Silverwood 2008 An Excellent Adventure!

By Cleo Parker

In 1972, I attended my first Silverwood Trophy competition. I was 16 years old and the guest of Douglas and
Joyce Rose, who sold me my first Bull Terrier, Laura (Hylos Bounty of Melrose.) I remember flying student
standby for the sum of $36 round trip from Detroit. I have not missed a Silverwood since then, and of course,
like most North American Bull Terrier enthusiasts, Ive dreamed of winning the Silverwood Trophy, but little
did I imagine that 2008 would be that year!
I got a taste of the glory when Ch. Nuance Nominee went Reserve White Dog in Calgary in 1985. That dog,
Grant, is behind all the dogs I have today through his granddaughter, Ada (Am/Can Ch Horizons Harlequin
Romance, RN.) Ada is the grandmother of Marley (Am/Can Ch Nuance Nonsense, ROM) and her litter sister
Jolie (Ch Nuance Nonchalance, ROM.)
The decision to attend Silverwood this year was clouded by the fact I had lost my job just a few weeks
earlier. As noted, I havent missed one in over 30 years, and its not the first time since I was out of school that
I wasnt gainfully employed when Silverwood rolled around. However, this was going to be a particularly
expensive trip, involving a 1200 mile road trip, $4 a gallon gas, and 4 days at a $120/night resort hotel. My
husband Mike and I discussed it briefly and decided that we were going to go ahead. Hed been planning to
visit his sister nearby, we wanted to indulge our passion for roller coasters at Universal Studios, and I had
already promised 3 other people that Id drive their dogs down. Two of them had their plane tickets and wed
all sent in our entries, so away we went.
Monday, the day before we left there were dogs coming and going for hours; Denise Myers came down to drop
off Phoebe (Nuance Night Moves) and take Ada back to her house, Sandy & Peggy Beisel-McIlwaine came
by with Sport (Nuance No-hitter at Foxairn), then Brianne Colling with Jolie and we of course, were taking
our own Marley. I ran my other house dog, Anna Nicole, over to Bob & Jennifer Benders house so they could
watch her while we were gone. Bright and early Tuesday morning we set out. There were two 400 crates facing
out the back for Marley and Jolie, another 400 facing out the passenger side for Sport and Phoebe was in a 300
facing out the drivers side. In the space between the crates, our grooming table, folding crates, all the dog and
human luggage, snacks, coolers, and Mikes golf clubs were stacked to the ceiling. We had our trusty Google
map printout, plenty of coffee and homemade muffins in the front seats and we were on our way.
On the recommendation of Mikes brother in law we didnt take the usual Michigan to Florida route of I-75 all
the way. We took the more scenic, less congested and slightly longer route which goes east through
Cleveland and then down I-77 to I-95 into Florida. I had made reservations in advance at dog-friendly hotels
along our route; not the easiest task from a distance! The first night we stayed in a Red Roof Inn near Charlotte
which surprised us not with their dog charge, but the fact it was a per-dog charge, fortunately only $5 a head,
but unexpected. The next day we stopped at Mikes sisters house on Merritt Island for a late lunch and then
drove the last hour into the Wyndham resort in Orlando. The Wyndham was huge and a bit confusing; it
consisted of a very large convention center with a number of separate buildings where the sleeping rooms were.
Only 2 floors per building, but no elevators, we fortunately got a ground floor room in a building that was fairly
close to the convention center.

Peggy was already there when we got in, so we got Sport moved out to her room first thing. Once everyone
was fed and settled we met her for snacks and drinks in the lounge, which curiously was the only place in
the resort with free wi-fi. Then we started getting calls from Brianne and her mom Ilene who were flying in
together. The plane was late, then later, but they finally got their car and into their room which was on the
opposite side of our building, and they picked up Jolie.
The next morning we headed off to Universal Studios; the hotel had a shuttle, but the return schedule was a
bit late for my comfort, so we drove over in the now empty minivan. As usual for October, it wasnt crowded
at all, so we went on the Hulk and the Dueling Dragons quite a few times before we had to return to prepare
for the sweepstakes.
Our building was fairly close to the convention center, but not the side where the show ring was, so when
Peggy and I made our first trip over to figure out the lay of the land and drop off our grooming equipment
it was a bit of an adventure; we ended up walking everything up stairs rather than going far enough to find
the ramp. Fortunately we found a shortcut through the convention center from a door near our building the
next day. It was still a LOT of walking; we had two roller bases and had brought two extra folding crates
that we left in the grooming room all weekend, so at least there wasnt a lot of hauling to go along with the
footwork.
As I mentioned, the convention center was huge, and the Tampa Bay club had booked separate rooms for
everything so nothing had to be torn down and reset during the weekend. The grooming room had plenty of
room for all even on the busiest days, and the show ring was adequate considering the entry, which was low
this year. The BTCA also experimented with a new schedule; Thursday evening was the sweepstakes where
Sport and Phoebe competed, and then most of the specialty judging was on Friday rather than Sunday.
Judging started with the futurity and went through all the regular classes and Winners in each variety. That
way only Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and the Veterans class winners needed to be shown again on Sunday.
Since neither Phoebe nor Sport made it that far, it was convenient for me as an exhibitor since I just left my
two folding crates set up and the two dogs that were on for the day used them, the others could stay in
the hotel room. The weekend does lose the momentum of having the specialty all in one day, but its less
sitting if you want to watch and its nice getting it over early on Sunday for people who have to leave in the
afternoon.
Friday evening, the Tampa club hosted a cocktail party with a cash bar and pre-paid food which was nice, but
Mike thought it was a bit too formal; I think it might have been more casual had it been outside as originally
planned, but rain changed those plans!
One aspect of the schedule that did not change was that Saturday was devoted to Silverwood. The two big
girls Marley and Jolie were in the colored bitch class which as usual, drew the highest entry in the show and
this year was judged by Lynn Myall and Claudia Sharp. Going into the show I had thought that Jolie had a
good shot at the top awards in Colored Bitches, but I really wasnt hoping for too much for Marley. I did think
Mar was in great condition and she had really been showing well, so I was hopeful that shed be a finalist as
she had been the year before. Both girls made the finals, but there were 7 finalists cut from the 19 bitches
present which meant the judges had only agreed on one bitch in the class. I could not have been more

