Evesham police
look to grow
department

Camden edges Cherokee, 62-55

Chief gives presentation exploring growth

in number of police activities over past five
years versus number of officers employed
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
At the start of each year, Eveshams township manager challenges the leaders of the police
department to create goals for the
organization on how the department can better itself and provide better service to the community for the year.
As Evesham continues to grow
in terms of population and the
construction of new residences
and businesses, Police Chief
Christopher Chew believes this
year the department should grow
as well.
People are coming in to our
community because its the safest
community, Chew said.
To back up his call for growth,
Chew used the most recent meeting of the Evesham Township
Council to give a presentation ex-

ploring the growth in the number

of police activities over the past
five years versus the number of
officers employed by the department. Chew defines police activities as everything the department
does within a year, from answering calls, to car stops, to even the
departments community outreach programs.
According to Chew, in 2010 the
department handled 63,328 activities, but by 2015 the number had
grown to 94,293. Chew said that
growth equated to a 48 percent increase in demand for police personnel, but even the noted increase was a low number because it did not factor in what the
department does internally or
when a call might need to involve
multiple people.
I want to say that number is

On Jan. 20, the Cherokee High School Chiefs took on the Camden High School Panthers in boys
varsity basketball at Cherokee. It was a hard-fought game, and the two teams played neck-andneck until the fourth quarter when Camden ultimately pulled ahead and topped Cherokee, 62-55.

Medford man pleads guilty to theft and burglary
Burlington County Prosecutor
Robert D. Bernardi announced
that a Medford Township man
pleaded guilty in superior court
to 24 counts of theft and burglary
that were committed in six towns
over a 10-month period that ended
in August 2012.
The man admitted before the
Hon. Charles A. Delehey, J.S.C. to
committing three counts of theft
(second-degree) and 21 counts of
burglary (third-degree).
The plea follows a three-week
trial last month that concluded
with him being found guilty of
one count of theft (second-degree)
and three counts of burglary
(third-degree). Those charges
were unrelated to the ones to
which he pleaded guilty on Jan.
12.
Delehey will sentence him on

March 3 on the charges resulting

from the trial as well as the 24 offenses to which he has pleaded
guilty.
Under the plea agreement, the
sentence for the thefts and burglaries he admitted to in court on
Jan. 12 will be decided by Delehey
in what is known as an open plea.
The thefts netted more than $2
million in stolen goods from residences in Evesham, Medford
Township,
Moorestown
and
Mount Laurel in Burlington
County and Haddonfield and
Voorhees in Camden County.
Most of the homes were in upscale neighborhoods, near a golf

Evesham Saving Lives extended through June

More than 1,000 residents have been taken home through the program since September
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
More than 1,000 Evesham residents have
now received free rides home through the
Evesham Saving Lives designated driver
program since the initiative began in September.
With that number in mind, Evesham recently announced it would extend the program, with this next iteration set to last
through June 1. The program will continue
to operate as it has for the past several
months, meaning Evesham residents can
use their smartphones to request free rides
to their homes from private taxi services
UBER and BeMyDD at any of Eveshams 19
alcohol serving establishments between
the hours of 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Weve got some numbers that were
very proud of, and to me the most telling
number is that weve brought home over
1,000 of our residents since Sept. 1, Mayor

Randy Brown said.

With those 1,000 residents ferried home,
Evesham police statistics show there has
been an 83 percent reduction in DWI arrests of Evesham residents coming from
the 19 bars and restaurants participating
in the program.
Before the program began, Evesham police were averaging arresting six Evesham
residents per month from the 19 locations
a number which has now dropped to one
per month.
Although he couldnt name a specific
cause, Brown noted the number of overall
DWI arrests in town is also down 55 percent
since the program began. Before the program, those numbers reached heights such
as 20 in June, 21 in July and 19 in August, to
numbers after the program began such as
eight in September, eight in October, 11 in
November and six in December.
Think of it December, the big month,
the end of the year parties, and New Years

Eve. We had six arrests overall, Brown

said.
The program will also continue its recent partnership with neighboring
Voorhees Township through which
Voorhees residents can get rides to their
homes in Voorhees from Evesham and
Voorhees establishments, and Evesham
residents can get rides to their homes from
Voorhees and Evesham establishments.
Also continuing is the funding process
for the Saving Lives program, through
which no taxpayer dollars are used to fund
the endeavor, with all funds coming from
the donations of private individuals and
organizations.
Were going to extend the program to
June 1 because of the tireless work of Evesham Celebrations Foundation and the
amazing amount of people who have donated to the program, and we thank them for

A break in the case came after
DNA from the convicted man was
found on a flashlight left behind
during one of the Moorestown
burglaries. From there, the investigation shifted to the analysis of
more than 9,000 phone calls and
text messages, as well as surveillance.
Many of the items were
pawned. Even so, more than 500
stolen items were recovered.
Some of them were buried in the
convicted mans yard and others
were hidden in an abandoned
building in Philadelphia.
The man was arrested on Sept.
5, 2012, along with another Medford man. The second convicted
man pled guilty on May 20, 2015,
to two counts of burglary in exchange for five years of probation
and 364 days in the Burlington
County Jail.

