THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
Again we have a feast of scripture! Nehemiah. When the
Jewish people returned from exile in Babylon, Ezra, the priest,
wanted to re-inform the people and re-establish the Jewish religion. He begins to read from
the book of the Law of Moses and explains its meaning to the people.
St Paul reminds us that just as the human body is one though made up of many parts,
so we who make up the Church of Jesus Christ, one composed of different members with
different gifts, yet form a unity in Christ.
St Luke writes for Theophilus and for us, recalling Jesus return to his home town of
Nazareth. God fulfils his promise in Jesus, the long-awaited saviour of all people. But sadly,
he is not accepted in his home town.
Note that Jesus went down to the Jordan. Was baptised by John and so began his
ministry. He did not remain in the desert; but began proclaiming the Word of God and
giving signs in the towns and villages he visited. His reputation went before him so when he
visited Nazareth and began to tell his own people that he was the Anointed One the
Messiah they said Is he not one of our own we know him where did he get all this
wisdom? And they could not accept him. They only saw the man Jesus, the carpenter,
whom they had known they could not accept the change in Jesus as he carried out his
mission for God the Father. Their minds were closed!
Justice & Peace Commission Open Meeting Wednesday 27 January: Each year we
have had an Open Meeting to share ideas on Justice and Peace throughout the diocese. This
meeting is special. Why? In the Westminster diocese there is a review of all the agencies,
commissions and groups with a view to clarifying their objectives and to make the most
efficient use of the resources entrusted to them. This is the nearest thing to an Ofsted
Inspection!! I am very happy to give a full account of our Justice and Peace work and your
help as parishioner will be very much appreciated. Dany Cronin is leading the review
process. I would wish to give a clear indication of our work in the Commission and your
constant and involvement as parishioners. We will begin with delicious soup at 6pm. If you
can attend please sign in on the clipboard at the back of the church. Many thanks.
Bishops Ordinations: On Monday 25th at 12 noon, two auxiliary bishops will be
ordained for our diocese of Westminster, Canon Paul McAleenan (Watford) and Mgr. John
Wilson (Leeds).
Hopefully a number of people from our parish will be able to attend. Canon Paul has a
very sound background. He trained at St Patricks College in Tipperary!! We wish them
every blessing in their ministry.
Have a wonderful week.
Fr Joe
