April 2010

“The Time is Right!”

The great news this month is that we are now almost ready to
start work on repairing the clock. The Select Vestry have
unanimously agreed that the best plan is to retain and restore
the existing mechanism, install an electric winding system, re-
store the hourly chime and clean and renovate the face and
hands..
The cost of this work will be between £6000 and £7000. A
number of parishioners have indicated that they would like to
be associated with this project. Now is the time to make those
pledges a reality so that we can begin the project with the
knowledge that we can pay for it. As our accounts show, the
running account is breaking even and the development ac-
count is still in debt. Until that debt is cleared, any special pro-
jects like this need to be supported through your generosity
and commitment. There is no minimum limit and the excess, if
any, can be designated to the future maintenance of the clock.
This is a very interesting piece of work and craftsmanship. The
“Clockmaker” has agreed to show us some photographs and
answer questions about the work at a special evening on
Thursday 15th April at 8pm. On the same evening, Brett Han-
nam will be highlighting some of the interesting stories that
have come to light in researching the parish history in prepara-
tion for publication. This should be a fascinating evening and a
good opportunity to introduce you to the project. Pledges
should be made to Colin, our treasurer either before or at the
meeting so that we can finalise the contract.

EASTER DAY
CHRIST IS RISEN—HALLELUJAH
Not very long ago, Easter usually witnessed the largest church attendance in the year. Now,
sadly, it can sometimes be the opposite. Leisure takes precedence over worship. We seem to
have forgotten that, without the resurrection, we would be a hopeless people. There would be
nothing to look forward to and nothing to rejoice in. Wherever you happen to be over the Easter
weekend, strive to make time to join with others in a united act of Christian worship.
Our services are as follows:

6:15am Holy Communion outdoors at the Argory with the Archbishop and the Mark
Ferguson Praise Band

9:30am Holy Communion in Mullavilly

11:00am Holy Communion in Mullavilly—make this a family event

PS Worship in Kilkeel Parish Church is at 11:30am

CONFIRMATION
“Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ?”
“I am.”
This is the answer to be given by our 15 candidates on April 25th when the Archbishop visits us for confirmation at
7pm. Pray for each of the candidates in preparation for this moment. They are:
Amy Gray, Courtney Haire, Daniel Haire, Jason Haire, Michael King, Susan King, Beth Irwin, An-
drew Irwin, Scott McConville, Ben McFetridge, Andrew Milne, Sarah Neill, Christopher Stewart,
Peter Stewart, David Whiteman.

2010 NEWS
There are two main bits of news for April—the first is the launch of the clock project mentioned on the front page, and
the second is to announce our guest preacher for April. We welcome back the Revd Canon Liz McElhinney who
spent two years with us as part of her training for ministry. Liz was ordained to serve as curate of Maralin and then
became rector of Sligo before retiring a few years ago. She continues to preach several weekends each month in Co
Cavan and to provide pastoral care for clergy and their families.
Liz will be with us on the morning of April 25th and the Archbishop will be with us for confirmation in the evening—
what a busy day!
Yesterday, today, for ever -Jesus is the same!

son-in-law of Victoria Beattie. The funeral was from Victoria’s home to Seagoe and post 89 Mullavilly Road
then to the Crematorium. We extend our sympathy to both these family circles. Our Tandragee

FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Our back page is a summary of the accounts for 2009. We endeavoured to come through 2009 with a restricted
budget and this will continue through 2010. The no 1 account, used for the daily running of the parish has remained
steady and we are aware that many parishioners are maintaining their generosity even through difficult times.

The no 2 account, used for capital improvements has also seen a substantial reduction in its debt by £20,000. This
has been achieved through the dedication of those parishioners who support it and through the successful fund-
raising projects. This is still a large debt for us to be carrying and, whilst it may be cleared in 5 years at the present
rate, its existence is holding back any future development and improvement in our building or ministry. We need all
our parishioners to get behind this fund so that we can have the freedom to do other things sooner rather than later.
The thanks of the parish are due to all those who help with our financial management and to the Select Vestry its
management in general. In these difficult financial times as we recover from a deep recession, we pray that our gifts,
generously given as a token of our worship, may be used and applied wisely in advancing the Kingdom of God.

A more detailed copy of the accounts is available if required.