At the targeted homes, phone
and alarm wires were cut, and
entry was often made by smashing a rear sliding door. The defendants would use a police radio to
monitor emergency communications. The burglaries were committed while the residents were

Items stolen included jewelry,
watches, furs, coins, crystal, silverware, handbags, firearms,
camera equipment and other

burglaries were discovered, a

probably 20 percent higher,
Chew said.
While the number of police activities has grown over the past
five years, the number of police
officers has not.
Chew said in 2010 the department was at an all-time high of 76
officers, which then fell to 70 officers in 2011, then rose to 72 officers in 2012, fell again to 68 officers for 2013 and 2014, before finally rising again to 73 officers in
2015. However, Chew did say due
to the work of Eveshams elected
officials, the decrease in officers
during the economic downturn
did not stem from the department
laying-off any officers.
A lot of police departments in
the area did, Chew said.
Through their (councils) forward thinking and through attri-

tion, we slowly reduced our rank

structure.
As for why Eveshams 73 officers had to deal with 94,293 activities in 2015, as opposed to the 76
officers who dealt with 63,328 activities in 2010, Chew said there
were several factors for the increase. Chew said the number of
mental health calls had increased
during that span, which usually
involves two to four officers needing to transport someone to a
medical facility.
Chew also said the increase of
cameras in police cars and cameras worn on officers bodies had
increased time spent making
copies of videos and copies of reports to be sent to attorneys and
citizens.
He also noted there has been an
increase in firearms applications,
as well as new time-consuming
initiatives by the department
such as community outreach programs, the police explorer program and most recently the pres-

high schools in New Jersey and
top 1,000 nationally. The district
ranked 33 in New Jersey and 255
nationally.

However, arguably the most remarkable ranking received a

round of applause at last weeks
LRHSD BOE meeting. Under the
2016 district with the best administration in the nation category,
LRHSD was ranked in the top 10.
We were No. 9, the only New
Jersey school district to make the
top 10 in the nation, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said.
In honor of board recognition
month, Birnbohm thanked the
board for the hard work it puts in
that allows it to receive national
recognition like this.
Youre a great board of education, and you let our administrators make great decisions for our
schools, Birnbohm said.
Birnbohm rounded out her superintendents report with some
highlights the district has already
created in 2016.
School visits and tours took
place to learn about and observe
the districts new schedule.
Cherokee
hosted
Haddon
Heights School District and
Lenape hosted Eastern Regional
High School District, and both
were extremely impressed with
the new process and the smooth
transition into the new schedule,

Birnbohm said.
Two of the newest features of
this schedule that have led to its
success have been common planning time and community lunch
and learn.
Its really great to see the level
of professionalism and collaboration that continues to take place
during our new common planning time with our faculty, Birnbohm said.
AP European history teachers
Jessica Le Grange from Cherokee
and Katelynn Woll from Shawnee
spent their planning time sessions brainstorming a new collaborative activity that would include the AP students from their
respective schools.
Students presented themselves
as ancient philosophers or scientists and discussed their feelings
about many topics, ranging from
the role of religion to the role of
science on things they learned
about in their course from their
persons perspective.
We thought about common
planning time within a building,
within a department, and now we
are seeing teachers taking advanplease see DISTRICT, page 14

tage of that and collaborating between two different buildings,
Birnbohm said.
The students have also taken
advantage of their new period, as
various clubs utilized their lunch
and learn time to gather and organize items for holiday gift baskets for local needy families.
School counselors met with
students who had at least one F at

the conclusion of the first marking period and encouraged them

to take advantage of after-school
extra help sessions and extra help
sessions that take place during
lunch and learn.
Shawnee photo students used
their free time during lunch and

big annual winter photo show
that takes place at Vaughan Hall
in Medford Lakes. More than 100
pieces of work were displayed at
this years show.
Seneca also turned some heads

piece was featured on the

brochure and all print media advertisements for the Deborah
Heart and Lung Foundation Program. This is the third time in the
last four years a Seneca student
has been featured by this organization for artwork.
In addition to these accomplishments, students from all four
district schools attended the annual Delaware Valley Consortium For Excellence and Equity
Student Program.
The high school student leadership institute was held at University of Pennsylvania, and it
helped support the development
of leadership and academic excellence for the districts diverse students.
Its great to hear all of these
exciting things going on in the
schools, board President Linda
Eckenhoff said. The accolades
that weve received are something
to be proud of.

that, Brown said. A lot of them
have been anonymous, and were
financially able to continue the
program.
The ECF, normally responsible
for township events such as the
Fourth of July parade and Taste
of Evesham, has been responsible
for the day-to-day administration
of the program.
Evesham Celebrations Foundation President and Deputy Mayor
Ken DAndrea said extending the
program will allow the ECF to
further develop many of the behind-the-scenes processes as this

program continues to take hold.

Our goal by extending it to
June 1 is to really develop the
process and the mechanisms to
sustain this program from 9 p.m.
to 2 a.m., 365 days a year, DAndrea said.
The ECF will also soon be holding its first ever fundraising
event on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 7 to
11 p.m. at the Indian Spring Country Club, with proceeds from the
event to benefit the Evesham Saving Lives program.
The event is casual dress, with
tickets at $50 per person, which
covers hors doeuvres, beer, wine
and dessert. Tribute band The
80s Revenge will also play the
event. Tickets are available at evesham-celebrationfoundation.ticketleap.com.
