Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI has been applied in many fields:

Internet (e.g., semantic search engines, spam fighting).
Robotics (e.g., driverless vehicles).
Speech recognition.
Entertainment.
Military (e.g., logistics planning).
Medical.
Machine translation.
Weather forecasting.
Others

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI started after WW II, the name appeared in 1956.

What is AI?
The way to make the machine think ?
What do you think about this problem?

The mission of this robot is to detect

mines (for example). Then there many
subtasks to do: obstacle detection and

If we place you instead of the

avoidance, determining mines positions,

robot, then what is your

sending data to base-station,

strategy? can you perform

this mission 100%?

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

So, it is a matter of how to think? And how to act?

From another point of view: would we like to have systems that mimics
humans (may succeed, may fail) or that always succeed?
Different approaches of AI:

Systems that think rationally

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In this course:
intelligence is concerned mainly with rational action.

Ideally, an intelligent agent takes the best possible action in a situation.

A system is rational if it
does the "right thing,"
given what it knows.

What is ES?
An expert system is software that uses a knowledge base of
human expertise for problem solving, or clarify uncertainties where
normally one or more human experts would need to be consulted.

Expert systems are most common in a specific problem domain, and are a
traditional application and/or subfield of artificial intelligence (AI).
