1. Title of Research Project

Li-Fi Optical Wireless Communication System

2.Abstract
Li-Fi is high-speed, bidirectional, networked and mobile wireless communications using
light (as opposed to traditional radio frequencies). Li-Fi can be thought of as a light-based Wi-Fi.
That is, it uses light instead of radio waves to transmit information. And instead of Wi-Fi modems,
Li-Fi would use transceiver-fitted LED lamps that can light a room as well as transmit and receive
information.
Li-Fi is the solution for low speed of wireless communication and congested radio frequency
spectrum. It uses visible light spectrum which is 10,000 time greater than radio frequency.
In this project we are practically show how data is transfer through visible light by sending an
audio signal from multimedia device to a speaker through optical transmitter and optical receiver.

3. Background and Significance

Whether you are using wireless internet in a coffee shop, using Wi-Fi in your home, or
competing for bandwidth at a conference, youve probably gotten frustrated at the slow speeds
you face when more than one device is got into the network. One German physicist, DR. Harald
Haas, has come up with a solution he calls Data Through Illumination taking the optics out of
fiber optics by sending data through an LED light bulb that varies in intensity faster than the
human eye can follow. Its the same idea behind infrared remote controls, but far more powerful.
Haas says his invention can produce data rates faster than 100 megabits per second, which is
speedier than your average broadband connection. He envisions a future where data for laptops,
Smartphones, and tablets is transmitted through the light in a room. And security would be a
snapif you cant see the light, you cant access the data.

4. Problem Statement
Radio spectrum is congested but the demand for wireless data doubles each year.
Everything, it seems, wants to use wireless data but the capacity is drying up. Wireless radio
frequencies are getting higher, complexities are growing and RF interference continues to grow.
So what can carry this excess demand in the future?
The solution is Li-Fi. Direct modulation of LED devices is a low cost, secure, and safe way to
transmit data, and there is an abundance of free visible light spectrum. High intensity LEDs used
in light bulbs, flash lights and cameras can transmit very high data rates, faster than Wi-Fi!

5. Objective

Provide an efficient, low cost, secure, digitally controlled and fast data transfer technique
Used as an alternative for conventional data transfer technique (Wi-Fi).
Let us to use more efficient light source i.e. LED.
Aims at a communication tool in public places which comes up with transfer of data at a
faster rate over a wide spectrum.

6. Literature Survey
The technology truly began during the 1990's in countries like Germany, Korea, and
Japan where they discovered LED's could be switched on & off to send information. At TED,
Haraald Haas demonstrated a data rate of transmission of around 10Mbps comparable to a
fairly good UK broadband connection. Two months later he achieved 123Mbps. On 12th July 2011,
he used a table lamp with an LED bulb to transmit a video of blooming flowers that was then
projected onto a screen behind him. During the event he periodically blocked the light from lamp
to prove that the lamp was indeed the source of incoming data.

7. Methodology
Our project consists of two parts. One is optical LIFI transmitter and the other is the
optical LIFI receiver. In our project circuit will take an audio signal through audio jack and gives it
to the audio amplifier. Then the audio signal will pass through the mixer. The mixer will modulate
it with the voltage. Then it will be given to the light emitting diode and the light emitting diode
(LED) will transmit it in the form of light. Then this light will travel it in air medium and on the
other end of the air medium the photo transistor will receive that form of light.
The receiver circuit will take this received light from the LIFI optical receiver and will be
demodulated form the voltage and the audio signal will be separated from the voltage. Then the
audio amplifier will amplify it on the speakers. This signal is the actual signal which we have sent
from the audio jack.
