Problem 1
An 8 inch slab resting on four beams is shown in the figure below. The slab is made
out of light-weight concrete with a density, , of 0.65 lb/in3 and the beams and
columns are made out of a material with a modulus of 10,000,000 psi.

Problem 1a (5 points). Should the slab be considered as a one-way slab or a two-way

slab? Justify your answer.

Problem 1 (cont.)
The 8 in slab is made out of concrete with a density, , of 0.65 lb/in3 and the beams
and columns are made out of a material with a modulus of 10,000,000 psi.

Problem 1b (20 points). Assume that we are analyzing the structure as a one-way
slab as shown above. Draw a Free Body Diagram of Beam A due to the load from
the weight of the slab. Label all loads and reactions with appropriate magnitudes
and units. You may ignore the self-weight of the beam in your calculations.

Problem 1 (cont.)
The 8 in slab is made out of concrete with a density, , of 0.65 lb/in3 and the beams
and columns are made out of a material with a modulus of 10,000,000 psi.
Problem 1c (20 points). Using the Free Body Diagram from Problem 1b, what is the
maximum bending (flexural) stress in the beam?

The 8 in slab is made out of concrete with a density, , of 0.65 lb/in3 and the beams
and columns are made out of a material with a modulus of 10,000,000 psi.
Problem 1d (15 points). Given that the column is 12 ft long, what is the critical
buckling load, Pcr ? Assume the beam is simply-supported on the columns and that
the columns are fixed to the ground.

Problem 2
A self-supported cable-stayed bridge is shown below. The weight of the deck is 200
kips and the two cables have a yield stress, y , equal to 80 ksi.

Problem 2a (5 points). This problem will use an Allowable Strength Design (ASD)
approach. Briefly, in one or two sentences, explain the differences between ASD and
Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD).

Problem 2b (20 points). What is the force in one of the two cables? Given that the
cables are in tension, is the tower in tension or compression? List all assumptions.
