TRANSITIONAL HOME
RESEARCH

1
Team 3
Elizabeth Thompson
ID352
W1A3
Transitional Housing
In research for this assignment, members of team 3 were fortunate to find willing participants
from organizations in their respective locations to share some information by telephone about their
organization. Ernesto Rodriguez of Haven for Hope, Adelaide Hsu of Continuum of Care and Family
Self Sufficiency, Angela Reyes of The Shade Tree, and Armella Holmes of Naomis Place were all very
accommodating and excited to share about their organizations programs.

In each instance, it appears that the organization has to have varying degrees of housing provided
to meet the degree of needs of the users. For example, The Shade Tree Las Vegas, provides emergency
shelter for Women, Children, and their pets, to move them to a new living situation. For more severe
cases, 1 year of transitional housing can be provided in a dorm setting. Similarly, the Continuum of Care
provides a Transitional Housing setting, with goal to move them into more permanent subsidized housing.

Each program pushes strongly on rehabilitating members. Their backgrounds and problems are
varying. Some experience medical and disabilities, others homelessness due to mental illness or lack of
personal self sufficiency skills. Many are victims of domestic violence and substance abuse. As you will
see from program descriptions in the Appendices, these organizations require attendance to address
peoples needs and put them on the path to self sufficiency and success. Programs are in place to address
their particular issues, but advance individuals also. They provide classes in finance, resume writing,
interviews, English as second language, child care, cooking and cleaning. Homework and study clubs are
provided for all members and children.

2
Typical accommodations vary. In the transitional housing spaces it appears to meet the needs of
many, the most common setup is a dormitory style. Visitors may be in a bunking situation if single, and
if they have children they may be provided a room, or a partitioned area in an open floor plan. Public
Restrooms and showers are commonplace as in a dormitory situation, and some additional family
restrooms and showers provided for people with small children. Dining is in common dining room.

Public Lounging areas are a minimum throughout; however there are areas set away for child
activities and play, meeting with coordinators, visiting medical clinics, public classes, and private
research for jobs and housing. Structure is a part of the program to success, children participate in group
activities and have access to homework clubs and teen activities. Adults who are learning to become self
sufficient and take care of their family on their own participate in chores which include helping in the
kitchen, cleaning public areas, and participating in child care.

Special attention has been given in most places to varying abilities, the facilities need to be able
to home mentally and physically disabled, provide them access to basic needs. Small children and less
abled people will need to access the facilities barrier free. The road map to success includes removing
barriers that people may have. They are able to work with a counselor on a road map to clear substance
abuse, escape domestic violence, medical attention to physical and mental disabilities, job search
education, assistance with transportation and clothing, and financial and household planning. While
providing safety, food and shelter is paramount, the programs successes are due to the integration of all of
these other services, a holistic approach as noted by Naomis Place, which lead to the eventual success
of the people with the most need.

The name of the house and location:

Haven for Hope
1 Haven for Hope Way
San Antonio, Texas 78207

Types of programs the organization offers:

The Transformational Campus (TC) is a place where an individual or family experiencing
homelessness can go to receive housing, education, counseling, and support in order to help
transform his or her life by addressing the root causes of homelessness. The goal is to help
individuals gain and keep permanent housing (Haven for Hope).
Our In-House Recovery Program (IHRP) is dedicated to helping free individuals from substance
abuse. To apply for this program, you must meet the same requirements of the Transformational
Campus. To get started, you can either visit Intake for a referral or go directly to the Restoration
Center located nearby at 601 N. Frio Street (Haven for Hope).

The goals and ambitions of the organization:

Our mission is to offer a place of home and new beginnings. We do this by providing,
coordinating, and delivering an efficient system of care for people experiencing homelessness in
Bexar County.
Haven for Hope is a place of hope and new beginnings for people in Bexar County experiencing
homelessness. It is made up of two major programs: the Courtyard and the Transformational
Campus. Both are on the Haven for Hope property and require a visit to the Intake Department to
get started. The Courtyard is a low-barrier safe sleeping program that offers shelter and basic
needs. The Transformational Campus is a center that offers services and shelter with an emphasis
toward addressing the root causes of homelessness.
Core Values: Radical Compassion - We have heart
[We show respect, kindness and patience in how we speak, see and serve]

4
Servant Leadership - We before me
[We model our mission by putting others first]
Driven by Hope - We are people of possibility!
[We act as pioneers and embrace innovation]
Pursuit of Excellence - We don't settle
[We seek the very best in our work and relationships]

Typical gathering spaces and what they are used for:

The ground is structured like a college. Every building is for something specific and there are no
necessarily social gathering spaces. All buildings have a necessity and an end goal.

