Filipino College Student Pursuing Hand-me-downs Dreams from their Parents

For many Filipinos, a college diploma symbolizes the attainment of a major life goal,
along with the hard work that led to its attainment and the promise of professional
success, financial stability, and personal stature (Puyat, 2005). In this regard pursuing a
certain degree program is vital to ones success.
According to Pascual (2014) there are different factors that affect students choice of
course in college. One of this is family related factors. Study revealed that Filipinos rely
heavily on their familys decision-making.
As of today, it can be observed in Philippine context that most of the college students are
taking up career which is influenced by their parents. Though some of these students
learned to loved their program or excel at it, theres also some who hardly passes the
program or tend to slack with their studies. Thus, this study aims to examine reasons why
Filipino students pursue degree program that their parents passed onto them and
characteristics of them and if it does make their life better or the other way around.
Through these goals, a profound career counseling can be given to them as well as to the
future college students, helping them procuring a much establish career path. This will be
also an additional knowledge in the field of Filipino Psychologya finer perspective in
understanding Psychology.
Methodology:
Participants (approximately 50 in all) are college students from Southwestern University.
Participants will come from across all year levels and from various majors (education,
engineering, psychology, medical-related courses and etc.). Approximately half will be
males and half will be females. They will be recruited through faculty and student
contacts.
Pagtatanong-tanong and Pakikipagkwetuhan will be the methods to be used, questions
will be asked to them utilizing Pagtatanong-tanong and as much as possible it will be
participatory in nature and the consistency of response can be checked by repeating the
question in a different way. Ill be using Pagkikipagkwentuhan also, wherein Ill be
exchanging information, insights, and opinions with the participants. Data will be
collected and analyze with the use of these methods.
