess skills and competencies that will allow
them to be productive members of society or pursue higher education.

3. What setbacks were encountered in the

implementation/application of the agenda?
Many people dont agree on this program because most of the parents and
students in our country are contented in the 10 years of basic education.
Others said it will add burden to poor families for the expenses will be too
high for them and it will be hard for educating their children.

4. What relevance with the political agenda achieves at the

end of the implementation?
Graduates will be prepared for higher education, will be able to earn higher
wages and/or better prepared to start their own business, and mostly they
could now be recognized as professionals in other countries or those who
intend to study abroad will meet the entrance requirements of
foreign schools.
The political agenda is aiming to expand basic education in the country from
10years cycle to globally comparable 12 years and that all Muslim Filipino
children will have full basic education. The agenda or this program also aims
in making every child in the Philippines a good reader by the time they have
reach grade 1 and having all the good quality books and classrooms, required
to have a quality education for our children.

5. How far has the political agenda achieved its goal in the
1st 100 days of the PNoy Administration?
For the first 100 days PNoy or President Benigno Aquino III have raised fund
for the construction of classroom and for the hiring of new teachers. And now
for the year of 2011 the budget for education is up from 175 billion pesos to
207.3 billion pesos to spend for the construction of 13,147 classroom and
hiring of 10,000 teachers.

6. Is there a timetable for the Program? If so, what is the

stretch of this timeline?

7. What is the relevance of this political agenda to the: A.

Economics B. Social goal of the PNoy Administration
For the society and the economy, the economy will experience accelerated
growth in the long run because according to studies, improvements in the
quality education will increase GDP(Gross Domestic Product) growth by as
much 2%. And studies in UK, India and US show that additional years of
schooling also have positive overall impact on society. And the Philippine
education system will achieve or attain the international standards. And
furthermore is that if this agenda was approved or implemented, it can
produce more scientist, engineers, technicians, technologies and teachers
that will make this country more globally competitive in industry and
manufacturing.

8. As a student of political science, what is/are your vision

for the program?
A vision achieved through an enhanced curriculum; Meaning that every
graduate of the enhanced K+12 Basic Education Program will benefit from an
updated curriculum that is focused on enabling every child/student to achieve
mastery of competencies and skills. And as like said in answers on previous
questions, a student can earn higher wages, can attain the entrance
requirements

for

studying

abroad

and

Philippines

will

achieve

the

international standards.
And as a student we think that the education agenda of President Aquino is a
good program and it can be a great help to our country if he accomplishes all
the goals that he have set.

Not only the quality of education that will

improve but also our future generation. We all know that many of our public
schools are facing problems in the case of good facilities and excellent
teachers. So its a good idea that President Aquino has decided the rebuilding
and construction of new classrooms for children and the hiring of more
professional teachers for us to have a real quality education and to mold our
future generation into a better one.