Typical needs for women/children staying at the house:

Mr. Rodriguez notes that each client has certain needs. Haven for Hope mainly focuses on
homeless men, women, and children. To stay in accommodations they must maintain contact with
a case manager which helps them with their specific needs. There are over 93 organizations that
help assist these individuals; with 35 organizations directly on-campus.

Typical accommodations provided in private units:

Ernesto notes that families to include women and children are housed separate from single men.
Typical accommodations are a dorm room atmosphere with communal showers and restrooms.

Any additional information that would be helpful in the design for this project:
For two-parent families, verification of marriage or a common law certificate must be presented
to live together in a family dorm. In order to reside in the same room as husband and wife, you
must have children. Men and women otherwise reside in separate dormitories while you work
together to obtain housing (Haven for Hope).
The Courtyard is a safe outdoor sleeping space. Guests at PCY receive meals, communal
showers, laundry, basic medical care and mental health care, and other basic services. PCY
curfew is 10pm, but special arrangements can be made if your work schedule or other factors
force you to come in late. To stay at PCY, you must be able to care for yourself independently.

Services include:
1.
PATH: Center for Healthcare Services program to engage people interested in getting
mental health treatment.
2.
Peer Advocates: People who stay at PCY and help guide and orient new guests.
3.
Storage: One medium-sized storage bin next to your sleeping area and one large locked
storage bin for regular guests.
4.
Legal Services: Assist with ID recovery and other legal matters
5.
Emergency Service Case Management: Guidance to rapid rehousing and community
resources
6.
Sobering and Detox: Walking-distance access to a monitored place to sleep when
intoxicated and drug and alcohol detoxification.

Part II
SFCWC (San Francisco Women & Children) is conducting a housing program that will empower Women
and Children needing housing assistance.

Inspired by the growth and blooming of nature, this Queen Anne structure will be brought back to
life as SFCWC hopes to do for those she serves. Rich earth tones highlighted with blush pink and bright
green will create a warm and refreshing environment for those under duress. The ceiling will be coffered,
surrounded by moldings and wall patterns with textures and solid painted areas. The solid, parquet floors
will remain, brought back to life as the foundation in this home, and oriental floor coverings to reduce
wear, create warmth, weight, and contrast, and acoustical absorption in a busy home. Kitchenette areas
and public restrooms will have geometric pattern tiles, inspired by mosaic tile work, for floors,
backsplash, and partition breaks in the kitchenette and public restrooms. The double hung picture
windows will remain and provide natural light to the space. Stained glass panels representing women and
children will accentuate the light weight molded doors.
Common areas will be given an ample amount of space where it will have enough useable space
for a variety of group activities yet intimate enough to keep individuals closer and secure. The custom
media wall will be the highlight of the housing center where both women and children can relax and
enjoy recreational activities. Attention to specialized furniture and building hardware will be given to
small children and people of various abilities who may take residence. Children and adults alike should
have access to areas for study, personal administrative tasks and rehabilitation, where they have adequate
storage, supplies, task lighting, and technology access. Private spaces will be provided for breastfeeding
mothers and infants that need privacy and a silent atmosphere during nap time. Accommodation areas
should be public and accessible by all, this should include kitchen, restroom, laundry, study area, storage,
and transportation.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
Inspired by the growth and blooming of nature, this Queen Anne structure will be brought back to life as
SFCWC hopes to do for those she serves. Rich earth tones highlighted with blush pink and bright green will create
a warm and refreshing environment for those under duress. The ceiling will be coffered, surrounded by moldings
and wall patterns with textures and solid painted areas. The solid, parquet floors will remain, brought back to life
as the foundation in this home, and oriental floor coverings to reduce wear, create warmth, weight, and contrast,
and acoustical absorption in a busy home. Kitchenette areas and public restrooms will have geometric pattern tiles,
inspired by mosaic tile work, for floors, backsplash, and partition breaks in the kitchenette and public restrooms.
The double hung picture windows will remain and provide natural light to the space. Stained glass panels
representing women and children will accentuate the light weight molded doors.
Common areas will be given an ample amount of space where it will have enough useable space for a variety
of group activities yet intimate enough to keep individuals closer and secure. The custom media wall will be the
highlight of the housing center where both women and children can relax and enjoy recreational activities.
Attention to specialized furniture and building hardware will be given to small children and people of various
abilities who may take residence. Children and adults alike should have access to areas for study, personal
administrative tasks and rehabilitation, where they have adequate storage, supplies, task lighting, and technology
access. Private spaces will be provided for breastfeeding mothers and infants that need privacy and a silent
atmosphere during nap time. Accommodation areas should be public and accessible by all, this should include
kitchen, restroom, laundry, study area, storage, and transportation.