surprised when that one bitch turned out to be Marley and we won the class. Jolie was then called out to
compete for reserve against Action Drama Queen under referee Phil Brodeur. Phil chose Jolie for Reserve
Colored Bitch. I believe this was the first time that littermates have gone Best and Reserve in the same
Silverwood class. (Littermates have won different classes at Silverwood several times and in 1971, littermates
won the Silverwood Trophy and Runner Up.)
So on to the Trophy Round - I had been shocked to win Colored Bitch, but I knew that as winner of the largest
and in my opinion, the most competitive class in the show, we probably had a good shot at winning the
Silverwood Trophy. Marley continued to show her heart out and sure enough, we did. As her breeder, I also
won the Bramblemere Gay Carolynda Trophy for Breeder of the Silverwood Winner and since both Marleys
parents were born in North America, we also won the Irene Mann Trophy for Best Second Generation North
American born Bull Terrier. Although I love and appreciate all my co-owners dearly, I will admit theres something cool about being the sole owner and breeder of the winner so all the loot was mine!
Later that day after Silverwood, Phoebe and Sport got to have a family reunion with their sister Isla (eye-la) who
now lives in Wisconsin with Graham and Karen McGrath. Isla has taught herself to do back flips to retrieve her
favorite rubber bone in mid-air, which is pretty amazing; that girl needs to go into show business! That evening
at the banquet Brianne and I picked up ROM certificates for Jolie and Marley. Another highlight was a visit by
Captain Jack Sparrow who amused us by stealing the silverware and other charming pirate tricks.
Like many Silverwood winners, I decided to pull Marley the next day and sit and relax at ringside. I was pleased
to see Jolie go BOS in Coloreds to another Michigan-bred dog, Dale & Chris Schuur & Judy Schreibers Ch
Old Forge Tug McGraw at Chevalier, ROM who was Best of Variety.
Ive since found out that Marley and Jolies parents, Ch Silmaril Scarlet Knight and Nuance Nonconformance
(Anna Nicole) will be recipients of the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch trophies for 2008.
After the show on Sunday I attended a judging seminar for breeders and got Marley a discount echocardiogram
at the BTCA sponsored health clinic. We had dinner and stayed with Mikes sister and brother in law that night
and headed out the next morning to our planned destination near Jonesville, NC at a Super 8. That was a great
dog-friendly hotel, we could park outside the door, had an ample room for four crates and a big, flat grassy area
nearby. The temperature and the gas prices were both a lot lower on the way home, and all went well. Tuesday
morning we were once again up early and got home again around 6.
This was a wonderful experience, I got so many hugs and congratulations, cards, gifts, even flowers afterwards.
Needless to say were glad we decided to go!
And I have to finish by giving my heartfelt thanks to Douglas Rose who was willing to sell a Bull Terrier to a
fourteen year old Bully-crazed girl and encourage my interest in the BTCA, to Drue King for my foundation
Brood Bitch Emeritus and Versatility Award winner Ch Westbrook Walking Song, C.D. ROM, TT and to Kevin
Gardner and Paula Grecco for coming up with Ada when my breeding program was fresh out of bitches. My
husband Mike Briggs also deserves credit for supporting my obsession with these dogs and helping me achieve
more than I could on my own.

Running Formula 1 with a TANK... by Marcos Yaez

Border Collies, German Shepherds and Malinois breeds are especially
valued for work and canine sports. They have the physical power, they seem
made for it and learn very fast.
I have always been a fan of dog sports so in 2005 I made a curious choice.
My wife and I decided to buy a dog. We studied many breeds and finally chose the English Bull Terrier.
We were fascinated with their egg-shaped heads and because we heard that they are considered , The clown
of the dog breeds. Jacinta then came into our lives, a beautiful white bull with a black ear. Her training was
part of the project which would soon lead us all to compete in the sport of Agility.
The experts on the subject said that Bull Terriers could practice Agility, but no one would be a champion of
this discipline. The Bull Terrier is aggressive or that bitch will not be able to were phrases that
accompanied us every day in our sports training. Since I am stubborn like Jacinta , I continued to work in
silence because I was sure that my bull was going to surprise everybody.
Everything changed when at her first competition. Jacinta dazzled people
all over the world with her speed and concentration. From then on my
Bull Terrier has been the center of attention at all events.

Jacinta leads in the Chilean Agility Championship, competing on a par with

the fast Border Collie.
Today, after three wonderful years I can say with pride that my Bull Terrier
integrates the selection of Chilean Agility. In March of this year we went to
compete at the Championship of America and the Caribbean Agility, held
in Argentina. Our best success was when Dan Wroblesly, the captain of the
Brazilian selection of Agility and two time world champion told me, I have
been doing agility for 20 years and have never seen a Bull Terrier do what
you do with your dog, this is incredible.
After something like that there is not much to add. Jacinta and all the Bull
Terriers are a wonderful breed that can unfold successfully in any discipline.

It only needs work, patience and love.

Forward gladiators, glory awaits!
