Portfolio Category Freshman Critical Reasoning
The Thoreau/Crane comparison paper was a complex assignment that challenged me to consider the
views of two very different philosophers. This assignment has allowed me to consider the same aspects of life
such as self-reliance and philanthropy. It was my first major critical thinking piece, so I consider it to be
significant for my academic career. By completing this paper, I learned that there are often many ways of
looking at any disputed topic. Some of the views of the two authors will stay with me for the rest of my life.
This project encompasses many of the underlying themes around me and brings them into light, for example,
how much I take material things for granted. When I redo this assignment, I will be sure to right my mistakes
that presented themselves within my syntax and sentence structure. This project made me consider the topics
that were discussed; philanthropy, materialism, and self-reliance, and also to discuss them with my peers. To
write this paper, I had to first write an outline containing page numbers for the quotes I would later integrate.
Then I got this reviewed and made my revisions, before compiling all of this into my product. I then went back
over the piece and cut out unnecessary fluff. I created a cover page and then printed it. This writing assignment
challenged my writing abilities and allowed me to seriously consider my opinion on many significant aspects of
society.
