Si Tenggang’s Homecoming

The physical journey that I traverse

Is a journey of the soul,
Transport of the self from a fatherland
To a country collected by sight and mind
The knowledge that sweats from it
Is a stranger’s knowledge,
From one who has learnt to see, think
And choose between
The changing realities.

It’s true I have growled at my mother and grandmother

But only after having told of my predicament
That they have never brought to reason.
The wife that I began to love in my loneliness,
In the country that alienated me,
They took to their predecisions.
I have not entirely returned, I know,
Having been change by time and place,
Coarsened by problems
Estranged by absence.

But look, I have brought myself home,

Seasoned by confidence,
Broadened by land and languages,
I am no longer afraid of the oceans
Or the differences between people
Not easily fooled by words or ideas
The journey was a loyal teacher
Who was never tardy
In explaining cultures or variousness
Look, I am just like you,
Still Malay
Sensitive to what
I believe is good
And more ready to understand
Than my brothers.
The content of these boats are yours too
Because I have returned.

Travels made me
A seeker who does not take
What is given without sincerity
Or that which demands payments from beliefs.
The years at sea and coastal states
Have taught me to choose,
To accept only those tested by comparison,
Or that which matches the words of my ancestors,
Which returns me to my village
And its perfection.

I’ve learnt the ways of the rude

To hold reality in a new logic,
Debate with hard and loud facts.
But I too am humble,
I respecting man and life.

I am not a new man,

Not very different from you;
The people and cities of coastal ports
Taught me not to brood
Over a foreign world,
Suffer difficulties
Or fear possibilities.
I am you,
Its soil and ways
Independent, because
I have found myself

…Meaning…

Si tenggang has travelled overseas and he has learned

about other lands and other people. He has the chance
to make comparisons between his country and other
countries.

He quarrelled with his mother and grandmother

because he thinks that they have not been fair to him.
They said he has changed. He feels lonely and
becomes closer to his wife because she is the only one
who understands him. His people form opinion is about
him without first trying to understand him. He is
alienated by his own people because they cannot
accept the new ideas that he has brought back. He
feels like an outcast in his own land.

Si tenggang’s journey overseas has taught him many

things. He has become more confident and has gained
a lot of knowledge and experiences during his journey.
He has become wiser now and is no longer afraid of the
unknown. He has learnt to accept what is good and to
reject what is bad. He compares his journey to a ‘loyal
teacher’ who has taught him many new things. Si
tenggang’s says he is still a Malay; a broad-minded
Malay. He wants to share his experiences and new
knowledge with his people.

Si tenggang has learnt to be selective in his

relationship and he no longer tolerates insincerity. He
wants to decide for himself what he wants to believe
and not be told what to believe. He thinks the Malay
culture is perfect. The village is his roots and he
belongs there.

Si tenggang has learnt to express his opinion openly

and frankly; they said he is rude. He said rude people
are those who deliberately oppose authority. He has
learnt to look at things in different ways. He says he is
still humble and he respects other human beings and
also life.

Si tenggang says he is not a completely different man

just because he has gone overseas. He is not different
from any other Malay but now he has a much broader
outlook of life. He is now free because he has found his
independence. His journey has given him the courage
to be different and to be able to think for him.
