Title of lesson: Mixed conditionals
Type of lesson: Reviewing and teaching grammar
Competences: To develop students skills in writing and speaking
Lesson Aims: by the end of the lesson Ss will be able:
- to recognize the forms and structure of all conditionals;
- to practice all types of conditionals including the mixed ones
(alternatives to if, omission of if);
- to communicate using conditionals.
Classroom relation: group work, individual work, pair work
Materials: textbook, blackboard, worksheets
Assumptions:
- the Ss are familiar with conditionals and vocabulary;
Evaluation:
- initial: through warm- up stage;
- continue: trough activities, observation, error correction;
- final: through oral and written feed-back and homework.

PROCEDURE:
Activity 1: Warm-up
Teacher greets the students and asks the duty students if there is anyone missing today,
the date, small talk to cheer them up.

Activity 2: Lead-in
Method: brainstorming

Interaction: pair work
Procedure: Teacher gives the students small pieces of paper, each containing half of a
joke. They have to find the other half. The student who has the first half will read it and
the rest of the class will try to reply exept to the one who has the other half who will reply
at the end. There are 10 conditional jokes.
Activity 3: Elicitation - Presentation
Time: 20
Interaction: whole class
Procedure: Teacher elicits from the students examples with the 4 conditionals (zero, I, II,
III, IV), rules and use. Teacher writes on the blackboard the form and use of every
conditional in a nutshell. Teacher tells the studentsto look at exercise 2a and that these
two sentences give examples of two types of mixed conditionals that are most common.
Teacher asks the students to identify how each is made up and why. Teacher adds to the
table mixed conditionals.

Activity 4: Controlled practice - mixed conditionals


Time: 8
Interaction: individual work
Procedure: The teacher asks some students to read the sentences from the exercise 2b,
page 83 aloud and complete the sentences using a mixed conditional. They will need to
identify the time of each part.
The students read the sentences aloud and answer teachers questions. The teacher helps
them if necessary.

Activity 5: Controlled practice - alternatives to if


Time: 7
Interaction: individual work
Procedure: Teacher starts by asking students if they enjoy air travel and eliciting some
negative aspects of it (cost, noise, pollution, space needed for airports) than asks the
students to read aloud the sentences from the exercise 3a, page 83 and choose the right
alternative. Teacher checks the answers. Teacher writes on the board: Alternatives to if :
unless, notunless, whetheror not, provided that, as long as, but for, otherwise.
Activity 6: Controlled practice - omission of if
Time: 5
Interaction: whole class
Procedure: Teacher asks the students to read aloud the sentences from the exercise 4a,
page 83 and compare the sentences in each pair.
Activity 7: Organizing feedback
Time: 1
Procedure: Teacher corrects the major mistakes (if there are any) she has identified during
the class.
*Note: Students can finish earlier. In that case the teacher has a worksheet prepared
where students have to decide which of the sentences are correct and correct those that
arent.

Procedure: usually this is the Setting homework stage but in this case there isnt any.
